Last week I watched a documentary, on CBC’s The Fifth Estate, on one Sam Brown, a thrill seeking, award-winning, mountain-biker from Nelson BC, who found the greatest thrill was hauling hockey bags full of pot across the border to the US.

Sam didn’t fancy himself a drug dealer and would be offended at the suggestion. In his mind, he was just having fun. The more dangerous the mission the better. He revelled in pushing the limits and fancied himself as quite the tactician. And as time went on, the rewards got bigger.

Sam surrounded himself with fancy bikes, fancy sleds and fancy girls.

But the risks got bigger too. Soon enough, Sam was not only dropping off pot, but hauling back coke on the return trip, hundreds of kilos worth.

Even his Dad figured something was up when Sam came home one night with a helicopter for his Dad to fix. You’d think Dad would say something like, ‘What the hell are you doing with a helicopter. Are you out of your frickin’ mind. Do you know what the American’s will with you if they catch you? But instead his attitude was, ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’. “I’d rather aid and abet my son’s illegal activity, than watch him crash because of faulty equipment”.

As it happens, one of Sam’s associates found herself with faulty equipment caught in the wrong place at the wrong time by the Feds and doing time, awaiting trial in the US. With the heat on, Sam starts wondering whether maybe he should quit while he’s ahead. Plan B was to cash out and maybe find something a little more mainstream. But, of course, there would have to be one last run to raise money for his associates’ legal fees.

As it happens, the DEA was on his tail too… and on that fateful night, with darkness falling and wind and snow closing in on him, he flew right into the web that his captors had set for him. Long story short, when they stuck this young man in the local jail, his characteristic bravado nowhere to be found, he hung himself with a bed-sheet.

Lyndon Mackintyre who I have always found to be an excellent journalist ends the piece with a sob-story about how this is his handler’s fault, the American’s fault, the drug culture’s fault, his parent’s fault. Everyone is to blame, except Sam. I nearly threw up.

But then I though, maybe I’m being a little too judgmental. So, I’m exploring the topic today in QuestForFire because it brings up a number of issues that I think are at the heart of our societies current ambivalence towards addicts and addiction.

My sense is that people are drawn towards one side or the other based on their inherent capacity for empathy.

On the one side, those who do not fell for Sam, see him as the master of his own fate and as awful as it may seem, shed no tears for the daredevil drug dealer. This is the side to which, I must say, I gravitate to, at least initially. It’s not so much that I have no empathy for him, but rather that I have more empathy for the drug users who end up homeless, psychotic or in a ditch somewhere, as a result of the crack, that Sam was able to supply them with. As an addiction specialist, I am only too familiar with the shattered lives that drugs (and alcohol) leave in their wake.

On the other side, are people who feel sorry for Sam and his family. They see Sam the victim, the young man with poor judgement. “Everybody makes mistakes”, they say.

Sure, everybody makes mistakes. But this was not an act of impulse. This was a repeated and persistent pattern of willful anti-social behaviour.  Sam was happy to enjoy the fruits of his labour and even took umbrage at being labelled a trafficker. But that’s what he did without any thought of the consequences to himself or to others.

Some have said, he was just looking out for number one. And if he didn’t deliver those drugs, well someone else would. And that’s true. But it doesn’t change the fact that it was wrong, and he knew it.

But there is another way of looking at it… that was not raised in that very long list of viewer feedback on the CBC website. Sam Brown was a daredevil, a thrill seeker, an adrenaline junkie. He had to to push the limits, because doing what everyone else does, the way everyone else does it, is just too boring. I know the type. I work with them every day. As an addictionologist, understanding this, is my stock in trade. Maybe Sam Brown was just a different kind of addict.

There is quite a bit of science that says that Sam Brown was likely suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. He has all the hallmarks: He was smart, but did not do well in school. He was hyperactive, never could sit still. And he was impulsive, to the nth degree. About 50% of ADDers suffer from one or more addictions (if you include nicotine) and probably higher if you include behavioural addictions such as compulsive shopping, gambling, gaming, sex and eating.

