Well, aside from getting engaged last night ( best Halloween ever! ), the second most enthusiastic news I can share is that we visited the SFMOMA today and I was mighty delighted by the multi-media works of Candice Breitz.  With ‘Mother’, six different video screens orchestrated clips of 6 famous actresses in roles portraying the often difficult mother/child relationship.   It was funny, disturbing, and totally engaging.

Plus, I had a really handsome fiance by my side.

Yesterday’s visit to SFMoMA was particularly rewarding. The Museum seemed much larger this time, perhaps it was because all of the building’s galleries were open. The above video ‘Mother’ by Candice Breitz was incredible. For this video piece, Breitz edited film performances by Faye Dunaway, Diane Keaton, Shirley MacLaine, Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon, and Meryl Streep to create a revealing composite of the Hollywood cliché of the difficult mother. The video attached presents the work in a different format than was experienced yesterday. At the SFMoMA Breitz’s video monitors were arranged in a single slightly concave row. Nor is it the full length version, the clip above stops rather abruptly.

A powerful achievement that must have employed months of editing. Really quite intense and enjoyable stuff.

It’s a pity the video above cuts off where it does since Shirley McLaine and Fay Dunaway really come in to full stride after that point. It is better to go to CANDICE BREITZ> then click on ‘work’, then ‘video’ to watch the the full length video in a better resolution and sound.

I mean, of course celebrated modern film maker Candice Breitz has a website, it just never occurred to me to find it before today. I had read about her in several magazines, but didn’t experience her work first hand till last Fall when Paul and I visited New Orleans. When I saw a small article in the new issue of Art in AmericaI got to googling, and am so glad I did!

Though Breitz has experimented with several different video and photographic themes, she is most famous for her large scale  installation tributes to modern pop singers. Each installation features 30 television screens stacked in a 5X6 grid which have synchronized videos playing of people singing along to recordings of different performers. The subjects in each video hear the music through earbuds so that in the resulting video the only audio track the viewer experiences is that of the sing along. Each of the singers were videotaped separately of each other, and as a result strange and unexpected harmonies are created,

The one Paul and I saw in New Orleans was titled “Legend”, focusing around the work of Bob Marley. It was, in a word, overwhelming. The screens were placed in an otherwise blackened room, with the volume blasting. The tall stack of screen looming impendingly over you seemed almost shrine-like. I found that the most captivating moments in the installation would occur during musical interludes and pauses in the song where the singers would all suddenly and in unison become silent, leaving you surrounded by other spectators in a deafeningly quiet space.

Each of these installations features an entire albums worth of songs, but on Breitz’s website she only includes one of the songs off of each. My favorite video is to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”, which you must must MUST see.. I would have loved to post it directly, but the site is all in flash and I couldn’t imbed it.

Australia, being a commonwealth country, celebrates Boxing Day.  You know, that event marked on the calendar with “Canada” following in parentheses.  For those of you that don’t have a Canadian handy to explain, Boxing Day is historically a time when the wealthy would give gifts to their household servants.  Hence, I imagine, the paid day off from work I had today.  In contemporary Australia, most folks take advantage of the holiday to shop the post-Christmas sales or watch the Boxing Day Test with some mates and a slab of tinnies. 

Not being big fans of shopping in crowded malls, and not having a TV, Kim and I were happy that the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art was also open today.  What’s more, admission is free, or more accurately it’s paid for in numerous small instalments through the ubiquitous goods and services tax.

What turned out to be my favourite piece, fully sick as they say here, was a video instalment of 16 Michael Jackson fans in Berlin simultaneously singing along to Thriller.  This requires a bit of work on your part to end up in the right place, so please stick with me.  Navigate to WORK -> VIDEO -> KING, make sure that your pop-up blocker didn’t block any of the content from this site, and turn the sound on (there isn’t any sound for the first few moments).  Now you can enjoy a small taste of what we experienced. 

Imagine this on 16 side-by-side flat panel screens in near-real-life proportion.  I was entranced, and ended up watching the whole 42 minute performance of the Thriller album.  At the end I felt like I had taken an anthropology course.

