Santa was good to you this year and you got a brand-new plasma TV for Christmas! Maintenance of any electronic device is smart, but keeping your new plasma TV clean is absolutely imperative – considering the expensive alternative of replacement.

Effectively maintained, you should expect to get 100,000 hours out of your LCD TV (or as long as the backlight lasts) and many manufacturers of plasma TVs claim a new half life of 100,000 hours + on their products. Asalco can help!

First of all, the most obvious and important thing to remember is electronic devices – any and ALL electronics – don’t go well with water! Avoid excessive humidity and drastic temperature changes; these can produce condensation, which, in turn, can really mess with your electronics. Keep that mug or glass of juice away from the TV – That is like begging for something bad to happen.

Allow your plasma TV to ‘breathe’: Plasma TVs produce a high amount of heat and this attracts dust. This combination of dust and heat can reduce its life expectancy: Be sure it has clearance around it for air to flow. If not specified in the manufacturer’s manual, a minimum of 8 inch (20 cm) is a good idea. Blow out the dust once a month or so with Asalco Duster (AE305 or AE305A).

A Clean Screen in 2 Simple Steps: A plasma TV screen is a very sensitive surface and can get damaged quite easily. Using the wrong cleaner or applicator can damage the anti-glare coating and/or scratch it. Asalco manufactures LCD and Plasma Cleaner. It is specially formulated to clean delicate LCD and plasma TV and computer screens. It is anti-static and is safe on non- glare coatings, LCD and Plasma Cleaner dries streak-free, and is non-flammable. It comes in a 177 ml pump spray bottle and is available from Asalco distributors across Canada. To locate an Asalco distributor near you, click here.

1) Turn off the screen or TV. Spray Asalco’s LCD and Plasma Cleaner on a micro fiber cloth or soft, clean cotton cloth and wipe. Note that you should not spray them directly on the screen but on the cloth. LCD and Plasma Cleaner is very effective against fingerprints and other smudges – which you should avoid having on your plasma TV screen: “Look and don’t touch” should be the #1 House Rule!

2) Be gentle. Don’t apply too much pressure on the screen. Even if you have stubborn dirty spots on the screen, it’s better to fold the cloth over, spray on more LCD and Plasma Cleaner and repeat this process until it is clean rather than get aggressive with the screen. Always be sure to use cleaners that are made specifically for plasma or LCD screens, and not regular glass cleaner. These can damage the finish as well as contribute to dust accumulation. Paper towels are another big no-no; they will scratch.

Plain old compressed air dusters have been used for years by for electronics pros for maintenance. I

Plain old compressed air dusters have been used for years by for electronics pros for maintenance. It is, after all, AIR_IN_A_CAN and made to blow dirt out off hard-to-get-at spots: A pretty straightforward and simple concept.

So why, oh, why doesn’t everyone get a can? And – do what with it, you may ask. Well, for starters, you can save loads of time with mundane tasks like dusting or cleaning all that crap that collects in the sliding tracks of your windows, for one: Try as you may, you can’t get into the corners, even with an old toothbrush or ever-popular butter-knife-and rag combo. You may get close to clean, but, alas, no cigar! But with a little blast of air duster, wipe-up what you’ve blown out -and Poof! You’re done!

Air Duster, Canned Air – whatever you call it; it is a great addition to your cleaning cupboard.
It saves loads of time when used in household cleaning tasks. It can almost certainly prolong the life of almost any electronic, electrical device or appliance, and this IS a big deal: Especially considering the cost of replacement of things nowadays.

A can of Duster works fantastic on lamps and light fixtures with lots of detailing; it blows out all the nooks and crannies in the dash of your car, too.

Get yourself a can of Asalco AE305 Duster. It’s a very economical product and works great. Asalco has distributors all across Canada. Asalco offers an extensive line of products that are specially formulated to clean and maintain delicate electronics. Use your imagination, and get a can: You’ll be amazed at what you can clean with it: Computers, Notebooks, Keyboards, Fax Machines, Copiers, Scanners, Desk Tops, Sewing Machines, Small kitchen appliances, Photo Equipment, Printers, Telephones, Cameras, Clocks, Knick-knacks, Window Screens, CD Players, TVs, VCR’s, DVD Players, Camcorders, Audio Equipment, Tape Drives, Video Games, Fans, Air-exchangers, Filters, Lab Equipment, Models, Jewellery, Auto Interiors and the list goes on!

About two weeks ago I got an email from Donna Berghorn saying that someone had sen

About two weeks ago I got an email from Donna Berghorn saying that someone had sent her a craigslist ad that me and a few other comm students might be interested in. The Discovery Channel was coming to the Colby-Sawyer Campus to film something for a new show and was looking for a production assistant. Two eleven-hour days (fri/sat) for $250 total. This caught my attention because the $125 is a slight increase over my current salary of $0/day (or minus-$25/day if you add my girlfriend into the mix).

