Jim Croce nasce a Filadelfia il 10 gennaio 1943 e muore il 20 settembre 1973 in un incidente aereo. Aveva 30 anni.

Jim a 17 anni entra negli Spires (guidati da Tommy West). Il gruppo, che è un classico chorus group ispirato al modello dei New Christ Minstrels e che nel 1963 realizza un Lp.

Nel 1965 Jim viene scelto dalla National Student Association per partecipare ad una tournée in Medio Oriente e in Africa, e l’anno dopo sposa Ingrid Jacobsen, cantante e chitarrista.

Tommy West, che lavora per la ABC, invita Jim e Ingrid a New York e li fa suonare nei più noti locali della città,  dove Jim diventa una piccola rarità, cantando tranquille ballate blues che arrivano più al cuore che al cervello. Nel 1969, dopo aver catturato l’attenzione di Nick Venet, arrivano alla Capitol e produco il loro primo LP in coppia: Approaching day.

L’album risulta un poco approssimativo e, deluso dall’insuccesso, Jim ritorna a Filadelfia e riesce a scrivere molte canzoni d’ispirazione country. Accompagnando l’ottimo chitarrista Maury Muehleisen nella compilazione dell’album Gigerbread (Capitol 1970), riesce a migliorare e perfeziona quella sua particolare vena compositiva che lo farà poi diventare celebre. Con Muehleisen alla chitarra e prodotto da Tommy West, viene realizzato nel 1972 l’album “You don’t mess around with Jim“, caratterizzato da una delicata e malinconica vena folk, con semplici arrangiamenti arricchiti da tocchi orchestrali e con la nitida voce di Jim in primo piano.

Le vendite finalmente arrivano, grazie anche al buon lancio di supporto di due singoli, uno dei quali “You don’t mess around with Jim” riesce a raggiungere il numero 8 in classifica USA. Confortato dal successo, Jim si butta a capofitto nel lavoro e l’anno dopo esce il nuovo LP “Life and time” che vende ancora di più, scalando la classifica fino al 7° posto. Il singolo proposto, con la spiritosa “Bad bad Leroy Brown” arriva addirittura al numero 1.

Era il 1973 e nel Tour organizzato per lui le sale da concerto erano sempre esaurite; Jim finalmente poteva godersi un pò del meritato successo, ma il 20 settembre, l’aereo che trasportava Jim Croce e Maury Muehleisen si schianta vicino alla città di Natchitoches, in Louisiana.

Pochi giorni dopo esce l’album “I got a name”, subito numero 2 in classifica USA e disco d’oro, mentre la canzone omonima e Time in a bottle (tema del film TV She lives) arrivano entrame al numero 1 in classifica singoli USA.

Jim Croce diviene subito un piccolo “cult” della musica folk, e le sue canzoni vengo riproposte con una certa regolarità nelle varie antologie proposte dalle case discografiche.

Jim Croce era un cantante di talento e un ottimo scrittore di testi; suonava il pianoforte, la chitarra e l’armonica. Qualcuno dice che quando è morto doveva ancora scrivere le sue opere migliori, qualcuno dice che, come spesso accade, è stata la sua morte a dare popolarità alle sue canzoni. Io penso che Jim abbia scritto alcune pregievoli melodie e stava ancora maturando, quando la morte repentina gli impedì, forse, di diventare ciò che Simon e Garfunkel erano stati per la generazione precedente.