Der Kultur-Redaktion des SPIEGELS ist es zum Glück nicht gelungen, mich vom Besuch der Temporären Kunsthalle in Berlin abzuhalten: sollen doch die drei Videoinstallationen “Inner+Outer Space” von Candice Breitz bereits “schon in Mailand, Oldenburg und Hannover und sogar in London zu sehen gewesen” sein.*

Tja. Für den globetrottenden Kunst-Jet-Set ist es natürlich schon hart, dass die Künstlerin zur Eröffnung der Temporären Kunsthalle noch nicht ihr neuestes Werk “Him” zeigt - eine Dialog-Porträt-Videoarbeit mit 23 verschiedenen Rollen Jack Nicholsons aus vierzig Jahren.

Nicholson wird ab dem 28. November 2008 sicher auch klasse, aber ich bin in diesem Fall ganz ehrlich sehr dankbar, dass ich eher unvermutet zu einem der unterhaltsamsten Kunstgenüsse der letzten Zeit kam.Was ist zu sehen?

Von weitem eine blaue Box, Container-artig, die mich zunächst aber doch noch nicht fesselt, da die Treppenhausreste, die vom Palast der Republik als letztes noch nicht geschliffen sind, vor dem Fernsehturm für mich irritierender aussehen und meinen Blick im ersten Moment sehr viel stärker faszinieren.

Doch dann hinein in die jetzt noch Himmelblaue Wolkenbox. Neben den acht Ausstellungen, die für den Innneraum für die kommenden zwei Jahre zu sehen sein werden, sind auch insgesamt vier Projekte für die Außenfassade geplant. Durch die KunstBuchhandlung Walther König hindurch, an der Kasse vorbei, geht es ins Innere, die BlueBox wird zur BlackBox.

Im Ganzen sind nur drei Arbeiten zu sehen, für die lege ich aber jedem Besucher ans Herz, sich Zeit zu nehmen. Kunst-Hoppern und Hippness-Naschern wird sich der Reiz und der Zauber von “Inner + Outer Space” nur zu einem Bruchteil offenbaren.

Zunächst sehe ich Schwarz. Das passt schon, auch wenn einige Ausstellungsbesuchende vor lauter Dunkelheit gegen die Sitzbank laufen, auf der es sich empfiehlt, Platz zu nehmen.

Was ist die Idee ? Und wie wurde sie umgesetzt ?

Candice Breitz hat es geschafft, 25 Fans von John Lennon, 16 von Michael Jackson und 30 von Madonna zum Singen zu bringen. Und gesungen wurde jeweils einzeln(!) ein ganzes Album, das die Fans über Kopfhörer eingespielt bekamen: 39 Minuten lang “John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band” (1970), “Thriller” (1982) dauert 42 Minuten und “The Immaculate Collection” (1990) ganze 73 Minuten. Harte Arbeit. In Newcastle wurde August 2006 “Working Class Hero” (A Portrait of John Lennon), Juli 2005 in Mailand “Queen” (A Portrait of Madonna) und in Berlin “King (A Portait of Michael Jackson) aufgezeichnet.

Die daran anschließende Arbeit der in Berlin arbeitenden Südafrikanerin bestand daran, die Einzelaufzeichnungen zu drei virtuellen Chören synchron zusammen zu stellen.

Was ist an dem Ergebnis so faszinierend ?

Die Frau hat sich vorher Gedanken gemacht, nichts dem Zufall überlassen und ihren Darstellern doch alle Freiheiten gelassen. Die drei Arbeiten weisen strukturelle Ähnlichkeiten auf, sind aber doch alle unterschiedlich und sehr eigen. Die gelungene Komposition der Einzelaufnahmen zu Chören, die sich in einem stimmigen Gesamtbild wiederfinden, entfaltet Momente unerwartet positiver Energie und Schönheit. Das neu geschaffene Ganze ist auf beeindruckende und unterhaltsame Weise mehr als die die Summe der Einzelstimmen.

Die 25 John Lennon Fans hängen als riesige Video-Portraits gereiht im Inneren der Temporären Kunsthalle, die Video-Monitore leuchten im Dunkeln. Zum allergrößten Teil singen Männer, gegerbte Gesichter, wenige Junge, viele markige Ältere. Forschend direkte Blicke in die Kamera, aber auch konzentriert verinnerlichte Gesichter. Das Lennon-Album kannte ich gar nicht, trotzdem gab es bereits bei dieser ersten Installation Momente, in denen die synchronen Stimmen eine Intensität erreichten, die fast so ergreifend wie transzendierende Choräle in einer Kirche waren.

