Andaba yo por Twitter. Leyendo un poco. De repente Enrique Meneses dice algo:

Después de leer el artículo del twitt llego a la conclusión de que todo lo que se dice sin prueba alguna, cosa que, para hacer afirmaciones categoricas debería ser insuficiente. Enrique Meneses es un reputado periodista, así que me parecío cuanto menos paradójica su contundencia, ya que no duda ni por un momento en la posible veracidad de los hechos. De esta manera y en un intento de respuesta escribí:

A Yoani Sánchez no le han pegado. Es una farsante. Habría que demostrarlo…

Creo que se nota claramente que intento dar la misma versión pero al revés para intentar hacer reaccionar a alguien acerca de lo fácil que es afirmar algo sin prueba alguna. De hecho, para no afirmarlo totalmente puse “Habría que demostrarlo“. Esperaba la misma reacción que en el caso anterior, con lo que no contaba es con que algunos twitteros se lanzasen a atacarme al decir esto, sobretodo teniendo en cuenta que aceptaron el twitt de Enrique Meneses sin el menor atisbo de duda. ¿Qué había dicho yo que no hubiese dicho él? ¿No se supone que la información es neutral? ¿O es que simplemente tenían ganas de deslegitimar al regímen cubano?

Empieza así la cosa:

Aparte de que obvia la parte final de mi twitt, lo que acaba con el sentido del mismo, su intención es claramente ofensiva. Tras esto hay un intercambio de “argumentos” que no creo que merezcan la pena resaltar pero que estan en mi timeline y en el suyo. Lo que sí me gustaría que quedase claro es como me acusa de negar la agresión a esta disidente (tampoco la afirmo) sin haber dicho nunca realmente eso (sino que lo demuestre). También el hecho de que después de haberme declarado contrario al regímen cubano se me acusa de paleocomunista por unas cuantas personas y se utiliza la demagogia sin querer razonar, todo después de haberme llamado dogmático por poner en duda algo. Yo creía hasta hace poco que el dogmático era el que no ponía en cuestión nada y actuaba como un autómata, que es la actitud que ellos han tomado desde que empezó el debate, pero al parecer un sociata también tiene el poder de darle nuevos significados a los términos.

Cosas que se han dicho y que creo que merecen una disculpa:

Ahora poner en cuestión algo que se ha dicho sin argumentos ni pruebas también es insultar. Todo por el hecho de que no me sale de las narices de creerme lo que me cuentan si no son capaces de demostrarmelo. ¡Pero oigan! ¡Yo soy el individuo normal que no ha demostrado nada en la vida! ¡Debería usted ser la que dude de periodistas que no contrasten sus informaciones y no den una misera prueba! No conozco el respeto porque no tengo una visión opuesta a la suya, porque no me creo lo que su amiguito periodista me diga, no tengo respeto porque creo que lo que se publica hay que demostrarlo, porque creo que es una falta de verguenza que haya periodistas publicando la primera bocanada de información que les llega a su pupitre. ¿Por eso? Sí es así no tengo verguenza. Sino quizás la que no tenga verguenza es ella, mucho mayor que yo, una persona que se supone que es madura y responsable por llamarme maleducado, don nadie, irrespetuoso, difamador, caprichoso y encima que no doy la cara. En ningún momento se ataca a Yoani, solo que se pone en cuestión el hecho de que se pueda publicar algo sin pruebas y pase por una verdad absoluta.. ¿Para que leer lo que decimos? ¿Para que mover su argumentación? ¿Para qué tener en cuenta el hecho de que me haya pronunciado contra el castrismo (por su falta de democracia) antes de llamarme paleocomunista? Una verguenza. Creo que merezco una disculpa. Sino es que simplemente son artesanos de la demagogía.

PD: No menos grave es lo que se dice de manera directa e indirecta contra Carlos.

