What an awesome and orderly God!! God’s accuracy may be observed in the hatching of eggs. For example:

The eggs of the potato bug hatch in 7 days;

Those of the canary in 14 days;

Those of the barnyard hen in 21 days;

The eggs of ducks and geese hatch in 28 days;

Those of the mallard in 35 days;

The eggs of the parrot and the ostrich hatch in 42 days.

Notice, they are all divisible by seven, the number of days in a week!

The lives of each of you may be ordered by the Lord in a beautiful way for His glory, if you will only entrust Him with your life. Only the One who made the brain and the heart can successfully guide them to a profitable end.

God’s wisdom is seen in the making of an elephant. The four legs of this great beast all bend forward in the same direction. No other quadruped is so made. God planned that this animal would have a huge body, too large to live on two legs. For this reason He gave it fulcrums so that it can rise from the ground easily.

The horse rises from the ground on its two front legs first. A cow rises from the ground with its two hind legs first. How wise the Lord is in all His works of creation!

God’s wisdom is revealed in His arrangement of sections and segments, as well as in the number of grains.

Each watermellon has an even number of strips on it’s rind.

Each orange has an even number of segments.

Each ear of corn has an even number of rows.

Each stalk of wheat has an even number of grains.

Every bunch of bananas has on its lowest row an even number of bananas, and each row decreases by one, so that one row has an even number and the next row an odd number.

The waves of the sea roll in on shore twenty-six to the minute in all kinds of weather.

All grains are found in even numbers on the stalks, and the Lord specified thirty fold, sixty fold, and a hundred fold – all even numbers.

God has caused the flowers to blossom at certain specified times during the day, so that Linnaeus, the great botanist, once said that if he had a conservatory containing the right kind of soil, moisture and temperature, he could tell the time of day or night by the flowers that were open and those that were closed!

Thus the Lord in His wonderful grace can arrange the life that is entrusted to His care in such a way that it will carry out His purposes and plans, and will be fragrant with His presence. Only the God-planned safe life is successful. Only the life given over to the care of the Lord is fulfilled.

Big Bird appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show in honor of Sesame Street’s 40th anniversary. Following his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel, Big Bird dropped by our studio for an off-the-record interview.

The Unauthrorized Interview

loosefemme: Hullo Mr. Bird, thanks for stopping by. Can I get you a hot toddy with birdseed?

Big Bird: (High, nasal voice) No honey, I gave it up ten years ago. Got with the program, A.A. for B.B.

loosefemme: That is surprising, Mr. Bird, given that you claimed to be six years old on Jimmy Kimmel.

Big Bird: Honey, I’ve been with Sesame Street forty years. And I still look exactly as I did the day we started. I may be 46, but I can still pass for six.

loosefemme: What’s your secret to staying young?

Big Bird: Worms and whatever I find in the trash can next to my nest.

loosefemme: Mr. Bird — er, do I call you ‘Mister’? On Jimmy Kimmel you referred to yourself as a boy. Are you, you know, a poofter.

Big Bird: “Poofter”? I don’t know what you’re talking about. Who do you think is inside this costume — a dame?

loosefemme: A gay man maybe? All’s I’m saying is, straight birds don’t nest, that is a gay thing. Plus you do that thing where you stroke your chest.

Big Bird: Honey I didn’t build my nest, don’t be silly. I custom-ordered it from Harry and David.

loosefemme: Ahem, I wanted to ask about your hands, they have three fingers. Aren’t you supposed to have wings? Your feet are orange foam rubber.

Big Bird: Birds have claws, dummy. Kind of like yourself. Aren’t you supposed to have manners?

loosefemme: Yes, but…. Okay Mr. Bird, last question, is it true that you were busted for drugs a couple of years ago?

Big Bird: (Widens eyes and draws up in chair. Sticks beak in my face. Speaks slowly and loudly as if to a child.) Se-sa-me Street is a child-ren’s show. We don’t con-done drug or al-co-hol use. Just say no! (Sits back in chair, beak curled in dismay).

loosefemme: Okay Mr. Bird, I read somewhere that –

Big Bird: (Shoves beak two inches from my nose). This-line-of-inquiry-will-stop-right-now.

loosefemme: Oh-okay Mr. Bird. One more thing — are you supposed to be a canary?

