The Milwaukee Brewers are not only interested in reaching a deal with John Lackey via free agency.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has reported that General Manager has talked with former New York Yankee and Minnesota Twins’ starting pitcher Carl Pavano.

Melvin briefly spoke with Pavano, and Pavano says he probably won’t speak with the club again until the winter meetings.

Now this means a couple of things.  First, that the Brewers are definitely looking to improve a below average starting rotation.  Secondly, that the Brewers are prepared to go with plan B if Lackey does not sign, or if Lackey does see interest in signing with the Crew in that the Brewers will not only have Yovani, but maybe Pavano as well.

If Melvin cannot add the prize arm in Lackey, Pavano is not that bad of a free agent arm, especially after what Suppan and Looper were not able to do.

Also, look for Melvin to go after Mark Mulder, Jarrod Washburn, or Jon Garland via free agency as well.  Either way, the Crew are going to sign one and maybe two arms this offseason.

Director and writer Richard Curtis(“Notting Hill” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”) brings to life the story of outlaw DJs who defied the British government for all that is worthy: drugs, sex and rock ‘n roll.

The government banished modern pop and rock ‘n roll from the mainland radio stations. Rock DJs took to the high seas to broadcast from ships docked in the North Sea. The film follows the fate of one pirate radio station called Radio Rock. They would play the most popular artists of the day: The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds.

The story begins with Carl(Tom Sturridge) arriving on the Radio Rock ship because he had been expelled from his school for smoking cigarettes and marijuana. He claims his mother sent him there to try a different way of life with his Uncle Quentin(Bill Nighy). He meets a ragtag crew who DJs twenty-four hours a day from the ship, including the ship’s cook, Felicity(Katherine Parkinson), who plays a lesbian. Carl bunks with a man called Kevin, who is nicknamed Thick Kevin(Tom Brooke) because he doesn’t process information that quickly (Kevin wore an Easter bunny costume to Christmas dinner). This is a coming of age story for Carl who learns about rock ‘n roll and loses his virginity(while it was being broadcast live).

The station becomes threatened when the prudes at the BBC ban advertising on pirate radio stations become illegal. In response a legendary, sexy and feisty DJ named Gavin(Rhys Ifans) returns from the United States to draw in millions to listen to Radio Rock (It’s appropriate “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” by the Rolling Stones is used to introduce Gavin).

Eventually, the government deems it illegal for any ship to broadcast rock ‘n roll. Of course, Radio Rock defies the orders and continues to rock out. They try to make a getaway when the prime minister’s minion goes after them, but their engine blows up. The ship begins to sink into the North Sea.

The arrangement of cast members and intertwining of comedic episodes made this film very enduring. January Jones plays Elenore, a woman who pretends to love another DJ(Chris O’Dowd) so she can sleep with Gavin. And, another DJ named Midnight Mark claims his secret with the ladies is silence and one-liner “So, shall we get to it?”

The soundtrack which features major rock ‘n roll hits help the film’s appeal where it lacks fluidity.

I really enjoyed “Pirate Radio” and have seen it twice. Overall though, “Pirate Radio” has  some truthful kernels about pirate radio off the coast of Great Britain, but in reality most of it is fictional.

Tony has gone now. He was my friend. We talked, discussed and argued for years over the matter of consciousness.  The subject would come up time and again on the tinnitus forum, where we met some years ago. Tony developed cancer but never complained. He had guts. He never gave in to the pain of this terrible illness. He fought for his life, and we followed his daily battle  to win over the cancer, with amazement. Tony’s gargantuan bravery is a lesson to me.

Among his interest was his guitar that he played well.

“You’ve mentioned Libet lots, but though I’ve never commented, I have been thinking about it plenty.

Just now I walked through the kitchen to the garden, and as I got to the back door I thought “Hmm, I just turned the kettle on as I passed it. How did that happen? I didn’t plan to do that. OK; now that it’s on I’ll make a cup of coffee”. So there’s an example of doing without consciously deciding to do and not realising until afterwards.

More on the case is getting out of the Bath.
I’ll be lying there dehydrating my skin, and think. “It’s about time I got out”, but I’ll be too comfortable to move.
Then suddenly some fifteen minutes later, I will be surprised find myself clambering out and reaching for a towel. The time interval is too long for there to be a direct link between the conscious decision and the action. And the realisation that I’m undertaking the action certainly happens a long time after the action begins.

I think that what happens is I prime the unconscious parts of my brain to take action whenever they are ready. Delegate. It is as if I ask Chris if she will get me a jar of coffee some time today. I prime the task, but leave the timing and detail to her. I find out that the task is completed some time afterwards. So it appears that the task was accomplished before I was aware of it, but I had primed it first.
I don’t think Libet is right that consciousness only has the power of veto. I think that consciousness has the power of initiation too.

I’m currently very interested in watching how many things I do, such switching the kettle on, without being aware of having consciously decided to do so.

“I think that a lot of the time it is, especially when the time delays are big, like my example of me getting out of the bath.

