There must be something quite primaeval about swinging through the forest, calling to us from the distant origins of our evolution. Or possibly its just the effects of Disney and the Jungle Book: we all see ourselves as Mowgli even while heading for the size and shape of Baloo.

So it was that we decided to spend a hot summer’s afternoon on what was advertised at the time as the world’s (or possibly South America’s) longest canopy adventure, a 2 1/2 excursion involving a drive up the side of a mountain – it was hardly even a track let alone a dirt road – in a well-worn jeep followed by a series of 10 James Bond-esque swoops down cables, covering a total distance of 2.5 km.

Síle gets ready for the canopy

Maybe it wasn’t quite Daniel Craig, who would presumably have eschewed the helmet, safety harness and all those hooks and pulleys, sliding down on his wolfish grin while fending off all manner of strange assailants whose bullets could never quite penetrate the sang-froid of a British secret service agent, but it was fun nonetheless and we were, as promised, treated to some breathtaking if fleeting view through the trees and over the Lago Nahuel Huapi and on to the mountains beyond.

View of snow capped Andes behind the Lago Nahuel Huapi

It was great fun, if not excessively challenging. After sliding down ten different wires I was feeling that, while each was certainly different, there was a certain generic similarity and I could have done with some variety. I remember doing a series of tree-top courses in France that included the wire descents as part of a much more complex (and difficult) tour and felt that this facility could have done with branching out a bit, if you’ll excuse the pun.

Ailsa disappears from sight.

Tired but happy, we headed back to our lakeside apartments to watch the moon rise over the mountains after another glorious day

The observant ones of you may have noticed that James has been very clever (as usual!) and created an archive of our Trade Newsletters. All you need to do is click on the tab above (next to the home tab) to take you to this wonderful resource.

as well as photos of current projects and much more…

We’ll continue to add each month’s pearls of wisdom to the archive once we’ve sent them.

Meanwhile I’m afraid to report our canopy hasn’t progressed further yet – it’s due to be continued next week once the potential hitch over condensation in the double-walled construction is ironed out (not literally!).

Abby is back from her luxury snowboarding break – and with no broken bones – which is a big plus for us and our regular customers. I’ve asked Abby for a suitable photo for the blog, so hopefully next post…

Here it is folks…the post you’ve all been patiently waiting for…! Laura and I drov

Here it is folks…the post you’ve all been patiently waiting for…!

Laura and I drove to the local airport and parked at the skydive tunnel, excitement racing through every cell in our bodies.

Once inside we met up with Jordan, an 8-year old who was going to indoor skydive for the third time! I struck up a conversation with her and her dad John, the latter beyond thrilled for Laura and me and our “real” skydives. He offered to take pix of our indoor skydives so I readily handed over my camera with a few quick instructions.

The three of us divers then went into a room where we met our instructor Ryan and watched a 10 minute video. By the end of the video I was so dismayed — I thought the indoor dive would be so easy, but truly, there was so much to remember! Not only did one have to achieve and maintain the “stabile” position, but one had to remember and be able to react to 6 hand signals!!! Just when panic threatened to overtake the day it dawned on me that if an 8-year old could do this, so could I!

I hoped…

There were 5 of us sitting on a bench in the wind tunnel wait area. When instructor Ryan waved in his first victim I volunteered Jordan. She did great! The next victim? I volunteered Laura. She didn’t look the slightest bit happy during her flight, but I hoped that was truly because of her sore shoulder.

Next up was a teacher and a student. I’m not positive those were their roles, but they are my best guess. Why? The teacher used hand signals to get the student to move around in the wind tunnel — from high to low, around in circles, stopping on a dime, etc. All skills needed for formation diving. At least that was my determination.

Next up was…gulp…me.

Once inside the tunnel I achieved the stabile position and then HAD A BLAST!!!! I was laughing hysterically, smiling, sticking out my tongue and just plain beside myself with enjoyment!!!

Do I look like I’m having fun or what?????