Muy buenas de nuevo, hoy vengo con la figura de Francisco Cano Alcaráz, no me gustaría que cayese en el olvido, ya que no he logrado encontrar información acerca de esta figura importante en la Comunidad Valenciana, y por desgracia, hoy en día muy poco conocido en Torrent, lugar en el que hoy día descansan sus restos, en alguna calle del cementerio de este municipio.

Francisco Cano, también conocido como “El Guerrillero de Torrente” o simplemente “El Telegrafista de Torrente”

Francisco nace en 1894 en Valencia. Era una persona radioaficionada, un hoby que le costó caro, pero justo antes de la guerra civil, disfrutó mucho de ese pasatiempo.

Tras la sublevación del 18 de Julio de 1936, el Comité ejecutivo popular de Torrent tomó “Radio Torrente”,  y la controló hasta final de la guerra. Aquí  es donde entra en escena nuestro protagonista principal, Francisco Cano, que trabajaba para correos y telégrafos de Valencia. Socialista convencido, pero no llegó a militar en el PSOE, se puso a los mandos de Radio Torrente y comenzó a defender el gobierno de la II República.

Mientras la guerra iba avanzando, Francisco, desde Torrent, apoyaba al ejército republicano en su defensa para que no tomaran Madrid, y posteriormente que no se acercaran a las posiciones del Mediterráneo.

Por otro lado, el bando nacional, Francisco no tardó en polemizar contra Queipo del Llano, que desde Radio Sevilla, arengaba a las tropas nacionales. Entonces Queipo no tardaba en contestar a Francisco e insultarlo muchas veces – “El telegrafista de Torrente ese, ha dicho que no tomaremos Madrid, pues sí que tomaremos Madrid”, entonces de nuevo, el telegrafista de Torrente, Francisco, contestaba a Queipo  -“Anda que tomarán Madrid, hundiremos a la canalla fascista”. Durante mucho tiempo el telegrafista de Torrente fue una persona popular, y a Queipo de Llano le molestaba muchísimo y se metía con él continuamente. Todo esto último, fueron palabras textuales que comentó José Mª Cruz Román, locutor de Unión Radio durante la guerra, que conoció y escuchó a Francisco.

Antes de que los sublevados tomaran Valencia, Francisco se desplaza a Barcelona, donde permanece refugiado. Tras pasar un tiempo en Barcelona, unos falangistas de Torrent, tras enterarse de su paradero, se desplazan en vano hasta Barcelona, donde es perseguido y capturado.

De vuelta, es encarcelado en la Torre de Torrent, que por aquél entonces fue usada como prisión franquista, donde fue encarcelado durante 16  meses, debido a un juicio de irregularidades procesales. Durante su estancia en la prisión torrentina, sufrió mucho, pues el trato y la comida que recibió fueron infrahumanas, típico de los campos y prisiones franquistas. También cabe destacar, que su hijo, Francisco Cano Regolf, también estuvo detenido en esa misma cárcel junto a su padre, pero él, sin embargo fue liberado.

Finalmente, el 20 de Julio de 1941, su sufrimiento por fin llega a su fin, lo trasladaron a Paterna, y lo llevaron hasta el cementerio de ese municipio, una vez allí, fue fusilado, con motivo de colaboración y apoyo al gobierno de la II República.

El cadáver de Francisco, en 1997, fue exhumado y trasladado al cementerio de Torrent, donde hoy en día descansa en paz, en alguna calle de dicho cementerio.

Change is nothing new at B&N

so anyway, i continued on to my usual wall, to look at my beloved science books, only to see….something I wasn’t looking for. The science books wall had been changed to a humor and comics section (ironically, the book i needed to get was a humorous novel), which left me traveling throughout BandN’s Labrynth until I found the much reduced Science section of books. In the end, I ended up not buying any book (because they didn’t have anything I was looking for). but that’s not the point of this post.  and you may be saying…hey guy, who cares? well sure, i’m weird, but i think everyone should care. this is a big deal. the transition from bookstore, to store that just happens to have books in it is gradual but growing fast. i find it outrageous that this bookstore is down to selling board games and other novelties instead of the product one actually goes there to buy. but this is no doubt the result of the society we live in: the internet changes the way real world stores have to be run.(slightly off topic: i got the barnes and noble e-reader for my ipod touch…in a few words, its awesome. leaps and bounds better than shelling out for a kindle).

