MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Saturday were searching for a man who allegedly tried to kidnap a 17-year-old girl as she walked to school in Moreno Valley.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies said in a department statement that the girl reported the April 11, incident to a Canyon Springs High School resource officer on Friday afternoon.

The investigation revealed that the teen was walking home about 4 p.m. Thursday on Ironwood Avenue near Pigeon Pass Road when a vehicle with several men approached.

“The suspect accosted the juvenile in an attempt to pull her into the vehicle. When the juvenile managed to free herself, the suspect and vehicle fled the area,” the statement said.

The suspect was described by authorities as a black male adult between the age of 18 and 20. He is 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs 145 pounds.

He was last seen wearing a dark-sleeve shirt, tan shorts, and black shoes.

The suspect vehicle is a 2000-2005 white Honda Civic with peeling tinted windows.

Authorities said the incident remains under investigation and asked that anyone with additional information call the Moreno Valley Police Department at (951) 486-6700 or (951) 776-1099.

MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — An 18-year-old Moreno Valley student was arrested Monday for allegedly threatening to shoot one of his teachers.

Fernando Hernandez, who attends Canyon Springs High School, was taken into custody for making terrorist threats and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

Hernandez reportedly slipped his teacher a note that said he wanted to shoot her, which prompted the victim to contact authorities, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

“It was a note that contained a very specific statement about a desire to shoot this particular teacher,” Chief Joel Ontiveros said. “The student was apparently upset with life and felt the need to express his angst, apparently, in this manner.”

(credit: RIverside County Sheriff’s Department)

Deputies then searched Hernandez’s home for weapons and found a bolt-action rifle and a small amount of ammunition.

“The rifle was legally purchased and secured with a trigger lock,” Sgt. Rasmussen said.

The student did not have a history of trouble at the school, according to Superintendent Dr. Judy White.

School officials sent out an alert to parents detailing the arrest and giving them information regarding extra security on campus Tuesday.

The Moreno Valley Police Department is asking anyone with additional information about this case to contact Sergeant Rasmussen at (951) 486-6700.

It seems Obama has a pattern of making others pay for his presidency. I’ve reported about 3 or 4 instances where Obama and his campaign have left town with a bill and refuse to pay. This is another one of those stories.

LAS VEGAS — President Barack Obama is set to hold a campaign rally at Canyon Springs High School in North Las Vegas on Wednesday, his first visit to Southern Nevada sinceNevada Journal revealed that his campaign left taxpayers here on the hook for the costs of events at local public schools.

Obama’s campaign, Obama for America (OFA), left the Clark County School District with nearly $25,000 in unpaid bills from two rallies at Bonanza and Coronado high schools in 2008.

Neither CCSD nor the Obama campaign would confirm for Nevada Journal the campaign’s plans to pay for Wednesday’s event.

In 2008, CCSD billed the Obama campaign $53,116.12 for the Bonanza and Coronado rallies. Obama for America originally paid $28,484.40 of the bill, but left $24,631.72 unpaid.

That remainder was not paid until June 2012, following multiple Nevada Journal inquiries. The bill was for 500 hours of school police officer overtime, providing extra security for the rallies.

As Nevada Journalreported in July, Aoife McCarthy, press secretary for OFA’s Nevada organization, said she didn’t know why the campaign waited four years to pay the 2008 bill.

Contacted anew, McCarthy couldn’t confirm by press time if OFA had received an invoice from CCSD for the Canyon Springs rally Wednesday.

Obama’s campaign isn’t the only one hosting rallies at CCSD schools. Last week, presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan held a rally at Palo Verde High School, and on July 27, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., campaigned on behalf of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney at C.C Ronnow Elementary School.

Mason Harrison, a spokesman for the Romney campaign’s Nevada organization, told Nevada Journal the Romney campaign paid for both the Rubio and Ryan events, and said the campaign usually pays for all events ahead of time.

That’s the difference. Romney is responsible and pays for his event. Obama is irresponsible and expects others to pay!

The Obama campaign has been in the news several times for reportedly not reimbursing cities or other public entities for the costs of its events. In February, Obama held a fundraising breakfast in Newport Beach, Calif., and the city sent the Obama campaign a $35,043 invoice to cover extra security costs incurred by the city.

For the past three months, Obama has spent more money than his campaign brought in. Sound familiar?

