It was in September of this year when we first met. I was packing up from a long day at work when a woman who was obviously Filipino came up to me, asking why there was a Filipino flag outside the Arena Civica in downtown Milan.

I explained that we were there for the Homeless World Cup, and that there was a Filipino contingent to this international football game for homeless people. We even came out the best in Asia, I proudly told her.

“Filipinos playing calcio, here in Milan?” she asked excitedly.

I told her the story of how the program came about and how my husband and I came to be involved, and she, in turn, asked how she and her family could help. After making plans for the next few days, we parted ways.

The following day, Joice came as she had promised. This time, she brought along her husband, Richard, and their three children. They wanted to meet the players and the other Filipinos from Milan who had skipped work to support our very own Team Philippines. They wanted to know what else they could do to help; they excitedly planned for things they would buy to give to the team before our flight to Manila. They seemed very sincere with their offers of support, and after sharing some personal stories with each other, we knew that these folks were the real deal.

A few days later, the boys from Team Philippines went home with bags of goodies from Joice and Richard and other members of the Filipino community in Milan.There was food and wine, there were brand-new clothes; there was a whole lot of generosity and care.

Fast-forward to three months later, in December. I received a call from Joice, saying that Richard would be in the Philippines for his birthday and asking if my husband, Paul, and I would head out to Tarlac to be part of a little celebration there. Although Paul and I had never been to Tarlac before and didn’t have the slightest clue about how to get there, we accepted the invitation because we knew that this was going to be a rare event.

We asked what we needed to prepare for the trip. “We’ll take care of everything,” Joice replied. “The most important thing is for the kids to know that we have visitors coming from Manila. They will be very excited!”

The “kids”, it turned out, were students of Capas West Elementary School and O’ Donnell High School in Capas, Tarlac. They were beneficiaries of the Richard Gabriel and Josephine Sonza Gabriel Foundation, an organization that Richard and Joice established a few years ago to provide financial assistance to poor but deserving students. Aside from providing free tuition, the foundation also conducted feeding programs and gave relief goods during times of calamity.

This year, the Gabriels were sending 66 students to school, all out of their hard-earned money from working as artisans in Milan, Italy.

Sixty-six students. Sixty-six young men and women who will soon be supporting sixty-six families. Sixty-six families who could get a shot at a better life because of a young couple who believed so much in the value of education that they were willing to forgo a much more comfortable life in order to help and empower others.

Having heard a bit of the lives of Richard and Joice, I knew that they didn’t come from wealthy families. In fact, the reason they left the country was because of their own desire to give their families a better life. And yet here they were, 20 years after leaving home, giving so much of what was now rightfully theirs to people they barely knew.

According to Jewish and Christian tradition, the Archangel Gabriel was the messenger whom God had sent to Zachary and to the Virgin Mary about the forthcoming births of their respective children. Gabriel’s name means “Strength of God”, and his role was that of a communicator and a mediator between Heaven and Earth.

The Gabriels I know, Richard and Joice Gabriel, are not celestial beings–but they could very well be angels here on Earth. Now living in a place much higher than where they were born, they continue to send messages of hope, love, and empowerment to those who are still trapped in lowly lives. And they do so not for power or glory or fame, but for their sheer desire to raise people up so that more children will be saved from poverty, from ignorance, from despair.

The Gabriels I know have given so many people so much strength. They have inspired me, too, to continue my humble work so that the message of hope will reach more people around the world.

Como foi postado anteriormente: devido ao grande número de informaçõe scontidas num só post, ele teve que ser dividido em 2 partes, e aqui está a segunda!

Como nós já tinhamos falado sobre o estilo e a história da banda,  passemos agora para a análise das letras da banda (que complexo isso né!! xD). Bem, se formos notar, a maioria das letras falam sobre sentimentos, na sua maioria sobre amor, conflitos internos, mágoas e desencontros da vida, mas grande parte das letras é recheada de uma melancolia diferente de qualquer outra já vista.. na mesma música, enquanto um verso diz, por exemplo, “A depressão está escondida na rotina de cada um”, ele é seguido por “Mas quero continuar até que tudo isso se perca, mesmo que nunca desapareça…” o que dá uma sensação de coragem e superação em toda e qualquer situação adversa à que se esteja sendo submetido (Trecho da música Song Of Blue). As letras mostram os 2 lados dos sentimentos com contrapontos e discernimento: enquanto é relatada uma situação triste ou duvidosa nos primeiros versos, nas estrofes seguintes há uma motivação para se impôr e superar aquilo com muita alegria e de uma forma super positiva (um outro exemplo é Haruka Kanata.. acho que foi por isso que escolheram essa música pro anime..). Parece idota pra quem ler isso, mas analisando as letras, você entenderá o que eu quero dizer.