                  Dupa destul de multe analizari si multi neuroni irositi am ajuns la o concluzie : cartea are foi. O concluzie pe cat de banala, pe atat de adevarata, nu? Viata este o carte cu foi albe. O carte a carei autor esti tu. Tu scrii fiecare capitol, fiecare propozitie, pui fiecare virgula. Poate cateodata incerci sa stergi si sa scrii iar. Si de asta ma apuca nervii cand aud diferiti oameni sau citesc diferite texte care au la baza ideea “ce imi rezerva viitorul”. Pai viitorul ala saracu’, hai ca iti spun eu ce iti rezerva: nimic. Daca tu stai cu mainile in buzunare si astepti sa iti pice un sac de bani in cap, mai greu. Asa ca tu, draga autorule, scrie’ti cartea, ca nimeni nu o va scrie in locul tau. Pune mana si stabileste ce iti doresti si munceste sa il obtii.
                  Zilele trecute mi’au ramas in cap 2 versuri : Vezi tu..atat am asteptat sa vedem daca’ntelegi/Ca poti sa ai tot ce’ti doresti daca stii ce sa alegi. Mare dreptate au. Dar pana la urma si daca ai ales gresit. Ce daca? Esti suparat o zi, 2, 5, o saptamata. Dar hai ho! Cat stam asa sa pierdem timpul? Ne impachetam frumos catrafusele si mergem mai departe. Scriem un alt capitol. Pot spune si din experienta proprie. Uneori sunt atat de sigura pe alegerile pe care le fac, de ma inalt pana la norisorul ala cu numarul 9. Iar cand se dovedeste ca decizia mea nu a fost cea buna, caaad de la o distanta destul de mare fata de sol. Ei si? Asta e. Fiecare face greseli. Fiecare are parte de dezamagiri. Dar asta nu inseamna ca trebuie sa stau 100 de ani sa plang dupa oale sparte. Sau mai e faza aia “Invata din greselile tale si ale celorlalti”. Pai cred ca daca as fi invatat ceva din fiecare greseala pe care am facut’o, Einstein ar fi cu 10 trepte mai jos decat mine.
                  Trecem prin viata. Avem carti pline de experienta, pline de sentimente. Fiecare dintre noi este un autor. Despre paginile scrise insa…

In the labyrinthine Capitol complex, Senators have tons of ways to evade the press, if they want. Last Thursday I was on the Hill, desperate for lunch after a day of shooting, and there she was—Olympia Snowe. Except I didn’t even know it was her at first. All I could see was a huddle of reporters outside the door to the Senate floor. I peeked through the tangle of arms and voice recorders, and couldn’t believe it—the coveted Snowe! I grabbed my camera and started snapping away. Here’s what I got.

Obama ‘Reaches Out’ by Naming ‘Devout’ Muslims to Security Posts

(IsraelNN.com) U.S. President Barack Obama continues to “reach out to Muslims” by appointing them to key security posts amid charges he wrongly ignored internal Muslim terror. One recent appointee was harshly criticized for appearing on a British-based television station whose host is a member of a radical Muslim group.

His “reaching out Muslims” speech in Cairo last June has been followed by action, the latest being this past week’s swearing-in of a Muslim rights advocate to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, shortly after the Fort Hood massacre. HSAC members are involved in expertise on national security.

The new member is Syrian-born Kareem Shora, who was the national executive director of the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination (ADC), which previously has called on the United States to stop providing Israel with weapons because of alleged “atrocities” against Arabs. Her background for her new security post is having been a legal counsel and advocate for Muslim civil rights.

She also has been a frequent guest on the pro-Hamas al-Jazeera satellite network.

Shora, who has been described as a “devout Muslim, joins another devout member of the faith, Arif Alikhan, who was appointed as Assistant Secretary for Policy Development in the Department of Homeland Security. His qualifications for the job were listed as having been in charge of public safety in Los Angeles during his term of deputy mayor. One of his actions was to remove the plan that tracked Muslims in the city who were suspected of terrorist activities.

Americans have been jolted by several lethal attacks and confrontations with Muslims over the past year, including a plot to attack synagogues and down U.S. military aircraft, the manufacture of bombs, an alleged attempt to explode a Texas skyscraper, a plot to blow up malls in Boston, and last month’s Fort Hood massacre by a Muslim psychiatrist who was an officer in the army.

A desire to avoid the appearance of labeling all Muslims as terrorists lunged out from the shadows last month after President Obama faced criticism for not taking seriously the threat of Muslim terrorism within American society as well as in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Several months ago, President Obama appointed Dalia Mogahed, a “devout Muslim,” to his Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. She quickly came under fire for appearing in a telephone interview on a London-based Muslim television station, whose host is a member of an extreme Islamic group.

She said was unaware of the affiliations of her host, whose program included questions and comments favoring the implementation of Islamic Law (“sharia”).

Mogahed explained that she did not hang up the phone in the middle of the interview because “I assumed that very few people would watch this show but that doing something more dramatic would bring more attention.”

In the current issue of Newsweek, columnist Jacob Weisberg, citing former Secretary of State Colin Powell, wrote that “Obama’s [Muslim] heritage feeds a broader suspicion that he is too casual about the threat from America’s Islamist enemies.”