The bill was due June 9, and when Newport Beach received no payment, it sent the campaign a past-due notice.

The Obama campaign directed the city to the Democratic National Committee, which then passed Newport Beach on to the Secret Service, according to Mary Locey, the city’s public information officer.

The Secret Service informed Newport Beach it’s not responsible for payments, so as of Aug. 21, six months after the fundraising breakfast, Newport Beach taxpayers are picking up the tab.

Since 1999, Dayna and I have had a PlayStation in one form or another in the house and our favorite

Since 1999, Dayna and I have had a PlayStation in one form or another in the house and our favorite (and pretty much only) video game was Crash Bandicoot. When we were bored, or wanted to think and talk things out, Crash Team Racing went on the television and we would play for a couple of hours. Why am I thinking about that today you may ask?

Today is the absolute end. The last day of school for summer and it was today when we were supposed to make our pilgrimage two hundred miles to have lunch at one of our favorite restaurants. The trip alone would have been a good thing because it would give us time to just relax and get away for awhile. Lunch is like the icing on the cake. Tonight, we would probably go through all the stuff that came home from school, put it away, and play some Crash Bandicoot while thinking about this years trip.

We didn’t go anywhere last year because of money problems but I figured last October, when I bought a new grill, we could stay home more, grill out and have the money for our trip this summer. This summers trip was going to take us to Oregon by way of Montana. Our son was supposed to be in Montana looking around in May and Dayna was going to try and persuade him to move the trip to June so we could meet up, visit, then go on to Oregon.

When Dayna passed away last October, it became not only emotionally unbearable but it also set off a chain of events like nothing I’ve ever dealt with before. School districts, insurance companies, IRS, the mortgage company, the State, funeral home, and a host of other things. The past eight months have been full of emptiness including promises, feelings, and excuses. But, life goes on and I’ve been told that more times than not.

Today was supposed to be a good day and the start of a couple months of sleeping late, traveling, cooking out on the grill and having our morning coffee on the patio. We would have been able to do that because over the winter we were going to finish the patio by taking off the paint on the concrete (old people like to do that I guess), nurturing the grass plugs Dayna planted, painting the entry way and putting in a new kitchen floor. Once that was done, we were then ready to hit the road again.

What did today bring as opposed to what we usually do? Let’s see, five phone calls from the mortgage broker, three from one of the kids, one from the Democratic Party, one from a friend of ours making sure I haven’t killed myself, mail for someone who uses my address but doesn’t live here and stuffed peppers from a box for dinner. Quite a contrast from what we usually do isn’t it?

Tonight the house is dark except for the floor lamp in the office. The television is on with reruns of King of Queens, all the email has been answered and the business of the week is finished. The bills are paid for the month, and I had Burger King for lunch instead of driving two hundred miles. I’ll probably stay up til around four in the morning, take some pain pills (I have to good stuff), think about Dayna a lot and finally, go to bed only to get up and start all over again.

I figure I’ll smile when it’s time to smile and today is not the time. When is that going to happen again? That’s probably one of the hottest questions today because I don’t even smile when I do my absolute favorite thing. It’s become almost a chore to get behind the wheel of Dayna’s Jeep and it’s no better getting behind the wheel of the Gold Durango. A few people told me that I should sell both of them and get something else. With a snicker I say that with gas prices around four dollars a gallon, who’s going to buy two SUV’s? It’s cheaper to leave the Jeep in the garage and the Dodge in the driveway but I try to run them at least every other day for awhile.

I find it funny that in the middle of all this funk, people still expect me to produce for them so they don’t have to do anything. These are the people who have “lives” and expect to be spoon fed. Guess that’s the face and the voice of the young today which saddens me. I remember, even at my sickest, I still went into the classroom and did my job. We figured that when Dayna went into the hospital, she’d been having a heart attack all day and what was she doing all day? She was working too which probably was the main reason why they couldn’t stop the heart attack.

I guess when Dayna and I wanted something, we were unreasonable while when everyone else wanted the same thing, it was plausible. Sometimes, I wish I never got rid of that PlayStation because Crash Bandicoot made more sense than some of the people I deal with. Maybe breakfast at the bar tomorrow morning will make everything better and I won’t think about Crash anymore.