When it is really short as in Libet’s experiment, I think the process might
1. Conscious tells the colliculus (or something) to watch out for the blip and report back. The mri lights up a little
2. the colliculus sees the blip and reports back
3. milliseconds later, consciousness gets the message, and the reward factor causes the mri to light up a lot.
4. When asked about the order of events, consciousness rationalises. Not understanding the technicalities it tells the researcher that itinitiated the event and then it happened, not realising that it was a further few miliseconds before the realisation that the job was done.

Certainly, as you’ll know already, a lot of events happen without conscious initiation. A badly behaving driver migh cause us to unconsciously take evasive action. In that circumstance it is quite clear that the sequence is (1) event, then (2) conscious awareness of action.

I’ll look at the John Moore’s course. I could do an MSc on the mechanisms of various disease curing drugs, but it is **** expensive at 1100 ukp per module.
What I’m curious about is the mechanisms by which cancers kill – something i know nothing about. I imagine some, like mine, are non-toxic and kill by simply getting in the way, blocking and squashing things. Others might give off neurotoxins, and others might even eat into healthy tissue somehow. Maybe – I don’t know.”

The final module, the high level one, was a lot like the first, not much more to it. It got me my degee, but also convinced me that some ‘dumbing down’ had been going on in the OU. Easier courses to entice more customers. So it has put me off a bit.”

Disney’s movie, “UP”, is one I cherish. The first time I saw it was in 3D at the movies with my oldest son. Once the movie moved from the early montage to the storyline, we laughed so hard we cried.

Yet, it was that first montage that held me. This was why this movie would mean so much to me. The movie begins with Carl as a young boy. He is shy and awkward. (I have an immediate affinity for this kid.) He adores an adventurer he sees on the movie reels at the theater. (This is set in the early 20th Century to begin.) Carl then meets a young girl who truly loves adventure. The montage tells of their growing old together. It is incredibly touching. You see the joy of getting married, then wanting to save money to make that big adventure to South America, and needing to dip into that savings to take care of things in life.

You also witness the sorrow of their inability to have children, yet their joy in cherishing each other. As a young girl Ellie had started a scrapbook about the adventures she would take. She had left a section blank to document the eventual big trip they would take to South America. In their senior years Carl decides to go all out and buy two plane tickets for South America. Right after that Ellie gets sick. She never makes the trip. Before she dies, she gives Carl the scrapbook.

The real adventure happens when Carl is forced to go to a nursing home, but the morning he is to leave his house, he floats it away with a million helium balloons. He then discovers a stowaway and the fun is on.

It’s a great movie, but watching it again last night I am left with deep emotions over the journey of life. Carl felt he had disappointed Ellie because he never got her to South America. He had never looked at the scrapbook after Ellie had passed away. His love for her was so deep, but he felt he had disappointed her. Her life had not turned out like she wanted. Or, so he thought.

My greatest adventures are with the one God gave me as my spouse. I have disappointed her. When we married, there was a journey we thought we would take together and it has not happened. It may never happen. It’s possible that one day we could visit a place we have dreamed of living in as missionaries, but outside of that, I have not been able to help fulfill that dream. But what I have found as we have journeyed together is the disappointment is with myself. She has taken this journey with me and has filled the pages of that scrapbook with new things. (Carl finds Ellie did the same thing. Her great adventure was the journey with Carl.)

In these 21 years of marriage we have witnessed so many ups and downs. We have lived with laughter and sorrow. But the journey has been together and I cannot imagine life without her. I am the bumbling Carl in many ways. What I want to be all through my life is that Carl that loved deeply. The Lord has so gifted me with a precious wife and this Thanksgiving, I am thankful above all for his great grace that brought her to me.

I met Jeremy Powers about three years ago while out on a bike ride.  I actually thought he was Mike Cody when I flagged him down.  He was nice enough, said we should go for a ride sometime, then we parted ways and our paths didn’t cross again.  Until Interbike…  I got in the back of the Jelly Belly line, waited my turn, then re-introduced myself and got some free sport beans.  Again, he said we should go for a ride.  I didn’t hold my breath, as I figured he was not only too busy, but wouldn’t want to ride with a mere mortal anyway.  Two weeks later, I get a phone call from the man himself.  He actually hunted my number down from a mutual friend.  We made plans to ride, and here’s where it gets kinda weird… we actually went for a ride. 

Since then, the bromance has blossomed.  Jeremy is one of those rare individuals who is not only talented, but a true class act.  That he actually called me was only the first surprise from one of the top Cyclocross riders in world.  He’s the guy that stops on the side of the road to help a commuter change a flat.  He’s the guy that volunteers his time for charity events, even when they are not cycling related.  He’s also the guy that invites you over for a cup of coffee in the middle of the week.

Last week I took him up on that cup of coffee and found Rick Crawford sitting across the breakfast table.  I first met Rick about a year ago, when he asked if we could take a look at Jeremy’s road fit.  This time around Rick was in town to check out Jeremy’s fitness and help out with a little motor pacing in 35 degree rain.  Rick is the kind of coach that everyone should have.  He obviously knows the science behind coaching and has all the experience necessary to know how and when to apply that science.    More importantly though, he’s a really great guy and truly cares about his clients.   

