VHS

The VHS format is the oldest type of camcorder. This type of video camcorder is fast becoming outdated, because you can only play back the video on a VHS VCR system. VHS camcorders are not nearly as clear as digital video camcorders that offer clear video with 540 lines of resolution, VHS video cameras only offer 240 lines of resolution. They also weigh more and are much more bulky, that dv camcorders. You can only find these video camera used because their technology is now outdated.

VHS-C

The VHS-C format offer 240 lines of resolution, just like VHS. These analog camcorders come in a smaller size that the VHS camcorder models, but use the same technology. The video tapes used in VHS-C camcorders are much smaller in size than VHS, just in a smaller camcorder design. VHS-C is considered old technology and not used today in newer models.

8mm

If you are looking to record more than 1 hour, then 8mm camcorders are perfect. These video cameras can record up to 5 hours of footage and they offer better video quality that VHS cameras. In order to view video from your 8mm video camcorder, you need to connect the camcorder to input jacks on your TV or your VCR system.

MiniDV

MiniDV, short for mini Digital Video off the clearest and most vivid colors out of all the types of camcorders on the market, and they’re small in size only 4 inches in width and height. Mini dv camcorders can fit in the palm of your hand, making them very easy to handle and transport. And if you like editing your video footage you can connect dv camcorders to your computer system. Transferring the video is a snap with the FireWire connection. Once the footage is in your computers hard drive you can burn it to dvd, add it to your web site or email small clips to friends and family.

Digital8

Digital8 camcorders offer the best of both worlds, Hi8 and DV. You can use 8mm and hi8 video tapes combined with the best image quality found in digital camcorder formats. Digital8 camcorders are larger and heavier than Mini DV camcorders, but they are also cheaper in price. The Digital8 system offers 540 lines of crystal clear resolution.

DVD Camcorders

The newest form of digital video cameras are DVD camcorders. These camcorders are small in size, just like Digital8 and Mini DV camcorders. The big difference compared to other camcorder systems is that DVD camcorders use recordable DVD discs such as DVD-R or DVD-RW. The big benefit to dvd video cameras is that they can be played on your home DVD player, and of course the quality is the best you can find.

Price comparisons

If you want to buy the cheapest priced camcorder go for a VHS analog camcorder, you don’t get the same quality as digital camcorders however if you plan on filming family vacations this should be sufficient for your needs. Then there are DVD camcorders, they are the most expensive of digital video cameras, but at the same time, they are the newest technology offering the best image and sound quality. Lastly is the mini dv format, this is probably the best camcorder for the price and quality. Small in size and reasonably priced. Review top manufacturers such as Panasonic, Sharp, Canon and Sony which offer the very popular Sony Handycam.

It looks like a pretty unexceptional watch, does it not? Except that the Tudor brand is Rolex’s more modest sister. Tudor was introduced by Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf in 1946. The most important difference between Rolex and Tudor is that the Tudors do not have a Rolex manufactured movement, but a rather a modified ETA mechanism.

This is as close to owning a Rollie as I will ever get.

Fun Watch Facts:
1. Few watch companies make their own movements. the list of manufactures includes Rolex, Glashutte Original, Audemars Piguet, Girard-Perregaux and Chopard. This kind of information probably only matters to crazy watch people and to people who are trying to justify spending too much money on a watch.

2. Many watch companies have less expensive lines. Bulova has Caravelle, Hamilton had Vantage, Benrus had Belforte. Secondary lines were mostly introduced to battle bargain brands like Timex. They frequently had non-Swiss movements to keep costs down.

När skedde egentligen sista flygningen med den franska skönheten? I flera års tid har jag gått i tron att den sista luftvärdiga Caravelle var 3D-KIK, c/n 251 (f.d Air Congo 9Q-CLD Bukavu) som flög för Transair Congo och tyvärr förolyckades i ett landningshaveri den 27 augusti 2004. Som Lae påpekar i kommentarerna till förra inlägget tycks det emellertid som om det fanns fler…. 9Q-CPI, alltså den f.d. Finnair Jyväskylä kan ha varit luftvärdig så sent som 2005. Här finns utrymme för vidare efterforskningar!