The journalist added, “With the massacre in Texas, Obama now confronts something that George W. Bush did not face in the years after September 11—not just a major act of domestic terrorism, but one struck from inside our security apparatus…. America does not face a threat from the perversion of faith in general. We face a threat from the perversion of one faith in particular.”

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:  Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

May we all take heed to this warning while we still have the chance, because a time is coming when we will not.

I thought I’d post something a little closer to home this week.  I was working earlier on framing a larger version (matted to 24×36″) of DC Skyline, so I figured this would be a good photo to post.  I took this photo in September from across the Potomac River from the DC monuments.  One month in the spring and one month in the fall the full moon lines up nicely with the monuments for moonrise.  This is always a popular time for photographers, and I was down there amidst a group of other people with tripods set up.   I chose a day where the moonrise was early enough so there was still some color in the sky, and chose a spot so that I could catch a wider view of DC with the break in the trees showing a bit of the Potomac in the scene.  It was a beautiful night – the sky obligingly had just enough haze to give the moon an orange tint – the color of the sky and the moon make this photo for me.

-Bine. Nu sunt însa cobai.
Psihologul îsi agita mâinile grasute.
-Doamna draga! Nu sunt un Frankestein. Pentru mine, factorul primordial este individul, lucru firesc, deoarece ma ocup de creier. Daca este ceva în neregula cu pustii, vreau sa-i vindec.
Paradine lasa tigara si privi fumul albastrui ce se unduia în sus.
-Puteti pune un diagnostic?
-O sa încerc. Asta este tot ce pot spune. Daca mintile lor, înca nedezvoltate, au fost cuplate pe canalul X, este necesar sa le readucem înapoi. Nu spun ca ar fi masura cea mai inteligenta, dar este impusa de standardele noastre. La urma urmei, Emma si Scott vor trai în aceasta societate.
-Mda. Mda. Nu cred ca s-a întâmplat cine stie ce… Par absolut normali.
-Aparent, se poate. N-au nici un motiv sa se comporte anormal, nu? Si cum puteti spune daca… gândesc diferit?
-O sa-i chem, rosti Paradine.
-Fi-ti cât mai natural, da? Nu vreau sa se auto-cenzureze.
Jane arata cu barbia spre jucarii.
-Lasati-le acolo, încuvinta Holloway.
Dupa ce Emma si Scott sosira, psihologul nu-i întreba nimic direct. Izbuti sa-l atraga pe Scott, pe nesimtite, în conversatie, aruncând ici-acolo cuvinte cheie. Nimic evident, ca un test de cuvinte asociate; pentru asa ceva este necesara cooperarea subiectului.
Cel mai interesant lucru se petrecu atunci când Holloway lua abacul.
-Vrei sa-mi arati si mie cum functioneaza?
Scott ezita.
-Da, domnule… Asa…
misca cu abilitate o bila prin labirint, într-o linie încâlcita, atât de iute, încât nimeni nu a fost sigur daca, în cele din urma, bila disparuse sau nu. S-ar putea sa fi fost numai iuteala de mâna. Apoi, iarasi…
Încerca si Holloway. Scott îl privi, strâmbând din nas.
-Asa este bine?
-Ntt… Trebuie sa ajunga acolo…
-Aici? De ce?
-Pai, numai asa poate fi facut sa merga.
Holloway era însa conditionat de Euclid. Nu exista nici un motiv pentru ca bila sa alunece de pe o anumita sârma pe alta. Parea un factor aleator. De asemenea, Holloway îsi dadu brusc seama; anterior, când îi aratase Scott, bila nu avusese aceeasi traiectorie. Cel putin, asa i se parea lui.
-Vrei sa-mi arati înca o data?
Scott mai arata o data si înca o data. Holloway clipi înapoia ochelarilor. Aleatoriu, da si variabil: de fiecare data, Scott deplasase bila pe un alt traseu.
Cu toarte acestea, nici unul dintre adulti nu putea spune daca bila disparea sau nu. Daca s-ar fi asteptat sa o vada disparând, reactiile lor ar fi fost diferite.
În cele din urma nu se rezolva nimic. Pe când îsi lua ramas bun, Holloway paru stânjenit.
-Pot sa mai revin?
-As dori, raspunse Jane. Oricând. Credeti înca…
Barbatul încuviinta.
-Mintile lor nu reactioneaza normal. Sunt inteligenti, dar am impresia incredibila ca ei ajung la solutii într-un mod pe care noi nu-l întelegem. Parca ar folosi algebra, pe când noi utilizam geometria. Concluziile sunt aceleasi, dar difera caile de ajungere la ele.