Nach zwanzig Minuten wurde ich aber neugierig, wo ich die Bilder zu den anderen Stimmen finden konnte, die im Hintergrund zu hören waren. Als Box in der Box sind für die Installationen King und Queen zwei weitere Räume eingerichtet. Diese Fans singen zwei Millionenseller der Popgeschichte, Alben, die sich ins kollektive Ohr und Gedächtnis gegraben haben, ob man will oder nicht. Ubiquitär in jedem H+M und in sämtlichen Radios dieser Welt “mit dem Besten aus den 80er und 90er“ zu hören. Deshalb ist es kein Wunder, dass – obwohl keine einziger Instrumentalklang zu hören ist, diese Lücke in meinem Ohr und Kopf nach einer Weile automatisch ergänzt wird.

Die 16 Fans von Michael Jackson sind nahezu als Ganzkörperportraits nebeneinander gereiht, was wegen seiner sehr spezifischen Jacko-Choreografie und Körpersprache, z.B. dem Moonwalk auch sinnvoll ist. Sehr spannend ist es zu beobachten, wie unterschiedlich diese 16 Menschen – eine sehr berlinesque Zusammenstellung – das Album interpretieren.

Zum Teil sind sie mit einem hochgradig differenziertem Bewegungsrepertoire ausgestattet, von Breitz am liebsten neben zurückhaltend-passiven Sängern positioniert, was die Darstellungs-Bandbreite umso deutlicher werden lässt. Die eher jungen Darsteller sind zum Teil sehr zeigefreudig, eine Bauchtänzerin flirtet auch in jeder Pause zwischen zwei Songs tänzelnd mit der Kamera. Hier wird gepost, zititiert, variiert. Michaels Hut, der Handschuh, die Gesten. Die Kamera hält durchgehend drauf, so dass auch die Momente ironischer Selbstdistanz, (“Mein Gott, was mach’ ich hier eigentlich?”) der Erschöpfung und kurze Trinkpausen mit aufgezeichnet werden.

Jeder ist auf seine Weise sehr engagiert und die Begeisterung überträgt sich aufs Publikum. Die Fans singen sich warm, steigern sich ihrer Inbrunst und sorgen für gute Laune bei den Zuschauern. Die Hingabe und der Enthusiasmus der Interpreten sind einfach umwerfend. Nach einer Weile kristallisieren sich Favoriten heraus, Außenseiter werden zu Lieblingen, einen kleinen Moment fühle ich mich wie bei DSDS.

Faszinierend bleibt aber das Ganze, die Augen wandern von Monitor zu Monitor, alle drei Installationen sind zu groß, um sie mit einem Blick zu erfassen, alle Details auf einmal aufzunehmen.

Den Italienern gelingt es mit ihrer Interpretation des Albums von Madonna (geborene Madonna Louise Ciccone) noch einmal eine ganz eigene Stimmung zu erschaffen. Inner + Outer Space ist so auch als interkultureller Vergleich zu lesen. Die Italiener sind sehr viel stärker darum bemüht “Bella Figura” zu machen, gebräunt, geschminkt, exaltiert – sehr nahe an der Diva orientiert. Das ganze wird immer wieder ironisch gebrochen, es wird während und zwischen den Aufnahmen viel gelacht. Bei den ernsteren, ruhigeren Songs schlägt die Stimmung von ausgelassen-heiter intensiv in fast religiöse Konzentriertheit um.

Der Spaß, den die Performer während der Aufzeichnung haben, ist deutlich zu spüren – Wie eine Welle trägt die geballte Kraft und Intensität der 30 Stimmen die Stimmung im Raum.

Spätfolgen

Auf der Heimfahrt nach Hamburg:

Madonna im Radio. Ich muss unwillkürlich lachen und sehe vor meinem inneren Auge statt der Queen of Pop 30 über- und nebeneinander gestapelte Bildschirme, auf denen sich 30 entzückende Italiener ihrer Leidenschaft hingeben.

