Viva Cozumel, Viva Cancun, Viva o México!

Boa Viagem!!!

A Dog’s Day Inn – Cancun - specializes in personalized pet care. If you’re traveling for a family vacation, traveling for work or a weekend pleasure trip, contact us at adogsdayinn@ymail.com.

We understand the stresses associated with leaving your pet behind. We also understand animals are more relaxed and comfortable in their own home environment, so, as an alternative to cramped, stuffy kennels, we offer private dog sitting. We will visit your home at least twice a day to ensure your pet is fed, watered and walked as needed. We promise to stay with them for a cuddle as well as some playtime.

We also feel it’s in your best interest to keep your travels private, so while we are tending to your animal(s), we will make your home seem occupied by turning on lights, adjusting temperature controls if need be and leaving a radio or a television on for company… G-Rated shows only, of course.

If your pet is sick, on medication or elderly, we will personalize our care to their needs. We tend to all animals according to your instruction.

Our goal is to ensure your pet receives the best stress-free care possible while you’re away. We will also provide a daily e-mail of updates on both your animal(s) as well as your home.

Please contact us at adogsdayinn@ymail.com to schedule your dog-sitting appointment.

Boa Sorte e boa viagem!

As I mentioned in my previous blog after our day at Playa del Carmen we decided to go to El D’

As I mentioned in my previous blog after our day at Playa del Carmen we decided to go to El D’Pa Bistro in Parque de las Palapas. Here is their link for more information www.eldpa.com/about They have been around for several years and my husband and I have always enjoyed going there for a glass of wine (me) a beer (him) and escargots. There aren’t many places in Cancun that you can find escargots so this makes D’Pa a great place to go if you enjoy the “mighty snail”. They are also quite well-known for their crepes and beef bourginon and other french dishes. We always like to sit outdoors on the patio but they also have a lovely large indoor seating area with an upstairs area as well.

El D'Pa Bistro

They often have live music later at night but by that time we have usually moved on to another place. On Saturday we went with my Mom and we were expecting some more of our friends to show up but they didn’t-such is the way of Cancun! We ordered two dozen escargots with lots of bread to sop up the butter, parsley, garlic jus and wine and beer to wash it all down-not a calorie-wise meal at all but as always it was DELICIOUS!! Once we realized that no one else was coming we ordered another round of drinks-this time I had a lychee martini (they have a varied list of exotic martinis) and we simply enjoyed our own company as we watched all the cars frantically trying to find a place to park .

Parque de las palapas is always a zoo on Fridays, Saturdays and especially on Sundays as families flock to the “park” (which really isn’t a park per se but more a gathering place made of concrete and palapas).http://www.cancun.com/Editorial/Parque-de-las-Palapas/ to listen to music, eat hot corn on the cob slathered in mayonnaise, cream, chili powder, and cheese or eat quesadillas hot off the grill, or to buy arts and crafts or simply to hang out with your boyfriend (there are never any shortages of young couples making out on the benches )

After a few hours at D’Pa we decided to call it a night and head home. It had been a long but great day out to Playa del Carmen and Cancun. We finished our weekend off on Sunday watching part 2 and 3 of The Pirates of the Caribbean ( I just love Jack Sparrow!) and generally relaxed. Now, I must think of something fun to do this coming weekend!

Well it is exactly 3 months and counting till House, KP and I depart to ‘Tour of Duty II – Spring Break’ on February 24, 2010. Our trip covers in order – Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Miami, Cancun (Mexico), Las Vegas then Hawaii before the trek back home. In saying that, by the time we depart it would have been 2 years since we toured Vietnam, Philippines and Thailand or as we’ve now called it – Asia Assault 2008. Enjoy the video montage (cheers KP) of my adventures in Asia.

