You may have noticed that I haven’t blogged for a little over a month now. A lot have happened in the last month of so. It is also no coincidence that school has started on August 29th in the meantime. Two weeks prior to that, I took some leisure considerations to furnish my apartment, just a little. My roommate and I went around to Goodwill stores eyeing for bargains that only budget-strapped college students would find gratifying.

I completed my summer internship with V&E. I recently accepted a fall internship position with the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative-leaning think tank based in Austin. One of my best friends departed for Paris to study abroad in an exchange program; I cannot express how thrilled I am for her to experience France with her own personal savings – so proud of her! What’s more? UT played against Wyoming in the first football game of the season on August 31, 2012, beating the Cowboys 37-14. The second game against New Mexico this past Saturday, UT shut out the opposition with 45-0! Offense got better in throwing the ball the second game, something that was amiss in the Wyoming match, but the overall strength of the team (defense) still requires much improvement. One of the highlights from the game had to be Matthew McConaughey’s regal wave to a sea of Longhorns from his VIP box; semi-inebriated gals decked out in burnt orange, tip-toeing in cowboy boots tried to catch a sight of the movie star.

I am thoroughly enjoying my Marketing, Finance, and Organizational Behavior classes in McCombs – which by the way is ranked #7 by U.S. News for 2013. McCombs Career Week took place this past week. I penguin-ed up in suit and tie for three days straight, as I networked with numerous recruiters from top Fortune 500 energy and consulting firms, such as ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, Accenture, Capegemini, PwC, and a number of other mid-size firms. I am focusing my energy (lolz) this semester in getting that summer internship required for my McCombs degree. I look forward to researching some of these companies in depth, participating in their info sessions, applying for internship positions, and overall leveraging the wonderful resources available to me at McCombs, from top business faculty to career advisors and to my peers.

—

I am also very excited for the two student organizations I am involved in this semester: College Republicans and Helping Hornz (a community service organization). I am an officer in each organization. Both groups are relatively small, with huge potentials for growth and development. My broader goal is to develop both organizations into self-sufficiency by motivating the people in each organization to take upon leadership roles to effect positive change. I would like to collaborate with other student organizations, innovate, come up with creative ways to engage members, and effectively implement measures to accomplish these goals. I can’t wait for what these organizations will accomplish this year! I will keep you apprised.

Tasha Smith, Program Manager for Student Outreach & Diversity for UA’s Career Center, recently assisted with Résumé Roundup, a Communication Career Week event.

The come-and-go event was intended to help students get the advice they needed to shape up their résumés before the communication job fair later that week.

Although she was thorough, I was surprised that Smith thought I should list my previous work experience before my collegiate honors. My meager work experience consists of a summer participating in a work-study-program at the university in my hometown. But my honors include writing for The Crimson White, UA’s campus newspaper, and various scholarships. I guess this proves how little I know about getting a job, but honors are more important to me, and I’m astonished that they wouldn’t be to my employer as well.

Smith also advised me to revise my résumé to include either my cumulative GPA, my journalism major GPA or my Spanish major GPA. Once it was pointed out to me, I understood how three sets of numbers would be overwhelming. Smith explained that it’s okay to choose the best GPA according to the area in which I’m trying to get a job. In conclusion, while Smith and I didn’t see eye-to-eye on every issue, I think her insight is valuable and I trust her critiques.

Last year, I started volunteering for a non-profit called GENaustin. It’s a great organization that supports girls in making good choices as they navigate through adolescence. One of the activities that GENaustin sponsors is Career Week, an open forum between professional women and middle school girls.

I’ve signed up to speak and I’ve been thinking about what I might cover in my 15 minutes. I love the work we do at On Your Mark and I will talk about that but I also want to share my thoughts on communication because I think it’s so important in career success. Three points I’ll hit on are:

1. Listening is important but so is talking.
There’s a great blog post by Whitney Johnson about how business women sometimes hesitate to speak up to share their experience or own their expertise. When women listen more than we talk, we don’t contribute as much of our own value to the discussion. I love her summary – When we listen, we acknowledge others’ experience and expertise. When we talk, we acknowledge our own. Success depends on learning to do both.

