Ahhhh…. Sunday. The official day to catch up with family, do laundry, clean, and other boring stuffs around the house.

The laundry is drying and my partner is n the kitchen cooking a lovely meal for this evening… so I am catching up online and reading the news.

One story that has caught my attention is this story about how Capita has possibly charged schools £75 million too much over the last ten years.

So my first thought is… how true is the story since the source is one of Capita’s rivals, Bromcom?

Bromcom certainly have reason to be bitter rivals of Capita having been left behind by them. The article did make me laugh a little when it mentioned Bromcom claiming that they ‘had received an inadequate response from Capita’ about this matter and I wondered what Bromcom were expecting to get in response? (‘Oh yeah, we’re so naughty and bow down to you Bromcom… have all our customer base to make up for all our naughtiness!’) I don’t think so somehow lol.

I was however interested in the comments talking about Capita being involved in anti-competitive practices that could involve an investigation from the Office of Fair Trading, and that Bromcom will be having further meetings with OFT later this week.

What’s also interesting to me is not so much that OFT will investigate the claims, but that ‘Bromcom’s complaints appeared to receive support from Becta’.

The next few weeks will prove interesting as Capita does have a very large hold over the School IT sector. However we can only hope that these changes blow the IT Sector wide open for smaller companies able to get a better stance in the market over LEA’s etc.

Anyway… enough mulling over £75 million, a company that has been able to very easily dominate one market, and another bitter company looking for a way to bring them down.

I’m off to chill with my partner, eat dinner, and try to avoid Christmas movies on the TV… it’s only the 6th December ffs, I don’t want to peak too early lol.

Edy avea doar 12 ani , dar era om de cultura cand venea vorba de camasutra si curling . Credea ca curling inseamna lins in cur .
Era o fetiţă emancipată , deci i s-a părut că are în gură ceva putred .
Eh , copiii !

The UK Government recently announced that it is opening up more choice for patients as they will soon be able to register with a GP practice of their choice. This new tool will help patients make that choice and is now available at www.nhs.uk to give people all the information they need to decide which of England’s 8,300 practices is right for them. Capita have delivered the www.nhs.uk website for the NHS.

Similar to the hospital comparison service launched over the summer, the tool will make it easier to find key information in one place, such as opening times and additional facilities offered by the GP practice. Patients will also be able to read other people’s comments about:

      · How easy it is to get an appointment
· How highly they would recommend the GP practice
· How well patients are treated by staff
· If patients felt they were involved in decisions about their care.

UK Health Minister Mike O’Brien said: “As we open up real choice in primary care, it is vital we equip patients with enough information to make the right choice for them.We recently announced that we intend to abolish GP practice boundaries, building on success in extending GP opening hours and establishing almost 100 new GP health centres open 12 hours a day, seven days a week across the country.

“This new tool allows every single GP practice in the country to see the patient’s view on what they are doing well and what needs to be improved. It will help drive up quality across the board, and is another step in ensuring we have a modern NHS which reflects the needs of the patient.”

Dr. Peter Swinyard, Chairman of the Family Doctor Association, said: “The Family Doctor Association supports this initiative and believes that patient feedback on GP services is an effective way of driving up the standards of primary care even further.”

Last month, the Government announced its intention to abolish GP boundaries within the next year, meaning patients will be able to register with a GP practice of their choice. Under current arrangements, GP practices have catchment areas and tend only to accept patients who live within those areas.

Australians are estimated to waste more than $5 billion worth of food and drink every year – and that figure is predicted to rise.

From uneaten takeaway to fresh vegetables that never quite make it to a meal, the waste bill for Australia’s largest city is hitting new highs.

Sydney wastes about $1 billion worth of food per year, and about 60 per cent, or more than $600 million worth, is fresh food, according to Professor Phillip O’Neill from the University of Western Sydney.

“We throw out about $130 million of uneaten takeaways,” he said. “The things that we actually cook, that’s after the fresh food is brought into the house, the value of what we throw out in leftovers is about $180 million.

“The reality is we are throwing out more than we are prepared to pay the farmers in the Sydney basin who grow it.”

“I think by the end of the week our good intentions have been eroded by our busy lives, about the ease of a takeaway or an eat-out,” he said.

The Australia Institute conducted a similar study analysing Australia’s wasteful ways. Dr Richard Dennis says the latest research is consistent with that of 2005.

“We found across Australia that people wasted around $5 billion a year in food,” Dr Dennis said.