So what the heck is Jeremy doing in the picture?  He’s actually working out some muscle tightness on a foam roll.  I wish it was something more interesting, but that’s it.  And Rick and Jeremy just came by to check out the office renovations, so I won’t get a cool fit story out of this either.  Maybe after Worlds…

but that’s a reindeer. truster and trustee are a fail.

A new week of Ottos here! Because of the strike, things are chaotic and strange around here and this coming week is all messed up work-wise. But we embrace chaos, we are guided and move and propelled by it, hell, we champion those who think the same! Thanks you shining patient ones, you didn’t give up on the turnip did you?

One of the great loves of my life, Carlisle; or rather Jackie, is back in town for a few weeks!

I’m so excited to have our little family back together again. It just feels so complete.
Tonight Erica, Mayra, Laura, Sarah, and I decided to go chow down at Thai Taste (i think we may have made Laura and Sarah fans as well), and it’s so great everytime we go there, because the waiters know E, M, and I already, so no need to even order. Carl decided to meet us there and we were so glad it was already closing time because i’m sure we scared the last couple of people in there when she came in and we started screaming (and Laura started crying, silly goose). We didn’t care though, because she’s finally back. Afterwards, we went to Mayra’s to watch the video of us Carl had made, and it was amazing. Carl made me the official ‘gatekeeper’ since i’m the favorite, and of course, i was honored. It broke my heart when she started crying because she had said she’d been through hell and she was so glad to be with us again. I felt the same way and the rest of the coven did too, so we formed a nice little Carlisle pileup, and all was well again. Unfortunately, she had to leave early and Sarah and Laura left as well. E and i stuck around and we just farted around in M’s room taking pictures and stuff. I love those skanks. I was mad at E though, cause she had told me at dinner that instead of seeing NM with us, she was going to see it with her sisters and Natalie. I told her to tell Natalie thanks for stealing one of my best friends and she started to pretend cry- which i never want to hear again, because even her pretend crying breaks my heart. I was still sorta mad, though. What can i say, i’m a selfish friend. And Natalie likes giving me the stink eye, so fuck if i’m going to approve of the whole situation. Anyway, whatever happens it’ll be ok. She knows i could never really be mad at her. The skank.

Well tomorrow- or tonight, rather- well be playing Obscene scrabble, the best game ever, and a coven classic, at Carl’s. Those nights are pretty much my favorite.

Here’s to the next few weeks of pure fun and amazingness.

As soon as I saw this, I felt like I needed to put it on ‘Feeling Mnml’ immediately! I enjoy various deejays for various reasons, from minimal to trance and everything in between, to sum it up I appreciate good music. Next thing to a deejay who plays great music (and respects others) is his ability to get the crowd into it and bring the energy. That is why Carl Cox is high up on my list. He rocked Movement 09 this past May, probably my favorite, or second favorite set I’ve heard (can’t decide) I am so psyched to see him this Friday at Windsor’s ‘Boom Boom Room’! I’ll be dancing all night long that’s for sure!

O autor, como visto na própria capa e comentado na contra capa do livro, tenta iluminar com a vela da ciência uma escuridão de ignorância que mais uma vez tenta obscurecer o mundo, muitas vezes com pitadas de um bom humor sarcástico.

Ao longo dos seus muitos capítulos, Carl Sagan comenta sobre casos de paranormalidade, fé, UFOs e muita, mas muita abdução alienígena. Sua visão científica sobre os casos de abduções detalhados é muito empolgante, o que considera como uma “moda”. Em uma de suas reflexões, ele diz que muitos dos casos de abdução alienígenas acontecidos no século passado, afinal neste século não houve mais nenhum relato, creio eu que a “moda” passou como Carl Sagan achou, foram induzidos por psicanalistas, o que não deixa de ser verdade, afinal como minha uma amiga minha diz, psicólogos/psiquiatras possuem poderes estranhos, eles podem fazer você acreditar que foi molestado por um familiar seu durante sua infância e você realmente pensar isso.

Tenho que salientar ao menos um fato interessante que me é descrito no livro. Em um dos mais absurdos casos em se tratando da falta e conhecimento das pessoas que já havia lido, é em que ele cita as chamadas que a polícia nos EUA recebem diariamente/mensalmente sobre seitas de satanismo. Pessoas desesperadas ligando para os oficiais sobre encontros de pessoas estranhas. O “satanismo” dito na verdade não passa de pessoas ligadas ao catolicismo, islamismo, budismo, judaísmo, religiões africanas e qualquer outra religião, então uma pessoa sem a mínima noção de cultura e conhecimento facilmente alega ser algo satânico.

Recomendo a qualquer um que tenha um pouco de ceticismo, é um excelente livro para se ler e ter. Infelizmente, Carl Sagan não mais vive conosco desde 1996, uma perda significativa, principalmente na minha opinião aos EUA, um país tão conservador e tão falso moralista.