With it being 10 minutes before class, I had a decision to make: go to class and convince myself that I would apply for it later and then not have it enter my mind for the rest of my life (which happens 2-3 times per-day), or skip class, quickly revamp the ole resume, and try to be one of the first applicants. Hmmm $0 and class, or an excuse to skip class and possibly make $250. Such a tough life I live.

Without saying, I chose the latter and sent it off twenty minutes later. At about 7:30 that night my phone rang with an incoming call from an 818 area code. Being completely unfamiliar with that number, I passed it off as someone from the bounty hunter service that has acquired my debt from a sophomore year Comcast payment that I never made. By the way, keep trying guys. I haven’t broke for two years, but I’m sure one day I will magically cave in for you. Anyway, I decided not to pick up the call.

To make a short story even shorter, it was this guy Jacob from True Entertainment (the company that the Discovery Channel outsources production to). I called back and he said I got the job, and that we would start bright and early that Friday. Realizing I had no idea what I was getting myself into, I asked:

“Hey, what show is it?” I asked.

“Wreckreation Nation,” he replied. “Were filming Ski Joring.”

Oh?

Enter: Google.

After some research I discovered that Wreckreation Nation is this cool new show that debut in January that goes around the country looking for strange and extreme activities. The host of the show is this guy— Dave Mordal—who was a runner up on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Next, I looked up Ski Joring. This deserves it’s own paragraph.

Ski Joring, for the casual (?) fan, is very much like waterskiing—only if you replace the water for snow, and the boat for a horse. Skiers are pulled behind a horse by a towrope, trying to complete the obstacle course (which includes three 4ft. jumps, a ring grabbing area, and 30+ cones) in as quickly as time as possible. (See Video Below)

So Friday rolls around and I am up, underdressed for the cold, and ready to go. I headed over to the Lamplighter Inn (yikes), where the crew was waiting. I’m not from L.A., but I gotta think that 1) coming to New London, NH in January is the last thing you want to do and 2) the Lamplighter Inn is the last place you want to stay. Terrific place to get murdered.

I arrived just after 7:30am and was met by a member of the crew, Amber, who gave me two $100 bills and a list of groceries to get for the crew. This list included:

                                    -Pringles

                                    -Gatorade

                                    -Rice Crispies Treats

                                    -Raw Almonds

                                    -Water

                                    -Cashews

                                    -Canned Air

Here’s were my supreme intelligence comes into play. I think that “canned air” is come kind of trendy, L.A., $6 bottle of water. So there I am searching for 20 minutes in the water isle, looking for something that I know isn’t there when a Hannaford’s employee walks by.

Do Not Drink

“Hey, do you have canned air?” I asked, pointing to the water shelf.

“Ahh, no. That’s more of a computer supply thing. You know, the stuff you clean your computer with? Try the hardware store.”

                  Well, then.

The first place we go to shoot is this barn about two miles away. When I get there, Pringles and raw almonds in hand, the crew has already started shooting. The host, Dave Mordal, is interviewing a horse that is not responding to him.

“So do you think we have a shot at winning this thing,” he asks the horse. Should be a good day.

Next, we headed over to the Ski Joring course that is located on the Colby-Sawyer Campus. I have gone here for nearly four years and had no idea this place existed. With help from the Mount Sunapee grooming team, a beautiful 100ft. course had been set up on the other side of the library. My job here was to hold on to the ski equipment and control the 100 windy hill 5-year olds that came to see the horses. Can I put baby-sitting on my resume, too? Throughout the course of the day the host, Dave, was taught how to successfully ski jor. He did surprisingly well, and we were ready for the competition on Saturday.

Friday was a pretty nice day, by New London standards. Saturday was closer to hell on earth. It was about 7 degrees with a twenty mph wind. Five minutes after arriving I realized I could not feel my nose. Great, only 10 hours and 55 minutes to go.

I guess the ski joring competition was part of this Winterfest carnival that New London has every year. News to me. I was surprised when thousands of people showed up for the races. I don’t know if it was because word got out that the Discovery Channel was coming, but that place was packed! My main job for the day was getting anyone who was on camera to sing a press release, saying that they wouldn’t sue them if we put them on camera. This was insane work. I think I got 400 of those things signed. Oh yea, no gloves, either. My hands still haven’t forgiven me.

I wont ruin how the host did because you should watch it (I think the director said it will air in six Tuesdays around March 10th), but it was a very entertaining shoot. My favorite part of the experience was when some guy showed up with a camel and claimed he was the worlds first camel ski jorer. Only problem? Horses and camels have this east coast/west coast beef going on which

Looking back, it was a great experience. I got to work with some really talented guys and got an inside look into how a television show is made. I even may have been in the background of a couple of shots! Big year for Lynnfield High (MA) graduates. First Whitney from the Bad Girls Club, then me hanging out with camels named Josh. Good times!

Wreckreation Nation airs Tuesdays at 9 after Dirty Jobs. Really cool show. Plus, a lot of footage of CSC on national TV. If you like America, and I hope you do, then you will love it.