Addiction and ADHD have a lot in common. They are both associated with dysfunctional dopamine circuits. (read more about it on my web-site, northshoreadhd.com. I won’t go into anymore detail on that, but suffice it to say, both addicts and ADDers have chemical imbalances that lead them to be easily bored, to be unlikely to learn from their mistakes, and to have difficulty saying, “no” to temptation. And that leads them to make exceptionally bad choices, and to have the kind of poor judgement that can kill you.

So, I guess, if I think about it, maybe I can find some empathy in my heart for Sam Brown. I certainly feel for those who lost a friend or a family-member.

As a physician, I find myself wondering, “what if”. What if someone had seen the ADHD pattern and directed him to some treatment. Or what if he had been able to stick to a less dysfunctional addiction such as extreme mountainbiking.It would have been nice to have been able to help this young man before he felt so desperate that he ended up taking his own life. I now if he were my patient, I would be able to look past his poor judgement and focus on the future. As long as he was willing to take some ownership of his actions. Let he/she who has not made mistakes cast the first stone.

Los adictos deben pasar de ser compradores en el mercado ilegal a pacientes del sistema público de salud

Los recursos liberados al dejar de perseguir el consumo se deben emplear contra el crimen organizado

César Gaviria, expresidente de Colombia y dos veces secretario general de la Organización de Estados Americanos, tiene autoridad para hablar sobre narcotráfico. Durante su mandato, la Policía colombiana desarticuló el Cartel de Medellín y puso fin a los expedientes delictivos de Pablo Escobar, Gonzalo Rodríguez Gacha y otros traficantes de talla internacional.

Gaviria asoció su prestigio al de otros dos respetados expresidentes latinoamericanos –Fernando Henrique Cardoso, de Brasil, y Ernesto Zedillo, de México– para encabezar al grupo de expertos integrantes de la Comisión Latinoamericana sobre Drogas y Democracia, dedicada a estudiar el problema y replantear sus soluciones.

Gaviria no lamenta la firmeza de sus actuaciones frente a los carteles colombianos ni sugiere abandonar la lucha frontal contra el flagelo de las drogas, pero asegura que esa estrategia, por sí misma, será derrotada. Con sus colegas de comisión, sostiene la necesidad de despenalizar el consumo y tratarlo como un problema de salud pública.

El planteamiento arrebataría a los narcotraficantes su mercado cautivo de adictos, disminuiría las ganancias derivadas del trasiego ilícito, descongestionaría las cárceles abarrotadas de consumidores relativamente inofensivos y aumentaría las posibilidades de ofrecer tratamiento a quienes procuren abandonar el vicio.

Enviar a los consumidores a la cárcel, como se hace con todo rigor en los Estados Unidos y otras naciones del continente, es causarles un daño adicional –dice Gaviria–, sobre todo en el caso de quienes terminan tras las rejas por portar pequeñas cantidades de marihuana, una droga cuyos efectos no son peores que los del alcohol y el tabaco, por lo cual la Comisión plantea la posibilidad de despenalizar la posesión para el consumo personal.

La idea es, en palabras de la Comisión, cambiar el estatus de los adictos para que pasen de compradores en el mercado ilegal a pacientes del sistema público de salud. Ese cambio de estatus, combinado con campañas educativas eficaces, podría reducir la demanda de drogas ilegales, bajarles el precio y así minar las bases económicas del tráfico ilícito.

La Comisión reconoce el fracaso de muchas campañas informativas ensayadas en el mundo, pero apunta a experiencias exitosas en el Reino Unido, Holanda y Suiza. También señala los éxitos obtenidos por la publicidad contra el tabaco. Mensajes basados en la experiencia de quienes fueron adictos, prueba concreta de los riesgos involucrados, podrían ser más eficaces que la amenaza de represión y las exhortaciones afincadas en la virtud.

Los esfuerzos de erradicación de cultivos, dice el planteamiento, deben aparejarse con bien financiados programas de siembras alternativas, adaptados a la realidad local en términos de viabilidad y acceso competitivo a los mercados, pero también es necesario explorar otras opciones de trabajo y desarrollo social.