Innan 3D-KIK flög åt fanders hann den göra några flygningar åt MONUC, FN-styrkorna i Kongo och syntes upprepade gånger i Kindu som då drevs av en svensk flygvapenbataljon. Bland di svenske råkade finnas min f.d. kollega “Gonza” som lyckades fånga besöket i en filmsnutt som cirkulerat på tuben sen dess. Och nog får man se Caravelle på nära håll alltid! En annan bekant som var med vid tillfället berättar att de bad besättningen hålla lågt över bantröskeln för att få bra bilder, men det blev visst över, eller ska man säga under, förväntan….

Samma källa berättar även att ett par lokala förmågor passade på att sno hans cykel medan uppmärksamheten var riktad åt annat håll! Så kan det gå…

Vi befinner oss i ett kylslaget Norrland, närmare bestämt på Kramfors Flygplats. Tiden är vintern 1981/82 och på plattan står två Super Caravelle från Finnair respektive Sterling. En inte helt ovanlig syn i Ådalen på den tiden då det rör sig om Mil-charter för värnpliktiga från regementena i Västernorrland. En tur varje vecka till och från Göteborg var rutinen. Beväringar från östkusten fick nöja sig med SJ…

Samtliga foton kommer från en serie diabilder tagna av min pappa som var AFIS i Kramfors 1980-87. Publiceras med benäget tillstånd från densamme.

Den här trafiken bedrevs under åren av vitt skilda bolag, varvat med Flygvapnets egna transportresurser. Sterling var en flitig medverkande medan Finnair troligen var en engångsföreteelse. Busy Bee, Scanair, Braathens och senare Transwede var andra namn som syntes genom åren. Även en del mer exotiska bolag som Swissair fann vägen norrut.

Jyväskylä, serienummer 169 och levererad 1966. Finnair var vid den här tiden på väg att fasa ut sina Caravelle till förmån för DC-9, sannolikt var maskinen tagen ur drift sommaren 1982. Tydligen rök det nåt helt förfärligt om de finska maskinerna som lämnade hela flygplatsen insvept i tät dimma vid avfärd. Sterling och Transwede betydligt renare. Jyväskyläs öde skulle så småningom föra kärran till Afrika där den enligt uppgift flög så sent som 2004. Någon som vet mer om dess historia?

Kampen om de bästa platserna… Syner som den här var inte ovanliga. För en lumpare med helgpermis (eller om det nu var veckopermis på den tiden, man låg ju inne längre perioder förr) och hemlängtan spelar inte kylan någon roll, även ifall det innebär långa minuter av köande vid trappan. Någon verkar ta en rövare genom att springa på den bortre sidan. Undrar hur mycket det hjälpte?

Samling vid trappan i skymningen. Ingen verkar frysa nämnvärt trots att det ser minst sagt kyligt ut. En riktigt blåsig midvinterdag gick nog inte boardingen lika städat till.

Under hösten har scannern gått varm med negativ och diabilder från tiden 1980-1995 och tanken är att posta ett inlägg av den här typen varje vecka. Räkna med flygtema för de flesta, fast lite annat ska nog kunna smygas in också. Finns det önskemål om tema går det utmärkt att komma med förslag.

There’s famous hotels and then there’s infamous hotels. Saigon’s Hotel Continental fits somewhere between the two.

In a city that’s constantly evolving so little time is taken to appreciate what already exists. But while buildings grow taller, and the ground below edges toward a distant speck, there are always those few little remnants remaining that help remind us of a rich and vibrant past.

None more so than Saigon’s Hotel Continental, which has been sitting proudly in the centre of the city since 1880, and now looks out toward a new and thriving Vietnam. It’s hardly suprising that the phrase that follows it most – “if the walls of the Hotel Continental could speak, they could tell you many stories” – still defines it to this day, past visitors include the writers Graham Greene, Andre Malraux and Rabindranath Tagore as well as an entire war-time media in the 60s and 70s.