The Yankees need to use the fire they showed tonight and win Game 6.

but barnes and noble franchises aren’t the only things my life’s about. there’s more going on in the world. in its eponymous series, the phillies started off by winning the first game, and with a blink of an eye, the yankees brought it to 3-1. and by jove, i know i’m not the only one who loves to see them beat pedro martinez. tonight, even in a game they were expected to (and did) lose, they showed some fire that I just hadn’t seen from them in a while. sure they won three games in a row, but it seemed like they were just barely showing up, personified by the lackluster player of the postseason: Robinson Cano. Seriously, do the recent Yankees just have bad luck with second base in the playoffs or what? in fairness to Soriano and Knoblauch, who despite their troubles, always seemed like they were trying their hardest. Cano just doesn’t show it.  my solution would be to use ramiro pena or jerry hairston for a game, just to show him he has something to lose. But maybe that’s his style, you say in his defense? but then why is it that all he does is look like he’s just waiting for the game to finish so he can go out and do some blow in the back of a limo with with Melky till dawn. but i digress…theyankees need to use the fire they showed tonight but get the image of cliff lee and his titanesque pitching stature out of their minds, go back to new york, and win this damned thing already. it’s taken too long to get to #27.

just a little off rant, the commercials in the playoffs are really bad this year (though nothing can be worse than this). if there’s an original spot, it’s overplayed to death, just like the bad, annoying ones are. and then there’s FOX  with it’s annoying fake drama sequences before every other inning and hapless baseball announcers.

i’ve personally turned the page on a few things in my own life. like a few weeks ago, i noticed my hair was getting long, so i got it cut. and then i bought some new pants for low low prices. some real spell binding stuff. this year’s coming to an end and it seems like a lot will be changing, but like the U2 song says, nothing really changes. though now we’ll be in double digits. and then in two years, the world will end. and then in 2015, i can finally beat up bullies on my hoverboard (even without power!).  and then my ultimate dream of being able to say 2009 as two thousand ought-nine without sounding like a grizzled old 19th C. gold prospector will come true. and really, that’s the best change i can think of.

El jueves no hubo Salvador pero hubo reunión del G-5. Sus componentes: Jefazo, Arvi, Chico Google, Doctora Cano y servidora. Bien podría haber sido un G-6, 7 u 8 pero no todo el mundo estaba disponible. Jefazo presidía, y puso la financiación y el transporte necesarios para el encuentro. Solo los 5 presentes conocen todos los datos sobre lo que allí se habló, yo os lo resumo: incongruencias en conversaciones por el mesenger (lo siento, pero mi mesenger pehistórico no me permite ver cuánta gente está en la misma conversación), tractores, centros Guadalinfo, iniciativas sobre redes sociales, Bitácora, Party… El resultado de al reunión: un papel del vips con churretes de un VipsClub con un DAFO en el que solo estaba relleno el cuadro de “Debilidades”… ¡Chicos, hay que ponerse las pilas!

Aclaraciones a mi tía Concha: A ver… la asociación esta en la que estoy yo y con la que me voy los veranos por ahí? te suena? pues esa! Tuvimos reunión el jueves y estuvimos hablando de la estructura de la asociación (ADINUT) y los proyectos que hay para este año.

It is finally here: Phillies-Yankees. We will get to the matchups in a few moments, but first item on the list is George Steinbrenner pimping out the opening act. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys are performing “Empire State of Mind” and LeBron is throwing out the first pitch. Ok, the second one was a joke but the first one is serious, and in case you were wondering, Elton John will not be performing “Philadelphia Freedom” before Game 3. I personally find it pretty comical that Steinbrenner is basically holding a concert before the game. I can appreciate giving fans value for their money (which is a lot for Yankee Stadium), but doesn’t the idea of a performance before the World Series just seem comical. Maybe it’s just me. If so, let me know. Alright, let’s get to the matchups and we will keep score.