Dicho lo anterior, la Comisión recomienda redirigir los recursos represivos liberados al dejar de perseguir el consumo y dedicarlos a una lucha sin cuartel contra el crimen organizado, porque la violencia, la corrupción institucional, el lavado de divisas, el trasiego de armas y el control ejercido por el narcotráfico sobre poblaciones y territorios son sus más dañinos efectos sociales.

La estrategia de despenalizar el consumo para tratarlo como problema de salud pública merece consideración, pero el principal obstáculo es el compromiso de los Estados Unidos con la tesis de la prohibición. En el 2007, autoridades estatales y locales de ese país hicieron 1.841.200 arrestos por violación de las leyes antinarcóticos, de los cuales más de cuatro quintas partes fueron por simple posesión y casi la mitad involucró la marihuana.

Los detenidos ocupan a la Policía, abarrotan el sistema judicial y, eventualmente, de acuerdo con las leyes de cada estado, engrosan la abultada población penal estadounidense, que es precisamente la mayor del mundo, en buena parte debido a las condenas por simple posesión de drogas.

A pesar de todo eso y del fracaso de la actual estrategia, el tema de la despenalización es un tabú de la política norteamericana, que tampoco se detiene a considerar los desastrosos efectos del narcotráfico en México, Colombia y otros países del área.

Nada de eso impide que Costa Rica se plantee el debate sobre la despenalización, al menos para fijar posición en los foros internacionales donde Estados Unidos promueve el prohibicionismo y América Latina comienza a exigir la contemplación de alternativas.

El nuestro no es un país especialmente represivo del consumo, y la Ley de Psicotrópicos prevé medidas de seguridad destinadas exclusivamente a rehabilitar al adicto, pero de ahí a una política integral como la planteada por la Comisión Latinoamericana hay un largo trecho.

Then comes the despair that is hard to shake off. It is also hard to account for. Why does the mere thought of these cannabis crusaders fill me with such gloom for the future? Like many if not most Americans I don’t mind others resorting to such relief and comfort as they can get from marijuana so long as they are discreet in their habits. Thus it is by no means the drug nor the habit of the drug that concerns and depresses me. Rather it seems to be the Weltanshauung of normalization and legalization that threatens my optimism for the future. What sort of people, what sort of nation, what sort of culture thinks the way the cannabis crusaders think? Next comes the worry that chronic hemp smoking could be responsible for the intellectual and moral passivity of much modern Leftism. Visions of stoned armchair philosophers, students, teachers and even political leaders come to mind. The effeminacy of politicians like Barack Obama and liberals-Leftists in general could have a pharmacological basis in chronic substance abuse. The political pharmacology of the West has hitherto been purely alcoholic in every sense of the term. A nation of potheads is unlikely to spawn heroes or to achieve anything great. For such enterprises Dutch Courage has always been needed.

Medscape (http://tinyurl.com/marijuana-and-early-psychosis 11/18) reported that, according to a study published in the Nov. issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry, “daily use of cannabis or tobacco has been linked to an earlier age of onset of prodromal and psychotic symptoms.” In a study of “109 patients (24% women) aged 18 to 40 years” who “were experiencing a first episode of psychotic symptoms,” Emory University School of Medicine researchers “classified patients according to their frequency of cannabis, alcohol, and tobacco use…before the onset of prodromal and psychotic symptoms.” After examining “changes in substance use over time,” the team discovered “significant effects of progression to both daily cannabis use and daily tobacco use on the risk for onset of psychosis,” with “a greater effect in” females.

