Just wanted to post this quick, last week we completed a candle observation activity. I broke the activity up into 3 parts: making observations for 5-10 minutes before the candle is lit, 15 minutes for observing the candle as it burned, and about 5-10 minutes after the candle was blown out. For each set of observations, they had to have one picture, ask 1 or 2 questions, and list 10 or more observations. I also provided rulers so they could take measurements of how tall the candle is, how big the wick was, the width of the candle, etc. For safety reasons, I lit the candles and made sure that the girls tied their hair back with string or a hair tie if they had one. I also placed the candles into beakers since I didn’t have candle holders.

This was a simple activity, but the kids loved it, and it was a great way to review a lot of the skills we learned this year. They were also able to observe physical and chemical changes, and watch the wax melt and “freeze” – I reminded them that changing from a liquid to a solid can happen at any temperature, it depends on the substance you are talking about.

Here’s a quick and simple idea for creating a quick Christmas centerpiece on your kitchen’s table. Simply plop down a holiday wreath of any kind and stick some pillar candles in the center! I’ve layered my red wreath on top of a Christmas green cloth napkin for a bit of contrast, but you could also put this arrangement on a beautiful tray or a mirror. Depending on how large the opening of the wreath is, you can play around with different kinds of candles, as well. Staggering different heights of candles would create a nice effect, as well.

Of course, by changing the wreaths and the color of the candles, this idea could work for any holiday, season or decor. In fact, this could be your complete solution to “the centerpiece question” for the rest of the year!

EASY AND BEAUTIFUL! And please, if you do have a centerpiece with any kinds of candles, don’t wait for a special occasion to burn them! Any night you have dinner with family, friends, or even your fabulous self deserves a lighted candle. There’s nothing sadder than seeing a bunch of perfect, never-lit candles in someone’s home. They are meant to be burned — so enjoy them!

Simple Christmas centerpiece

Feeling stressed out or tired from a long day of work? There are several ways to wind down after work. Some people go home and vege out on the couch, while others will pop open a bottle of wine and listen to soothing music.

Another alternative is to light up some aromatherapy candles around the house and let the soothing scents of the oils calm your body and mind. Better yet, run a nice hot bubble bath and lay in the tub with a candle lit and some music playing in the background.

Check out Zest Candle’s collection of special Aromatherapy Spa Candles. Choose among four soothing scents including Coastal Mist, Passion Fruit & Guava, Lavendar and Oak, or Tangerine Mandarin. Can’t decide? No problem, we carry a four pack votive with all four scents so you can try them all!

So, today I was planning to have this magical mish-mash of audio-visual moments that went right for

So, today I was planning to have this magical mish-mash of audio-visual moments that went right for me. Challenge #1 was “Count Your Blessings” which I chose to interpret as taking a moment to appreciate all the little things that worked for me over the course of a single day. Being my day off from work this was easier to do than one might suspect. Unfortunately I didn’t account for Quicktime not being nice to my MovieMaker. So until I can fix that and post a vidoe of my moments, I’ll simply throw up the post I began working on and hope you’ll be kind.

This is a list of things that went right for me today (you’ll notice I’m only doing the type-able stuff here).

my coupons printed right away

there was parking at the library near the door!

my books I wanted were waiting for me on the hold shelf

the store where I had to return a dvd player took it back with no arugments or fuss

the sky was a fantastic shade of blue- that always counts as a good thing to me

the puppies went willingly to their crate

I found a new litter poop scoop for under a dollar

I managed to get the 350+ photos on my SD card and the 250+ photos on my phone transferred onto my computer easy peasy

I found a hand-carved wax candle I really want to buy

None of this really needs a ta-da, but put it all together and it makes for a pretty awesome day. Tomorrow I’ll get my video up, but in the meantime why don’t all of you take the time to list a few things that made your day better? It makes a difference in the way you feel about your day. Focus on those moments. It’s kind of a nice change. Tomorrow we can all go back to lamenting having to roll out of bed.

Here’s the third and final of the holiday gift guides. A few more ideas found their way into the newsletter. Next week I’ll be focusing on budget friendly stocking stuffer gifts. And follow along on Twitter for more gift ideas www.twitter.com/budgetsmartgirl Ideas are still arriving in my e-mail on a daily basis!

Not Just a Fine Romance
Hear the word Harlequin and romance novels spring to mind. However, Harlequin recently began a non-fiction venture. With the exception of one book which is $29.95, they’re all under $25. Some of my favorite picks are The Total Brain Workout $16.95 and Eat Your Way to Happiness $16.95. Go to www.eharlequin.com and all the titles are 20% off.