After I went the teacher/student combo went again, followed by Jordan and Laura. Fortunately Laura looked much more relaxed during her second spin…

Before I could go out again the student/teacher combo hit the tunnel. To be honest, I was enthralled with watching them and monitoring how the tiniest movement, one nearly undetectable, was greatly alterting both of their positions.

Once we finished with the indoor stuff it was time for THE adventure of the day…tandem skydives from 12,500 feet!

I will admit to being stunned when we walked towards the skydive school. I absolutely did not expect to see all the people and facilities that were in front of me!

What’s not visibile in this picture are the inground pool, the restuarant/bar and the skydive schools! They’re behind the furthest building you see! I did question my instructor about the quantity of tandem dives and he said right now they’re averaging 40 tandem dives/weekend day — that will increase to 50-60 once the warmer months arrive. YIKES!!!

Laura and I followed the signs to the skydive school where we checked in, watched a video that strongly recommended we purchase videos of our flights (we did not), then watched another video, one explaining the legal issues that matched up with the 8 pages of disclaimers we had to sign.

Still fearless, we were ushered into an area where we met our instructors and were suited up with jump suits, harnesses, wrist altimeters and goggles. After several minutes of one-on-one instructions we all headed back towards where Laura and I first entered to wait for the plane. Within a few minutes said plane landed, taxied to a spot in front of us, was boarded by 21 people (9 sets of tandem divers and 3 videographers), screamed down the runway then was airborne — all within minutes of landing!

We were packed in like sardines facing each other, our backs against the sides of the plane. It was very noisy and the climb was very steep…the whole time. Once we hit 9,000 feet we students had to sit on our instructors laps so the attachement process could be finalized. Not only were we attached with super duty clips in 4 places, but after attachment the harnesses were pulled tight…super tight. Though the instructors wore helmets, we students did not for if we did we would surely chip the teeth or break the nose of our instructors should we put our heads back too fast/hard. We did however don goggles and gloves.

When our wrist altimeters registered 12,500 feet the door at the back of the plane was rolled up and people just started falling out. As the bench between us and the door emptied we scootched ourselves towards the door until finally it was our turn. I stood as instructed – my feet close together, hands on the harness (as if holding suspenders) and as we fell out the door, my head tilted backwards and leaned on the instructor’s shoulder.

Now, one might wonder if anywhere along the line I had even the slightest hesitation. The answer is a resounding NO! I was completely enthralled with the whole concept, confident after hearing all four clips click securely and excited at seeing what was outside the plane!

I had three very strong reactions within the first few seconds. The first was “damn it’s COLD”, the second was “WOW” and the third was “Holy Crap I’m skydiving — I actually did it!!!!!”.

Shortly thereafter my instructor grabbed my right arm, a sign that it was time for me to let go of the harness and let my hands complete the stabile position (my legs were already in place). We did a 120mph free-fall for less than a minute but managed to falll 7500 feet…then the chute, er…canopy, was opened. I instinctively grabbed the harness until I stopped moving upward.

The instructor gave me the canopy controls while he adjusted my harness. Since we were no longer hurtling towards earth the harness could be loosened.

I was able to locate my neighborhood though I did not specifically find my house — I was way too busy soaking in the aerial view of all the other roads I regularly travel while on the ground. When we were +/- 1,000 feet from the ground I was instructed on the landing — I needed to pull my knees up as much as possible and point my feet towards the canopy. This would ensure that the instructor’s feet would land first. Basically we were going to skid along the ground for a few feet…on our asses.

When I was told to pull up my legs I did…and we skidded…and I got a face full of grass…and it was AWESOME!!! Not because I was safely on the ground but because I DID A SKYDIVE!!!!

Here are a couple pix…the first is me and my instructor Adi after we landed, and the second is Laura and me…also after we landed…

Now for some interesting comments…

The only time I had any sensation of falling was after the chute/canopy was engaged and the instructor decided to put us in a corkscrew dive (nearly facing downward while turning VERY quickly in a corkscrew direction). My equilibrium was instantly screwed up which sent my stomach into fits. We didn’t do that again. Honestly —- even as we were mere feet from the ground there was NO sensation of falling. Fortunately my stomach settled down quickly…

Though I felt the cold when I first fell out of the plane, that sensation was gone in seconds and I never once felt any temperature at all.