-Ce-i cu jucariile? întreba Paradine.
-Ascundeti-le. As dori sa le împrumut, daca se poate…
În noaptea aceea, Paradine nu dormi prea bine. Paralela facuta de Holloway fusese prost aleasa. Ducea la teritorii care te puneau pe gânduri. Factorul X… Copiii utilizau echivalentul unei gândiri algebrice, în timp ce adultii aveau o gândire geometrica…
Corect. Numai ca…
Algebra îti ofera solutii pe care geometria nu le poate da, deoarece exista termeni si simboluri ce nu pot fi exprimate geometric. Daca logica X ducea la concluzii de neacceptat pentru mintea unui adult?
-La dracu! sopti Paradine.
Jane se foi lânga el.
-Iubitule? Nici tu nu poti sa dormi?
-Nu.
Se ridica si trecu alaturi. Emma dormea linistita ca un îngeras, cu bratul în jurul ursuletului. Prin usa deschisa, Paradine zarea, pe perna, capul lui Scott.
Jane veni în prag, lânga el. O cuprinse cu bratul.
-Saracutii, murmura ea. Si Holloway îi numea nebuni. Cred ca noi suntem cei nebuni, Dennis.
-Da. Avem vedenii.
Scott se foi în somn. Fara sa se trezeasca, bolborosi ceva asemanator unei întrebari, desi nu parea sa fie într-o limba cunoscuta. Emma gemu si ea, încetisor, ca un mieunat de pisica.
Nici unul nu se trezise. Continuau sa doarma.
Paradine se gândi însa – si o durere îl sageta prin trup – ca Scott o întrebase ceva pe Emma si fetita îi raspunsese.
Mintile lor se schimbasera într-atât de mult încât si… somnul le era diferit?
Îsi alunga gândul.
-O sa racesti. Hai înapoi în pat. Vrei sa bei ceva?
-Asa cred, raspunse Jane, privind-o pe Emma. Mâna i se întinse orbeste spre fetita; o retrase si adauga: Haide, sa nu-i trezim.
Baura putin coniac, în trecere. Dupa ce adormi, Jane plânse în somn. Scott nu era treaz, dar creierul lui lucra încet si atent. Astfel:
„Vor lua jucariile. Barbatul cel gras… poate listava periculos. Însa directia Ghorica nu iese… e vankrus dun nu le are. Intransdectie… stralucitor si luminos… Emma…Acum este mai khopranika decât… tot nu vad cum sa… thavarar lixery distan…”
O particica din gândurile lui Scott puteau fi întelese. Emma însa se conditionase mult mai repede factorului X.
Si ea gândea.
Nu ca un adult, sau un copil. Nici macar o fiinta umana. Poate doar ca o fiinta umana de un tip socant de nefamiliar pentru „genus homo”.
Uneori pâna si lui Scott îi venea greu sa-i urmareasca logica.
Daca n-ar fi fost Holloway, viata ar fi intrat într-o rutina aproape normala. Jucariile nu mai erau pomenite. Emma continua sa fie fericita cu papusile si formele pentru nisip. Scott se preocupa de baseball si de trusa chimica. Faceau tot ceea ce faceau si alti copii, aratând putine, chiar deloc, strafulgerari ciudate. Holloway parea sa fi fost un alarmist.
Încercase jucariile si obtinuse rezultate stupide. Trasese nenumarate grafice si diagrame, corespondase cu matematicieni, ingineri si alti psihologi si aproape ca înnebunise, cautând sa gaseasca scopul constructiei obiectelor. Cutia însasi, cu mecanismul ei enigmatic, nu spunea nimic. O mare parte a mecanismului era topit. Dar jucariile…
Orice cercetare era data peste cap de factorul aleatoriu. Desi denumirea era pur semantica, Holloway era convins ca nu era tocmai aleator. Nu avea însa suficiente date. De exemplu, nici un adult nu putea lucra cu abacul. Si, prevazator, Holloway nu lasase nici un copil sa se joace cu obiectul.
Cubul de cristal era tot atât de criptic. Arata o sumedenie de culori tipatoare, care uneori se deplasau. Prin asta, aducea ca un caleidoscop, desi, învârtindu-l si sucindu-l nu intervenea nici o modificare. Din nou factorul aleator. Sau, mai degraba, necunoscutul. Structura X. În cele din urma, Paradine si Jane revenira la un soi de indiferenta, cu senzatia ca copiii se vindecasera, acum când cauza fusese îndepartata. Siguri de actiunile Emmei si ale lui Scott, parasisera orice griji.
Copiilor le placea sa înoate, sa se plimbe cu bicicleta, sa mearga la filme si sa se joace cu jucariile normale la vârsta lor. Este adevarat ca mu stapâneau unele jucarii mecanice, care împlineau o anumita logica. De pilda, un glob tridimensional, care trebuia construit din elemente componente, desfacute, jucarie pe care, ce-i drept, abia o întelesese Paradine.
Din când în când, mai existau însa scapari. Într-o sâmbata dupa-amiaza, Scott se plimba cu bicicleta împreuna cu tatal sau si se oprisera pe vârful unui deal. Sub ei se întindea o vale superba.
-Draguta, nu-i asa? remarcase Paradine.

