Each year, Cars.com releases its American-Made Index. Evaluations “are based on percentage [by cost] of their parts that are made domestically, where they are built and how popular they are among U.S. buyers.” For the last five years, the Ford F-150 pickup, the best-selling vehicle in America 30-plus years and running, has also topped the list. This year, it dropped to second behind the Toyota Camry. Two of the three factors in developing the list are no-brainers. One is the percentage of American-made parts, as listed on the vehicle window sticker. The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS, for instance, has 60 percent “U.S./Canadian parts content.” Camaro also has 24 percent content from Mexico, which isn’t considered part of the states. The second factor in the Cars.com evaluation is assembly location. “Ninety-seven percent of the Camrys sold here were built in the U.S,” says Patrick Olsen, editor in chief of Cars. com, which is partly owned by Chicago Tribune parent Tribune Co. The third criteria, sales volume, factors in the financial impact of the sales on the U.S. economy.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Toyota has identified a vehicle-based remedy for the problem with accelerator pedal entrapment. The government agency says Toyota plans to reconfigure the pedal.

But what about all the media hype regarding other potential causes (faulty electronic computer systems among the most popular)? Perhaps the carmaker will soon squash the rumors once it gets a handle on fixing the four-million-vehicle flub. First things first.

If you own one of the following, Toyota will notify you on a rolling basis—starting with those driving ES 350, Camry, and Avalon models.

• 2007-2010 Camry
• 2005-2010 Avalon
• 2004-2009 Prius
• 2005-2010 Tacoma
• 2007-2010 Tundra
• 2007-2010 ES 350
• 2006-2010 IS 250
• 2006-2010 IS 350

Until Toyota contacts you, remove the driver-side floor mats on the above vehicles. Particularly, if the car is yours. And don’t replace them until Toyota has fixed your vehicle. The fix will include:

1) A reconfiguration of the accelerator pedal, and possibly the shape of the floor surface underneath the pedal. You could get a replacement pedal as soon as April 2010, even if your vehicle already received a modified pedal under the recall.

2) An installation of a brake override system as an “extra measure of confidence” for the following recalled models: Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES 350, IS 350 and IS 250. With this new system, the vehicle will still stop even if you apply the brake and accelerator pedals simultaneously. A note on the government agency’s site reads, “NHTSA is particularly pleased that Toyota is taking this additional step.” Um, yay?

3) Newly designed replacement driver- and front-passenger side all-weather mats for those vehicles formerly dressed in any genuine Toyota or Lexus accessory all-weather floor mats.

As early as January 2010, Toyota will get to work on the recalled vehicles. It will start by first instructing dealers on how to reshape existing accelerator pedals. Then it will distribute replacement accelerator pedals for installation on vehicles not yet worked on. Even if you have your existing pedal modified, you are still eligible to receive a shiny, new one when Toyota doles them out.

Toyota’s fast track to mass confusion, mistrust and fear is attributed to a safety issue with some floor mats that cause sudden and possibly deadly acceleration. Or was it a drive by wire? An electric throttle control system?

Whatever the root cause, these runaway vehicles have consumers running scared. Just turn on the news. Multiple news stations and media outlets throughout the country are feeding the frenzy by running stories on potential other causes proposed by, wait what did they call them, experts, investigators, you get the idea.

My advice is go to the source (see contact numbers below), and if you still can’t get answers, go to your attorney. Here are the models associated with the dangerous accelerator pedal entrapment problems:

Washinggton, 26 November 2009 - Toyota Motor Corporation berencana mengganti pedal gas 4 juta mobil di Amerika Serikat menyusul laporan yang disampaikan Lembaga Nasional Keselamatan Jalan Raya Amerika Serikat (National Safety Highway Traffic Administration/NSHTA) September lalu. Penggantian akan dilakukan mulai April 2010.

Seperti diketahui, pertengahan September lalu, NSHTA mengumumkan pedal gas mobil Toyota menyangkut di karpet sehingga gas tiba-tiba tertarik dan mobil melaju kencang tak bisa dikendalikan dan menimbulkan kecelakaan. Lembaga ini juga merekomendasikan Toyota untuk menarik kembali produknya yang dinilai bermasalah itu.