La prohibición de las drogas ha tenido consecuencias desastrosas muy similares a la que sufrió el alcohol en los años veinte en Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, en vez de reconocer el fracaso de dicha política, la mayoría de los gobiernos alrededor del mundo se han empeñado en gastar más recursos y atentar más contra las libertades de sus ciudadanos en un esfuerzo inútil por detener el comercio ilegal de narcóticos. Legalizar las drogas eliminaría o mitigaría significativamente las terribles consecuencias que enfrentamos bajo el actual enfoque prohibicionista:

1. La legalización pondría fin a la parte exageradamente lucrativa del negocio del narcotráfico, al traer a la superficie el mercado negro existente. Y con la desaparición de la clandestinidad del narcotráfico disminuye dramáticamente la problemática social ligada a dicha actividad. La actual prohibición de las drogas no detiene al mercado, simplemente lo ha sumergido bajo el manto de la ilegalidad, y cuando un negocio es un crimen, los criminales tomarán parte de éste. Según las Naciones Unidas, el tráfico de drogas genera $400.000 millones anuales, lo cual representa un 8% del comercio mundial, comparable con la industria de textiles. Dicho botín representa una tentación irresistible para los criminales del mundo.
2. La legalización reduciría dramáticamente el precio de las drogas, al acabar con los altísimos costos de producción e intermediación que implica la prohibición. Esto significa que mucha gente que posee adicción a estas sustancias no tendrá que robar o prostituirse con el fin de costear el actual precio inflado de dichas substancias.
3. Legalizar las drogas haría que la fabricación de dichas sustancias se encuentre dentro del alcance de las regulaciones propias de un mercado legal. Bajo la prohibición, no existen controles de calidad ni venta de dosis estandarizadas. Esto ha conducido a niveles de mortalidad altos a causa de sobredosis o envenenamiento por el consumo de drogas. De hecho, según un estudio del Cato Institute realizado por James Ostrowski, el 80% de las muertes relacionadas con drogas se deben a la falta de acceso a dosis estandarizadas.
4. El narcotráfico ha extendido sus tentáculos en la vida política de los países. Importantes figuras políticas a lo largo de Latinoamérica han sido ligadas con personalidades y dineros relacionados con el tráfico de drogas. Tal vez aquí yace la razón por la cual la guerra contra las drogas se intensifica año con año. Los grandes narcotraficantes son los que más se benefician con la actual prohibición, y los operativos anti-drogas que se practican en Latinoamérica sirven para eliminarles la competencia que enfrentan por parte de los pequeños y medianos distribuidores. La legalización acabaría con esta nefasta alianza del narcotráfico y el poder político.
5. Legalizar las drogas acabaría con un foco importante de corrupción, la cual aumenta en todos los niveles del gobierno debido a que una substancial cantidad de policías, oficiales de aduana, jueces y toda clase de autoridades han sido comprados, sobornados o extorsionados por narcotraficantes, creando un gran ambiente de desconfianza por parte de la población hacia el sector público en general.
6. Los gobiernos dejarían de malgastar miles de millones de dólares en el combate de las drogas, recursos que serían destinados a combatir a los verdaderos criminales: los que le violan los derechos a los demás (asesinos, estafadores, violadores, ladrones, grupos terroristas). Además, con la legalización se descongestionaría las cárceles, las cuales hoy en día se ven inundadas por gente cuyo único crimen fue el consumo de substancias que están prohibidas por la ley. Todos estos esfuerzos por combatir el tráfico de drogas han sido inútiles. Por ejemplo, las mismas autoridades reconocen que a pesar de todo el dinero gastado, los esfuerzos actuales solo interceptan el 13% de los embarques de heroína y un máximo del 28% de los de cocaína. De acuerdo con las Naciones Unidas, las ganancias de las drogas ilegales están tan infladas que tres cuartos de todos los embarques deberían ser interceptados con el fin de reducir de manera significativa lo lucrativo del negocio.
7. Con la legalización se acaba el pretexto del Estado de socavar nuestras libertades con el fin de llevar a cabo esta guerra contra las drogas. Intervenciones telefónicas, allanamientos, registro de expedientes, censura y control de armas son actos que atentan contra nuestra libertad y autonomía como individuos. Si hoy en día las drogas son accesibles incluso en las áreas de máxima seguridad de las prisiones, ni siquiera convirtiendo a nuestros países en cárceles vamos a lograr mantener a las drogas fuera del alcance de aquellos que quieran consumirlas. Legalizando estas substancias evitaremos que los gobiernos conviertan a nuestros países en prisiones de facto.
8. Legalizar las drogas desactivará la bomba de tiempo en la que se ha convertido Latinoamérica, especialmente países como Ecuador, Bolivia y Colombia. En este último, las guerrillas financiadas por el narcotráfico manejan miles de millones de dólares en equipos militares de primera línea, y amenazan con extender su lucha a países como Panamá, Brasil y Venezuela. Hace un par de años se descubrió la fabricación de un submarino en Colombia para el transporte de armamentos y drogas, lo que demuestra el poderío de estos grupos guerrilleros. Todo esto ha llevado a una intervención creciente por parte de Estados Unidos, quienes desde hace un par de años han venido fortaleciendo su presencia militar en la región de una manera nunca vista desde el fin de la Guerra Fría.
9. En una sociedad en donde las drogas son legales, el número de víctimas inocentes producto del consumo y la venta de estupefacientes se vería reducido substancialmente. La actual política afecta directamente tanto a los consumidores de narcóticos como a terceros. Es así como gran cantidad de personas que nunca han consumido estas sustancias o que no están relacionadas con la actividad se ven perjudicadas o incluso pierden la vida debido a las “externalidades” de la guerra contra las drogas: violencia urbana, abusos policiales, confiscación de propiedades, allanamientos equivocados, entre muchos otros.
10. La legalización conducirá a que la sociedad aprenda a convivir con las drogas, tal y como lo ha hecho con otras sustancias como el alcohol y el tabaco. El proceso de aprendizaje social es sumamente valioso para poder disminuir e internalizar los efectos negativos que se derivan del consumo y abuso de ciertas sustancias. Sin embargo, políticas como las de la prohibición, al convertir a los consumidores en criminales, desincentivan la aparición de comportamientos y actitudes sociales necesarios para poder lidiar con los problemas de la adicción y el consumo tempranero de dichas sustancias.