Catcher: Jorge Posada/José Molina vs. Carlos Ruiz

Posada is clearly the best of the three and under normal circumstances, but Ruiz has had himself a very nice postseason going 5-13 with 4 RBI in the NLCS while Posada was just 4-20. Whether or not this will carry over is anyone’s guess, but it definitely narrows the gap. Yankees 1, Phillies 0; but by the slimmest of margins.

First Base: Mark Teixeira vs. Ryan Howard

This is a marquee matchup even though the two really do not face each other head to head. Teixeira has the edge defensively over Howard despite Howard’s recent efforts to improve, but it is pretty even at the plate with both being outstanding players. Howard is easily the hotter player, but Tex found his groove toward the end of the Angels series, especially against Darren Oliver in Game 5. We will call this one a tie: Yankees 2, Phillies 1.

Second Base: Robinson Cano vs. Chase Utley

The advantage clearly goes to Utley here. Not only is he outstanding defensively and can do it all at the plate, he is one of the best baserunners in the game. Just watch him run the bases; it can change a game. For that matter, almost all the Phillies are good baserunners and they can certainly thank that, in part, for their success. Utley is the better player all around. Yankees 2, Phillies 2.

Shortstop: Derek Jeter vs. Jimmy Rollins

Defensively, no matter what anyone says, I have to give the edge to Rollins. Jeter makes great plays on the balls he gets to, but he gets to less balls overall. That means that the roller up the middle that Jeter just barely misses making a play on is a ball J-Roll gets to. However, at the plate Jeter has been red hot and his leadership skills have to be taken into account. Jeter wins. Yankees 3, Phillies 2.

Third Base: Alex Rodriguez vs. Pedro Feliz

This one is pretty close. Ok, not really, A-Rod is the hottest player on the planet and Pedro Feliz is Pedro Feliz. A-Rod is better in every aspect of the game. Yankees 4, Phillies 2.

Outfield+DH: Damon, Matsui, Cabrera, Swisher vs. Ibanez, Victorino, and Werth

I can honestly say that the Phillies have the edge at every position. The Phillies have a phenomenal core of outfielders frankly. Ibanez has picked back up after his September slump; Victorino and Werth are hotter than firecrackers. Damon has been hot too, but he is a liability at times with his arm. Swisher showed no signs of life against the Angels and although Melky has been hot, he is not as good as Victorino. This one is 3-0 Phillies. Yankees 4, Phillies 5.

Starting Pitching: Sabathia, Burnett, Pettite, 4th Starter vs. Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Martinez, Happ, Anyone Else

After Cliff Lee, this is a win for the Yankees. Sabathia might even be able to beat Lee on the right night which would really hinder the Phillies chances. In order for them to win this series, they need to win Game 1. If Lee goes down, the morale will too and with Hamels in his current state, the Phils will be in trouble. If Hamels steps up and looks like 2008 Cole Hamels, the Phillies might even be the favorite to win it all. However, Hamels has shown no reason to have much confidence in him and Pettite has a much bigger advantage over a Phillies lineup who has not seen him than Joe Blanton (a former Athletics player) has against a Yankees lineup, almost all of which have experience against him. Not to mention, Pettite is a beast in the postseason. We will call Lee-Sabathia a tie, and the anonymous 4th starters a tie, but Pettite and Burnett have clear advantages. Yankees 8, Phillies 7. By the way, how envious are Indians fans (such as myself) at the fact that two of their former starters are starting Game 1 and facing each other. Too bad neither plays for the Indians.