I feel that my sense of peace about the dive is attributed to three things. First, with all the flying I do on commercial planes I’m very familiar with the view from way up. Second, the wind tunnel time did prepare me for the sensation. Third, I’m absolutely confident that my Mom was thrilled for me and this adventure and she took time from her afterlife to be my guardian angel throughout.

Wind blowing into your mouth at 120mph dries it out faster than 114+ ground temperatures in the middle of summer!

The dive was over waaaaay too soon…fortunately a local friend, Gene, who had previously done a tandem dive, called on Sunday to see what I thought and asked if I’d be interested in another. We’re going to dive sometime in mid-May!!!!

After Laura and I reluctantly left the airport we headed for my house and drank a couple glasses of wine. Then we walked a couple blocks so we could feed/pet the animals. They are so kewl…as soon as they see you standing at the fence they all start wandering over to enjoy the goodies you brought.

We headed back home and enjoyed our wild hibiscus flowers with raspberry syrup and champagne…

After drinking the champagne we ate the flowers! Yep…not only did we skydive in a windtunnel AND from 12,500 feet, but we also ate flowers!!!!!

We managed to stay awake until 8PM but then crashed until 6AM Sunday. By 8AM we were navigating the freeways to LAX so Laura could catch a flight back east - the drive made quickly thanks to it being a Sunday. I was safely back home by 11AM…just in time to spend the rest of the day, and I do mean the entire day, reinstalling EVERYTHING on my laptop…from the operating system to the programs (the latter not yet complete).

But all is well…three days after the dive and I’m still busting with pride and excitement…and anxiously awaiting my next dive!

The inside of the Sagrada Familia is this honeycomb and spore like cacophony of domes. Gaudi studied the way honey bees made their hives and the internal workings of spores and seeds to maximize the amount of light that was brought into the center chapel of the Sagrada Familia. It is both ingenious and interesting, the effect seems a bit jumbled and over the top but in true Gaudi fashion it has the “awe” factor. Here are a couple of images showing you the inside of the Sagrada Familia Cathedral.

I heard from Landscape architecture at Council about the choice of trees in Arnold Street that will replace the camphor laurels. One side of the street will be Melia azederach ‘Elite’. The trees that look to me like white cedar trees in Mayfield make a beautiful row.

Melia is listed in some places as a weed. In Victoria I believe the trees spread very easily and in rural areas they’re a problem because the berries are poisonous to cattle. The ‘Elite’ cultivar is non-fruiting I read today. They’re a beautiful tree, especially in flower. I’ve always admired the ones in Glebe Road and throughout Hamilton. It’s amazing that they’re not only native to Australia but also to places throughout Asia and the Middle East.

On the other side of the street will be Pistachio Chinensis. There’s a fantastic picture of one on the Arbor day website that’s worth a look. Sounds like a lovely street plan.

Camphor Laurels in Newcastle West

This is presumably what Arnold Street (see ‘Not shame file 2 but a sad day’) looked like 6 months ago. It’s a shame the wood from the Mayfield trees couldn’t have been used by woodturners; apparently it’s lovely.

The Council has corrected the minutes of the Public Voice meeting. Sadly the minutes are so brief as to make them almost worthless, but it’s usual to have only the briefest summary of Public Voice meetings as the minutes.Ian Mackenzie’s article in the Herald is always worth re-reading and keeping in your mind when Council’s re-education camp for treehuggers the community consultation process begins.

It gives me hope to remember that in 1977 when the Queen came to town to open the Art Gallery cutting the figs down was seriously discussed. This was because there was apparently an enormous number of starlings at the time and ‘They’ were worried that the queen might get bird poo on her hat.

Fortunately the umbrella had been invented some years previously so they took one of those along.