But those stories of old, the ones of romance, war and opulence, are no longer being whispered from its walls at 134 Dong Khoi Street. Instead, what remains, is a sorrowful lament, telling tales of urban sacrifice and loss. A story who’s only destiny is to be drowned out by the concrete canopies of its high-rise neighbours the Sheraton and the Caravelle.

Governmental ownership under organisation Saigon Tourist, according to many, is the reason for the grand hotel’s fall from grace. After being put into governmental hands in 1975, after then owner Mathier Francini, a French gangster, ceded, its glamour has somewhat waned. The swathe of foreign investment in the late 90s, expanding the areas around it, spelled out even more that the death knell was on its way.

But what can it do other than rely on the charm of its beautiful facade? The infamous drinking hole, the Continental Shelf, referred to in Greene’s novel The Quiet American, is long gone. Even its high profile guests, including then Mayor of Paris Jacque Chirac and Malaysian President Mohatia Mohamed, hardly match the star-billing of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, who have stayed in the Sheraton and Caravelle respectively.

Some say it’s time for an overhaul, others have called for privatization. Tourists don’t seem to care too much either way. Hotel Review aggregating websites such as tripadvisor.com spark up a host of uninspired comments. One user, callimeroo, from Montreal, claims that the hotel is “in desperate need of an overhaul”, while another user, indi-princess, bemoans that its US$150 room rates reflect poor value for money from a “hotel that resembles a Hungarian 3-star”.

The Continental, however, has one advantage over its competitors that outweighs anything they can throw back at it. Charm. That feeling of walking down the thoroughfare alongside, the way it’s lit up across from the Opera House, the creamy white exterior that rests so easy on the eyes, these are all things the glass skyscrapers can only fail to match.

It’s still one of the things that excites me most about a trip down town.

The original Type 2 splitscreen is the godfather of the modern campervan

Think campervans and the iconic Volkswagen Type 2 will immediately spring to mind as the father of the genre. Beginning life as a van in 1950 it evolved into the ‘Microbus’ popular with hippies and those following the 1960s counter-culture. From surfers and musicians to adventurous families, the first ever minivan quickly gained cult status. Most recently TV chef Jamie Oliver toured southern Europe in a 1959 Volkswagen Samba with 23 windows and a Porsche engine.

With such a rich heritage in campervans in mind, Volkswagen have made updates to the modern equivalent of the Type 2 named the California.

The world debut of the new California will be at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but Caravan Times has obtained the first pictures ahead of the launch.

Just as the Type 2 began life as a van before evolving into an iconic camping vehicle, the California is also based on a commercial vehicle. Identical in shape and design to the seven-seater T5 multivan it builds on this platform through offering a battery of equipment for campers.

At first glance the external changes to the California are subtle, more evolution than revolution. New rear light clusters and an entirely new front use the latest Volkswagen design language seen recently in the new Polo and Golf. Sleeker door mirrors and a lashing of chrome trim dress the package. Otherwise it’s business as usual for the California.

The main changes however are under the bodywork. An all-new ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Program) is standard, alongside a very useful hill-start assist. Safety is emphasised in the new range: an emergency brake light system is introduced, along with a tyre monitor display to alert driver to any loss in pressure.

A welcome addition is Volkswagen’s Side Assist lane change system first seen in the Touareg off-roader. This warns the driver of anything in the vehicle’s blind spot.

The interior has been updated to reflect the new style of the passenger car range. In comes three-spoke steering wheels, shiny new instruments and a nifty ‘recommended gear shift’ display for slick shifting.

Touchscreen satellite navigation is also available, with a USB media-interface on offer for integration with external sources.

Last but not least Volkswagen will be offering for the first time their 4MOTION all-wheel drive system (featuring fourth generation Haldex coupling). Also introduced will be the seven-speed DSG automatic transmission which will be married to a new range of cleaner, more efficient engines. All are 2.0 litre TDI diesels with four options from 84PS to a powerful 180PS.