Cancun is a place where most people will visualize and remember the crystal blue waters and the long white beaches that seems to stretch out forever. What is not always obviously known is that Cancun also has one of the most beautifully preserved natural parks that you will able to discover as a tourist. It is mostly untouched by modern development and you should definitely put this on the list of things to do while you’re in Cancun

A Mayan port in the ancient culture was Tulam and still has the Mayan feel about it today, the Temple named El Castillo stands in protection of the ocean. You will be amazed by the sheer natural beauty of the points of Tulam as you observe the sea from lofty heights of this wondrous place.

Your next stop after Tulam should be Xel-Ha which is close to the Riviera Maya, you can partake in snorkeling and swimming here and have a relaxing time in this tranquil region of the coast. You can see a big floating long bridge inside the waters here as a natural draw card to the area.

From there; ease into the jungle scene for an adventure in Cancun at Sian Ka’an which is one of the largest natural reserves in all of Mexico. You can go hitchhiking to the tallest lookout tower or take a boat tour that will take you down through the canals in the reserve an towards the Mayan ruins. This is an area of rich history and has plenty to offer on the Mayan culture.

Once again you can go snorkeling and explore underground caves and cenotes, mineral deposits here are many centuries old and offer many hours of exploration. Many different types of birds reside here and they are friendly enough to come down and sit on your shoulder.

Thousands of pink flamingos call Rio Lagartos home at this wild refuge in Cancun. In April to August these magnificent birds form mud nests along the shallow shoreline. The park itself was built in 1979 and covers a huge tract of land of over 118,000 acres of all natural parkland’s. This area is home to turtles, jaguars and over 200 different species of birds, a definite eco-tourism area which encases jungle, swamps and coastline. Garrafon National Reef Park

Make some time to wander along throughout Garafon after taking the boat cruise on to Isle Mujeres. This will keep you busy in itself for some time as there is much to see and do here. There exists here a Mayan temple at Blue Eyes caves and a panoramic tower and a bridge to climb up. You can see many parrots here and ride kayaks with a glass bottom view to delight in the views of the sea floor. If you’re feeling adventurous, try bungee jumping and for those who want to investigate the beautiful corals, go scuba diving. Exploring the habitats of turtle and swimming with the dolphins are among the main attractions here.

Be sure not to miss the Natural Park at Aktun Chen, there are caves here for you to explore that are estimated to be at least 5 million years old. These caves have rivers running through them and check out the wildlife living in the outside of the caves. Observe monkeys, wild boar, deer and many other different animals in their natural state.

If reptiles are your thing there is a large reptile park here to be visited with 15 different species of native snakes.

There is 988 acres of untouched wonderland to explore here and you will love the call of the monkeys echoing through the jungle.

On Saturday my husband Cesar and my Mom and I decided to go to Playa del Carmen for the day for lunc

On Saturday my husband Cesar and my Mom and I decided to go to Playa del Carmen for the day for lunch and to walk around on the 5th avenue. We set out at 11.30 am and made the 45 minute trip down to Playa. Once we found parking we set out along the quinta avenida (5th ave. ) for a pre-lunch stroll to check out all the new stores and restaurants as it had been about 6 months since my last visit there. I am always surprised by all the new buildings going up. We saw some new condos and eateries as well as new stores. They all looked very modern. We also noticed lots of new gelato places. You can’t walk very far without passing one.

I am always amazed at how much Playa del Carmen has grown since 1995 when I moved to Cancun. The highway to get to Playa now has 2-3 lanes on each side not like it used to be when each side only hade one lane and there wasn’t a shoulder so driving was always nerve-wracking especially at night as cars were constantly trying to pass each other whether it was safe to do so or not. Playa itself has also grown so much and seems to continually spread out. I remember for years that there weren’t any fast food chain restaurants permitted and the 5th ave. was less than half the length that it is today. Many of the businesses have changed but there are still many that have been there for years and will probably be there for years to come which is no easy feat in Playa’s ever-changing tourist scene.