I read a wonderful quote on an arborist website:

A fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees.
- William Blake

So, an enterprise of the most important stage is marketing. Superior marketing strategy can take part in the company's height, but a strategy that could destroy a sound business third-class! Therefore, if an entrepreneur to be the height of its business operations, he must be very careful and selective strategic choice, because advertising is a company's market order. The use of an aluminum cap a long-term marketing company a good idea.

So, the market transactions andAluminum is a good thing, because it will not be easy to do long-term marketing, because it is very durable. Therefore, it can be concluded, aluminum canopies are the best long-term marketing, but it may be related to some of these issues, because they are not very useful. Hire a good high-capacity transport system is a good idea, aluminum canopy transport.

• People should check if the hood is entirely aluminum or not, as some traders to deceive electric iron canopyAluminum. In the actual test is always recommended.

• is easy to check with the iron, and only one magnet, and gives some examples, the expert review of materials. This is a better control of what should be experts in what they can, through appropriate means to the roof, but also easier to detect fraud.

• to ensure that manhole covers or not, is also a good idea, because some dealers are trying to rubbish首先.

• You should try with the transactions have good graphics, or a canopy in the picture because it is good-looking, with consideration given to a person's fingerprint is very important that good for business. Even if there is no upper limit on its pictures, they can easily become a painter, in particular, many traders to engage with artists and painters can work, which will save a lot of time to do.

Matireal from: Garden Canopy

Botanical Name: Abies fraseri – (Pursh.)Poir.
Family: Pinaceae
Common names: Fraser fir, Fraser’s fir, she balsam, southern balsam, southern balsam fir.
Synonyms: Abies fraseri (Pursh) Lindley, Pinus fraseri Pursh.
Genus: Abies

Habitat:-  South-Eastern N. America – Virginia and West Virginia to North Carolina and Tennessee.   Mountains, often forming forests of considerable extent at elevations of 1200 – 1800 metres.Woodland Garden; Canopy;

High elevations, generally above 1,500 meters. Seedlings may occur widely scattered throughout this area, but best canopy dominant stands were found at uppermost elevations on the windward slopes. There the fir formed nearly pure stands although tree height was less than on more protected slopes. This tree has been devastated by the exotic balsam woolly adelgid (Adelges piceae), and which habitats will continue to support Fraser fir in the future, if any, are not known.

Description:-
This medium sized Perennial evergreen conifer can grow to excess of 20 meters in height (Collingwood and Brush,1964), although usually to ~15 m. in the natural areas of the Park. Stupka (1964) recorded a specimen 15.3 meters tall and 2.4 meters in circumference (~77 cm diameter at breast height) from the summit of Mt. LeConte.
….
Fraser fir bark is smooth gray on mature trees, although usually covered with bryophytes and lichens. Some older trees have scaling near the base of the trunk. The branches are all generally ascending in younger trees. The foliage is a blunt or notched, flat needle about 1 to 1.5 cm long. The leaves are very fragrant, shiny dark green above and silvery below.

Fruit is a medium sized, rounded cone to 6 cm long, held erect on uppermost branches. Cones have irregular tipped bracts exerted from the cone scales and obscuring a portion of the cone surface. The cone scales break off from the central axis in the fall.

It is the only fir endemic to the southern Appalachian Mountains. The largest tree on record measures almost 86 cm (34 in) in d.b.h., 26.5 m (87 ft) tall, and has a crown spread of 15.8 m (52 ft). Because of the high elevation at which Fraser fir grows, its primary value is for watershed protection and scenic attraction.

It is hardy to zone 4 and is frost tender. It is in leaf all year, in flower in May, and the seeds ripen from September to October. The flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant) and are pollinated by Wind.

You may click to learn botanical detail of She Balsam :http://www.wildwnc.org/education/trees/fraser-fir-abies-fraseri-pursh-poir-pinaceae-pine-family

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay soil. The plant prefers acid and neutral soils. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil. The plant is not wind tolerant.

