Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee take the long road to nowhere

Hollywood can be pretty predictable. For Example: once super hero movies hit it big, it seemed like every second movie was based on a comic book or graphic novel hero… they made alotta of money, but they were also alotta crap.

Thankfully, when dealing with great American literature, it’s a little harder to mess it up…. or maybe easier? Not in this case at least, thank God.

Last years big Oscar flick was No Country for Old Men, directed by the Coen Brothers and based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy. This year, I have a strong feeling that the interpretation of McCarthy’s The Road, directed by relative unknown John Hillcoat may tempt the Academy’s appetite for gorgeous cinematography and dystopian plot-lines. I find a general rule with the academy is if you contemplate ending it all by drowning yourself in your bucket sized soda while watching it, you probably will see it on the ballot. But I digress…

The Road stars Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings, Eastern Promises) as ‘Man’ or ’Papa’. He is perhaps one of the most talented actors of our time, despite being a bit of a late bloomer in terms of his star status. It also stars Oscar’s favourite blonde, Charlize Theron (in the smaller supporting role of ‘Woman’). But the hopeful glue holding this otherwise bleak and grey post-apocalyptic flick is newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee as ‘Boy’. At only 13-years-old, his innocence and depth of emotion is far beyond his years, and becomes the only reason you continue watching.

Interestingly, the boy is the only reason why Papa continues to stay alive in a world decimated by some unknown natural disaster, devoid of living things and running rampant with cannibals and gangs of outlaws. But this is no Mad Max; it’s picture of the fall of humanity is terrifying. In a sense, the film is about the nature of humanity. What would a human do to survive? Who are the ‘Good Guys’ when the concept of conscience, decency and basic order are lost to basic survival?

It’s not for everyone. Silent for long stretches of time, the film is a realist depiction of a common movie trend- the end of the world. NOT for children, the easily bored, or the weak stomached, it is nonetheless one of the greatest novel-to-film adaptations in a long time. At its core, it is about how much one father will sacrifice to see his son survive, and the hope that a child can find in the most hopeless of worlds.

In the article Objecting to Objectification: Re-Viewing the Feminine in The Silence of the Lambs (first printed in Journal of Popular Culture, 37.1, August 2003, pp. 1-12), Greg Garrett outlines ‘a theme that runs throughout the film’; the objectification of women. He argues that ‘by accenting Starling’s harassment, by removing male helpers present in the novel, and by stressing Starling’s resistance to the attempts of men to objectify her, the film creates… [a statement] about the various forms of female victimisation in our society.’

In his introduction Garrett refers to what he believes are the two core moments ‘consistent with [this] theme which runs throughout the film.’ The first is a scene where ‘Starling (Jodie Foster) holds up a punching target and braces herself as brawny male trainees light into her. She is no longer a woman; to her fellow trainees, she is only a punching bag.’ He believes that the fact she is surrounded by men and that they are shown to be pummeling her in this way, makes her seem less human, which makes way for the other times throughout the film in which men in her place of work objectify her because she is a woman.

This ‘verbal’ example clearly ‘reinforce[s] the idea that women must be seen as people rather than objects.’ This is what Garrett sees as something of a ‘strong… statement’.

Many examples Garrett makes in reference to this concept come in his references to things people say during dialogue with Starling. He recalls that ‘Starling is sexually harassed by Dr. Frederick Chilton’ when he is insultingly asks her for a personal ‘follow up’. Later he points out that ‘two young deputies make objectifying remarks about her.’ So through these examples Garrett shows the reader that in the scripted dialogue, the objectification of women is obvious in her male colleagues attitude and conversation with her.

Garrett argues that the ‘chief objectifier of women in the film’ is Buffalo Bill.  The main manifestation of Buffalo Bill’s objectification comes in the way he treats his victims; killing them so that he can ‘construct a costume of their skins.’  Garrett recalls Lector’s murdering method as similar in it’s objectification; (though it is not unique to women) he ‘turns people into gourmet meals’. However there is a difference with his attitude towards Starling when he ‘begins to regard her as a person, and thus is no longer capable of objectifying her,’ in the same way that Buffalo Bill was encouraged to.

Garrett describes his second reference from his description of the following scene:

…in response to a televised appeal broadcast to killer “Buffalo Bill” (Ted Levine) to release his most recent hostage alive, Starling lauds the strategy of repeating the victim’s name, Catherine, over and over. She knows that if Bill “sees Catherine as a person and not just an object” it will be harder to destroy her.