Bullpen minus Closer: Hughes, Coke, Chamberlain, Marte, Aceves, Robertson vs. Durbin, Madson, Park, Eyre

Going into the playoffs, this would have been a clear Yankees victory, but they were really shaky against the Angels and Girardi seemed to lack a little bit of trust in them, especially when he left Burnett in for the start of the 7th. On the other hand, the Phillies pen has been outstanding and really did a job on the Dodgers. I am going to give out only 1 point for this category since it does not even include the closer but right now the bullpen matchup favors the Phillies. Tied 8-8. I promise I didn’t plan that.

Closer: Mariano Rivera vs. Brad Lidge

Lidge has been perfect this postseason, but it just doesn’t matter. Mariano Rivera is the best closer in baseball history (sorry Trevor) because of what he does in the postseason. The Braves of the 1990s felt that if they had Rivera instead of the Yankees, they would be the ones with 4 rings in the 90s. Keep in mind, Rivera only deals with 1 innings, with 4 to 5 outs max and the Braves feel he could have put them so over the top that they would have won 3 more rings. Lidge has been outstanding, but Mariano Rivera is simply the best. Yankees 9, Phillies 8.

Intangibles: Ballpark, NL-AL and Overall Impact

The Yankees are lucky they have a lefty going in Game 1 because it will be harder for the Phillies switch hitters to pull the ball out of the ballpark from the left side, and Ryan Howard will have less chance of killing them. We all know that the 2 stadiums are bandboxes, but I think there is a minimal advantage for the Phillies getting their lefties in the new Yankee Stadium. The Phillies also have a slight advantage in being structured like an AL team. When they go to an AL park, they are more than fine fielding a DH, but when the Yankees go to a NL park, they lose a significant contributor. If Burnett pitches in Philly, it is even more pronounced since Molina replaces Posada as well. Both of these advantages are minimal though, so we will give them 1 total point for both. That ties it up 9-9.

It is the Yankees year. God, I hate seeing that in writing but even this Yankee hating Indians fan has to admit it. The Yankees are a team of destiny this year and even the defending Champions cannot deny their swag. Name almost any other sport and a defending champ returning to the championship and they would be huge favorites, but the Yankees are favored to win. The Phillies have an experience advantage since they are the reigning champs, but the veteran core of the Yankees can make up for that. It just comes down to feel. There is something about this Yankees team where you feel like they are going to win every game no matter how improbable. They have the swag, and the swing, and in a few weeks time, they will have the rings to match. Yankees 10-9.

Just because it is so close does not mean it will go seven however. If the Phillies drop Game 1, it could be over in 4 or 5, but if the Phillies are clutch it could very well go 7, and with a little luck they could come out on top, but it will not quite happen. The Yankees are your 2009 World Series Champions.

The Angels must've listened to George Costanza's hitting advice

Oh Angels. Just when I swear you couldn’t get any dumber, you go and do something like this…and completely redeem yourselves! The ALCS is headed back to Yankee Stadium after a 7-6 Los Angeles win in tonight’s Game 5, cutting New York’s series lead to 3-2.

The Angels jumped all over A.J. Burnett in the first, scoring four runs before the overpaid righty even retired a batter. Burnett settled in though, holding Vladdy & co. off the board to set up a six-run seventh inning rally, highlighted by a three-run double by Mark Texeira and a two-run triple by Robinson Cano, to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead. Figuring Burnett’s usual one inning of garbage was already under his belt (the first), Joe Girardi made the mistake of letting him head back out for the bottom of the seventh. Big mistake — Burnett put the first two on with a hit and a walk, then watched as can’t-miss prospect Phil Hughes gave up a pair of two-out, RBI singles to give the Angels a 7-6 lead.

Of course, star closer Brian Fuentes made things interesting in the ninth, loading the bases with a pair of walks (one intentional, to A-Rod) and a hit-by-a-pitch before getting true scholar Nick Swisher* to pop to short to end the game.

A little more nail-biting than it had to be for the Angels, but a win is a win. Game 6 goes Saturday in New York, with young Andrew Pettitte (14-8, 4.16) facing Joe Saunders (16-7, 4.60).