I have always loved Playa though I wouldn’t want to live there as it is too small for me but I do enjoy visiting and we often spend the night there in a hotel and go out dancing. They have a great choice of places to eat and lots of really cool bars that have outdoor seating so that you can watch the world go by. We decided to eat in one of our favourite bar/restaurants on Saturday. The Tequila Barrel http://www.tequilabarrel.com/ has been around for several years now and at night they have live music. The outdoor tables are made out of barrels and they have comfy seats and a fairly diverse bar menu for food and drinks. We chose the lunch special for 110 pesos (around 10 CDN) which was a cheeseburger, fries and 2 beers.

Tequila Barrel

After lunch we headed down the quinta avenida again towards Paseos Playa del Carmen (an outdoor plaza) passing more gelato places. We checked out some new stores and then decided to stop at La Bodeguita en Medio http://www.labodeguitadelmedio.com.mx/ which is a cuban restaurant-bar. It is based on the original place in Cuba that was started in 1942 in an old Bodega where it became rather famous. People like Erroll Flynn, Lou Costello and Ernest Hemingway have visited there in the past. I too have also visited La Bodeguita in Cuba many years ago and we had a Mojito and wrote on the wall which is the custom to leave your name on your first visit. La Bodeguita in Playa has continued the tradition of graffiti on the walls so on this visit my Mom, Cesar and I also left our mark while we enjoyed a Mojito.

mojitos are made with mint, rum, powdered sugar, lime, and club soda.

When the mosquitoes started biting we paid our bill and made our way back to the parking lot but not before we succumbed to a mandarin flavoured gelato en route It had been a great day and it wasn’t over yet. We arrived home and rested for awhile and then headed off to el D’ Pa Bistro but I will save that blog for tomorrow.

coconuts growing in Cancun

I’m back from Cancun and finally starting to recover from the intense humidity–about 95 percent–and nursing some mosquito bites so nasty that it looks like I’m coming down with a case of the chicken pox.

But aside from the weather (Hurricane Ida couldn’t stop me) and some bugs, Cancun did not disappoint.

There’s something I just love about coconuts–and piña coladas don’t even begin to cover it. All over Cancun, I saw palm trees with coconuts growing on them. In some cases, I saw them ripe and brown and falling off the tree; in other instances I saw gardeners trimming the leaves and picking up broken coconuts that had fallen to the ground. To some, getting to see coconut trees is no big deal, but to a Chicagoan it was a little slice of heaven. How glorious to have these natural beauties growing in your front yard or on the side of the road near where you live. These are things I dream about during the long Chicago winters.

As I was only in Cancun for a few days and working when I wasn’t sleeping, I didn’t get much of a chance to explore local taco joints much to my chagrin. But I did eat a few noteworthy items and jotted down a few thoughts to share.

sopa de lima

Sopa de lima, the quintessential Yucatecan dish, was undoubtedly the culinary highlight of my short trip. This version was the traditional broth with the addition of shredded chicken, strips of red bell pepper and nopales (also known as cactus paddle, and new to me as an ingredient of this soup), a generous floating slice of lime and a handful of perfectly crunchy tortilla strips which I promptly devoured before I even managed to take a photo.

I’m big on soups, and as my husband might also remind me, I’m big on lime juice even when it doesn’t technically belong there. I’ve never made sopa de lima at home; my first authentic taste of it was at El Faisan, a Yucatecan restaurant in Cuernavaca (a stone’s throw from Mexico City) about a year ago. Sopa de lima is simply a chicken stock-based soup with a lot less lime juice than you’d think neccesary in order to be called lime soup. A number of the recipes I’ve been studying include either serrano chiles or habaneros, and many have interesting spices like cloves or bay leaves and peppercorns in the preparation as well.

I’ll be experimenting with some sopa de lima recipes from Spanish-language cookbooks this winter, and when I find one that I think is worth sharing, I’ll let you know. I’m hoping to also get some more authentic sopa de lima taste-testing in when I travel to Cozumel soon. If you’ve got a good recipe, please get in touch and share so I can try it out. I’ve seen so many variations on the recipe that it almost makes my head spin when I think about it. Of course, I’ll be seeking advice and recipe suggestions from friends and family in Mexico when I make my annual December visit.