More Brainy Stuff

Speaking of a total brain workout, there’s a Nintendo import that’s got everyone in the UK talking. It’s Junior Brain Trainer and arriving in North America this week. The game is geared for 5-11 year olds, and has occupied a high position on the Nintendo DS Budget bestseller chart since its release in the UK 11 months ago. $19.99 http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=76054

Salt of Life
We’re all under stress these days and not just at the Holidays. The Salt of Life will really be appreciated by its recipient.
http://www.nucelle.com/salt_of_life.htm?ref=budgetsmartgirl

Candles for the Holidays and a Good Cause
Firehouse Candles is a family-run business, located in Gurnee, Illinois. They manufacture and sell paraffin and soy candles as well as reed diffusers. They have some great Christmas scents that include: a seasonal autumn fragrance, a Christmas tree scent, cranberry, jingleberry, evergreen, apple jack, and brown sugar spice. The candles range in price from $3.99 for a 6-cube (each cube burns for 20 hours) brick to $14.99 for 16 oz paraffin jar that burn for 120 hours. Firehouse Candles has recently joined the fight against childhood cancer and is donating 25% of purchases to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. When purchasing a candle, you can enter the word “Bald” on the checkout page and they will donate a portion back to St. Baldrick’s. Not only do these candles smell great, burn great, but they are also supporting an amazing cause!

http://stbaldricks.org/shop/givebackstore/
http://www.firehousecandles.com/

Eco Travel Kit
Does someone on your list travel all the time? I bet they’re like this next gift.
Minimus.biz http://www.minimus.biz is the leader in all things travel-sized and individual sized. Launched on Dec. 1st, is a unique “green” kit that is a terrific gift for the avid traveler, or as part of a holiday getaway trip. Packaged in an environmentally friendly seed-infused paper box, you can actually plant the gift box in the ground and numerous flowers will grow. Inside the gift set are a variety of organic and all-natural personal care items including lotion, shower gel, soap, sunscreen, stress soothing balm, and lip balm, all from a variety of brands that are leaders in eco-friendly personal care products.

Hold Those Bags
Know someone who has too many purses and bags or a cluttered closet? They might like this one.
The Handy Hold All aka closet organizer for your handbags. As well as keeping them organized, they’re probably last longer too, how budget smart is that? www.simplysarahshaw.com

More Jewelry

I had lots of jewelry designers contact me with gift ideas and it was really difficult to select just one for each guide. This time is Sophie Grace of Hawaii.
The necklace is strung on a silk cord, making it very strong but more reasonably priced since there isn’t a gold or silver chain. The starfish is Swarovski Crystal and they each have different semi-precious stones depending on the color combo. They come in Gold, Purple, Green and Blue They sell like hot cakes for $50.00 but if you enter the code Maggie35 at checkout, you can buy them for $35 www.sophiegracemaui.com

For the Difficult Person on the List
We all know them, the person who is impossible to buy for. This next gift idea could be perfect.
Smartbox – http://www.smartbox.com/us/ Smartbox is a new gift card product that allows you to offer family members a great experience like a relaxing treatment at a luxurious spa, a stay at a great bed & breakfast, or even a trip to a world-famous stunt school – all at a budget friendly price (starting at $49). You can purchase Smartbox products online or at retailers like Borders and Duane Reade.

Clothes

When I was younger and people asked me what I wanted for Christmas, clothes always topped my list. They’re a lot more expensive these days but bargains still exist.

Conversation Pieces has something for everyone from gem stone dresses for the glam girl to feathered accessories for the whimsical woman and vintage envelope clutches for the edgy retro.
They sell on-trend indie designers made in the U.S.A. with everything under a $100. All of the pieces are limited quantity, www.shopconversationpieces.com.

And Finally
My love of trendy clothes might be a thing of the past, but I still love body lotions, bath soaks, so this caught my eye, a new line of petite bath bombs in a jar. “Bath Bombs” are hand-made in one of my favorite cities, Portland, Oregon with the absolute finest ingredients from all over the world. The website is www.beaubain.com, which also has links to numerous product reviews. The products are all paraben, sulfate free and not tested on animals.

West Elm Holiday Plates With the holidays come holiday entertaining. You can’t very well ente

West Elm Holiday Plates

With the holidays come holiday entertaining. You can’t very well entertain for the holidays without decorating for them, can you? The question is, how far do you go? It’s not as easy in an apartment as it is in a house. Besides a tree, a simple option is some scented holiday candles, dishes & maybe some lights/tasteful garland (yes, there can be such a thing!). Personally, I would love to fully decorate my apartment for the holidays but where would I store everything for the other 11 months?

DINING: West Elm (love them) has some less-offensive place-setting options.

Crate & Barrel holiday dining ideas

Their holiday plates, for example (above) convey a holiday feel without screaming “tacky!” Crate & Barrel also has some great holiday dining ideas (at right). It’s decorating without going overboard.

LIVING ROOM: Candles are an easy and (often) fairly inexpensive way to decorate. Holiday scents can of course invoke ideas of the holidays even if the candle doesn’t look outwardly holiday-themed. How about stockings? Do households without kids still hang stockings? Restoration Hardware has some great additions, such as decorative garland pieces for above fireplaces, doorways and windowsills (see below)

TIPS:

Try to keep a general “theme” so your decorating looks consistent

Don’t go overboard! Holiday decorating should be inviting & warm, not tacky & random

Make sure you have storage space. It seems like a great idea to buy all new linens, place settings and flatware for the holidays, but where will you put it all come January?