NHSTA juga mengatakan, sebuah laporan kecelakaan terjadi di California yang menewaskan seorang pengemudi dan tiga anggota keluarganya terjadi pada September. Kecelakaan terjadi karena pengemudi tidak bisa mengendalikan mobil yang melesat dengan tiba-tiba akibat pedal gas tertarik oleh karpet lantai.

Perbaikan pedal gas ini merupakan langkah penting bagi Toyota untuk memulihkan citranya sebagai pabrikan otomotif terbesar di dunia setelah berita penarikan kembali produknya diumumkan ke publik pada September lalu. Terlebih, selama bertahun-tahun produk Toyota dikenal tidak hanya nyaman tetapi juga aman.

“Reputasi Toyota benar-benar terpukul (dengan peristiwa tersebut),” tutur Aaron Bragman analis otomotif dari Lembaga Konsultansi IHS Global Insight seperti dikutip Associated Press, Kamis (26/11).

Sementara itu sumber di Toyota menyebut, dalam rencana penarikan yang dirilis Rabu (25/11), dealer Toyota akan menawarkan (sementara) pedal gas kepada para pemilik mobil sembari menunggu pabrikan mengembangkan model pedal gas yang terbaik.

Proses penggantian sementara itu akan dilakukan awal Januari mendatang. Sedangkan pedal baru yang permanen akan dipasang pada awal April.

Juru bicara Toyota Amerika, Irvin Miller, mengatakan pihaknya sangat serius menaruh perhatian pada masalah ini. Namun, sebutnya, Toyota percaya bila disebut electronic control system mobil produknya bermasalah.

Menyinggung penggantian pedal gas dan karpet lantai yang akan dilakukan itu, sumber Toyota lainnya mengatakan, karpet lantai mobil hanya dijual di Amerika. Oleh karena itu penarikan kembali produk yang akan diganti hanya terbatas pada produk yang dijual di Amerika Utara saja.

The $1 Billion Toyotathon

In what may very well be called one of the most daring moves made by a car manufacturer when it comes to its marketing strategy this year, the Japanese from Toyota seem to have decided on launching a dazzling $1 billion campaign for the fourth quarter of 2009.

Toyota is resorting to this daring move (given the current economy and the fact that the US market is now flooded with the 700,000 vehicles sold under CARS) in the hope that the fourth quarter will be just as in any other year: strong.

“We see the economy is starting to strengthen a bit,” Irv Miller, Toyota spokesman was quoted as saying by msnbc.com. “We’ve stopped playing defense. It’s time to go on the offense.“

The strengthening of the economy was witnessed by Toyota is August, when the company was able to post an amazing 32.4 percent increase in US sales, compared to the same month of 2008. The company sold a total of 225,088 vehicles, up 10.5 percent over year-ago levels on a daily selling rate basis.

Of course, the increase may be irrelevant, as August was CARS-month and Toyota was CARS’ best selling brand, with 19 percent of the total sales going to the Japanese manufacturer.

Even so, the new marketing campaign will be rolled out in November and will follow the company’s established Toyotathon marketing and sales run.

The Prius could surpass the Camry as Toyota’s best selling model in the U.S. in the next ten years says the head of Toyota’s sales department. Toyota Motor Sales boss Jim Lentz made the comments, stating that he sees the Prius gaining ground, rather than the Camry (the top selling passenger car in the U.S. for 11 of the past 12 years) shrinking.

The prediction, however, is a long way off from reality, as so far in 2009 Prius sales aren’t even half of Camry sales, with the former registering 118,290 units sold, while the Camry sits as 294,493 units sold. Both the Camry and Prius had their best sales years ever in 2007, when the Prius sold 181,221 units, compared to the Camry’s 473,108 units. Toyota is predicting 140,000 units for the Prius in ‘09.

Toyota has big plans in store for its small car project. Toyota has zeroed on Dentsu Communications to handle the advertisements for Toyota’s small car which will be soon launched in India.

