All in all, I’m pretty proud to be Canadian I’m fourth generation Canadian on one side and second on the other. I’m so thankful for the life I’ve been able to live in this glorious place!

Most Canadians know our national anthem (I hope!) Some would even know that there are two versus. I’d wager that most wouldn’t know there are four versus to our anthem! The words are lovely, and I thought I’d share them with you. (Lyrics came from this website.)

By Ethan Rabidoux

I heard about this on the radio a few days ago;
http://playouranthem.ca/play/?p=84

Some Canadian hockey fan wants our anthem played at the start of all the Philadelphia/Chicago games because 33 of the players (combined from both teams) are Canadian.

I have to oppose this move. I urge everyone else to do the same.

I’m a huge hockey fan and I served in the Canadian Forces. I think I can comfortably say that I love my country without too many people doubting me.

However, hockey is a meritocracy based on teamwork. It’s not the individual hockey players that matter but the team they play for.

The old expression, “There is no ‘I’ in team” is especially appropriate here. I request that all the smart asses out there refrain from posting a follow up to that age-old proverb.

In short, there may be a vast majority of Canadian players on the ice but there are two American hockey teams. That’s it. It’s the team that matters. You only play the US anthem.

If we want to hear our anthem during the Stanley Cup finals, we need Canadian teams to stop wussin’ out.

I welcome any and all feedback on this post.

Should Canada change its national anthem?
3 March 2010

Oh, Canada… In the wake of potentially the greatest cultural and patriotic moments in the annals of your history, parliament wants to change the national anthem –seriously.

The Governor General Michaelle Jean announced in today’s throne speech that we, Canada, should adopt a more gender-neutral phrasing of the Canadian anthem:

“True patriot love in all thy sons command”

Yes, that one part, that one word, in the Canadian anthem is under the scrutiny of political correctness, all for the sake of…I don’t even know. Who even knows why right this is being disputed right now?

In case you were wondering, the revised version may go something like this:

“True patriot love thou dost in us command”

If this is the government’s way of trying to rouse patriotism in an effort to preserve and protect something that, in itself, is perfectly fine, this is not the way. If this is the government’s way of delaying further action without requestion a third prorogation, congratulations. I think the Leader of the Opposition Michael Ignatieff got it right in calling out the government for taking no real action on women’s equality, and simply putting forth symbolic gestures.

In all reality, what does this act achieve? Personally, I feel that national anthems, especially Canada’s, are inherently inclusive — after all, that’s kind of the point of a national anthem. I doubt any of the Olympic female athletes were contemplating the socio-political implications of gender-bias phrasing while they were winning gold last month.

Nevertheless, I kind of get it? Change isn’t easy and always comes with resistance, and this is all in the name of social progress. And, our discourse and phrasing shapes and alters the way we should think about and approach issues — theoretically. But, does it really? Will changing this one word in the Canadian anthem change the way in which we approach gender issues in Canada? Will it further equality of rights for men and women? Doubtful. In terms of the women’s rights issues, this façade of caring just completely undermines the meaningful steps trying to be made. It is a band-aid, quick fix approach to address a problem with greater issues. What’s more important to look at, beyond the words, is the practical effects this act will achieve. As much as you apply meaning to a certain phrase, it doesn’t mean that people will actually take it into account.

Anyone else think Canada’s due for a referendum?

The air buzzed with excitement. The Olympic Torch will be in the neighborhood! By 2:30pm patients, family, and friends along with healthcare professionals lined West 28th Avenue in anticipation of seeing Mike Hopkins run by G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Center before passing the flame on to Canadian music icon, passing the flame on to Canadian music icon, Jann Arden in front of the Child & Family Research Institute.

Watch the video to hear Arden’s personal comments on being an Olympic Torchbearer.

Being the entertainer that she is, Arden spontaneously led the crowd in singing “O, Canada” with Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson participating enthusiastically.

Within an hour, two-time NBA MVP Canadian-born Steve Nash ran the Olympic Torch Route down West 49th Avenue after flying in the same day from the United States. He was in great spirits as fans loudly cheered him along. Nash passed the Olympic flame on to Vancouver Canucks Vice President of Business Development, Gord Forbes, before leaving for a flight back to the United States to play in the 2010 NBA All-Star Weekend in Dallas, Texas.

Walking down Granville Street in Vancouver tonight I saw something you hardly ever see in the Unite

Walking down Granville Street in Vancouver tonight I saw something you hardly ever see in the United States. Twenty something girls playfully singing and strutting to their national anthem. They were on the crosswalk and at the top of their lungs they were singing “Oh, Canada, our home and native land…” Of course patriotism and spirit are running high at the Olympics but the Canadians also have a very singable anthem with an extremely catchy melody. So catchy in fact, that John Furlong, the head of the Vancouver Olympic Committee, chose the English lyrics “With Glowing Hearts” and ”Des plus brillants exploits” from the French version as trademarked slogans for the 2010 Olympics. On the other hand, our Star Spangled Banner, composed when Francis Scott Key was watching the Battle of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, is set to the tune of a British drinking song and at one and a half octaves is more difficult to get right. We sing it with all due respect at sporting events but always wonder if the vocalist will get through it without becoming pitchy or butchering it with some bizarre rendition. The Canadian anthem, on the other hand, rolls off the tongue especially if you’re 20 something and maybe have had a couple drinks. Purists thought young Nicky Yanofsky, who sang it at the Opening Ceremony, took too many liberties with the melody but I think it’s pretty no matter how you sing it. So when Americans aren’t on the podium and Canadians are, you might be tempted to sing along.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

So, I just found a story from out east which talked about some schools in the east not playing the national anthem in the morning. That I just do not understand. I mean, two families complained on religious grounds? What religious grounds can there possibly be had with a national anthem? I mean sure, God is mentioned once but if you don’t believe in the Christian God, as I don’t then you just have to substitute that word for whatever deity that you believe in, in your mind. All it’s asking is that our nation be kept free and who wouldn’t want that?

Avalon–I absolutely adore the Avalon books and I’ve spent all summer reading them. I read Lady of Avalon which is a compilation of three stories about three high priestesses at Avalon. I read Priestess of Avalon which is about Elena or Helen the mother of Constantine. Told from the first person perspective this story is split up into three parts–when Elena is a young girl, a mother and an grandmother. It tells her story in a way that it was never told because the historical Helen, mother of Constantine is a mystery. I also read The Forest House which is the prequel to the Lady of Avalon and it deals with Gaius and Eilan a Roman officer and a Priestess and the forbidden love that they share. Another Avalon book that I read was Ravens of Avalon which was written about Boadicea and her daughters and the destruction of Mona by the Romans. With those books read, I’ve read all of the Avalon books. But Sword of Avalon is coming out in December and I am super excited!

I am also excited for Pirates of the Caribbean Four: On Stranger Tides. Which will come out in July 2011! ^_^ I has been formally announced and I for one can’t wait till it comes out! I know that the whole Elizabeth/Will story probably won’t be in there because Kira Knightly doesn’t want to do another Pirates film….but that’s okay I suppose. I mean more Pirates is good Pirates as far as I’m concerned. ^_^