Other food notables from the trip: each day with breakfast, I ate chistorra, a notoriously fatty, delicious, fast-curing pork or pork/beef sausage not unlike chorizo (except for its size). The first night, I had a torta de cochinita pibil with an elegantly sliced avocado garnishing the plate, and as you can probably imagine, it didn’t take me too long to enjoy it–avocado and all.

I’d love to see any comments about your favorite Yucatecan foods as I’ll be headed back to the region in January.

This is the true story, of seven strangers, picked to live in a house, work together and have their lives taped, to find out what happens, when people stop being polite, and start getting real… or is it?

“‘Do you think it’s real?’, ‘Compared to what?’, ‘Well… to… I guess compared to things that are completely real.’ Twenty more seconds passed. ‘Is the show taped or edited in the Fourth Dimension?’ she asked. ‘No.’ ‘Are the characters robots?’ ‘No.’ ‘Can the episodic plotlines only be perceived by people who have ingested mind-expanding hallucinogens, such as lysergic acid diethylamide, mescaline, phencyclidine, ketamine, or psychedelic mushrooms?’ ‘No.’ ‘Well then,’ she concluded, ‘it sounds real to me.’” (Klosterman 25).

In his novel Sex, Drugs, & Cocoa Puffs, Chuck Klosterman asserts this dialogue, suggesting his doubt for the (for lack of a better term) ‘real-ness’ or reality of what happens on the MTV show The Real World. SO let’s take a look at some of the ‘real-ness’ that the show portrays.

ARTICLE 1: The Real World Cancun trailer. First of all- this is a TRAILER… for a TV show. TV! Not the movies. This is not Paramount Pictures presents The Real World. This is MTV Network showing a bunch of attractive 20-somethings into a penthouse mansion, stocking them with alcohol, and giving them the freedom to romp around the beaches of Cancun, Mexico all day. In the trailer we see what are probably the most exciting bits of the show pulled together into a theatrical persuasion for the MTVgen to tune in. But the problem is that viewers now already know what they’re in for. MTV has developed a sort of formula for the show: opinionated people + cultural differences + alcohol + no responsibility = DRAMA.

“They have a nonfiction situation that is supposed to have no relationship to other nonfictions. They have to behave as if what they’re doing hasn’t been done before . Real Worlders always get into arguments, but you never hear them say ‘Oh, you’re only saying that because you know this is going to be on TV,’ even though that would be the best comeback 90 percent of the time.” (Klosterman 36).

The bottom line is that there is NOTHING real about The Real World anymore, it has become a pre-fabrication of locations and storylines. They’ve taken the factors that made it a hit, all the good parts like the fighting and the sex and getting in trouble with the law and getting in trouble with girlfriends or boyfriends, and chosen people who are most likely to exhibit these behaviors, and taken these bits and edited them together into the reasons The Real World is a cultural artifact.

The demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots
~Henry Louis Mencken quotes

If you want to go to Cancún, you are going to be impressed for how idiots they think we are. The place is full of “ecotourism” places that damage the nature, do not consider their ecological footprint, only caters to foreigns (ignoring completely the Mexicans, owners of that natural beauty) and have zero Corporate Social Responsibility.

I just found this place called “Eco Colors“, these asine people offer a crocodile tour, as described here:

We invite you to experience one of your life’s most exciting adventures while learning about the two crocodile species that live in Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Enjoy a great day getting to see and probably capture the wetland’s largest predator. From our boats you will feel the thrill and emotion of participating in a crocodile research and conservation project, working with two-to-nine feet-long wild crocodiles. This trip is coordinated by Amigos de Sian Ka’an local ONG; they are in charge of the reserve and crocodile research.

This eco – tour begins at 5:00 PM with pick up at your hotel, the return will be approximately 01:00 AM.

These are some pictures of what they do, look the handling of the reptiles, look how they close with duct tape their jaws, look how smiling these assess are, thinking they are practising green tourism.