Big Bird: (Stands up and lopes out, calls over shoulder) I am a rara avis, honey. Buh-bye now! (White puddle glistens on the chair).

I had these earrings once that I got from the hippie store in the mall (you know, robust patchoulli scent, the caveman cashier looks like be can rip up some bongos, the Bob Marley belt buckles are under a glass case, etc.) but they were carved from wood and one broke. I was eternally sad. Until one day at the craft store I was looking at the huge plethora of Sculpey colors, and thought, “Shit son! I can make those earrings myself!” (I may or may not have said this out loud.) So here is my sad attempt-

Well, there are two things unusual about this variety of canary.

This particular bird belongs to the red factor canary strain.

Red factor canaries did not appear from a mutation within the canary species. That color does not exist in the normal canary genome.

Instead, this color came about through hybridization with the black-hooded red siskin from South America. The fertility of the canary/black-hooded red siskin hybrids was not very good, but a few were fertile and were bred back into the canaries.

The red coloration that comes from the black-hooded red siskin requires a diet rich in carotenoids. The flamingo requires exactly the same sort of diet to maintain their pink plumage.

At one time, canary association would not allow this color because of the long standing rule that no show canary should be fed an unnatural diet.

But now it is a popular color-bred bird and, for some reason, always available at Petco.

It’s two years since my last trip to London and this time my agenda was to primarily just hang

It’s two years since my last trip to London and this time my agenda was to primarily just hang out and meet up with old and new friends. I had timed this trip to coincide with friend Chris (who lives an hour or so away from me in southern California and) who would also be in London for part of her trip in the UK.

Fortunately, just four days after booking my flight I suddenly had a new purpose for my trip…the announcement that my favorite actor John Simm would be on stage in a new play in the West End! That’s great! I was so very fortunate to see him two years before in Elling and after his beautiful performance I vowed never to miss any opportunity to see him on stage…and the next time would also be more than once!

But first, no trip to London is complete without meeting up with Denzylle who I’ve known for about ten years now. On Monday, Denzylle and I had the opportunity to join Chris and her friend Tony for their day planned full of splendid activities, which included:

The Darkest Victorian London Walking Tour and a visit to

After a short pub crawl we end up at the The Anchor

Denzylle, Chris, Shelley, Tony at The Anchor Pub

By then it was about time for the four of us to see John Simm in “Speaking in Tongues” at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

John Simm in 'Speaking in Tongues' at The Duke of York's Theatre

I really enjoyed this play during its preview run. The split screen scenes with the synchronized scripts are incredibly interwoven and the timing is unbelievable work. John’s 2nd role is my fav of his two. Story is mainly on relationships, communication and trust, with great suspense scenes, a missing woman and some funny lines to ease things a bit here and there.

After the performance we met John at the stage door exit for a group pic!