I will encourage the girls to find something they’re interested in, learn all they can about it then challenge themselves to find ways to share what they know.

2. When you talk, do it well and with confidence.
As part of my work, I present findings and recommendations all the time, often to large groups. I’m comfortable with that so my focus is on the message, not my own performance. My advice to the girls will be to think about ways they can speak with more confidence and strength. Just putting themselves in the situation where they speak in front of people – like a speech class or theater group – is good practice. It’s an investment that’s sure to pay off, whether they want to become a scientist, teacher, financial genius or even a market researcher.

3. Ask yourself first, and then seek the input of others.
Many women seem to figure out what they think about a certain subject or problem by talking it through with other people. I identify with this because when I’m faced with a question or a decision, my first impulse is to pull people in to talk about it. I’ve learned that, for me, I have a stronger voice in the conversation when I pause, take a minute to really consider what I think and what’s most important to me and then seek others’ opinions.

I’m excited to meet these girls and talk about my career. But I’m equally excited to explore their strengths today and the paths they might take tomorrow.

About 30 representatives from the Buckhead Business Assocation and the Atlanta community participated in Garden Hills Elementary‘s Career Week programming on Thursday and Friday. Bankers, attorneys, Realtors, entrepreneurs and others visited classrooms to share their life and business experience with students. Why talk about something so far off in the future? “We wanted to expose our students to a broad variety of the options that will be out there for them,” explained Garden Hills Principal Amy Wilson. “We give the Buckhead Business Association a lot of information of the curriculum that our children study so they can better tailor their message, and they clearly emphasize the general importance of staying in school. We have a lot of students who don’t have many opportunities to get an idea about careers outside the service industry.”

Businessman Amado Izaguirre (pictured, above right) has seen the professional world from several different perspectives. A native of Tunas, Cuba, Izaguirre emigrated to the United States in 1967 and began attending Garden Hills Elementary and eventually graduating from Mercer-Atlanta. He spent several years in the upper levels of the corporate world, serving as a top executive for CareerBuilder and Lexis-Nexis. After spending several years abroad and then in Chicago, he and his wife returned to Atlanta where he has resettled in the Garden Hills neighborhood and bought his own Molly Maid cleaning franchise. (His wife is a vice-president at a local bank.)

While visiting Lisa Kiani‘s third-grade class, Izaguirre stressed that while it’s too soon for students to worry about what career they’ll choose, they should spend this time grasping practical applications today that will serve them tomorrow. “The business I currently run, in general, isn’t relevant; what’s important is that I run my own business and there’s a certain skill set required to do that,” said Izaguirre, who was making his first return visit to his old school. “And you need to have those fundamental skills like reading, writing and math to run a business. I tell them, I need to understand the types of chemicals I use in households every day, and I have to use them properly. I have to think about the best way to run my business economically, which requires math skills.”

Jill Heineck, Education Alliance chair for the BBA, says the association enjoyed the opportunity to support Garden Hills. “It is really special to be able to partner with a school that values a cohesive team effort consisting of community, business and faculty members to bring real-world experiences into the classroom, giving the students a well-rounded education,” Heineck said. “The volunteers had an absolute blast with the kids. We look forward to participating in future events!”

After two meetings with the Career Services yesterday it seems that your feedback on the article had an impact. It is not quite official yet but the following changes are planned for the coming days and weeks:

An official statement of the Management

Restructuring of the Career Services (apparently there will be a re-allocation of responsibilites)

Implementation of clear processes and K.PERFORMANCE.Is beyond staff-student ratios based on the recommendations of a famous consultancy (not sure why a Business School spends money on a consultancy but…)

Survey for Career Week

Migration of discussion to Nexus to open up further “internal” dialogue

Workshops with students on how to strengthen Career Services

Renaming of Career Week to “Career Forum“

More in-depth company briefings prior to campus visits

Differentiating between company and recruitment presentation

A stronger focus on developing company relationships with student clubs and academia

Publication of a clear hierarchical structure incl. responsibility allocations (should be expanded across the school in my opinion)

More transparency and new faster feedback policies

Publication of recruitment/interview statistics

and a few more…

Obviously not all of these are a result of the blog article and coincide with some changes that have been planned anyhow but it is a good development in any case.