Luego de muchos años de malas experiencias con la política actual, y tras un análisis detallado de las consecuencias no deseadas de prohibir el consumo y la venta de substancias que la gente quiere, es necesario que lleguemos a la conclusión de que las drogas deben ser legalizadas si no queremos seguir el camino autodestructivo al que nos está conduciendo la prohibición moderna.

November 21, 2009 – Chemicals found in cannabis leaves can be used to stop prostate cancer cells. The researchers hope that cannabis leaves can be used as a remedy for the treatment of prostate cancer.

After focusing on the network on human cancer cells,Ines Diaz-Laviada and colleagues from the University of Alcala in Madrid, also investigated the effects of the chemicals on canabis leaves on mice and the fact that the substance is capable to reduce the cancer growth significantly.

The study is published in the British Journal of Cancer. Now in the world of research, there have been many studies that examine the medical uses of cannabinoids, the chemical substance found in cannabis.

This experts focused on the research done over the years devoted to seeking the best care in dealing with cancer in humans.

“This is an interesting study that opens the way to develop a potential drug. But this is only new in the early stages, “said Lesley Walker, Director of Cancer Information, Cancer Research UK, England.

She also explained that this does not mean that the men who use cannabis can automatically avoid prostate cancer.

The cannabinoids substances are investigated by the Spanish team which is requested to conduct the research in the fight against prostate cancer. This substance can block the receptors, the entrance of molecules, which is on the tumor cell surface. It is able to stop tumor cells to break away and growing.

Assim, o tribunal da UE confirma a sentença que já tinha sido ditada pelo escritório de marcas comunitário (OAMI) diante do recurso apresentado por um empresário italiano, denunciado por vender bebidas alcoólicas com o nome “cannabis”.

O empresário defendia poder continuar vendendo suas bebidas com este nome, porque “cannabis” está presente no mercado italiano como marca desde 1996 e, desde 1999, adquiriu notoriedade como marca comunitária de vinhos, cervejas e bebidas alcoólicas”.