Many Web sites have “inspiration” sections where ideas for rooms/areas of your home are displayed fully accessorized. It’s often helpful to take a look at their ideas & make it your own.

Money-Saving Tip: Less expensive stores such as Target often have similar items as the more expensive department stores, but the department stores often have more thorough “inspiration” pages. Take a look at the department stores for inspiration, then try to find less expensive items at a lower cost.

Restoration Hardware Holiday Decor

GOING GREEN: There has been a push this year for artificial trees under the claim they’re better for the environment. Think about it: on one hand, you’re sparing a living tree from being cut down, but on the other hand, the process to make the plastic tree most likely isn’t completely eco-friendly, either. Whether this is a push from the artificial tree manufacturers or environmentalists, I don’t know.

Question (especially for you fellow apartment-dwellers who don’t necessarily spend Christmas in your apartment): What do you think? Real tree? Artificial? None?

its beginning to look a lot like christmas here at the penny house!! we are especially excited for the christmas season this year as cailyn is old enough to understand what is going on! we are so excited to start our traditions as a family, and shaun & i are really hoping to have fun with all of the traditions, but more importantly to focus and teach her the true meaning of christmas. it is so easy to get caught up in all the other stuff that comes along with the holidays, so we are really trying to be intentional about how we spend our time this next month! here are a few things we have done so far!
growing up, my parents let us have a “kids” tree.. so we started that with cailyn this year! she has a little tree in her room. we went over the weekend to pick out ornaments, and i really thought she would go for the bright pink and teal stuff… but she picked out the traditional red and white ornaments! it is really cute; and i have some fun ideas of ornaments we are going to try to make over the next month to fill up her tree even more! here are a few pics we took when aunt see stopped by to see cailyn’s tree {and get her asher fix}

my brother, sister, and i’s favorite tradition growing up was what my parents called “santa’s secret”. it is an advent calendar, where each day we would pull out a piece of paper that had some sort of fun activity that we would do together as a family for that day! i remember, we would all RACE to the calendar each morning and fight over who got to read what was planned for the day! we still talk about those memories! we started this with cailyn this morning. last christmas, my mom gave us a little advent calendar to start our own! here is cailyn, pulling it out “the secret”! tonight, we were supposed to go walk around and look at the lights at central park… but unfortunately, it was raining, so we just drove through it! cailyn’s mouth was still wide open the whole time! she loved it!

and lastly, i know it always seems like shaun & i have a new business venture.. but here is our latest! i teamed up with my step sisters, heather and kellye, and we are helping to promote and sell our good friend, Natalie, new line of candles. they are called Mountain Mama’s Candles. . . and they are super cute! Natalie is so very creative and talented; she has done a great job with the design of her product! we are concentrating on getting the candles in to groups and clubs for fundraising, but we have also set up a booth in post oak mall to sell the candles before the holidays. you should def check the candles out! AND, a special treat, … enter the code COLLEGE and get 25% off your entire order!! if you are in college station and at post oak mall, you should def check out our booth between aggieland outfitters and victoria secret! natalie has a super cute christmas line that makes the perfect little gift!!

Do you keep the same holiday decor every year, or do you switch it up a bit?

I know that it can be pricy to change decorations from year to year, but I do like mixing it up … maybe because there are so many fun things to try. Red with lime green – metallics – magenta and white – bright colors like the old-school Christmas bulbs – so many fun things. But one style I have never quite gotten into was the snowflake – until now!

Maybe because in sunny CA the snowflake seemed downright silly, or maybe because they always looked a bit cheesy – you know the ones on the blue and white paper plates? But I think I am officially a convert.

The snowflakes on the Saks building inspired me, and I just couldn’t stop.

I found all kinds of great things for a winter wonderland in silver, pewter, grey, white, and cream.

There are lots of lovely ornaments that can be found at great prices, but you don’t have to stop at the tree. Gather bulbs in bowls, vases, apothecary jars, you name it!

For a bit of nostalgia, make the popsicle stick ornaments with silver glitter (or ask Mom for your old ones, I am sure she still has them).

What is great about these more muted colors, is they don’t have to be put away on the 26th. These things will still look great in January, even February. And the pillows, blankets, vases and jars can be out year ’round!

And these shapes and colors translate to a great table too…

Laser cut felt placemats really look like snowflakes, but you can make your own too! Just buy heavy felt from the fabric store and cut out patterns. Or even just cut bulk felt down to the ‘regular’ rectangle shape and these placemats will add a layer of warmth to the table during the cooler months.

For candles, smoky grey votives are a fun change, and these candlesticks would be the perfect addition. You can also buy tapers in grey for a updated take on the basic white.

Another great DIY project is to dye old doilies (thanks Eddie for the idea!!) – such a great transformation. They can be used all over – on tables, on mantles, on pedestals…

Some grey napkins, pewter goblets and a few other accents and it’s all set – literally.

More holiday ideas in store all month, but in the meantime, what are your favorite holiday colors?

–