Cultivation:-
Prefers a good moist but not water-logged soil. Grows well in heavy clay soils. Very shade tolerant, especially when young but growth is slower in dense shade. Intolerant of atmospheric pollution. Prefers slightly acid conditions down to a pH of about5. Prefers growing on a north-facing slope. A shallow-rooted plant, making it vulnerable to high winds. A fast-growing but short-lived species. Trees are very cold hardy but are often excited into premature growth in mild winters and this new growth is susceptible to damage by late frosts. No other member of this genus has proved to be of as little value, or so short-lived as this species; there is scarcely a good tree in the country, though it is attractive when young. Usually short-lived in cultivation, though bearing its interesting cones whilst still young. Young trees can be handsome and vigorous, one grew 120cm in two years, but growth soon slows. Trees are known to have lived more than 60 years. Trees should be planted into their permanent positions when they are quite small, between 30 and 90cm in height. Larger trees will check badly and hardly put on any growth for several years. This also badly affects root development and wind resistance. Trees have a thin bark and are therefore susceptible to forest fires . This species is closely related to A. balsamea and is seen as no moer than a form of that species by some botanists. There are some named forms selected for their ornamental value. Trees can produce cones when only 2 metres tall. Plants are strongly outbreeding, self-fertilized seed usually grows poorly. They hybridize freely with other members of this genus. The cones break up on the tree and if seed is required it should be harvested before the cones break up in early autumn.

Propagation:-
Seed – sow early February in a greenhouse or outdoors in March . Germination is often poor, usually taking about 6 – 8 weeks . Stratification is said to produce a more even germination so it is probably best to sow the seed in a cold frame as soon as it is ripe in the autumn . The seed remains viable for up to 5 years if it is well stored. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on for at least their first winter in pots. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Alternatively, if you have sufficient seed, it is possible to sow in an outdoor seedbed. One report says that it is best to grow the seedlings on in the shade at a density of about 550 plants per square metre whilst another report says that they are best grown on in a sunny position. Trees often self-layer in the wild, so this might be a means of increasing named varieties in cultivation.

Cultivars:-
There are many named forms for this species, but these have been developed for their ornamental value and not for their other uses. Unless you particularly require the special characteristics of any of these cultivars, we would generally recommend that you grow the natural species for its useful properties. We have, therefore, not listed the cultivars in this database.
Medicinal Action and Uses:-

Analgesic; Antiscorbutic; Antiseptic; Diuretic; Poultice; Stimulant; Tonic; VD.

The following uses are for the closely related A. balsamea. Since this species also has blisters of resin in the bark, the uses quite probably also apply here. The resin obtained from the balsam fir has been used throughout the world and is a very effective antiseptic and healing agent. It is used as a healing and analgesic protective covering for burns, bruises, wounds and sores. It is also used to treat sore nipples and is said to be one of the best curatives for a sore throat. The buds, resin, and/or sap are used in folk remedies for treating cancers, corns, and warts. The resin is also antiscorbutic, diaphoretic, diuretic, stimulant and tonic. It is used internally in propriety mixtures to treat coughs and diarrhoea, though taken in excess it is purgative. A warm liquid of the gummy sap was drunk as a treatment for gonorrhoea. A tea made from the leaves is antiscorbutic. It is used in the treatment of coughs, colds and fevers. The leaves and young shoots are best harvested in the spring and dried for later use. This plant was widely used medicinally by various North American Indian tribes. The resin was used as an antiseptic healing agent applied externally to wounds, sores, bites etc., it was used as an inhalant to treat headaches and was also taken internally to treat colds, sore throats and various other complaints.

Other Uses
Adhesive; Microscope; Repellent; Resin; Stuffing; Wood.