I hope that some of you will eventually read this and I want to apologize for not writing this sooner. My family received the memory book on your teacher last week and I’ve spent most of the week looking through all the messages you wrote in condolence for your teacher and my family. I want you to know just how touched I am by reading your thoughts and how honored I am that you thought so much of Ms. Finn.

She told me much about you and loved when she saw the “light bulb” go off when you got something in class. She also told me good as well as bad things about you but I figured that kids are kids. There were many of you she wanted to adopt and bring home with her and she just adored the hugs she got in the halls from you. I hope that through all this you’ve learned one thing and remember it always because it’s what Ms. Finn and I lived by.

If you have a passion for something, regardless of what it is, follow it as far as you can. Most of you knew that she loved science and spent a lot of time not only teaching science, but researching. I’m sure she is looking at all of you right now, hoping that you move forward in this world despite some of the limitations you have. Pick up the mantle she left and push yourselves with knowledge while doing the best you can do because nobody can ask any more from you.

Be proud of your achievements and take your losses gracefully. At the end of the day, you can hit the pillow knowing you’ve done your best and move forward. Someone told me once that if you reach for the stars, you’ll at least fly with the birds. Ms. Finn and I have done some incredible things in our careers without the knowledge in the subject we took on. Most of that came from learning as we went along. Back in the old days that was called “on the job training.”

Don’t be afraid to fail because even if you do, everyone knows that you at least tried. There are some out there that are so paralyzed, they won’t do anything to help another or further their knowledge. No person can take knowledge away from you and that’s one thing I smile about when I think of Ms. Finn.

Try and make your situation a better one and by doing that, you can rest assured others will follow your lead. Again, thank you on behalf of my entire family for your condolences, well wishes, thoughts and prayers toward a great science teacher.

NOTE: (This is a reprint from the old blog that was ordered down by a Las Vegas Judge. I believe this piece is important enough that it will be reprinted here today.)
_______________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Dayna:

I need to tell you that I lied to you last year. Yes, not too often I do this but I knew if I didn’t, the trip back east wouldn’t have happened. I told you that I had some business back east and I was sick of hearing how the kids would take care of us if we moved back east. Both were a lie. I could have taken care of business over the phone and I think you already knew about the moving part. When the subject was brought up, information was sparse so a decision couldn’t be made. Remembering how the move to Las Vegas was, the caution lights came up fast as to not trying to figure things out over the Internet.

I lied to you because I saw you after you hung up the phone. You just looked off into space and took an extra trip into the kitchen. Certainly I knew what you were doing and sometimes, that’s why there was an extra massage on Saturday morning. The trip in 2007 was a good one for you but you weren’t going to go back there even after I begged you to fly and rent a car. You gave me the excuse as to how uncomfortable it was for you to fly. So, I lied to make sure you made it back east by saying I had business.

It was a wonderful trip, probably one of the best one’s I’ve ever taken. I always loved seeing the look on your face when you experienced new things. The look on your face as you saw all the corn and made jokes about “children of the corn” were priceless. Crossing the Mississippi that far north around Rock Island was an experience that I saw in your eyes. When the GPS took us into south Chicago, you were sure it was possessed and even the miserable weather didn’t seem to be that difficult to put up with. We just rolled up the windows on the Jeep and turned on the AC.

The look on your face when you drove the majority of the western states was almost priceless. When I got into a car, it was usually the driver seat but this time, you got into the seat in Las Vegas and drove a very long way, almost to Denver on the first leg of the trip. The GPS telling us about Feet Morgan (yes, that’s what the GPS told us), made us laugh almost uncontrollably, just like some of our conversations in bed. The entire trip brought a smile to my face because I knew you were excited, even though you didn’t want to let on.

The surprise to a lot of people was that the car radio was almost never on. I remember it only being on for ten minutes because it looked like a storm was brewing. The smile on your face when you experienced some pretty good food, the look on your face when you saw the kids, and then the falls. Saddened me to no end that my health was crapping out because my legs swelled up to the point where I could barely keep my pants from ripping.

I lied to you about the necessity of the trip back east because I knew that was the only way you would go. To me, it didn’t matter how much money it cost because it made you happy. There was only one time in seventeen years that I had to say no and I heard about it for a few years. The trip back east was for you and you alone. There was no afterthought because I had thought it out days before, even down to how it would be done. The car was a mess when we got home and I prepared for that. The only thing I didn’t plan for was the windshield but a quick call to the glass company took care of that.