Saindo das letras, e passando pra outro ponto muito legal, vale falar também da arte da banda, isto é, as capas, gráficos e desenhos os quais são relacionados à Ajikan. Yusuke Nakamura – esse é o cara responsável por essa associação. Em 25 de novembro de 2002 (olha! meu aniversário!), quando lançaram o mini-álbum Hokai Amplifier, eles resolveram chamar Nakamura, que é radialista (tem uma rádio na internet inclusive), artista gráfico e música para desenhar a capa desse cd. Desde então, ele é quem faz as arter gráficas da banda. O trabalho do cara é realmente muito bonito, vale a pena dar uma conferida. Seguem aqui mais algumas capas que Nakamura fez pra banda:

• Partimos de que el dibujo ya está entintado y de que tenemos la intención de colorearlo utilizando distintas capas. El dibujo lo guardamos en formato .xcf, que es el propio de Gimp. Así pierde menos calidad, como me suele recordar mi hermano.
• Abrimos Ventanas > Diálogos empotrables > Capas.
• La única capa que aparece es la de “Fondo”. Seleccionamos la capa “Fondo” con el botón derecho y elegimos la opción Duplicar la capa.
• Seleccionamos la capa “Fondo” y pulsamos Suprimir para dejar un fondo blanco.



• Podemos cambiar el nombre de la “Copia del Fondo” para llamarla “Contorno”, ya que será el contorno del dibujo, bajo el que crearemos las capas de color. El nombre se cambia pulsando en la capa con el botón derecho y eligiendo Editar atributos de capa.



• Con la capa “Contorno” elegida, vamos a eliminar la textura del papel y el resto de suciedad gris. Ve al menú Colores > Brillo y contraste y ajusta los valores de brillo y de contraste. Echa un ojo para que no se pierdan muchos detalles.



• Selecciona la capa “Contorno” con el botón derecho y elige Añadir canal alfa.
• Justo al lado de la pestaña del diálogo de “Capas” está el diálogo de “Canales”. Seleccionamos todos los canales y, pulsando en ellos con el botón derecho, elegimos Canal a selección. Pulsamos Suprimir, con lo que borraremos bien el fondo y las líneas del contorno quedarán bastante finas. Deseleccionamos pulsando Mayúsculas + Control + A.




El dibujo ha quedado con líneas más finas.

• Vamos a hacer que las líneas se vuelvan a ver oscuras. Primero elegimos la capa del contorno y marcamos la casilla Bloquear el canal alfa.



• Con un pincel bien gordo coloreamos de negro las líneas – gracias a que hemos bloqueado el canal alfa se colorea sólo ese contorno.

O meu namorado regressou recentemente de São Paulo e, na mala, trazia, entre outras coisas [os meus novos sapatinhos Arezzo terão um post em breve], as edições de Outubro da Elle e da Vogue brasileiras. Tão, tão diferentes das nossas homólogas portuguesas.

Não sei precisar quando começou a minha admiração pela moda made in Brazil, mas há que reconhecer que a indústria de moda tem um peso no Brasil que não tem aqui em Portugal. Poderia fazer toda uma contextualização histórica e económica sobre o assunto, no entanto deixo um conselho: peguem numa Vogue e Elle brasileiras e reparem no orgulho do que se faz por lá.

My boyfriend has just returned from São Paulo and, among a few other things [I'll post my new Arezzo shoes soon], he bought me Brazilian Elle and Vogue’s October issues and they’re soooooo much better than portuguese magazines.

I can’t tell you when I start loving brazilian fashion but we got to recognize its importance to Brazil’s economy and society. I could say a lot of things about this subject but I rather leave you an advice: try to read Brazil’s Vogue and Elle and see the way they’re proud of their culture.

Horace McCoy, MAS NÃO SE MATA CAVALO? Ninguém merece mais essa falta de referência, não é mesmo? O pior é que a capa original é super conhecida. Adoro o tema “e-books” e toda a polêmica que o cerca. Dava pra ter explorado de umas 748 mil formas diferentes.

A capa é de 09/10/09 e, segundo a própria Ed. Globo, foi uma “referência” à capa da Newsweek mesmo. Uma “cópia declarada”. Isso, lá de onde eu venho, se chama cara-de-pau.