These are all high aspirations and it is important that they are being implemented however most probably this will take some time. However I still hope and think that it is important that the outgoing students see the changes implemented before leaving in two months.

On the other side we still have to acknowledge that they always put in a lot of efforts into attracting companies to campus, organising the career week, etc. And you can’t honestly expect them to offer you placements. We do all need to be proactive ourselves. The crisis is bad for placements but that’s was already clear when we started, no?

In any case the latest discussions and feedback from us students have been heard. Let’s see and good job hunting!!

Update [31.01.2009,21:37h]: I think that the points have been made. I have taken the comments offline for now and now it is time for a dialogue. Everybody involved has been informed.
—————————————————————————————————–

Today somebody explained the Career Week quite well in class: “Career Week was a good branding exercise for the companies…!“

ESADE itself did a great job! The networking tent was excellent and the video conferencing presentations worked really well. They also did well in attracting quite a good number of interesting companies and there where some good positions available without a doubt. That however applied to only a few company presentations I attended!

From a lecture point of view some of the company presentations were very interesting especially the questioning session.

From a presentation skill or assessment point of view, they failed! Not all but many of them failed the whole point of Career Week. A French luxury goods group was a good example!45min company presentation in Spanish, 20min questioning session. In the 65th min (5min overtime) one student finally asked the most important question: why did come you to ESADE? Answer: Oh yes, btw. we have a position in Portual but you have to speak Portuguese and preferably French! Mission of branding accomplished. Task failed!

If you give a presentation at a Career Week you should at least have a vacancy, mention the job profile at the beginning and sponsor visas in case applicants are non-residents! How about a job vacancy in Korea and you need to speak Korean! That applied to 1 student at entire ESADE. Thank you very much!

I still wish everybody applying to those companies a lot of luck and best of luck with your own job hunting in case you are also looking outside!

(For those interested in working for the French luxury goods group, I can confirm that everybody present had a handbag from its own company, men included!).

Update [27.11.2009]: I spoke to professors of IIM-B today, who are visiting ESADE this week. They confirmed that all the numbers and facts refer to MBA students and full-time positions. This was not sure previously but now it is! Apparently the figures are also the same for IIM-B, hence congratulations to both IIM’s.

———————————————————————————————————————————

I would like to share this article from the India Times with you because it is impressive (thank you for the information, Romit). We have just completed our Career Week 2009 at ESADE ourselves as have most other Business Schools around the world. With the flat world we are living in ESADE is competing with the universities around the world.

One of those universities is the Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad (IIM-A). Have a look at those facts because they are impressive:

Placed all 321 students in four days

Investment banks made 77 offers on Day Zero (first day)

76 students received offers oversears (eg. US, France, Germany, the UK, the Middle-East, Africa and Southeast Asia)

McKinsey & Co, Boston Consulting Group and Bain & Co placed 3-5 students each

We are experiencing a Financial Crisis!!!!

I think that those figures are quite stunning and have set the bar high for other universities. This also exemplifies the quality of the Indian universities and students. The statistics for ESADE are not available to me but I would love to them know them.

In the wake of the ESADE Career Week many companies have been on campus and some even took the opportunity to conduct interviews while here. As mentioned earlier I had applied to Roland Berger and in fact I had my interview on Monday. Yesterday I got my rejection letter therefore I am finally able to publicly share my experience of the interview with you.

The two interviews took one hour each and were conducted by the two consultants, Javier C. and Alexander P. First of all I would like to provide you with the questions that i was being asked so that you can get a feel how the interviews went and how you would react under the pressure.