Boom.  Am sa trec repede peste faptul ca eu la 13 ani aveam o repulsie ingrozitoare fata de tutun si alcool, o sa presupun ca eram eu ciudat si nu prea aveam treaba cu realitatea.  Nu o sa aberez nici despre cum un mucos fara floci a reusit sa puna mana pe asa ceva, nu-i obligatoriu sa-i fi vandut cineva lui direct, oricine poate cumpara orice de la smart shop, mai departe, nu-i problema vanzatorului ce se intampla cu marfa vanduta, se respecta acelasi principiu de “utilizare responsabila” ce se respecta cand vorbim si despre vanzarea alcoolului, medicamentelor, a armelor si a masinilor, un pusti de 13 ani putea sa-si (sau sa ne) faca rau cu oricare din acestea.

Drept urmare nu conteaza cum a avut pustiu acces la fumabile, conteaza faptul ca acesti copiii au astfel de activitati. Nu spun ca-i rau sa fumezi un cui, bag in mine aproape orice si as fi ipocrit daca as spune ca am dubii asupra moralitatii actiunilor mele. Doar ca eu, si sper ca si voi, suntem oarecum informati, stim ce si cum se intampla si, indiferent de stilul de viata pe care il alegem macar pastram aparenta integrarii in societate: muncim, participam activ la mersul lucrurilor si ne exprimam nemultumirile fata de sistem doar prin infatisare si mentalitate, nu prin distrugeri, furturi sau alte activitati antisociale. Problema este ca noi facem asta pentru ca avem maturitatea necesara de a ne da seama de utilitatea acestor “masti”, iar maturitatea, cu exceptiile de rigoare, este strans legata de varsta. Un pusti de 13 ani nu poate lua deciziile corecte pentru ca nu poate analiza corect informatiile din jur, de aici apar complicatiile: dependenta, vanzarea chestiilor din casa, certuri, si eventual, daca nu-l potoleste nimeni, o duma atat de imbecila ce, daca nu-l omoara, sigur il fute pe viata.

Cand vine vorba de droguri toata lumea tipa “copiii copiii”, nu drogurile sunt problema ci mediul in care acei copii traiesc. Totul tine de educatie, prohibitia este doar o unealta ce are ca scop pedepsirea celor ce nu si-au invatat lectiile. De educatie trebuie sa se ocupe toata lumea, de la familie pana la scoli si mai ales jucatorii din Mass Media. Mai ales de catre Mass Media, ei au puterea de a schimba lucrurile, pacat ca nu o folosesc:

Cat a baut pustiulica ? De ce toata lumea zbiara cand se intampla ceva naspa dar nimeni nu previne ? Prohibitia nu rezolva nimic, trebuie incurajat consumul responsabil, daca tot se fumeaza, daca tot se consuma, daca tot se intampla rahaturi de gen… macar sa ni se spuna de ce. Ele in sine, ca droguri, au efecte interesante, nu se compara cu maria, dar nici nu-s de aruncat.

En sekvens ur SVT´s  barnprogram “Historien om Sverige” visar Carl von Linné omgiven av cannabisplantor rökandes en joint tillsammans med bl.a Bob Marley . Programmet ska vara riktat till äldre barn, jag förmodar kanske 10-11 åringar, för jag har svårt att tro tt 15-16 åringar tittar på sånt där. Så vad är det då manusförfattaren och SVT vill förmedla till barnen med detta kan man ju undra?  Sveriges historia eller vill man göra humor som man tror att ungarna ändå inte begriper?

Programchefen Kristina Colliander säger:  “Man kan tolka det som ett humorgrepp. Det är en väldigt spetsad humorserie för äldre barn med en flört till den vuxna publiken.” Det är ett barnprogram så varför lägga in den typen av vuxen (?) humor där? Kan inte ungar bara få vara ungar utan att hela tiden matas med en massa skit? Nu vet jag att det finns en massa människor som anser att Cannabis är himla bra på många sätt , men oavsett så finns det väl ingen som anser att ungar ska matas med propaganda för det ?

Huruvida Linné rökte på en och annan gång har jag ingen aning om, det är väl kanske inte omöjligt eftersom det var han som namngav och sammanställde en hel del av de berusande växter som finns och det kanske är sannolikt att han själv provade sig fram, men jag ser ändå inte vitsen med att illustrera det som SVT gjort, jag förmodar att det var bara en mycket liten del av allt Linné gjorde så man undrar ju om detta ses som det viktigaste att lära barn/unga om vem Linné var?