Blue dog Dems are coming under heavy pressure from party leaders this week, as Democrats scramble to pass their agenda before a full-scale revolt breaks out. Thousands of people rallied on the steps of the Capitol Thursday to protest the massive power grab being arranged by our august representatives. Another protest is planned for today, and the turnout is expected to be even larger.

The alarming results of November 3rd kicked the Democratic machine into hyper-drive and they’ll work all weekend to shove their legislation through. The first thing they did was attempt a head fake, with high-level Dems telling the media that health care won’t pass this year..

“Getting this done by the by the end of the year is a no-go,” a senior Democratic leadership aide told ABC News. Two other key Congressional Democrats also told ABC News the same thing.

Before you could heave a sigh and say “Lord willing and the creek don’t rise”, both houses of Congress began a race to jump the shark on both cap and trade and health care.

On Thursday, Senate Democrats hustled the cap-and-trade bill out of committee without so much as a hello-and-howdy to the Republicans — knowing full well the GOPers would oppose it.

Meanwhile, Democratic leaders in the House want a Saturday showdown for their $1.2 trillion health care takeover after trumpeting support from the AARP and American Medical Association.

Pelosi is rolling out the big guns, many hesitant Blue Dogs have received calls from Rahm Emanuel and Obama. The fact is, Democrats control the House by such a wide margin that they can have 40 defectors and still pass a bill…and they’re still having trouble getting the votes.

Representative Jason Altmire, an undecided Democrat from Pennsylvania, said Obama, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and two Cabinet secretaries have called him to make the pitch that “this is an historic moment.”

Altmire said administration and House leaders have stressed that the House bill isn’t the final product, since the Senate is deliberating over its own version, “but if we didn’t do this, it’s dead,” Altmire said.

“It doesn’t appear they have the votes,” Altmire told reporters. “That’s pretty clear.”

In a stunning display of her peculiar brand of lying-in-the-face-of-all-evidence, San Fran Nan said this to a reporter…

Pelosi, a California Democrat, said she is hopeful a Sunday session won’t be necessary. “It all depends on the Republicans and how long they want to delay,” she said.

“We’ll see when we get to the floor,” Pelosi said when asked if she had the votes.

Republicans? How stupid do you think we are, ma’am? The Republicans couldn’t delay a broken-down Yugo right now, much less the government run-away freight train to hell.

Apparently, a lot of Blue Dogs are putting up at least a token resistance, if only for the sake of the next election. I hate to break to them, (okay, I love it) but they’re getting the hook regardless. The American people are tired of being talked down to, and the backlash is going to be epic.

The sleeping giant is not only awake, he’s on the hunt and loaded for bear.

WASHINGTON – A crowd of at least 10,000 descended on the Capitol today to protest the trillion-dollar health-care bill and storm the halls of congressional office buildings.

With less than a week’s notice to prepare for the event, the throng steadily grew as buses unloaded for an “Emergency House Call on Congress” to stop the House from passing the bill.

A group of legislators led by Reps. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., and Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., hosted the emergency town-hall meeting to protest the House Democrats’ nearly 2,000-page bill, which is projected to cost at least $1.1 trillion.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said he expects the House take the final version to the floor on Saturday.