“All states exhibited a high degree of waste, relatively consistent, but we certainly found that the ACT was the biggest waster in the country per capita.

“That’s because average incomes in the ACT are really quite high, so perhaps not surprisingly the more we earn, the more we waste.”

Dr Dennis says he is not optimistic there have been behavioural changes in recent times that may cause people to be less wasteful.

“We hear a lot more about environmental sustainability these days. Governments talk about reduce, reuse and recycle,” he said.

“There’s a lot of reasons to expect that the numbers would have changed, but I guess I’m not terribly optimistic that they will have.”

And it seems in the world of school IT, or atleast this school – they are.

Since before the summer we have been looking into replacing our Management Information System (MIS – database of pupil records). There have only really been three contenders – Phoenix (the here to LEA approved suppler), SIMS (the biggest player in the market), and Serco (the young pretender making serious in roads).

We thought we had it down to a choice between Serco and Phoenix – SIMS had priced themselves out the market. We’d pretty much decided on Serco and were about to go through the motions of officially choosing them as our supplier.

Earlier this week SIMS had come back to us halving their price and putting themselves back in the game. Then today I had my termly network manager meeting.

Two big pieces of news came out of the meeting. Firstly, major issues with Serco support within the LEA. Integration problems with the VLE, remote support problems, and they are failing to sit around the table and work them out with the LEA. This is enough to take Serco from first place to firmly in last place. Oh hum.

Secondly the LEA’s contract with the prefered supplier, Phoenix, has come to an end and is about to go back out to tender. The LEA are unsure if they should now have 1 prefered supplier or 2. So ethier next August Phoenix will be re-confirmed as the supplier of choice, or Phoenix and SIMS would be the official MIS suppliers for the LEA.

Okay, so I’m pre-empting the decision of the tendering process but Phoenix is far to entrenched in the LEA not to be reaffirmed as their MIS of choice. Serco have had to meny issues with the LEA to stand a chance. That only leaves SIMS as the possible number 2 supplier. Everyone else is far too small an outfit to even get close.

What an interesting week this had turned out to be. Monday we were looking at becoming a Serco MIS school and SIMS had no chance of getting a foot in the door. By the end of tomorrow we’ew more likely to be exploring becoming a SIMS MIS school and Serco will have no chance.

A widely watched barometer of sentiment has been pushed down, thanks to Americans starting to lose faith in the economy. The Consumer confidence Index is said to stand at 49.3 according to the New- York based Conference board, down from its revised level of 54.8 in May. Consumer spending in the US is a closely watched activity as it accounts for more than 2/3rds of economic activity. The Board had indicated a larger gain of points which were reversed after the crash of the Dow Jones industrials by 71.04 points. The fall in the present situation index indicates the opinion of the shoppers as to what the future holds for them. The expectations index saw a drop of 6 points -this is indicative of consumers expecting a bleaker future.Though economic conditions are better than they were earlier this year, they still are a long way from being strong or even stabilizing- as evinced by the study. According to eminent economists, this confidence will hold at 55 for quite some time owing to the surges in April and May.Though the consumer sentiment is still low as compared to before the recession, it has increased considerably from the historic low of February. The consumer sentiment reading when above 90 indicates a solid, and growing economy. The figures of 61.4 were the highest since last September and were a surprise to economists who predicted it at 42.3Retailers continue to offer massive discounts because the rise in points has nothing to offer them, and sales are a little more than a dribble. If shoppers continue to worry about economic security it will affect the most important sales period for the retailer I.e. the fall season.

The index in 20 major cities fell by 18.1 % , making the housing rebound a far reality, the decline for the third consecutive month was not a record. The 10 city index too fell 18% from the year before and house prices are at 2003 year levels. The most important plague to customers is ‘job security’ which is an important factor in the willingness to shop. The conference board has a mail survey that reaches 5000 houses where 44.8% of the consumers said that “jobs were hard to get”The sentiment that jobs were plentiful declined by more than 1 %. Anticipation of more jobs declined by almost 2%, while those shoppers anticipating fewer jobs increased by 2 %. The pproportion of individuals who believed that their income would increase has fallen from 10.8% to 9.8%.A rise in unemplyment rates is expected to be reported by the Labour Department. Employers re expected to shed 17,000 more jobs than expected in May.Consumers are into save mode, as splurging at malls has reduced and households use most of their stimulus payments to boost savings to the highest rate in the past 15 years.