Ja jag vet inte, jag har sjuk humor och jag skulle säkert skratta lite åt det här om det var riktat till vuxna, men skrattet fastnar liksom nånstans i halsen när det riktas till barn. För att det ska vara humor så måste man förstå humor, ironi och tanken bakom. Frågan är om barnen/ungdomarna som tittar gör det, eller är meningen att vi vuxna ska sitta och fnissa bakom ryggen på ungarna och liksom tycka att det är fiffigt att dom fått till det så där bra? “Åh kolla , Linné röker på och ungen fattar ingenting“. Jag ser inte poängen alls om jag ska vara ärlig……

Ps. Diskussionen om huruvida Cannabis är bra vid vissa sjukdomstillstånd och annat kan vi ta nån annanstans, det är ingenting ungar behöver bekymra sig om i alla fall så det är en helt annan diskussion.

Withdrawal symptoms from benzos are truly in a league of their own. Unfortunately, here in UK a 6 week detox is the norm, which may be long enough for alcohol, crack and heroin users but not for benzos.  Benzos play with the mind in a way that other substances do not and a 6 week detox is too fast. The brain goes into shock and GABA receptors shut down causing a  protracted withdrawal that, then lasts for years.

The Ashton taper method involves first switching the user from shorter acting benzos, such as Ativan, Xanax or Temazepam et.al. to an equivalent dose of Diazepam. The client then reduces at a rate of no more than 1mg per week. As it is impractical for users to spend the necessary amount of time as an in-patient successful benzo withdrawals must be performed at home. I went into an abstinance-based rehabilitation centre a year ago and was reduced much too quickly. Admittedly my habit was ridiculous and the place undoubtedly saved my life, but I was suffering so badly that 6mths down the line I was forced to pick up another diazepam script to stop me going completely mad! I arrived with a 400mg a day diazepam and 12omg a day methadone habit. The heroin, crack and cannabis I was using on top of this were irrelevent.

I was reduced immediately to 20mg diazepam, codeine phosphate(DF118s) and a small dose of Chlopromazine. Unsurprisingly I had a seizure but over the following couple of months I was reduced to 5mg and then none. Although I could handle the physical withdrawals, just, my head was pickled.

I was then put on a course of Buspar to help control my anxiety, amitriptyline for depression and 1 Zopiclone at night to help me sleep.  I struggled on, pretty much oblivious to the rest of the program and after 3mths I was completely clean and moved onto the Secondary stage. Mentally, I was feeling worse and worse so went to see a local GP who put me first on Citalapram, which increased my anxiety and mania. A different GP believing I may be suffering from manic depression refered me for secondary mental healthcare and gave me a strip of the anti-psychotic Respiridone. Apparently, the symptoms of acute benzo withdrawal are often mistaken for bi-polar disorder.

Anyway, the mental health team decided I didn’t need their support and I was again prescribed amitriptyline. After 6mths my funding was finished and I still felt as bad as ever. I moved out of rehab and into my own room, but soon became completely overwhelmed. I was convinced I had caused myself irreperable brain damage and in utter desperationfell back onto the only coping mechanism I knew. I ordered 1000 diazepam over the internet and felt better immediately.

By now I had discovered a couple of benzo support forums online who explained that I was experiencing protracted benzo withdrawals that would last several years. If I had reduced according to the Ashton taper method I would still be withdrawing, but much less intensely. Forum members with personal experience advised me to obtain another diazepam script and to reduce at the rate of 1-2mg every 2 weeks. I am now down to 8mg a day and with the support of ACT I am finally getting there.

I have been through hell but blame only myself and want to make sure that nobody else suffers unnecessarily to the same extent as I did. It is very unlikely that anyone reading this will ever have to withdraw from 400mg of diazepam a day, but the same principles apply. Benzo users wishing to come off should stick to the Ashton taper plan and seek support from other ex-users or professionals with experience of working specifically in that field.