Shelley, John Simm, Chris at the Duke of York's Theatre

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of my passions is that I am a lifelong horse-lover and learned to ride as an adult. In addition to my day job, I spent 10 years of concentrated schooling at a few equestrian centers on hunters-jumpers, attended a handful of clinics given by professionals and inevitably, in order to offset my lesson and clinic expenses, worked part-time for a number of years at my last trainer’s barn. Unfortunately even supplementing my riding lessons wasn’t enough…it’s all very expensive and I had to give up riding for about the last 10 years now.
BUT there’s nothing like a vacation to pull out all the stops and do the things we love to do the most! So, I arranged for a 1-hour private guided hack/lesson at Wimbledon Village Stables. And that’s when I also experienced my first London Tube “Service has been Suspended” announcement while I was at the station ready to leave!!! Arrghhh! Service suspended at Putney Bridge?! Take a bus from there? LOL well by the time I tried to make other arrangements on the fly, I simply took the Tube as far as I could… and it seemed service was resumed because I made it all the way to Wimbledon and had a great ride out in the parklands.
Wimbledon Village Stables
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On previous trips I stayed in hotels in central London, but this time I tried the Docklands area and not only added the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) to my repertoire of London transport options, but also added new areas of sight-seeing which included the following:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But hang on!! What’s with all the sight-seeing? I thought I was supposed to be meeting up with Old and New friends!!! I was thrilled to be able to join up again with Chris and Tony to meet briefly with writer, producer and director, Sacha Bennett for a quick coffee. Due to work commitment last Oct 2008, I had missed attending the London premiere of Sacha’s first feature film, Tu£sday. Now, having seen both gorgeous films (also his award-winning short “Devilwood“), I cannot wait for more of his work! Sacha has a number of potential projects lined up…so hopefully the wait won’t be a long one!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Later in the week I also met up again with Denzylle for the popular early evening Jack the Ripper Walking Tour!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday I travelled to Houghton Regis to meet up with friend, David. The last time we met was all of 10 minutes at Piccadilly Circus! I blame the London Tube strike back then for my being late!
Well this time we certainly made a day of it! A Thousand Heartfelt Thanks to David’s lovely wife Kerrie for a perfect start in the morning by letting me ride her beautiful horse, Gemma, for a quick hack in the arena and then out in the surrounding lands.
A morning hack on Gemma (Wildmoor Gemini) - Thanks Kerrie!
Kerrie then let me borrow [or is that good riddance? ] her husband for the rest of the day. David and I took a drive over to Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk for a brewery tour at the Greene King Visitor Centre.
On the way I noticed a bizarre traffic speed control device…which entails installing a physical barrier steadfastly in the one direction lane of traffic, thereby forcing cars to slow down or ultimately stop in order to move out into the opposite lane of oncoming traffic in order to get around the barrier. The hell?!?
"Give Way To Oncoming Vehicles" - Thanks, since there's a sign on a pole blocking my lane!!
Anyway, I digress!! Back to the Brewery Tour!! Here’s a great pic of David (aka R.S. )
…before getting in the car to head to our final destination, Harlow, Essex and…
THE DOGS at Harlow Stadium!!!
Harlow Stadium - Greyhound Racing
I love going to the racetrack to bet on the ponies but I had never been to a greyhound track!! I was really looking forward to this experience and indeed it was!
Harlow Greyhound Racetrack
My fav bet in horse racing is an “Exacta Box” so I went with the same type of bet, “Reverse Forecast” for the dogs. I only need to pick the two dogs that I think will come in first and second or vice versa. This is actually 2 bets in one so my £1 wager cost £2 per race…steep I know! lol So, I was thrilled when one of my bets paid off!! I can’t remember how much I won exactly…about £15, I think? David won on one of his bets as well.
And They're OFF! Harlow Greyhound Racetrack
It’s still hard to pick winners even with only 6 dogs in every race. Horse racing has at least 2 times the number, you’d think dogs would be easier to get lucky!
Here’s a vid of the start of one of the races (plus the dogs at full speed as they head towards the finish!)
Thanks again to David and Kerrie for such a fantastic day! David, I think next time it’s the Cheese Rolling event for us, then?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Saturday, and while it may be my last full day in London, it’s certainly not the least of times, to finally meet NEW friends, plus one more chance after to see John Simm on stage!

I also met new friend Leigh Ann but our pic together (also with Tracy plus another)…while absolutely hysterical…is still under review by the zany police!! LOL

It’s hard to leave after such a wonderful week meeting wonderful friends, traveling the Tube, Bus, DLR, National Rail, seeing London again and the beautiful surrounding areas of England. But the only thing that saw me through my sadness in leaving was that my vacation holiday was only half over! Hey! Now that’s not too shabby! Early the next morning I was on my way to Heathrow Airport and Berlin, Germany!!

Imagine this: You walk into a pet store, looking for a canary, because, i don’t know, maybe yo

Imagine this: You walk into a pet store, looking for a canary, because, i don’t know, maybe your coal mine is having dirty air issues or something. The salesman, eager to please, walks you over to a cage with a duck sitting in it.

I may be yellow, but I ain't no canary, yo.

He says, “Do I have just the thing for you, check out this canary. He is a new, better breed of canary. He has webbed feet, can swim, quacks rather than sings, he’s bigger. We call this the web-footed hydro ultracanary. You’ll love him.”

So you buy the “canary” and take him into your coal mine, where he quacks incessantly. In fact, he is still waddling around quacking about ten minutes after you and all of the other miners are lying dead from breathing poisonous air.