Interview 1 (Javier C.):
Q1) What is the wholesale and retail price of a Seat Ibiza bumper and why?
Q2) What to do you suggest the construction companies and industries in Southern Spain to do now during the construction slump

Interview 2 (Alexander P.):
Q3) Give me 10 ways to find out the height of a skyscraper
Q4) What are the different company valuation techniques? What percentage of the entire value will the terminal value for the discounted cashflow method be?
Q5) What is the value chain of an insurance company? What are the cost factors and how can you improve the margin? How is it possible that insurance companies can make a profit if 100% of the cost are equivalent to 100% of the revenue?
Q6) What is the market value for electical shavers in Germany?

In addition of course I had the normal questions like, what are the take-aways from ESADE, what were difficult team situations that you had lead, etc.

One of my main questions to each consultant was why they had particularly picked me for the interview and the answers from the consultants was very interesting: they didn’t know! That makes it very difficult because only the lady from the HR knew, and she told me later, during the networking session that it was for my last job in consumer goods. Hence it has nothing to do with the telecommunication-, media- and emerging markets background, which I had figured out as a similarity from the interviewees profiles.

Generally I think that it was a great experience. Feel free to share your interview experience with me.

The final recommendation I can give: Prepare and expect the unexpected! (don’t tell the interviews that you researched them ;)

As we are currntly in the midst of the ESADE Career Week and the recruitment process we are very well aware of the quality and usability of online recruitment platforms and procedures.

Through my own experience however I have been stunned by some of the career and application pages of the corporate websites. Sometimes I wonder how oblivious some MNC are to modern day recruitment processes and what image the company website can project on the company itself. My Friend Andreu A. works for Potential Park, a consultancy specialised on the optimisation of corporate recruitment websites. A lot of the ideal optimisation standards were identified through applicant feedback and surveys and therefore I would like to ask for your support as we are all experts on that now. Hereto below you find their survey explanation and links. Hopefully soon the application procedures on corporate websites will improve!!!

nakakapagod! maski na nakaupo lang ako sa FBA. Well, wala kang magawa at nakatunganga ka lang kaya nakakapagod ¬_¬ … Kakaunti lang ang speakers ang interesting para sa akin ang speakers sa Psychology, Medical at Business lang ang convincing since lahat sila ay kinakausap ang audience at para sa akin napakainteresting kung paano nila dinicuss ang course nila ; A;

So ok, bago ang lahat ikukuwento ko kung paano nag start at kung paano nag end ang araw ko.

pagkagising ko nag pa 5 minutes pa ako since nag stayed up all night ako kasi nanalo ako ng 5 k sa gaia OTL. YOU ARE MY HERO” :’D. WHAT THE SHIT- I KNOW.

E ganun lang din, pumila kami at umakyat sa taas. Nag assembly kami ng late at nakapasok rin kami sa Auditorium ng late. So aun like 30 mins per speaker which is veryyyy boring except sa mga speakers na namention above. At sa dulo nag orientation ang Enderun sa amin.

OH ENDERUN, WHY SO PRETTY?

… O.o Boring, Inorite

although i do not plan on working for a non- profit or charity organization, i would not quite say that it is not in the realm of possibility. i attended an open discussion forum where three alumni of Elon came to answer questions about the non- profit route after college.

they touched on some interesting topics such as making enough money to sustain yourself in a non-profit, finding something that you love to do and are comfortable doing instead of settling for something that brings home the money. they also touched on graduate school and what was a factor for them choosing to return to school in their field.

one of the presenters talked about getting a hold put on his loans so that he could work for a non profit organization aroudn the world for a year and not have to pay off loans becasue he was doing government work and networking for a future job. i found this extremely interested becasue of the travel and becasue of the extra time given for him to figure out what he wanted to do with his life without having the pre3ssure of loans on his back.

it was a very good presentation and forum but they were limited to their self experiences which were broad but personalized. I mainly took an enlarged scope of thinking when is comes to what i will do once i leave Elon from the seminar and am glad i attended.
