C:\Program Files\CSL Arm Toolchain\bin;C:\Program Files\CSL Arm Toolchain\arm-none-symbianelf\bin;C:\Program Files\CSL Arm Toolchain\libexec\gcc\arm-none-symbianelf\3.4.3;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symbian\tools;

I really admire those brave souls who have ventured into the murky, piranha invested waters of Symbi

I really admire those brave souls who have ventured into the murky, piranha invested waters of Symbian programming. Maybe I’m too stupid or maybe it’s just too darn hard. The reality probably lies somewhere in the middle. Have you ever spent hours scouring the Internet for a solution to an irritating problem? And when you do find it you copy the solution verbatim since you really can’t figure out exactly why it does what it does. The SDK documentation really does not make your life easier. I have bought a few books but even the most recent one does not cover 5th edition.

I have quite a number of unfinished projects. Yes OK I lost interest. It’s so frustrating when even a “Hello World” app has a large number of files strewn all over the place. A simple concept can take pages of code. You have to keep track of the cleanup stack: what you have to put on it, when you shouldn’t or when a pointer belongs to the OS or to the man running the corner store. The emulator takes ages to start up. Your app panics with an undocumented code and it’s back to Google. Or it terminated suddenly and unspectacularly with no indication as to why. You watch endless lines of gobbledygook whiz by as your program gets compiled by a host of different tools. You tick a little checkbox hidden deep inside the bowels of Carbide. This whole system is in serious need of overhauling.

So maybe I’ll try Python. Hopefully I can gather up enough courage to join the Big Boys again later. Hopefully it’s not a snake that turns around and bites me.

Surface finish issues are especially critical in aerospace and medical applications. Chips recontact

Surface finish issues are especially critical in aerospace and medical applications. Chips recontacting the work and high or unstable Built Up Edge (BUE) are the usual suspects of poor surface finish on machined parts, regardless of material. There can be other factors, such as a poorly maintained machine or exhausted metalworking fluids, but these are seldom the case when “the last job on this machine ran just fine.”

Surface finish is critical on precision machined parts.

Here are our 5 tips that you can address on the machine to make poor surface finish go away:

1) Increase the speed SFM (especially on Carbide!). This will help reduce BUE.

2) Reduce the feed per revolution (IPR- inch per revolution). This will help reduce the flank wear.

3) Increase the top rake angle.

4) Add a chip breaker / chip curler.

5) Increase tool nose radius.

We have seen increasing speed to be especially helpful on aerospace and medical machining jobs on stainless steel. Increasing speed is also important when using carbide- carbide likes speed.

If you can see that the chip is recontacting the workpiece, then address your chip control issues first. Chip control is the first place to start. Adding chip control geometry on the tool is probably the easiest change on non CNC machines. Modifying the cam to break the chip should also be considered. On CNC’s, adding chip breaks into the program is also an easy adjustment. These are especially effective if the workpiece is a gummy material.

Built Up Edge (BUE) is impacted by three primary factors: material chemistry (which you can’t change- you already have the material); surface footage (slower speed means hot chip is in contact with tool longer, creating higher BUE); and tool geometry (the point is to slice or cut, not rub off the material).

Of course, you should make sure that your setup is rigid, your tooling properly seated, your coolant lines are delivering plenty of coolant to the tool/work interface, etc., etc.. But these 5 tips are ‘Tools You Can Use’ to improve the surface finish on your problem jobs, including stainless and other aerospace and medical materials.

`n Plattelandse Jeug.

“Ek was toe so standerd twee en Boet standerd vyf se kant.”

“Ernest Becker het gesê ‘a full apprehension of man’s condition would drive him insane.’ sê hy peinsend. “Dit is so.

Hy lag so `n droë laggie.

“Man, dit was vir jou `n triomf!

Hy was daai soort van man.

Ek dink die boormense noem dit `n beidel of so iets.”

Hy glimlag so skeefweg.

Ek was so twee, drie treë weg toe is daar hierdie helse, aardskuddende ontploffing hier agter my.

It’s possible to develop applications only with Qt SDK but it’s much easier to start with cross-platform QtCreator.

Starting to create mobile programs in Nokia’s phones with Qt for S60 is not so easy. But if you know something about Symbian or other Mobile OS programming it’s possible to start. First you need to download Qt for S60 SDK (pre release) which includes QtGui, QtScript, QtCore etc. modules but not all Qt 4.5 framework modules like desktop version. You need also to install correct S60 SDK’s (like S60 5th Edition SDK for Symbian OS) and Carbide C++ in your Windows computer before starting to do any mobile hello world program. But because it’s still early release installation is not easy so read carefully these installation notes. Good luck!

These are not cabinet scrapers (which are a skill all of their own), but instead for scraping when you need to remove a surface – such as paint, varnish, stripper etc.