Während der anschließenden Woche:

Mehrfach Ohrwurmbefall mit Billie Jean, Beat it, Holiday & Into the Groove.

Fazit:

Auf beeindruckend unterhaltsame Weise Hirnwäsche gelungen… Lächelnd und summend verlässt die Kunstfreundin die BlueBox der Temporären Kunsthalle.

12h00, un soleil majestueux accompagne mes pas vers le site du Fort Thüngen, et le ciel d’un bleu sans pareil me détournerais presque de l’escale artistique prévue ce jour, pour une interminable ballade dans les chatoyantes et vallonnées forêts des alentours de Luxembourg ville.

Il n’en sera rien…pour le meilleur.

La crainte de l’enfermement s’est évanouie dès mon premier pas dans le MUDAM, et pour cause. 3 modiques euros plus tard, la première salle d’exposition m’absorbe dans sa majesté architecturale et artistique.

Le bâtiment, œuvre de l’architecte sino-américain Ieoh Ming Pei, offre un exact équilibre entre ciel et terre, vestiges et ère moderne, calme et volupté. Porté par d’immenses verrières qui laissent les éléments naturels être une part intégrante de cette architecture à la fois ying et yang, parachevée en pierre calcaire et munie d‘une superficie totale de 10.000 m2, le musée dispose de près de 4.800 m2 de surfaces d‘exposition sur trois niveaux et se veut être le cocon d’un programme annuel d’expositions temporaires ouvert à tous les domaines de la création actuelle.

Entièrement conçu par des artistes, la vocation de ce lieu est d‘être à l’écoute de la création internationale et de l‘évolution des pratiques artistiques.

Et le musée est à la hauteur de ses aspirations. J’ai réellement été séduite par l’importance donnée à l’espace d’exposition, avec parfois une seule œuvre par salle. Ce parti pris nous éloigne de la rentabilisation de l’espace scénographique toujours plus flagrant dans des lieux comme Beaubourg, ou bien encore le MAMAC de Nice ou l’on se sait plus comment reprendre son souffle tellement le visiteur est sollicité.

L’organisation scénographique de l’exposition China power station part III – jusqu’au 15 septembre 2008 – installée sur les trois niveaux du musée laisse les oeuvres prendre toute leur ampleur et leurs sens, on peut parler d’une réelle écoute entre le lieu et son projet , les oeuvres, et le public.

CHINA POWER STATION: Part III est la troisième étape d’un projet d’expositions conçu encollaboration avec la Serpentine Gallery à Londres et le Astrup Museum of Modern Art à Oslo. Le projet a été conçu comme une exposition évolutive et dynamique, reflétant les transformations que connaît actuellement la Chine, chaque étape s’articulant autour d’une liste d’artistes et d’oeuvres différente, pensée en fonction du contexte dans lequel elle est présentée.

De même pour l’exposition de Candice Breitz Be My Somebody – Exposition du 26 avril au 22 septembre 2008, ou le parcours des salles ouvertes se transforme en exploration exaltante de la question de la construction de l’identité personnelle et collective. Un immense souvenir de l’installation King (A Portrait of Michael Jackson) ou les 42 minutes et 20 secondes d’immersion dans les relations qui lient les fans à leurs idoles ne peuvent laisser indifférent – Visionnage de l’oeuvre disponible sur le site internet de Candice Breitz.

Lauréate du Prix d’Art Contemporain Fondation Pierre de Monaco en 2007, Candice Breitz est connue pour ses photographies et ses vidéos qui explorent les impacts de la culture hollywoodienne et musicale sur les consciences contemporaines. Monuments est une série de cinq photographies que l’artiste a réalisées en collaboration avec le photographe Marcus Gaab en juin 2007 à Berlin. Ces cinq tableaux photographiques de large format, dont un de la Collection Mudam, sont des portraits de groupes de fans d’Iron Maiden, Britney Spears, Grateful Dead, Abba et Marilyn Manson.

Enfin, une fois le musée conquis, vous serez encore surpris de découvrir l’improbable charte graphique du lieu, et les sentiers boisés aux allures de randonnées du dimanche qui vous permettrons de regagner Luxembourg ville dans la quiétude la plus absolue.