*According to popular legend (or, according to my London, Ontario BFF Courtney Jordan, who witnessed the whole exchange), Swisher was taking the field late in a Yankees-Jays game at Rogers Centre in September, when he turned to the first base umpire — I believe it was Bob Davidson — and yelled something to the effect of “These fans are f—ing idiots!”. The umpire then turned to C. Jordan, who was doing field security, and said, “Yeah, and he’s a real f—king scholar”. So there you have it — Nick Swisher = a real effing scholar.

Too much drama in Tim McClelland's life

What would the MLB Playoffs be without a host of blown calls by the league’s esteemed group of umpires? Following the running theme of this year’s edition, “Crew Chief” Tim McClelland made a couple of the worst calls you’ll see this season in last night’s Yankees-Angels game — a pair that, luckily for him, didn’t have quite impact that Phil Cuzzi’s boner in Game 2 of the ALDS did. Nevertheless, another disappointing display from the men in blue (or black — I’m still trying to figure that one out).

McClelland had the tough task of umpiring third base last night — a position only rivaled in difficulty by the left and right field slots, which are usually reserved for masterminds like Cuzzi. The first botched call came when the Angels appealed Nick Swisher had left the bag too early when tagging and scoring on a fly ball to center. McClelland ruled Swisher out, though replays showed he wasn’t even watching the play and that Swisher was indeed still on the base when the catch was made. I’ll let the video below show McClelland’s other masterpiece call, which came in the fifth with the Yankees leading 5-0:

McClelland — the great man that he is — came to the media room afterward to explain his gaffes. Of the first call, he claimed “in his heart” he believed Swisher left the bag too soon and that he was “not sure I believe the replay” — the very replay that showed him not even looking. No, I’m not sure I believe it either. As for the rundown call, McClelland said he thought Robinson Cano was touching third base when he was tagged, implying he wasn’t paying attention there either. Make sense to me.

Anyway, enough of this “human element”. I say let’s bring in the machines and get this right…

Wow!  What a game 3!

Well, my final score prediction was off, but I was close.  Mathis came up huge for us.

That’s the amazing thing about the postseason.  A team’s depth become evident when the players you don’t expect to provide offense are coming through in clutch situations.  We’re all expecting big things from Vlad, Abreu, Hunter and Figgins.  But Kendrick and Mathis were the stars yesterday.  Same can be said of the Yankees.  Cano, Swisher, Cabrera are not doing their part while the stars are hitting.

Girardi really seems to over-manage his bullpen.  I was questioning a lot of his moves.  They all worked out for us, so I guess he should keep making them.

Pettitte was really dealing yesterday.  It was clear that the Angels were trying to be aggressive and the Yankees took advantage of it.  This win should really get this team back on track to Angel baseball.

Today’s match up is a tough one.  Facing Sabathia again, I’m hoping the Angels can get to him early.  If the Angels can get to the Yankees bullpen early, then we should be able to even up the series.

Prediction:  Angels 7, Yankees 4.

Near-threatening errors and pouring rain didn’t stop the Yankees from taking a 2-0 ALCS lead over Anaheim last night, in a marathon game that went on for 5 hours and 10 minutes – including commercials.

Derek Jeter and Robinson Canó combined for three lousy errors during the game; Canó committed two of those errors. A.J. Burnett, the Starting Pitcher, held off Anaheim for 4 innings. But in the 5th inning, things started getting a little shaky. Burnett gave up 2 RBI to tie up the score 2-2 (the 2nd being on a wild pitch when Anaheim had the bases loaded and Vladimir Guerrero was on deck). Joe Saunders had no decision, either.

Mariano Rivera worked two wonderful innings. However, in the 11th inning, everything nearly went to waste for the Yanks as Chone Figgins made what would’ve been the game-winning RBI 2B for Anaheim. A-Rod’s solo home run, which he hit a few minutes later, was his answer to Figgy’s “game show win”-style celebration. “Oh, yeah? Well, take this!”