I have had an opportunity to put the Linbide range through some initial trials, and as much as I normally wait until I’ve had a chance to build up a real opinion on a tool, these had me sold straight out of the box (or packaging to be precise).

Linbide Scrapers

From right to left, are a straight (or flat) scraper, a corner scraper, a profile scraper, and a cutter. All are sporting Tungsten Carbide blades which makes a lot of difference to the performance of the blade (and the durability of the sharp edge)

They are very utilitarian in their look, but that does not detract from their performance, and the handles are surprisingly comfortable and provide a good grip. The blades are replaceable (and with the straight and corner scrapers, the blades are reversable).

I took one to my front windows (external) which are increasingly desparate for a repaint. I had a mind to a couple of years back, but after trying with some sandpaper, decided that job was too big. I then tried a heat gun, with no success (it might have worked elsewhere, but not on a paint designed to survive the Australian sun). So I tried a waterblaster, and that stripped the wood apart faster than it did the paint.

So it was with interest that I gave the scrapers a crack at the task, and we had a winner! Paint came away with ease, and the wood was undamaged. I don’t need to remove all the paint, just that which is too loose to paint over. Damn, now I have even less excuses not to paint the house!

To get into corners, and over the different profiles around the windows, we have the profiled scrapers.

Radiused and Corner Scrapers

All Tungsten Carbide blades.

Now speaking of Tungsten Carbide, the final tool is called a laminate score and snap knife. It sports two carbide tips, and is designed to score laminates, and can be used quite successfully as a glass and tile cutter, and will make short work of drywall. Given its design, it will be easy for it to follow a straight edge.

Not having had a decent scraper before (the last one I had came from a $2 shop), it is quite enlightening to see what difference a quality blade can make!

These scrapers are imported in Australia by the Woodworking Warehouse: www.wwwh.com.au and cost around $20 each. You can get them from their store in Braeside, or order over the phone 03 9587 3999, or via email sales@wwwh.com.au

Ever since I wrote my first piece of code way back in the post-SSC summer vacations, I’ve been

Ever since I wrote my first piece of code way back in the post-SSC summer vacations, I’ve been fascinated by the concept of using an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). One can certainly code on a simple text editor like Notepad, Wordpad or Vim instead of using some hi-tech tool but then I don’t take pride in remembering the package names of standard APIs and libraries. Instead, I’d rather like somebody to remember all that while I can concentrate on the logic being developed. I’ve used several IDEs since the summer of ‘02 and drawn a few conclusions. Here’s the whole story…

I started off with the ol’ Turbo C++ for basic development stuff in C/C++ . Must say, there are some sweet memories associated with Turbo and even today, a glance at this IDE can bring a smile on my face! Turbo had some hidden features too. Hidden as in the ones which nobody even bothered to explore. Features like Runtime Debugger, Pattern Search and Replace, Watch Expressions, etc. The whole idea of using it in its fullest glory thrilled me like anything! However, after a few years of coding, things started unraveling and I found a new world, the one which was gonna be my world…the world of Open Source! Needless to say, I switched over to GNU C Compiler (GCC) just to explore the intricacies of the Standard Template Library (STL) and the Standard DirectMedia Library (SDL). The IDE which began this change to take place was none other than my favorite Console based Editor, the Vi Editor. I just found it geeky to code some tiny Systems Programming Practicals in Vi and then running them from the Console. It took no time to replace “Ctrl+F9″ with “gcc file.c -o file.o; ./file.o”.

Now that I had made a switch from Turbo to GCC, I had to find out something that shall make things simpler to use. Fortunately, I came to know about using Visual C++ for GCC while undergoing preliminary training sessions at Lambent (yeah, I was one amongst the ten, not so fortunate, students selected for Project Setu). Using Visual C++ was a bliss, maybe the joy of stealing stuff from Microsoft amused me then! But even that joy was short-lived and I found out another powerful IDE, this time a pure Open Source one. There I was, experimenting with my PaintBrush application developed in GCC using Code::Blocks. Now this was the first time that I found out about the true power of using a GUI based IDE. Code::Blocks could do a lot more than just compiling the code and fetching the output. Plus, there were many options to choose from, before you created a project. Tried out Dev-C++ as well, but something kept me bound to my ol’ Turbo, SIMPLICITY! After all, Turbo has helped me conquer newer vistas during my Engineering days… So if there’s a small piece of logic working at the back of your mind, and you’re on a Windoze box, Turbo has got everything you need! Whereas if you’re a Java freak, Textpad shall do the needful…

Turbo had been my code-mate all the way until I took up an Open Source project for my final year B.E., a plugin for my favourite Mozilla Firefox. Working with XML User Interface language (XUL), the Document Object Model (DOM) and Javascript didn’t really need an IDE then. It was just a few Kilobytes of code and guess what?…that was enough for all the magic our Nagpur University needs. In the meanwhile, I got in touch with one of my brothers-in-law. This guy, a passed out IITan working with Yahoo India, gave a few networking tips in Linux and some nice tools to be used to walk through millions of lines of code. And that’s where Vi Editor came back in picture. I was completely dazzled to see the prowess of Vi coupled with two effective command line tools, CTags and CScope, all of them being Unix tools.