It has been roughly estimated that the volume and the size of the business is in the vicinity of Rs 100 crore. Dentsu, along with this responsibility, will also be looking at the advertising duties of Toyota Prius, which is pitched as a green car and is launching next month.

Toyota’s advertisements belonging to the passenger car segment will be handled by Dentsu while PerceptH will be handling the advertisement duties of the SUV and the MUV categories.

The other cars belonging to Toyota stable in India include Camry and Corolla Altis in the passenger car segment and Innova, Prado, New Land Cruiser and Fortuner comprising SUV and MUV.

The entry of Toyota into the small car business is considered significant, as it is moving towards a more mass market. The advertising blitzkrieg by car giants entering India, including Volkswagen, in the recent times explains Toyota’s needs to keep the ad size significant. The marketing activity is slated to begin soon.

The upcoming Australian made Toyota Camry Hybrid will save approximately 1100 litres of fuel in a year of city driving compared to locally made six-cylinder rivals.

Corporate manager of product planning, Mr Peter Evans, said Hybrid Camry’s fuel consumption and emissions would rival small and compact cars. 

The fuel savings during 20,000km of city driving will be at least 1100 litres or $1329 a year, based on pump price of $1.20 a litre of regular unleaded petrol.

“Those savings will be multiplied by two, 10, and even hundreds for fleet owners – and many of their drivers will save even more by covering far greater distances,” Mr Evans said.

“At the same time, Hybrid Camry – with combined power of around 140kW from its 2.4-litre petrol engine and powerful electric motor – will produce less than 150 grams per kilometre of CO2.

“That’s the sort of result you’d expect from a car with less than half the power of Hybrid Camry and a much smaller engine displacement of around 1.3 litres.”

Mr Evans said that most Australian’s do most of their driving in built up areas making the city cycle more relevant.

Final testing will confirm the Hybrid Camry’s fuel saving ability, expecting at least 5.5L/100km on city cycle.

“Using the same amount of fuel, a Hybrid Camry could travel at least 175km compared with just 100km for the most efficient six-cylinder car produced in Australia.

“Even on the open road, we expect the official figures to show Hybrid Camry will use around 25 per cent less fuel than the best of the local big sixes.

“Looking at the combination of city and highway driving, we are confident of recording fuel economy in the low 6.0 litres per 100km range.

“By driving Hybrid Camry, the savings on fuel and therefore on people’s wallets will be huge – and there is also a significant environmental benefit,” he said.

Mr Evans said Hybrid Camry will also have other fuel saving features as well as the petrol electric motor.

“Our engineers have tuned the suspension and steering for Australian conditions – and they have included technology that improves overall driving performance and safety,” he said.

Toyota plans to release the Hybrid Camry in February 2010.

With a safety recall involving 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles, you’d think Toyota would be a little more judicious when issuing a press release. Most recently, the carmaker published false and misleading info on its latest floor mat flub.

About its alleged driver’s side, pedal-entrapping floor mats, Toyota inaccurately stated the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has come to the conclusion, “that no defect exists in vehicles in which the driver’s floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured.”

Not so, says the government agency. Not even close. In fact, the NHTSA stands by its original advice to Toyota and consumers to yank the recalled floor mats ASAP. Removing the mats is the NHTSA’s quickest answer to the deadly problem, but it’s still just an interim measure. Until Toyota “effectively addresses the defect by providing a suitable vehicle based solution,” the NHTSA considers the issue wide open.

The consumer alert includes the following Toyota and Lexus vehicles:

• 2007-2010 Camry
• 2005-2010 Avalon
• 2004-2009 Prius
• 2005-2010 Tacoma

Disebutkan pula, setelah peluncuran di negara Matahari Terbit itu, Kizashi juga akan diluncurkan di sejumlah negara. Amerika, sebut sumber itu, merupakan negara kedua yang akan menjual sedan bermesin J24B 2.400 cc. Kizashi dalam bahasa Jepang memiliki arti tanda sesuatu hal yang besar.

Sesuai dengan nama itu, Suzuki mengklaim sedan premium itu tidak hanya memberikan kenyamanan dan keamanan di dalam kabin semata tetapi memberikan performa mesin yang tangguh.

