30/30 Review

Roundhouse Rising got off to an incredible start at the launch of Roundhouse Records’ 30/30 Album, with raucous ska-punk to acoustic singer-songwriters to rap and spoken-word the 30/30 night, album and artists certainly have it all…

Up-and-coming DJ Joss Ryan got the packed-out Roundhouse pumped for a night of first-class talent throughout…

But first up we had singer-songwriter Vanessa Gimenez who performed a couple of lovely, acoustic, husky-voiced covers including Jake Bugg’s Lightning Bolt and David Guetta’s Titanium. Vanessa then moved onto play a few of her own tunes including the epic, sweeping ‘Space’ supported by her band creating a huge, swirling sound that had the Roundhouse completely enthralled.

Blazer Splitz Boys were up next and they rocked onto the stage in beaming white blazers and performed 5 catchy tracks backed by the amazing Roundhouse band. Between travelling to the US and getting on with their schoolwork Blazer Splitz Boys forgot to actually show us any splits but we’ll forgive ‘em as their energy was enough to make up for it!

Next up was Roundhouse Band Slam champion Callum Rafferty (pictured) performing his song Tonight’s The Night mashed in with Ed Sheerans’ You Need Me, I Don’t Need You which had the crowd going totally wild – we can’t wait to see what Callum gets upto next!

The penultimate artist of the night was rapper Demo, who has toured and supported the likes of N-Dubz, Skepta and Mclean. Demo burst onto the stage and performed a selection of his best tunes including his cheeky 30/30 track with bouncing whistles and squeaks galore, again accompanied by the ever-awesome Roundhouse band.

And last but not least indie ska-punk all-girl band The Tuts hit the stage with loads of attitude and totally rocked out giving us a glimpse of what will be happening when they tour with Kate Nash later this year (lucky Kate!). These girls have got bucket loads of banter and are definitely worth checking out live!
If you missed the gig, fear not as you can check out some of the album here – the full album is available to download from iTunes!

Decided to walk after work towards the North where we live to make the most of the enjoyable hot & humid day in London. When we hit Camden, we remembered that we should try the Mango Room restaurant, a modern Caribbean style resto… & what a perfect choice it was! On our plates, salmon with curry coconut sauce, seabass with mango & pepper sauce, along with fried plantain & lovely roti bread… We ended our delicious meal with mango & passionfruit cheesecake. I highly recommend for a taste of caribbean summer…

The north-western end of Abbey Road begins in Kilburn, at the intersection of Quex Road and West End Lane and was named for the nearby Kilburn Priory and its associated Abbey Farm.

Rejected Soho and Holborn children faced disappointment after 180 were denied all of their preferred choices of secondary school this month.

Campaigners are still fighting for a local secondary school south of the Euston road after about thirty years to unite south Camden districts including Holborn and Soho.

But Camden council announced plans last Monday, not of building a new school, but to expand South Camden Community School.

Every year about 180 Camden borough children are refused all of their secondary school choices on 1st March and have to take the left over places across London for who this is ‘a deeply distressing kick in the teeth’ said a group of parents to Camden council.

Where’s my school campaign have fought Camden Liberal Democrat and Tory Coalition council for four years for a school south of the Euston road for local children to attend.

Campaigner and mother of 2 Emma Jones emphasized the importance for such a multicultural and densely populated area like Camden to have local children at local school, rather than expanding a school in another area, as it brings the community together.

Year 6, parents from Christopher Hatton Primary School, Holborn, wrote to Camden’s political leaders after this years results and said ‘our children’s bonds unite us as parents.’

They asked for a local school not expansions in other areas which had already been attacked by Camden Labor Councillor Nasim Ali as ‘a risky lab test with education.’

In defence of the councils failure to react to demands they claim there is enough secondary school places planned until 2017 but Christopher Hatton Primary School parents said that this year 24 children are separated across secondary schools in thirteen boroughs.

Despite a £200 million ‘Building Schools for the Future’ government grant, Camden Council initially argued they had no site for a school. Where’s My School campaigners found an unused government site on Wren Street and put forward the suggestion.

The council also claim Wren street residents are complaining that ‘a secondary school is a no go for tenants.’ They have reported problems with youths in the area. Others commented there is not enough outdoor space on the Wren Street Site.

The council suggested a ‘priority zone’ which would ensure children who go to south Camden primary schools prioritized places in south Camden secondary schools.

This has been criticized by Camden Labor MP Frank Dobson and protesters as blanketing arguments for the need of another school.

Graham French of Allan Edwards and Co., London solicitors, said the ‘priority zone’ challenged the ‘Greenwich Judgment’ which stops London schools discriminating against applicants outside their boroughs. It also creates a situation where children living half a mile away would have priority over children living next door.

With the coming general elections the council seem keen to fulfil their pre-election promise of a school for north Camden voters but south Camden campaigners remain frustrated saying ‘I don’t see why anything should change if the current lot stay in power.’
