So, I know the announcement of the BCS bowl matchups was supposed to be the big sporting news for today, but I thought this was much more exciting:

That’s right, the Caps are leading the Eastern Conference (and are second overall in the NHL). Yes, I’m aware that the margins are not large – and yes, I know it’s not the first time this season that this has happened. The standings just happened to catch my eye this morning and made me happy, and I thought I’d share.

Go Caps!

Here’s some promising news on the Verizon FiOS/CSN+ situation…

I’ve been exchanging messages with Verizon Director of Product Management Joseph Ambeault on Twitter over the past week and on Friday afternoon he said: “Caps & Wizards fans – you have been heard & we have a solution for the ‘over flow’ games – hustling implementation plan.”

Those are the only details I have from them at this time, but I will post any updates I get.

According to the schedules on each team’s website, the next game that is set to air on CSN+ is Saturday, December 12 for the Caps, when they play at Toronto, and Friday, December 18 for the Wizards, when they play at Golden State.

A painful memory. But all too vivid.

My third (ever) hockey experience was when the now DH took me and a work colleague of his to a Caps playoff game in 1995. It was game 6. Versus the Pens. Caps lost 7-1.

I couldn’t help but think: ‘Seriously, people pay this  much to sit in the freezing cold to watch THIS?!’ 

Needless to say, it was a LONG time before I went to another hockey game.

1994/95: In a season shortened to 48 games by a 4-month lockout the Capitals again make the playoffs by finishing in 3rd place with a 22-18-8 record. In the playoffs the Capitals would jump out to a fast start taking a 3-1 series lead against the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, with a chance to close the series out in Game 5 the Caps lost in overtime 6-5. In Game 6 at home the Capitals were never in the game being blown out 7-1 as the series went to a 7th game where the Capitals barely gave any effort at all becoming the first team ever to blow a 3-1 series lead 3 times losing 3-0.

AND THE FIRST CHOICE IS…RECOMBINANT FERMENTATION.OMG WHAT IS THAT? I HAVE NO IDEA AS WELL… GOOGLED LOTS OF TIME JUST TO FILL UP SOME CRAP FOR BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE. AFTER WE FINISHED, WE HUNG OUT AT THE COMPUTER LAB FOR A WHILE PLAYING FACEBOOK BEFORE WE WERE LOCKED OUT WE GOT TRAPPED IN SCHOOL DUE TO THE RAIN. STONED IN SCHOOL UNTIL THE RAIN GOT SMALLER AND OFF WE GO TO THE BUS STOP. ON THE WAY HOME I LISTENED TO THE RADIO WHILE PLAYING ON MY PHONE. REACHED THE TERMINAL STOP AND CHANGED BUS AND GOT HOME. AND THAT IS ABOUT IT… LIFE SEEMS TO GO PAST VERY SLOWLY BUT WE STILL HAVE TO SURVIVE IT ANYWAY.

We were watching the Caps game last night when Ovi got hurt and someone commented: “This will be one of those ‘I remember where I was when Ovi hurt his knee’ moments”. Let’s hope it’s not that serious. But the comment sparked conversation about memorable hockey moments.

So, in honor of the numerous Christmas countdowns started this first day of December, I offer 25 Days of Hockey.

Day 1:
My VERY first recollection of anything hockey related is from about age 4. I remember (vaguely) my dad coming home from the then Capital Center in Largo, MD with this funny, flattened, hard black ball which he offered to me. I had no idea what it was, but he explained it was a hockey puck…and proceeded to explain a bit about the game played with pucks. And sticks. On skates. On ice. It was all a bit too much for my 4-year-old brain to handle. But, I took the puck and placed it alongside my little girl treasures. It was from dad, after all.

Somehow, I still have that puck today. And now, my (much older) brain ‘gets’ the game and all of its nuances. And that puck is alongside all the others we’ve collected over the years. For now, it is still my favorite.

This is a very making-your-heart-warm-n-fuzzy campaign. And everyone look so good!!!!