Sejumlah fitur penunjang keamanan dan kenyamanan disematkan pada sedan tersebut. Di raung kabin misalnya, pada seluruh bagiannya dilengkapi piranti peredam suara. Sehingga kebisingan suara mesin maupun dari luar kendaraan bisa dihilangkan. Jok berbalut kulit standar mobil sport menghiasi kabin Kisazhi.

Sedangkan,koneksi bluetooth, i-Pod, menjadi fitur standar. “Mobil ini memang ditujukan untuk kalangan eksekutif,” tutur sumber Suzuki.

Sementara mesin 2.400 cc DOHC empat silinder itu mampu menyemburkan tenaga hingga 138 KW dan torsi maksimum hingga 230 Nm. Perangkat intake manifold serta knalpot ganda memberikan kenyamanan dalam berkendara mobil bertransmisi manual enam kecepatan ini. Sistem transimisi menggunakan teknologi Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), sehingga perpindahan gigi bisa berlangsung mulus dan halus tanpa hentakan.

Untuk menjamin keselamatan dan keamanan berkendara mobil ini dilengkapi piranti Electronic Stability Control (ESC), serta delapan airbag. Tak lupa piranti Antilock Braking System (ABS) dengan Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) dipasang pada keempat roda. Soal suspensi, Suzuki menjamin kenyamanannya.

Mobil bervelg ukuran 17 inchi itu menggunakan Multi Link Rear Suspension dari bahan alumunium yang didesain untuk meredam getaran dan guncangan.

Lantas kapan sedan ini dipasarkan di Indonesia? Yoshiji Terada, Presiden Direktur PT Suzuki Indomobil Motor (SIM) Agen Tunggal Pemegang Merek Suzuki di Indonesia, Jumat (23/10) lalu, sempat menyinggung kemungkinan sedan itu dipasarkan di Indonesia.

Meski tidak secara tegas menyebut Kizashi, namun Terada mengatakan pada 2010 mendatang pihaknya akan menambah varian baru untuk memperkuat penjualan produk Suzuki di Indonesia. “Varian produk itu jenis sedan,” akunya.

Apakah Kizashi? “Mungkin” kata Terada tersenyun. Bila ya, berapa sedan ini akan dibanderol? Lagi-lagi Terada menyebut belum bisa mengatakan. “Harga nanti saja,” tandasnya.

Looking at the grey Camry LE with its two-tone grey interior, I can’t help but think that we’ve come to expect too much. Too often, we think the Camry should have something of the divine. And the Accord. And the Fusion. And the Malibu. We’ve come to believe these mid-size sedans should be nothing short of extraordinary.

The Toyota Camry LE is the entry-level model of the lineup. That being said, it’s far from ill equipped.

Yet, these cars were created for the masses, to be sold to hundreds of thousands of consumers cast in the same mould and living in the four corners of our continent. So how can you give them an in-your-face attitude that everyone and their neighbour will love?

In light of this, our Camry LE, a basic model that’s as grey inside as out, becomes more appealing, more desirable even, exactly because it accomplishes its mission. While its profile no longer goes unnoticed, it doesn’t revolutionize modern automotive styling. Its spacious cabin benefits from a relatively complete set of standard equipment. In addition, its overall performance (acceleration and fuel consumption) is good, considering the fact that the oil companies enjoy playing yo-yo with gas prices on an almost daily basis.

More visual punch
In 2007, Toyota corrected one of the issues that has been the bane of the Camry since its introduction in 1983. The automaker gave it more distinctive traits. You simply have to think back to the models from the 90s to remember… that you don’t remember them. At the time, Camry rimed with blah. A common trait of more than one mid-size sedan of the day, admittedly.

At the turn of the new millennium, in a seemingly concerted effort automakers launched new, more elegant, more stimulating generations of cars. Even GM caught that train. Imagine!

Today’s Camry is the kind of car you either love or hate – not too much of either, mind you. After all, it’s still a mass-produced consumer good. The light visual updates worked on it for 2010 (new grill, new taillights) are in keeping with this principle.

The 2010 version inherits a redesigned grille.