People on the Yankees Message Board were posting lamebrain comments about “WAA…A-Rod’s ball wasn’t 100 feet but LOL at the trolls,” “whole season wasted,” “Canó must take off his ninja disguise,” “so-and-so should be dubbed ‘Choker of the Millennium,’” “Marte will kill the Yanks,” “Brian Fuentes this,” “Vladimir Guerrero that,” and then some. The reaction changed with Melky Cabrera’s walkoff RBI scored on a bad error on Anaheim’s part to bring Jerry Hairston Jr. home…in the 13th inning! And of course Mr. Hairston got a pie in his face from Mr. Burnett. Like I said before, A.J. loves throwing pies in people’s faces in the event of walk-off hits, and to think he nearly choked in this game!

ALCS Game 2 – NYY 2-0

Yankees 4 Angels 3 (13 innings)

The Yankees struck first with a two out rbi triple by Robinson Cano that scored Nick Swisher early on in the game. They tacked on another run in the third inning courtesy of a Derek Jeter home-run. The Angels tied score at 2 in the fifth inning and took the lead in the 11th on a Chone Figgins rbi single down the left field line. The Yankees were now down 3-2 in the bottom of the 11th and A-Rod led off the inning. A-Rod took two fastballs basically right down the middle to get into an 0-2 hole, but on the next pitch Fuentes left a fastball up and out over the plate and A-Rod deposited it into the right field seats to tie the game at 3. It was A-Rod’s third home-run of the playoffs and every one of his homers has either given the Yankees the lead or tied the game. Both the Yanks and the Angels had their chances to take the lead in the 12th but squandered their chances. Pinch hitter Jerry Hairston Jr. led off the bottom of the 13th with a line-drive single to center. Later in the inning with 1 out and Hairston on second and Cano on first, Melky Cabrera grounded into the hole between second and first. Maicer Izturis fielded the ball with his momentum towards first base and decided to throw off balance to second base in order to try to turn the double play. Izturis’ throw to second went into left field and Hairston scored the winning run from second base. The Yankees have taken a commanding 2-0 series lead and Alex Rodriguez has really stepped up so far in this postseason. If A-Rod keeps producing, the Yankees will be awfully hard to beat.

When last we met, I spoke about the young blood in the Yankee dugout.  How incredible they have been!!  Last night it was their turn to show us.  Now that they clinched the American League Eastern Division title, many of the regulars were given the night off.  So, instead of the stars taking the field, the “baby” bombers took the field.  I must admit, at first I thought it wouldn’t be that interesting.  To make it worse, there was a 2 hour rain delay.  Then they finally got started…

We watched Chad Gaudin pitch yet another incredible game.  Then we watched Ramiro Pena hit his 1st major league home run.  As he rounded the bases, the regulars got ready to jump all over him.  What happened next was so incredible…  Alex Rodriguez quickly rounded up the guys and made them all sit down.  There would be no congratulating.  In fact, they were going to just ignore that kid that just jumped into the dugout with the million dollar smile on his face…  They were going to give the newby the silent treatment!!  It lasted for about a second or two before they all jumped up to congratulate Ramiro.  It was an incredible moment.

Then there was yet another incredible moment… Robinson Cano comes up with the bases loaded and guess what… he hits a grand slam!  The energy in that clubhouse just keeps growing and growing.  Let’s keep the momentum going… Let’s go Yankees!!  Goal for 2009 – Canyon of Heroes!!

É bom procurar uma ótima desentupidora.

It has been a long time since I have written.  In fact, it was in May, 2009 when I was yelling about Same-Sex Marriage and Human Rights!!  Simple I thought.  Boy was I wrong.  As Obama seems to learn every day, nothing is simple in this country.  On September 15, 2009, a bill was introduced by Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat, seeking to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act passed in 1996.  Stand by as we watch it’s progress.