CTags simply prepares indexes out of a source code and CScope helps us walk through the code using Vi Editor. That was the first time when I saw Ctrl+Click like feature in its making. It helped me figure out the way in which our IDEs build what Microsoft calls Intellisence in Visual Studio. But still, there was something that lacked to fulfil my requirements. I still had to manually run CTags to make all those indexes and then use the key combinations to walk through the code. True, that was simple and fast, but I needed more! Well, I also got into a bit of Java Servlet programming. My batchmates used Netbeans for the purpose but since I’ve had a feud with Sun Microsystems almost a year ago, I chose to Eclipse the Sun!

Soon enough, the college campus was replaced by this Dalmatian themed Office environment and I found myself, handling some complex code. It had been just a couple of days since I joined Umundo and they armed me with Adobe Flex Builder 3. For the first time since I began with my coding adventures, I was handling a code, so voluminous and organised, that it gave me goosebumps as I Ctrl+Clicked to get deeper within the code, especially, the framework. There was something that differentiated the coding I did at college from the one which I was about to start… Earlier, getting the code to work used to be the only objective. Whereas from now on, getting the code working was gonna be a minimum requisite to qualify as a code runner, being a coder needed lot more than that! There were many issues that I had to deal with. Memory management, complexity of code, documentation, formatted code and output, readability are a few to quote here. While the first two required my own creativity and skill, the latter comprised more of an organised and disciplined kind of work. I needed something that shall take care of my discipline so that I could concentrate more on THE code. I found most of it with Adobe Flex Builder 3.

Come winter and I was already done with a couple of ActionScript projects. It was time to move on towards some Java Application code. Adobe Flex Builder being an IDE exclusively meant for ActionScript, didn’t really solve my purpose. I needed something more subtle and complete. All this while, I had seen everybody working on MyEclipse, Carbide C++, Netbeans, XCode and the likes. However, MyEclipse, Carbide, Flex Builder and Eclipse had something in common, the core of Eclipse IDE. And No sooner than I discoverred this fact, I was clear about using Eclipse as my code-mate!

From ActionScript, Java, Java EE, Spring, Swing to J2ME, Symbian, PHP, Ruby to Struts, Hibernate… Eclipse has the most of it for almost everything. Also, using the nifty Subversion plug-in from within Eclipse was sheer bliss. I didn’t need to worry about formatting my code any more. And the best part, I didn’t commit any legal violations while using Eclipse in its full glory. There’s a lot of IDEs based on Eclipse out there, but at the same time, a plugin is also available for almost every area of development that one might think of. Also, there’s this huge developer community which keeps adding stuff to the Eclipse arsenal.

Thus, Eclipse remains my favourite choice of an IDE so far. It has given apt justice to whatever code that went through my finger-tips. Hail Eclipse… Hail the Code!

Phew…! That one hell of a post!

English translation

Pada suatu hari…
“If anyone of you, is not afraid to enter this Cave, please raise your hand”, tantang gue kepada siswa-siswi bule usia SMP dari Jakarta International School (JIS), di depan mulut Goa Sipahang, Leuwiliang, Bogor.

Tepatnya sikap was-was. Sikap waspada yang selalu membuat kita terjaga, membuat kita disiplin, membuat kita selalu menjalankan runutan safety procedure. Lesson #1.

Siap-siap…

Setelah countdown 5 detik, api carbide gue matikan. Kondisi menjadi gelap.

Lesson #2.

Waspadalah! Waspadalah!

Nieve means snow in Spanish!

Hello all E61 users, a white theme for you!

There are many other white themes out there for E61, but I wasn’t particularly fond of the original digital clock and battery/network bar. So I created one, with maximum readibility of on-screen information as the primary consideration. (Inspired by the good legibility of text on Blackberrys.)

The theme uses your phone’s default icon, the icons displayed above is not the actual.

Unfortunately, I have yet to figure out the way to have it signed for all users like most other themes do, hence you’ll have to sign the theme if you’d like to use it. In order to keep this post short, I’ll post the instructions on the first comment.

Download the theme (Unsigned)

Download the portrait version (Unsigned)

Technical details:

This theme uses 100% SVG, no bitmaps

Font used for digital clock: Myraid Pro

Text colour issue with Music Player has been improved

Note:

These themes are compatible with Nokia Series 60 Version 3 phones.

This theme is designed and tested for the E61, the E61 version will not work well on portrait screens.

The battery and signal indicators for portrait version are adapted from landscape version, hence not perfect.