But thousands of enthusiastic Americans packed the Capitol grounds, chanting loudly: “Hands off our health care,” and “You work for us!” They called, “Nancy Nancy,” urging the House speaker to emerge from the Capitol.

Many attendees wore patriotic clothing, waved U.S. and “Don’t Tread on Me” flags and carried signs that read, “You lie,” “No socialistic health care” and “Politicians lie, patients die.” Others came straight from work, wearing business suits.

The ralliers arrived as early as 8:30 a.m., coming by bus, car and plane from from all across the country, including states such as California, Oregon, Washington, Ohio, Iowa, New Jersey, South Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Kentucky and Texas.

Patsy Bailey, a protester at the rally from Durwood, Md., told WND she believes lawmakers should be subject to their own health-care plan.

“Nobody knows what’s in the bill,” she said. “Are they going to sign up for this?”

Carolyn Bowman of Germantown, Md., had her own message for Congress: “I’m totally against government controlling our health care. Stay out of our lives!”

Chiropractor Andy Daniele of Farmington, N.J., and friend Kevin Stafford of Eatontown drove to the Capitol wearing T-shirts that read, “Liberty equals limited government” and “VA! NJ! DC next!”

“I just came hoping they don’t mess things up too much,” Daniele said. “I’m looking to see how long it would take for Sarah Palin to fix this mess.”

Stafford brought his 6-year-old son to the rally.

“I’m here to protest the loss of the land of opportunity for my son,” he said.

Daniele and Stafford would like to see Palin and Bachmann to run for president in 2012. They said they don’t care who heads up the ticket, they just want the two women in charge.

Cal and Frank Pasqua drove to Washington from Brooklyn, N.Y., with the rest of their family. Cal, a musician who travels the world, played “Amazing Grace” on his bagpipes.

“We’re here mainly protesting the amount of spending that this government is doing around the world,” he said. “We’re highly against any unconstitutional wars. And, unfortunately, through the Federal Reserve system, we have a system that is printing money out of thin air.”

Cal continued, “It just seems to be a non-stop cycle of spending – even funding this bill today – there’s no money. I think this is just a distraction from something bigger. Of course, we need health care, but this bill isn’t congruent with my friends or my family. The American people don’t believe in this.”

Frank agreed with his brother, saying they both would like to see the end of the Federal Reserve.

David Medley came from Louisville, Ky., with his friend, Robin Becker. Medley said he’s totally against the health bill and government-run health care.

“But the main thing is abortion funding,” he said. “I’m doing this for my kids and grandkids.”

Becker said, “This protest ought to send a message to them. People don’t want this shoved down their throats. Most of the (members of Congress) haven’t even read it. It’s ridiculous.”

Eric Johnson from Richmond, Va., said the issue is bigger than health-care reform.

“Along with standard reasons – like we can’t afford this, and don’t meddle in our lives – the biggest thing is that I know the people messing with this don’t care about health care,” he said. “It’s a power grab, money grab mostly, for the Democratic Party. I’m fed up with the Republicans, too.”

Protester Della Ellar of Richmond, Va., described herself as a proud WND reader. She plans to ask Nancy Pelosi why she won’t accept the same health-care “reform” she is imposing on America.

Hessie Harris of Silver Spring, Md., accused Congress of trying to “raffle off the country.”

“I’m here to stop the raffle and get my country back,” she said.

Tim Phillips, president of Americans for Prosperity, a group that helped bus 10,000 Americans to the Capitol, said, “Obama, Pelosi and Reid refuse to listen to American taxpayers who have clearly demonstrated through rallies, phone calls and congressional visits that they don’t want to pay for a trillion-dollar, government-defined health-care plan.”

Missy Smith, president of Women Against the Killing and Exploitation of Unprotected Persons, or WAKE UP, led a sit-in protest outside Pelosi’s Washington office.

“We’re protesting because the bill would provide taxpayer funding of child-killing,” she said. “We will crumple the massive bill one page at a time and leave it tattered on the floor. We are deeply troubled that Nancy Pelosi wants to fund the murder of innocent babies under the guise of health care. She’s a Catholic, and she should know better.”

As a mother who has counseled many others through the injuries and haunting sorrow of abortion, Smith said she was ready to be arrested if that’s what it would take to stop this legislation fraught with danger to women, babies, the disabled and the elderly.