By analysing this theme in The Silence of the Lambs, we see that Garrett’s main aim is to highlight the moral importance of treating people as they should be; as humans, not as objects.

I’d Like the Corpse Kabob Please, Hold the Testicles – MOSCOW -  If you’ve ever eaten weird foods from around the world you know that there are all kinds of funky flavors and textures that come across as totally gross.  With this being the case, the first thing that enters your mind after taking a bite of something exotic might be, ”what the hell is this?”  If you were sitting in the Peking Gourmet Asian/American Buffet, you might think that crunch in your General Tso was a cat claw.  On the other hand, if you were munching on a late night gyro bought from the Middle Eastern  man’s  corner store and wondered what the hell you were eating, you might think  the tasty pink flesh is monkey meat.   But if you were in Russia, would you think the balls of meat grilled on a metal stick were from a dead dude?  Maybe.

Russian police have arrested three nut cases who they believed ate a 25-year-old man whom they butchered, barbequed, then sold the remaining parts to a local shish kebab and burrito house.   The jig was finally up when charred body parts were found near a bus stop around the corner from the restaurant.  All three bums had previous criminal records and a history of mental illness.  “After knocking the guy senseless with a hammer, they cooked him, ate him and sold what was left to a kiosk selling kebabs and tacos,” the Prosecutor-General said. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091116/od_nm/us_cannibals)

It was not immediately clear from the statement if any of the corpses had reached the homes of customers, but some said their meat had a little wang to it, while others said it tasted like nuts. 

I was in this huge old-fashioned house along with everyone from work. Apparently it was our manager’s house and she wouldn’t let us leave. Everyone was just wandering around the house on their own. Somehow we knew that she was a cannibal and wanted to eat us. Not like she was chasing us around with knives or something but she was just keeping us there so she’d have a constant supply of food.

Everyone seemed very resigned to the fact that she was going to eat us because “that’s just what she does”. I figured that there must be a way of escaping the house  so I started to look around. I bumped into another guy from work (can’t remember who) and he said he was looking for a way out too. I wished him luck but we decided to go it on our own because we thought forming a group would be too obvious and much more likely to fail.

I wandered down a corridor and I was looking at the paintings on the wall. Suddenly I was pulling one of them off the wall and there was a window behind it. I could see that it was nighttime outside. I slipped through the window and started running. Then Joanne was running beside me for some reason.

Out of nowhere my manager came chasing behind us. For some reason she was wearing a pair of kitten heels and they made a loud clicking sound with every step she took. As she was running, she said, “Oh I do love my new shoes!” in such a creepily happy way. Joanne and I were running towards a nearby hotel because we’d be safe there. I woke up before we reached it…or before she caught us.

Wonder how many people dream that their boss wants to eat them…

Some – like us – might say that this Canadian duo with two haunting female vocalists is reminiscent of Bat For Lashes, but the more we listen to them the more we think they just make cool, edgy, awesome, dance, pop music!

Cannibals

There were three men who were lost in the forest.

They were then captured by cannibals.

The cannibal king then told the prisoners that they could live if they
pass the trial.

First step of the trial is to go to the forest with the cannibals and
get
ten pieces of the same kind of fruit.

So all three men went separate ways to gather fruits.

The first one came back and said to the king, "I brought ten apples."

The king then explains the trial to him. "You have to shove the fruits
up
your ass without any expression on your face or you’ll be eaten."

The first apple went in.. but on the second one he winced out in pain,
so
the savages fell upon him and devoured him.

The second one arrives and shows the king his ten fruits were berries.

When the king explained the trial to him he thought to himself ,that
this
should be easy. 1… 2… 3… 4… 5… 6… 7… 8… on the ninth
berry
he suddenly burst out in laughter.

Summarily he was rended limb from limb and eaten.

The first guy and the second guy met in heaven.

The first one asked, "Why did you laugh, you almost got away with it?"

The second one replied, "I couldn’t help it.. I looked up and saw that
the
third guy coming with an armload of watermelons."

Russian police have arrested three homeless people suspected of eating a 25-year-old man they had butchered and selling other bits of the corpse to a local kebab house.

Suspicions were raised when dismembered parts of a human body were found near a bus stop in the outskirts of the Russian city of Perm, 1,150 km (720 miles) east of Moscow.

