Cappadonna is probably no one’s favorite rapper, and he’s certainly fucked up a good share of Wu bangers  throughout his association with the Clan (“Triumph,” anyone?). Lately, however, I’ve been warming to this dude’s style, as the same characteristics that once struck me as flaws (eg. unpredictability, inconsistency, seemingly half-assed verse construction) start to sound more and more like benefits, especially in an industry increasingly populated by sanitized, pre-fab rapper-dolls. The antithesis of a Drake or Kid Cudi, Cappadonna is a true rough-neck, unconcerned with softening his edges or perfecting his flow. He just gives you raw emotion and whatever the fuck comes to his mind, yelling into the mic with that inimitable, street-hardened voice. Donna’s Slang Prostitution dropped in January, but despite the amazing cover art, I’m not sure I’m ready to digest a whole album of his verses. I have been loving some of his guest appearances lately, though.

The tracks above showcase two very different sides of an emcee not typically praised for his versatility. “God is Love” (from U-God’s excellent Dopium) finds Cappa in “Wu-Tang’s for the kids” mode, as he admonishes other rappers for glorifying street life and bringing down the hood. While I fail to see how Cappa’s not similarly guilty, it’s hard to argue with the passion in his voice, and there’s no question he steals the track. On “With You,” really the only good song on the Kreator’s Live Coverage (2004), Cappa again goes first, here contributing a laugh-out-loud performance reminiscent of his immortal verse on “Ice Cream.” For a song ostensibly for the ladies—down to its laid-back beat and R&B vocals—I can’t imagine a better opening line than, “I love a honey half-Chinese and half-Guyanese/be quick, drop to her knees.” Sounds like a Craigslist personal! Who says men aren’t picky?

Ghostface Killah has been the most self-promoting and media-infiltrating member of the Wu-Tang Clan since Method Man’s movie career disappeared post-How High. He seems to appear everywhere, from movies like Iron Man and Walk Hard to appearences on 30 Rock, and always with a certain pimped-out panache.

Seeing Ghostface a.k.a. Tony Starks a.k.a the Iron Man (and the list goes on) one expects that effort to be channeled into an over the top, crazy performance. While his set at Emo’s on Sunday perhaps fell short of a melodramatic mind-explosion, Killah came to put on a show.

A surprise guest was Cappadonna, who introduced his Wu-Brother and pulled a surprising amount of weight on stage. At least a third of all the verses were his, and they were refreshingly robust. Cappa’s flow has always been some of the most stilted of the group, with odd word choices and even odder rhythms, but tonight he was bearable, if not downright entertaining.

A smattering of singles from his last three albums as well as a few verses from old 36 Chambers songs gave a good representation of where the artist is at, professionally. He still remembers what made him famous. GK + Cappa verses from “Triumph” were a welcome addition to the set, as was a Killah rendition of “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”. While the Ode to ODB is pretty standard at Killa Bee concerts, its nice to know they’re keeping his memory alive so well, and it always makes for a good crowd rouser.

In the end, Ghostface didn’t need any of the over-the-top presentation that his public image usually invokes. This show was cool, controlled Ghostface blasting lyrics and interacting with the crowd. Even without the purple fur and chains, scantily-clad floozies jumped the stage and bowed to their idols, quickly making for one of the most awkward and disturbing scenes in recent memory as the Killah classily passed them on to his hypemen and Cappa, all of whom seemed gracious.

And that’s how a Killa Bee brings it. Rapping in a hooded sweatshirt, with low audio quality in a tight space, with enough guts n’ gristle to still resemble the billionaire Tony Starks.

Gee, I wonder if martial arts visuals would fit with Wu-Tang music? Um, yeah, it does!

In celebration of #musicmondays (yes, twitter hash tags have infiltrated my everyday vocabulary), it’s mandatory that I re-post the abundant Raekwon leaks that have restored balance in hip hop cyberspace. Yet another banger from J Dilla off of the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 album, which I may remind you drops on September 8th. You may recall that the beat on this track was on the re-release of Jaylib, Champion Sound on the track “The Red”. I remember when I heard the beat initially (on the Jaylib album) and was kind of disappointed that Madlib had changed it. Either way you look at it, the beat does knock like crazy and these guys are dope as hell over it. Cappadonna’s verse is a little below average compared to Ghost Deini and The Chef, but it’s still a dope ass track.