At this stage in time Caravan Times was unable to obtain prices and full specifications for the new California range. However we were told new models will arrive in selected Volkswagen Van Centres from January 2010.

En 1492, Christophe Colomb découvre l’Amérique. C’est ce que nous apprenons tous à l’école. Pourtant, nous ne savons pas comment cela s’est passé, et nous connaissons mal les conséquences directes de la découverte de Colomb. Nous ignorons, pour la plupart d’entre nous, son histoire.

En 1992, cinq cent ans après cet événement, Ridley Scott nous propose de découvrir ce qui s’est passé dans un film, 1492, Christophe Colomb. Gérard Depardieu y incarne le personnage éponyme ; Armand Assante (L’Odyssée) est Sanchez, Sigourney Weaver (La morsure du Lézard, Le village) est la reine Isabelle. Vangelis signe une bande originale qui deviendra célèbre.

1492, Christophe Colomb est un bon film, qui nous ouvre une fenêtre sur un des événements les plus importants de l’Histoire.

            Como todo buen campamento que se precie,  éste ha estado repleto de anécdotas a cual màs delirante. Desde el paquete de comida que recibio Antonin y que cambiamos por otro, a la revision con vaiselle incluida o al concurso de lavar platos que disputamos. Pero me voy a quedar con tres:

          En Francia la pañoleta es solo un pañuelo alrededor del cuello. Ellos hacen la promesa y se colocan una chapita colgando del bolsillo derecho de la camisa. Por eso la pañola no significa mucho para ellos y en vez de cambiarla la cortan por la mitad y la vuelven a coser. Yo me he vuelto muy francesita y mi pañoleta es mitad Lons y mitad Castelnau.

Medalla de plata:

                Como los scouters no querian que me fuera (y ademàs estaban un poco enfiestados) decidieron hacerle la revision a mi coche. Miraron el aceite, el agua, el agua de los limpiaparabrisas. Sacaron las alfombrillas, descolgaron la rueda de repuesto, cambiaron los asientos y tocaron todos los cinturones. Al final no querian dejarme ir porque segùn ellos, al meter la marcha atràs no se encendia nada delante y eso era un fallo eléctrico que podia costarme la vida en la carretera. Todo esto, por supuesto, en la calle principal del pueblo entre risas , con todo el mundo miràndonos y tratàndonos de chalados

Medalla de Oro:

                 Sin duda el momento màs hard del campamento. Estaba el equipo 1 de chicos preparando su temps spi (tiempo espiritual), es un tiempo para la reflexion, hablar de cosas bonitas y eso, cuando, yo no sé aùn muy bien como, yo me puse a dar ideas y al final el temps spi fue bastante màs original de lo que es acostumbrado. Aparecia Terminator, Cristo saltando desde un helicoptero con un Kalashnikov y el We are the Worl de Michael Jackson. Delirante a la vez que espiritual.

                Ayer volvi de pasar 4 dias de campamento con mis escultas en Recoules Prévinquières (un lugar perdido de la mano de Dios) entre Montpelier y Clermont-Ferrand.

                 Ha sido genial. Y reconozco que me he llevado algunas gratas sorpresas, como el hecho de que mis tres chavales me eligieran de madrina para hacer la promesa o la nota que me dejo el primer equipo de chicos en el parabrisas del coche al irse de raid. Mis dos niñas son adorables, y no han defraudado durante el campamento, pero ellos… Ellos han sido la revelacion de la temporada, mostràndome un lado que no sabian que tenian y al final, los voy a echar màs de menos a ellos que a ellas.

               Nos ha hecho super-buen tiempo, salvo una mañana que se puso a chispear un poquillo. Pero claro, en cuanto sacamos los impermeables para disfrazarnos en plan “asesino de peli de terror adolescente”, el cielo se abrio y empezo a hacer sol. Y calor, porque cuando vas envuelto en plàstico como un sandwich; en cuanto te da un poco el sol te asas vivo