Three homeless men with previous criminal records have been arrested on suspicion of setting upon a foe with knives and a hammer before chopping up his corpse to eat, local investigators said in a statement on their www.susk.perm.ru Web site.

“After carrying out the crime, the corpse was divided up: part was eaten and part was also sold to a kiosk selling kebabs and pies,” the Prosecutor-General’s main investigative unit for the Perm region said in a statement issued Friday.

It was not immediately clear from the statement if any of the corpse had been sold to customers.

Ninja Not
A Seattle man is in hospital with severe injuries after he impaled himself on a metal fence while pretending to be a ninja.  The man dressed as a ninja with the express intent of trying to rob and assault people.  Police say he was attempting to assault a woman who ran away from him.  He chased after her and tried to leap over a 5 foot metal fence, but failed to clear it properly.  He impaled himself one of the fence posts.  Police believe he may have been intoxicated at the time.

Uhm… I’m laughing so hard I’m not even sure what to say to this.  You’re pretending to be a ninja and you try to rob someone while pretending to be a ninja.  Then you jump over a fence, try to jump over a fence while pretending to be a ninja and you impale yourself…while pretending to be a ninja.  I need to understand why you are pretending to be a ninja in the first place.  The article describes the man didn’t climb up the fence and try to jump over, no, he tried to LEAP over the fence…a five foot metal fence with sharp spiky posts…while pretending to be a ninja.

Bungled Burglary
Portuguese police had to rescue a man who attempted to rob a grocery store because he got stuck in the window.  The man busted out the window and tried to crawl through but it was too small.  He even tried to take his pants off to make a little more room, but he just got even more trapped.  There was nothing for him to grab hold of so he could pull himself, so he was trapped in the window for 11 hours with his pants around his ankles.  Nobody even noticed him until the morning shift showed up the next day and saw him hanging in the window.  Then it took 2 hours for the fire department to break him out.  They took him to the hospital for his injuries, and then they took him to jail.

Well, at least he didn’t impale himself while pretending to be a ninja, but this is just as bad.  I know we’re all a little bit desperate because it’s a horrible economy and the holidays are coming soon.  We’re just trying to get by, but you know, if you’re going to lead a life of crime, you should be a little bit smarter about it.  I know my fat ass is not fitting through any windows any time soon, so I would try a different method of break-in.  You think!

Kannibal Kabob
Three Russian men are under arrest on suspicion of murder after police found dismembered body parts at a bus stop.  Police say the three men, who are homeless, attacked another homeless man, murdered him, and then ate him before selling the extra body parts to a kabob stand.  The men are charged with “setting upon a foe with knives and a hammer before chopping up his corpse to eat.”

So Russia is no longer on my Top Ten Places to Visit.  First, I’m disturbed that the Russians have an actual charge for this sort of thing.  “Setting upon a foe with knives and hammer before chopping up his corpse to eat,” indicating that this sort of thing might happen all the time.  In America, we just have murder, attempted murder, cannibalism, not an actual title but you know they do things differently in other countries.  Secondly, I’m disturbed that they don’t exactly say what happened with the kabob stand.  Did the body parts make it into a kabob?  Did someone buy a human meat stick and eat it?  I need to know.  It was like the only crime was “setting upon a foe with knives and a hammer before chopping up his corpse to eat,” but nothing is wrong in buying human body parts, or using body parts to make kabobs and meats.  Once again, foreign countries.  Yeah.

Drug Dealer Daddy
A Salt Like City mother is under arrest after it was reported that she gave her 9 month old child to a drug dealer.  The mother claims that she did not give her child to the drug dealer as payment for drugs, but so that the drug dealer could actually take care of the baby.  Someone reported the baby being in a local crackhouse and when police raided the place, they did find a 9 month old child there.  The mother is a meth fiend and she gave the drug dealer the baby’s Medicaid card and a note stating that the drug dealer would have guardianship.  Police say the bizarre thing was that the house was completely filthy but the baby was clean, healthy, taken care of and not injured in anyway.  The child is now in child protective custody.

