Now I have entered the part of Perrin’s book where he begins to interact with other Thomas scholars. As I noted last time the three scholars toward which Perrin gives the most attention are Stephen J. Patterson, Elaine Pagels, and April DeConick. The chapter I will be posting on here (“The Thomas community on the move”) is the chapter on Patterson.

Stephen J. Patterson is the professor of New Testament at Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, MO. It is his suggestion that the author of Thomas was not dependent upon the canonical gospels. Therefore, the Thomas community has its own, independent origins. 1

Patterson argues that the order of the sayings in Thomas do not parallel the Synoptics, therefore it is odd to see Thomas as the production of someone who was copying from the Synoptics. 2 Where it appears that the author of Thomas has adopted Lukan or Marcan language it is suggested this crept in at a later stage of the document’s development. 3 Therefore, it may be best to call the Thomas tradition “autonomous” rather than “independent” since at some point it was rubbed on by the Synoptics. 4

For reasons given in the book Patterson dates the original Thomas as early as AD 70. 5 It was the product of a Christian community that was itinerant, cut its family ties, and lived a life of poverty and begging. It “prioritized” the “presence of the living Jesus” over “Jewish rituals and disciplines”. “Finally, it was a community open to women–well, sort of. The bad news, as the last logion in the collection tells us, is that women had to ‘become like men’ first (Gos. Thom. 114).” 6

Perrin responds with the following points of agreement:

(1) He agrees that the Thomas community was an ascetic group.

(2) Thomas‘ eschatology is actualized.

(3) Thomasine Christianity and Syrian Christianity are rightly compared by Patterson. 7

Perrin brings forth the following critiques:

(1) He doesn’t agree with Patterson’s reasoning for his argument that there is no dependence on the Synoptics since there are Mattheanisms and Lucanisms. 8

(2) Patterson makes the same mistake at James Robinson by “playing fast and loose with the categories of form and genre”. Therefore, Perrin disagrees that this document is a mere “sayings” document that was compiled without much of an agenda therefore leading us back closer to the real, historical Jesus. 9

(3) Although ascetic, it does not look like other models of asceticism in early Christianity. It goes further than the Synoptic tradition in its emphasis on poverty. It ignores that the Jesus Movement came forth from the movement of John the Baptist which had rites and rituals early on. 10

The conclusions reached by Perrin are fourfold:

(1) The order of the sayings does need some explanation if one is going to argue that Thomas depends on the Synoptics.

(2) Thomas Christianity was ascetic.

(3) Thomasine eschatology was realized eschatology (more like The Gospel of John than the Synoptics).

(4) There “are certain semblances between Thomas Christianity and early Syriac Christianity. 11

I’ve been revisiting some of my older shots, applying new techniques I’ve learned and ideas I’ve came up with. Sometimes these work, other times they don’t. This time they didn’t work. Instead of bouncing my flash off a reflector at 45 degrees above the water drops, I tried bouncing the flash off a reflector behind the subject and tilted slightly ahead. Later I added another reflector 90 degrees to the side. Regardless, I still got harsh highlights at the head of the shot. Adding reflectors, changing the angles of the reflectors, changing distance between flash and reflectors, and changing the exposure in camera couldn’t eliminate the highlights. My previous lighting set up worked much better.

The trick to making it work is lot’s of patience and commitment. I read a bunch on Chuck Gardner’s online tutorials which taught me much more than Canon’s manuals ever did. They should hire this guy.

The problem we agreed, with aux speedlites were recycling time, color temperature stability, light quality and of course, batteries. Shooting at 125 or 25oth shutter speeds is really hard on the battery life. The benefits though is the E-TTL run and gun ability when combined with high speed sync. Speedlites are pretty light and you can carry a three light kit in your gear bag with no worries. If you have line of sight things usually go smooth. I shoot a lot this way with a standard 3 light setup: Main (on-Camera as master), 2nd at 45 degrees of the subject, and one usually above and behind as a hair light. At $400 a pop for Canon’s flashguns, plus hardware such as stands, cold-shoe adapters, umbrellas…yada yada yada, things can get pretty expensive. The last bit is a simple fact that you just have to deal with, Ed put’s it this way: Everyone’s photo has that same look (Strobist) and it gets tired after awhile.

Then there is the Ranger…head not much bigger than a 580EX, color temp of 5300K reliably, power enough to kill mid-day sunlight and lot’s of battery power to spare. The recycling time is so fast that you can shoot like a machine gunner at 1/4 to 1/2 power. I don’t like the short cables, weight and price. Making outdoor portraits is pretty snazzy with this kit. Just set you customer WB to 5300K or thereabouts and start shooting. The IQ is pretty good…but honestly I don’t see that much difference from a Strobist setup with aux flash units, but I gave up portability and wireless setup.

580EXII & Ranger Head

I’m giving the Ranger to my cuz this week, it’s off to Thailand for 3 weeks. I love my speedlites and until I find a better solution to the portability, weight and E-TTL feature, I’m rockin’ on with them. I do have an interest in trying out the Q-Flash system and the ABR800 for studio work, but it’s nice to have part-time use of the Ranger.

Recently I went ahead and used a lens that I had to my disposal that has been sitting around for some time now.  The lens is an attachment that I can put on to my AE-1 Canon 50mm lens.  It is an ultrasonic super wide macro lens. When I chose to use it, Oct 15, 2009, the weather decided to act up.  There were leaves on trees still and the temperature was not too low.  Surprisingly snow fell.  It seemed like we were in a cartoon or on some special Hollywood set.  The way that the snow was only on the grass and the leaves was odd /surreal.  Night came really fast as well.  I took this opportunity to do some night photography.  There is something about the night and needing a long exposure that I enjoy because the outcomes become unpredictable.  That night that I was shooting I noticed that the snow was landing on the lens which led me to hope that it led to something good.  Standing around for one exposure that is more than thirty seconds allows me to make thoughtful decisions about the shots and then appreciate the space as I stand there. My results were rather nice.  The water molecules allowed for the light to reflect on to.  The image became mystified.  As cars would come towards me I would cover the lens so the image wouldn’t be blown out by the headlights.  Allowing for the lights to be shown of cars going away from the camera and me gives the sense of time spent there.  Yet the images are not long enough to be able to see that which is in the far distance.  We only get a hint/peek of what the space is like.

I also decided to use the wide angle to take some photos of an area that walk everyday and shoot it at different times of the day.  The interest came in with wanting to show more of the area with the camera than I was first showing with the 50mm lens.  Sure I could very easily have used a different lens instead using an attachment but why not use the attachment since I have it.  This specific lens also allows for a distortion but it is not directly recognizable unless one knows what to look for.

Canon 7D er nettopp lansert og det kommer ofte fort noen nye oppdateringer til slike kameraer. Oppdateringen gikk smertefritt.
Det andre kameraet 40D hadde også fått en ny Firmware og jeg tok det i samme slengen. Når man ser på de endringene som kommer er det ikke ofte noe som er så veldig viktig for meg, men i enkelte tilfeller kan ting bli rare uten disse fiksene. 40Dhar jeg hatt i et par-tre år nå og det har blitt over 30000 bilder med og det har aldri sviktet en eneste gang. Håper 7D blir like stabil. Ellers synes jeg det har blitt ok med HD-film direkte i kameraet og kvaliteten blir også meget bra.