On a happier note, the New York Yankees are coming back!!  I began reminiscing about 1998 about 3 weeks ago and although they may come up a little short of the win-loss record of that era, they’re going to come pretty darn close.  Who can deny the positive effect that the kids have brought to the team.  I’m talking about Melky (The Melk-man) Cabrerra and Robbie  (Don’t you) Cano, as well as Ramiro Pena and Wednesday’s walk off hero Francisco Cervelli.  The enthusiasm has awakened the old timers!!  I look forward to the rest of the season and hopefully a very fruitful post-season.

Toronto Blue Jays 2B Aaron Hill is having a career year at the age of 27, the age most players historically tend to have one of their best overall seasons.  Hill has enjoyed a huge spike in power this year with 32 HRs (1 better than Chase Utley) as he has also seen his HR/FB double his career mark (15.5% in 2009) so I doubt Hill will continue to show this sort of power output next season if his fly ball numbers normalize.  Any way you look at it though Aaron Hill is having a fine season, one of the best seasons a Toronto Blue Jays 2B has ever had in fact. 

It made me want to see how he compared to the other big 2B currently employed in the AL East, with one exception, I left off Rays Ben Zobrist who is having a great season but has played nearly every position on the diamond.  The four 2B we will look it will be Toronto’s Aaron Hill, New York’s Robinson Cano, Bahston’s Dustin Pedroia and the Orioles veteran Brian Roberts, let’s see who has had the best season in 2009.

Standard stats:

Robinson Cano – .319 avg (babip – .324), 185 hits, 41 2B, 23 HR, 95 runs, 4 SB

Dustin Pedroia – .297 avg (babip – .303), 164 hits,43 2B, 13 HR, 100 runs,17 SB

Aaron Hill – .288 avg (babip – .294), 175 hits, 30 2B, 32 HR, 88 runs, 4 SB

Brian Roberts – .285 avg (babip – .322), 160 hits, 51 2B, 15 HR, 100 runs, 29 SB

Nobody has been overly unlucky so far on balls hit into play in terms of batting average and each player brings their own skill set to the table in the standard stats category. 

Advanced stats:

Robinson Cano – 4.4% BB / 9.8% K, .350 OBP, .197 ISO, .367 wOBA

Dustin Pedroia – 10.1% BB / 7.4% K, .369 OBP, .152 ISO, .359 wOBA

Aaron Hill – 5.3% BB / 14.8% K, .327 OBP, .207 ISO, .353 wOBA

Brian Roberts – 9.9% BB / 17.1% K, .353 OBP, .174 ISO, .357 wOBA

Very close in the ever important wOBA category (weighted on-base average) but I think Dustin Pedroia’s ability to take a walk and limit his strikeouts stands out to me, what he lacks in ISO he more than makes up for with OBP skills.

Defence:

Robinson Cano – UZR (– 6.2), RF/9 – 4.7,

Dustin Pedroia – UZR (10.2), RF/9 – 4.4,

Aaron Hill – UZR (-0.6), RF/9 – 5.2,

Brian Roberts – UZR (-4.3), RF/9 – 4.5,

I think Pedroia is the best defender of the four, but Aaron Hill is a close second.  I posed the question to the FanGraphs faithful as to why UZR was giving Dustin Pedroia such a big advantage and the general answer was “not sure”.  Some feel Pedroia on average is just making better plays, while some feel the Jays employ the exaggerated “shift” on lefties more than the average team (more than Boston) and this is robbing Aaron Hill of more “rangy” plays that Marco Scutaro is taking from him as the SS.

Final Ranking (ranked each stat 1-4 in all three categories, the best in each category is given a 1)

These results (taken with a grain of salt) are not that surprising to me and they shouldn’t be to Jay’s fans either, even though the common thread is that Aaron Hill is having the best overall season for a 2B by a landslide.  This does not take anything away from what he has done, the power spike has been huge and the league has taken notice but Aaron Hill is not without his flaws – notably his overall command of the strike zone and lack of patience at the plate.  The talk is that Cito Gaston plans to use Aaron Hill in the 3-hole next season, a spot typically held for the team’s best all-around hitter and a spot I do not see Aaron Hill thriving in unless he makes a marked improvement in both his BB% and OBP.