Well, that’s pretty random.  Hmm, why don’t I let my local crack dealer take care of the kid while I’m gone this weekend, because that seems like a reasonable thing someone should do.  Now, I know when you’re a meth fiend you don’t usually make the brightest decisions, but I can’t imagine even the most doped up lunatic would think a crackhouse is a daycare center.  I guess it truly is bizarre that the dealer was seriously taking good care of the child.  I guess he was standing on the corner with the kid in a baby sling while he sold dime bags.  Take your child to work day.

Christmas Cows & Cannibal Cows

Ahhh..to be a Christmas Cow.  How sweet would that be?  But, I’m not sure I would want to be a human-eating, Cannibal Christmas cow..that would be wrong..and gross.  Why did I mention that disgusting-ness?  You’ll find out at the end.  So be sure to keep riding the Christmas Cow on your journey through this blog.

~Last weekend I got a chance to check out some of the really neat Christmas lights around Oxford Circus on the way to church (@ All Soul’s Church this time).  It was pretty fantastic, and the pics I have here are the best I could do with my little, but serviceable “point & click” camera.  Maybe one day when I want to splurge the cash on a really nice camera and take some formal training just for fun, I can take some really awesome pictures that would really make the cows call home. Moo!!

Anyway, these “Christmas Carol” lights were part of that whole “Christmas Switch-on” thing.  But marketing gimmick or not, it still seemed pretty neat and really created a nice magical aura to the the Oxford Circus (which is typically a shopping haven for Londoners).

I can’t get enough of this short animated film!

“Kigeki (Comedy) is a short anime film produced in 2002 by Studio 4°C, and directed by Kazuto Nakazawa. It features ‘two Schubert pieces, ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘Erlkönig’.” – subbedfilms on youtube.com

The narrator, a 20 year old Irish peasant girl, recounts her encounter with a lone Black Swordsman. He accepts the rare book she offers in exchange for saving her village from the English invaders. It turns out that his taste in literature is not the only peculiar thing about him. He also has a liking for human flesh.

What an appetite! He ate all 200 soldiers in one night! But, apparently, he doesn’t eat small children.

Bottomline, it’s just another dark fairytale. Just like the original versions of the Grimm’s collection. Just the way I like it.

MAN MURDER AND EATS HIS MOTHER GET LESS SENTENCE

Sergei Gavrilov admitted he had used parts of his murdered mother’s legs to make soup and pasta for weeks on end. But he argued he was driven to the desperate act because he had ran out of money and was starving.

“”I did not like the meat very much … it was too fatty but I was so hungry I had to eat it,” the newspaper quoted him as telling a Russian court..”

A court in southern Russia accepted his explanation and ruled that the unemployed 27 year-old had therefore not wantonly defiled his mother’s own corpse. It did find him guilty of murder, however, and sentenced him to fourteen years and three months in prison, according to Russian news agency Interfax.

That is nine months less than the standard 15-year sentence for such a crime. Mr Gavrilov got off more lightly because of his confession and because the judge believed he had turned to cannibalism out of hunger rather than preference.

Mr Gavrilov said he had killed his 55 year-old mother Lyubov last January after she refused to hand over her pension. He wanted to spend the money on a drinking and gambling binge.

Angered by her refusal, he hit her on the head with a brick and strangled her with an electric cord before dumping her lifeless body on the balcony.

It was only two weeks later after he had spent all her money that he discovered that her body had frozen on the balcony and decided to begin slicing bits of flesh from her legs to keep his hunger pangs at bay.

Gavrilov was sentenced to 14 years and 3 months even though the Russian criminal code dictates a term of 15 years for this type of crime, but the judge said, “he was not keen to eat the meat, he just was hungry,” and gave him a reduced sentence. It will not be his first time in jail. Gavrilov had previously been incarcerated for robbery. Psychiatrists deemed Gavrilov as mentally “normal”.

La Course en tete/The greatest show on earth is a fantastic documentary and a great chance to see ‘The Cannibal’ in all his glory.

The DVD is split into two films. The first is La Course en Tete ( head of the course ) and focuses on Merckx himself and his great career.

The second film is The Greatest Show on Earth, and a very captivating film on the 1974 Giro d’Italia. It shows Merckx, and all his rivals very well. You’ll come away cheering for Jose Manuel Fuente, the greatest climber of his generation who was one of the only men with the grit to attack Merckx.

Honestly this is a great watch and for anyone who loves a bit of old footage this is like the holy grail.

Animal cannibalism is not a new thing. It’s just the bite that looks scary. He could eat someone up in one gulp.