The downswing of hope among Americans has pushed down a widely watched barometer of sentiment. According to the Conference board based out of New York the Consumer Confidence Index stands at much lower on the totem pole at 49.3 as opposed to the revised level in May at 54.8. Investors and economists carefully monitor trends in consumer spending as it accounts for almost 70 % of the US economy. The earlier gains were reversed after the conference released its report as the Dow Jones industrials fell 71.04 points, although home price declines moderated in April. The Present Situation index as gauged from the shoppers in May, declined from 29.7 to 24.8. Also, the Expectations Index measuring the outlook for the next six months dropped to 65.5 from 71.5.Though economic conditions are better than they were earlier this year, they still are a long way from being strong or even stabilizing- as evinced by the study. According to eminent economists, this confidence will hold at 55 for quite some time owing to the surges in April and May.The consumer sentiment is still well below what is considered healthy though it has risen above the historic low in February. The solidness of the economy is indicated when the reading goes above 90. Most economists had expected a reading of around 40 and were surprised when it came out more than their expectations by almost 20 points.Merchants continue to struggle with almost no recovery in sales figures, so the rise in sentiment has translated into Nil for them. Retail sellers may continue to be affected in the critical fall season as shoppers are inundated with worries.

The index in 20 major cities fell by 18.1 % , making the housing rebound a far reality, the decline for the third consecutive month was not a record. The conference board has a mail survey that reaches 5000 houses where 44.8% of the consumers said that “jobs were hard to get”There was a decrease from 5.8% to 4.5% of the sentiment that :jobs are plentiful.” The percentage of customers anticipating lesser jobs in the future increased from 25.6% to 27.3%. The number of respondents who believed that ther ewould be a rise in their income dropped from 10.8% to 9.8%.Unemplyment rates have risen to 9.6% from 9.4% according to a report expected from the Labour Department. The shoppers were also asked about their outlook for the next six months and there was a drop to 65.5 from 71.5 in the Expectations Index.Economic conditions may take some more time to stabilize as indicated by this study. The economists, though are confident that this will hold at 55 only because of the surges in April and May and the stock market rally. After the Historic low of 25.3 in February, the consumer sentiment has risen, though it is far from what it used to be. If the reading of consumer sentiment is above 90 then the economy is said to be in a better state. Most economists had expected a reading of around 40 and were surprised when it came out more than their expectations by almost 20 points.Retailers continue to offer massive discounts because the rise in points has nothing to offer them, and sales are a little more than a dribble. If shoppers continue to worry about economic security it will affect the most important sales period for the retailer I.e. the fall season.

The decline of the housing index of 20 major cities for the third month consecutively by 18.1% does not come as a surprise, and the housing rebound still seems far far away. Not only did the index fall by almost 33% from 2006, prices of homes have reached levels of the year 2003The willingness to shop and spend is most affected by the security of the consumers job which is the biggest worry for most people. .8% of the consumers assessed believed that “jobs were hard to get”.1% of the customers surveyed stopped believing that jobs were still plentiful. The anticipation to new jobs saw a 2% decline from 19.3% to !7.4%. Among the people who responded to the survey, the number of people who believed that their incomes would rise declined by 1%.Unemplyment rates have risen to 9.6% from 9.4% according to a report expected from the Labour Department. Employers are also expected to shed almost 17,000 jobs more than what were the projected figures in MayConsumers are into save mode, as splurging at malls has reduced and households use most of their stimulus payments to boost savings to the highest rate in the past 15 years.

Americans are losing hope and it is showing up in a widely observed barometer of public sentiment. 49.3 is where the consumer Confidence index stands as opposed to the revised level of 54.8 in May according to the New York based Conference Board. The findings of this Index are carefully monitored across industries, by economists and investors as it accounts for more than half of the US economy. The earlier gains were reversed after the conference released its report as the Dow Jones industrials fell 71.04 points, although home price declines moderated in April. The Present Situation index as gauged from the shoppers in May, declined from 29.7 to 24.8. Also, the Expectations Index measuring the outlook for the next six months dropped to 65.5 from 71.5.Economic conditions may take some more time to stabilize as indicated by this study. Economists were expecting a rise to 42.3 and the figures came out 14 points higher at 61.4.Most stores continue to aggressively discount in order to entice consumers and the rise in points has not made much of a difference to them. The fall season being critical for sales , retail sellers may continue to be affected by the shoppers worry about economic security.