In this case, the brand promise (a canary) and the brand experience (a duck with strong lungs) did not match. If you had been looking for a duck, this little guy would have probably been perfect. But as a canary… not so much.

One of my favorite brand rules is to call your ducks ducks. What do I mean? Make things simple for your customers. Don’t make them learn your language or analyze your intent in order to understand your message. Be straight with them.

When naming products (a subject that I’ve discussed previously here), you may choose to use simple descriptive names rather than creating a new brand every time you create a product. What is Red Hat Enterprise Linux? It is Linux, designed for enterprise customers, and made by Red Hat. Simple.

New brands create complexity for customers. In some cases creating a new brand may be warranted, for a number of reasons (brand separation, different markets, different audiences, etc.). But each brand you create adds a layer of translation burden for your customers. My view? Only create new brands when there are no other good alternatives.

Here’s an example of how simple descriptive names help: What if Red Hat had named Red Hat Enterprise Linux Red Hat Megawowzit instead. From a customer’s point of view, here’s how the thought process goes:

Oh look, Red Hat has a new product.
It is called Red Hat Megawowzit.
I wonder what it is?
Here we go, Megawowzit is a version of Linux designed for enterprise customers.

When you call a duck a duck, you simplify this process– those last two lines go away.

But naming is just one example of where you should call a duck a duck. Positioning is the place where companies make the most outrageous mistakes. When you are talking about your product (or company) strengths, are you telling the truth? Or are you selling people ducks disguised as canaries?

When working through your positioning exercise, and deciding on your points of difference, be sure they are real and not aspirational (if aspirational, they may actually be points of parity).

Ask yourself, would my current customers agree this a strength of ours? If you are claiming something in your positioning that you can’t actually deliver, you are creating misalignment between your brand promise and your brand experience.

And when brand promise and brand experience are badly misaligned, unhappy customers (and former customers) start multiplying. Not necessarily because your product or company is bad, but because you misrepresented them. There is nothing wrong with a duck… that is, unless you are passing it off as a canary.

In the open source world, we talk a lot about transparency, and calling a duck a duck is really just another way to be more transparent. It makes things easier for your customers, but it also makes you more credible and trustworthy too.

Canadian financier Paul Reichmann has been forced to sell his remaining stake in London’s Canary Wharf development, British media reported Monday.(Robin Nowacki/Associated Press)

?British media reports say Canadian businessman Paul Reichmann has given up his stake in London’s Canary Wharf development.

Property developer Songbird Estates PLC announced Monday that it has increased its stake in Canary Wharf Group to almost 70 per cent after acquiring a nearly nine per cent holding from German lender Commerzbank AZ, for the equivalent of $177 million.

According to London’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, which cited unnamed sources close to the matter, those shares belonged to Reichmann but had been used as collateral against loans to Dresdner, a Commerzbank subsidiary.

Dresdner was acquired by Commerzbank earlier this year.

Unclear why collateral being called in

It is not clear why the collateral is being called in, but it raises questions about the real estate tycoon’s finances.

Reichmann holds about an eight per cent stake in Songbird, but that equity is likely to be diluted to almost zero after Songbird issues $1 billion in new equity. That’s expected to happen later this week, the Telegraph reported.

Reichmann, 78, was the driving force behind the landmark development, a massive complex that covers more than 38 hectares, after brokering a deal with then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher in 1987. The deal would end a 22-year association with the luxury real estate development.

The massive scale of the development project in London’s eastern docklands led his Toronto company, Olympia & York, then one of the biggest real estate developers in the world, into bankruptcy in 1992. Reichmann fought back, reacquiring Canary Wharf from banks in 1995.

In 2004, he lost control of Canary Wharf for the second time as the Songbird consortium acquired a controlling stake for nearly $3 billion. Reichmann maintained his small stake of 8.45 per cent of the Class B shares.

I haven’t uploaded a lot of my latest work (and by latest I mean my last semester of school). I tried to make a series about identity issues. This is my first edition of the series out of (so far) 2 – which is bad, real bad, like I don’t even want to talk about the second one. If you can’t tell, it’s a canary wearing a mask of a woodpecker. It’s an 8 x 8 woodcut with screen printing and some monotype screen printing.

Oh school. How I [somewhat] miss thee.