I know you loved that trip regardless of how I felt because the friends have been telling me that for over a year. It made me feel good when they told me that she said “nobody but Kevin would have done that.” I wouldn’t have had it any other way except for the lying because if I told you why the trip, you would have tried to talk me out of it. That’s just the way you were.

The Obama administration exercises its first U.N. Security Council veto to kill an Arab-backed resolution calling West Bank settlements ‘illegal.’ The vote was seen by both Israelis and Palestinians as a crucial test of U.S. loyalty.

Reporting from Jerusalem —

Drawing ire from Palestinians and Arab nations, the Obama administration exercised its U.N. Security Council veto power for the first time Friday to kill a resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

The Arab-backed resolution called Israel’s settlements “illegal” and a major obstacle to Mideast peace talks.

Though the resolution largely echoed long-standing criticism by the U.S. and international leaders about Israel’s construction on land acquired during the 1967 Mideast war, the Obama administration said the U.N. is not the proper forum, and the dispute should be handled during peace talks. U.S.-brokered negotiations broke down last fall over Palestinian protests about settlement expansion.

The vote was seen by Israelis and Palestinians as a crucial test of American loyalty. After two bumpy years between Israel’s right-wing government and the Obama administration, Israelis were hoping for reassurances that it would protect their interests, as past presidents have done. Most recently Israelis accused Obama of “abandoning” his allies in the region, such as deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Palestinians regarded the vote as a measure of Obama’s ability and willingness to act as an unbiased intermediary in Mideast peace talks and stand up to Israeli pressure.

Palestinian Authority officials said Friday that the U.S. veto exposed American hypocrisy in its past promises, noting that Obama has been calling for Israel to halt its settlement expansion since he took office.

Faced with a choice that was certain to alienate one side or the other, the Obama administration worked frantically in recent days to convince Palestinians to withdraw the resolution. Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbasand offered to substitute the resolution with a nonbinding statement from the council’s presidency.

Israeli leaders signaled that they would accept the nonbinding statement, but Palestinians dismissed the idea. Egypt’s U.N. Ambassador Maged Abdelaziz told reporters in New York that the offer was “too little, too late.”

At a final meeting Friday in Ramallah, Palestinian leaders decided to proceed with the resolution, despite U.S. pressure. Abbas aide Yasser Abed Rabbo declined to comment on whether the U.S. threatened to retaliate against the Palestinian Authority by withholding funds.

An abstention by the U.S. would have infuriated Israelis, who are feeling increasingly insecure because of the fall of the Egyptian government and unrest across the Middle East. Such a vote would also have likely cost Obama political capital at home. Numerous lawmakers from both parties called upon Obama to support Israel by vetoing the resolution.

The U.N. vote is the latest sign that Palestinians are shifting away from relying on U.S.-sponsored peace talks and moving toward a new campaign to secure international recognition for statehood, even without an agreement with Israel.

In recent months, a half-dozen South American countries have joined a growing list of nations formally recognizing a Palestinian state.

Friday’s resolution was seen by some as a dry-run for a possible September effort to seek U.N. recognition of statehood.

Israelis vow to block any such unilateral moves by Palestinians.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing renewed pressure to demonstrate progress on the Palestinian issue, particularly after the loss of Mubarak raised fresh questions about Israel’s landmark 1979 peace treaty with Egypt.

Some say Israel should move quickly to pursue peace deals with Syria and the Palestinians to offset what might evolve into a less stable relationship with Egypt.

So far, Netanyahu’s right-wing government has showed no signs of backing away from settlement expansion or imposing a freeze on new construction.

Jerusalem officials are expected to consider next week a proposal to build another 120 housing units on land seized in 1967.

Israel’s settlements have been deemed illegal by the U.N., the International Court of Justice and most Western nations. In the 1980s, the White House began avoiding the term “illegal” in public statements, preferring words such as “illegitimate” or “unhelpful.”

In 1979, under President Carter, the U.S. abstained from a vote on U.N. Security Council Resolution 446, which was approved. The resolution said Israeli settlements had “no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.”

Obama’s actions in the UN are akin to the US groveling at Abbas’ feet. Obama’s lame actions put the US and Israel in very lame light.

Obama’s lame request to Abbas, again making America look like it’s groveling, to not bring the vote up.