After Smith spoke with WND, the Associated Press reported that a dozen pro-life protesters were arrested at 2:15 p.m. outside Pelosi’s suite with charges ranging from unlawful conduct to disorderly conduct and unlawful entry. According to the report, the people arrested had been criticizing language in the bill because they said it federally subsidizes abortions.

According to Politico, Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, invited thousands of protesters to enter the House buildings and find their representatives after the rally.

“I invite you, when the rally’s over, to travel in those halls, look at the walls, find your (representative) and walk in,” she said. “Let them know how you feel about this bill.”

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, held up a copy of the U.S. Constitution, and Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., shouted to Pelosi, “Madam Speaker, throw out this bill.”

Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., called the bill a “freight train of government spending.”

Rep. Tom Petri, R-Wis., said he has no question the massive rally was a worthwhile undertaking.

“The concern, patriotism and focus of the people who are here is sure to have an impact,” he said. “It may not overnight, but it’s definitely making a difference.”

Actor John Voight, “Liberty and Tyranny” author Mark Levin and Dr. Betsy McCaughey, former New York lieutenant governor, also spoke at today’s event.

Voight told the crowd the Obama administration’s “lies and deception are blatant,” Politico reported.

“Maybe it was the 20 years of subconscious programming by Rev. Wright to damn America,” he said.

The crowd cheered wildly for Rep. Bachmann as a protester shouted, “Palin/Bachmann 2012!”

Bachmann declared to a tightly packed group, “You came! You came to your House! We put the word out just a couple of days ago, and you came!”

Meanwhile, the White House downplayed the rally, and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs criticized the Republican reform plan.

“There’s a rally going on without a solution on their side,” he told reporters.

As WND reported, Bachmann had been urging citizens to come “by the carload” to Washington and “pay an emergency House call to Congress” this week.

“This is the most effective way we have to kill socialized medicine,” she told WND. “Nothing is more effective at reaching a congressman than having a citizen come to Washington, D.C. – not asking for a handout, not asking for tax money, not asking to take some liberty away from somebody else, but just asking for freedom.”

Bachmann noted that Pelosi may have garnered the 218 votes necessary to pass the legislation as early as Saturday.

Rep. Hoyer told reporters today, “We certainly have well over 218 people who say they want to vote for the bill.”

Bachmann asked citizens to bring video cameras, office numbers and phone numbers of their representatives so they could find them and “get them on video saying how they will vote. “The bill, if adopted,” she said, “will be a disaster. It is unconstitutional. We need the help of American people.”

WND editor Joseph Farah urged citizens who could not attend the rally to send “pink slips” to every member of Congress.

Bachmann said Americans sent a crucial message to Congress today, making it clear that they do not support the Democrats’ health “reform.”

“We Republicans can’t stop the passage,” she said. “But with resistance from the American people, I am fully confident it can be defeated.”

U.S. Capitol, Tea-party rally

TPM/Christina Bellantoni—U.S. Capitol Police arrested 10 people this afternoon after the Capitol Hill Tea Party crowd stormed Congressional office buildings.

Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, public information office for the Capitol Police, told TPMDC the arrests happened in the Cannon House building as tea partiers attempted to protest Speaker Nancy Pelosi about health care.

They were charged with unlawful entry (entering a Congressional office and refusing to leave when told to do so) and/or disorderly conduct (yelling in the hallway outside an office) at Room 235 in the Cannon House Office Building.

Room 235 is Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office for district business, not where she conducts her duties as Speaker. That’s handled at an office in the Capitol building.

TPMDC happened upon a crowd that formed around two police vans as the protesters were prepared for “transporting,” according to one officer there.

Without those official details, protesters in the crowd watching the arrests were furious. They shouted “Let them go!” and one man yelled at the police that “Martin Luther King” was being dishonored and shouted “Letter from Birmingham Jail!”

One woman told officers they were “shameful.”

“This is America, this is not the Soviet Union,” one woman said.

Like a bad game of telephone, the crowd spread rumors without anyone having witnessed exactly what happened.

Several people said the group had been arrested for praying. Others said the group was arrested for ripping up pages from the nearly 2,000-page health care bill.

To show support for them, members of the crowd started ripping up their pages from the bill, which rally organizers had handed out for the purpose of reading them to members of Congress.