Wood – light, soft, coarse grained, not strong. It is occasionally manufactured into lumber. The following uses are for the closely related A. balsamea. Since this species also has blisters of resin in the bark, the uses quite probably also apply here. The balsamic resin ‘Balm of Gilead’ or ‘Canada Balsam’ according to other reports is obtained during July and August from blisters in the bark or by cutting pockets in the wood. Another report says that it is a turpentine. It is used medicinally, also in the manufacture of glues, candles and as a cement for microscopes and slides – it has a high refractive index resembling that of glass. The average yield is about 8 – 10 oz per tree. The resin is also a fixative in soaps and perfumery. Leaves are a stuffing material for pillows etc – they impart a pleasant scent[46, 61] and also repel moths

Canopy tents are not only meant for taking rest in the outdoors and for partying, but are also concerned with the protection of your valuable outdoor assets. However, there are a number of varieties of canopies and one has the opportunity to choose from hundreds of canopy tents that are easily available at retail shops and online.

Usually all the canopies are attractive and sturdy. They serve as cover, shade and shelter for your patio, greenhouse, party, flea market, parking space, nursery, plants, flowers, camping area, garden area, pet, storage, deck, pool, barbeque, dog kennel, outdoor event or construction area.

These fancy and multi-functional canopies can also be used as a free-standing carport, dock house, gazebo, garage and virtually any other cover. These canopy tents are water-resistant, fire-retardant, and UV protected. Most of the outdoor canopy tents are portable.

A portable outdoor canopy tent is the one which can be carried from one place to another without much effort. Usually these canopies are foldable. The portable canopies are basically tents without sides, just a top supported by poles. These canopies are very simple to set up, equipped with trouble-free storage facilities, have innovative as well as attractive designs, and steel field spikes for setting them up.

Some of the very popular and quality outdoor canopy tents are: Majestic, Hexagon, Star Shade, Star Twin, KD Kanopy, Caravan 10 x 10 Aluminum Canopy Package Deal, Caravan 10 x 10 Alum shade Canopy Package Deal, and the Caravan 10 x 10 Display Shade Canopy.

Wow…like 99% of the population, I too have lost track of how quickly the past couple weeks have flown by. Thanksgiving comes, and it seems the next day you are a week away from Christmas! I’m wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I’d like to share below pictures from what has become a highlight of my year: Friendship Thanksgiving. Every year, begining 4 years ago, my husband and I host a Thanksgiving meal for all our friends. It has started to fall on the sunday following Thanksgiving, allowing friends to spend the holiday with family, and still make our annual party. We have always strived to have an outdoor feast, cold weather and all! Every year we have been fortunate enough to have great weather, and our friends come bundled for a festive outdoor meal.

The OCDiva in me, focus’ on the look of the table every year. If you are like me, you want it to be spectacular. This year I wanted it to be a bit understated, and simple. Here you can see we did simple colors in browns and greens. I scoured discount stores until I found a box of the ornate pears for $15 and the laterns I have collected over the years. I took a piece of wood from our woodpile, and my husband cut it into rounds which we wrote names on in permanent marker, and used as name placards for the table. we strung simple white christmas lights over the table in a canopy, and added lots of white candles down the middle of the table. Lastly, every year we leave a simple ornament on everyone’s plate as a reminder of our friendship.

Name placards made of cut wood!

Simple. Easy. No stress. I did not have towering centerpieces, expensive name plates and napkin holders. I did not have supper fancy dishes, simply a set that matched and was on discount last year.

For your parties coming up, be it Christmas or New Years, remember that simple is elegant, tasteful, and easy on the budget. Trying to find the perfect centerpiece items, napkin rings, etc, can add up quickly. And if purchasing items, try to buy lasting paterns so they can be used year after year. In this case I have all brown napkins and placemats that I purchased three years ago. Each year we use the brown, and I switch it up with either a burnt orange table cloth, or green, as we did this year. But my brown can be used with bright green for summer parties and blue for spring parties. It can be paired with yellow or orange for fall and winter parties, and in this case the green, felt festive and autumnal. The same goes with plates: simple white in this case, and I’ll never worry about matching plates.

So that is a small update from the OCDiva! My family and I pray you have a safe and blessed Christmas and New Year and worry free party planning!

Don’t Agonize, Organize.