The White House’s ‘outrageous’ statement on Israel

Gary Ackerman hosted a meeting between Israeli officials and defense firm Xenonics, in which he had invested $14,000 borrowed from top shareholder of Xenonics (logo below).

UPDATE 12:34 P.M.: I spoke with Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.) by phone a few minutes ago. He was quite displeased with recent events, observing that “the Palestinians think they have the PR wind at their backs. They see the White House as more malleable and are taking advantage.” He gave some blunt advice, telling the White House to show some “gumption” in turning back the Palestinian demands. He labels the Palestinians’ gambit as an example of “the tail wagging a very flea-bitten dog.”

In less colorful terms, N.Y. Democratic Reps. Nita Lowey and Anthony Weiner are also criticizing the White House.

Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) also is blasting the White House: “The Arabs are using the UN to distract the world from the real obstacle to peace in the Middle East: the Palestinians. They have done nothing to prepare their people for peace and refuse to come to the negotiating table, even after Israel made historic concessions on settlements. The U.S. must not fall prey to this cynical tactic and allow the Arabs to continue avoiding negotiations. I call on the Obama Administration to veto any resolutions at the UN and instead push the Palestinians back to negotiations, where they belong.”

Congresswoman Shelley Berkeley during a rally for Sen.
Leaders in the Jewish community are using the words “outrageous” and “alarmed” with regard to the White House’s U.N. maneuvering. The chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs committee has put out a statement blasting the administration. It reads in part:

Support for this anti-Israel statement is a major concession to enemies of the Jewish State and other free democracies. It telegraphs that the U.S. can be bullied into abandoning critical democratic allies and core U.S. principles. . . .

Offering to criticize our closest ally at the UN isn’t leadership, it’s unacceptable. Pretending that criticism of Israel is OK if it comes in a ‘Presidential Statement’ instead of a resolution isn’t leadership, it’s unacceptable. Twisting and turning and tying yourself in knots to avoid using our veto to defend our allies and interests isn’t leadership, it’s unacceptable.

As I receive them, I will pass along statements being issued from both Democrats and Republicans on the Hill.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is meeting with senators in a prearranged get-together. The topic is Egypt, but this will surely come up.

The reaction from Democrats and Republicans is remarkably similar: What in the world was the White House thinking?

Obama calls Abbas in bid to prevent UN vote on settlements

U.S. working to prevent vote from taking place at Security Council on Friday, but makes clear it will veto resolution should it come to vote; senior UN diplomat says U.S. not only Security Council member against the vote.

By Natasha Mozgovaya,	Shlomo Shamir and News Agencies

Published 21:53 17.02.11

U.S. President Barack Obama called Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday in an attempt to prevent the impending vote on a United Nations resolution condemning Israeli settlements.

The Palestinian Authority and other Arab nations have pushed that the UN Security Council will vote on the resolution on Friday, and Washington has implored the PA to withdraw the proposal, but so far to no avail.

The U.S. has made it clear that it will veto the resolution should it come to a vote, and it would mark the first time the United States has used its veto power since Barack Obama assumed the presidency.

The point of the resolution, foreign diplomats say, is to highlight Washington’s isolated position on the Security Council, show the Palestinian population that the Palestinian Authority is taking action, and to pressure Israel and the United States on the settlement issue.

The United Nations Security Council at the UN headquarters in New York on April 16, 2010.

Security Council members have carried out unofficial discussions on Thursday evening ahead of Friday’s vote. UN sources told Haaretz that according to the discussions it seems that the United States is not the only member that is against carrying out the vote.

A senior diplomat said that the U.S. isn’t alone in its reservations regarding the vote, and that the five permanent council members do not like votes which force a rift between the permanent members of the Security Council.

The diplomat said that the general feeling that comes from the unofficial discussions between member states it that they would rather go for a move that would not create conflict in the Security Council.

One of the attempts by the U.S. to thwart the vote was to offer a compromise to the Palestinians, that instead of a resolution condemning Israel, the U.S. would support a presidential statement that would call the settlement activity illegitimate, which is not legally binding as a UN Security Council resolution.

Intensive U.S. diplomatic efforts to revive direct peace talks between Abbas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu collapsed last year over settlement construction.

Israel has repeatedly called for a resumption of direct negotiations with the Palestinians. But the Palestinians have refused to return to the negotiating table until Israel first agrees to renew its 10-month freeze on West Bank settlement building.
