Hull mascot Roary the Tiger brought to his knees by City's staggering ineptitude

As Hull City last night looked to set aside their woeful Premier League form to focus on their Carling Cup aspirations, they were given no escape route by a ruthless Everton side who capitalised on defensive errors to trounce a Hull side which is devastatingly low in confidence.

The Tigers began with energy, playing some neat football in midfield and working some openings but after Everton netted the first goal of the tie after just ten minutes the game was turned on its head. Yakubu had spent ten months on the sidelines but a was a step ahead of the City defence as he received a pass into his feet and, with seeming effortlessness, cooly found the net with a curling shot that crept inside Matt Duke’s far post and had the City ‘keeper grasping at thin air. The goal was met with the deafening cheers of an estimated three thousand travelling Everton supporters, which was in turn met with a groan from the Hull fans who sensed another chance to get a win under their belts was slipping away.

Before too long, their fears became reality with two more Everton goals banged home before 25 minutes had passed, and the Tigers found themselves looking at damage limitation tactics. The Toffee’s second came after slack marking from a deep Everton freekick allowed Jo to loop a header past the beaten City ‘keeper, and number three soon followed. A long ball from Leighton Baines found Yakubu, and the big striker showed great awareness and technique to find youngster Dan Gosling whose run continued into the box before an emphatic shot easily beat a helpless Matt Duke between the sticks for Hull. The gulf in class proved too much for Hull City, who fielded a weakened side in preparation for Liverpool at the weekend, what Phil Brown maintains is his ‘priority’.

Everton were able to prove that they have strength in depth; something necessary to compete in European competitions which David Moyes is undoubtedly aiming to do. The Tigers, on the other hand, were realising just how under-equipped they are for a top level side and made two substitutions and half-time to try and change the game. It looked as though it might have worked initially as City, like they did in the first half, charged out of the blocks. Kamel Ghilas showed real commitment and endeavour throughout the game but was guilty of missing a very rare chance when, under pressure from the Everton defence he rushed a left footed strike which flew high and wide into the North stand. Hull were unable to carve any further opportunities by lumping long balls forward to an under-performing Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and struggled to find a way past the strong Everton backline in which recent acquisitions Sylvain Distin and Johnny Heitinga put in solid performances.

The Toffees netted for the fourth time when captain Leon Osman - who took to his new-found responsibility very professionally – punished more defensive indecision from the Tigers after an edge-of-the-box freekick hit the wall and spun loose in the area, falling in Osman’s path for him to tuck away easily.

Two plus points can be taken from the game for Hull City: the performances of young duo Liam Cooper and Tom Cairney who both started the game and for the most part outshone their more experienced colleagues. Despite this, it is another agonising loss for Hull supporters to cope with and for Phil Brown to deal with. After making the Anfield trip on Saturday his priority, he has a duty to ensure the result against Liverpool is more positive than last nights dismal showing.

The Tigers take on Everton in the Carling Cup this Wednesday, the first of two games against Merseyside opposition in a week for the Yorkshire club. The tie should give both sides a chance to give younger players some first team action whilst working on the fitness of some not-quite-match-fit players and giving fringe players a chance to impress.

Everton should expect to win this one, despite failing to progress very far in the past few seasons and having never won the trophy even in their years of league and F.A. Cup success. They have a very strong youth setup which has produced several success stories, not least that of Wayne Rooney. Though none who have followed since Rooney have been at quite the same level, the likes of Victor Anichebe, Jack Rodwell and James Vaughn are youth team graduates who have been first team players for The Toffees.

Hull’s youth setup paints a different picture. Tom Cairney’s superb goal in the last round of this competition gave Hull fans a very rare glimpse of a product from the club’s youth system achieving at a level higher than the reserves or youth team, though fellow Tigers youngster Nicky Featherstone has been in and out of the first team squad over the past few seasons without starting a league match. Brian Marwood was a Hull City youth team graduate who was capped for England in 1988 (whilst at Arsenal), but since then the success of young Tigers has been very limited. That’s something which has clearly been recognised by the powers that be at City and, to their credit, they have moved to change the situation. Before Hull’s match against Birmingham last weekend it was announced that they have purchased a 93 acre plot of land which the club aims to use to build a brand new youth academy and training pitch, believed to be ready in the next three years. This is excellent news for Tigers fans and players alike and, who knows, maybe Hull will be producing a Wayne Rooney of their own before too long.

In the meantime, City should be bracing themselves for a tough night on Wednesday. Highly rated youngster Jose Baxter is expected to play on Wednesday, a prospect said to be ‘more complete’ than Rooney was when at the same age. And that’s not all – Nigerian Yakubu, a reliable goal-getter at the highest level, is in the process of a return from an achilles injury which has kept him out for nine months. Toffees manager David Moyes is likely to see the game against Hull as an excellent opportunity to give the heavyweight frontman a return to first team football. Everton’s squad is littered with internationals - including new signing Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and free transfer Lucas Neill who could both start - something Phil Brown simply doesn’t have at his disposal, and the gap in quality is likely to show on Wednesday night.

There’s still no Jimmy Bullard for Hull and Gardner is still injured too, Ian Ashbee is a long term injury doubt who won’t be back until well into next year. Phil Brown is unlikely to go with too many youngsters knowing the difference in quality between Everton and Southend, but at the same time does not want to leave any first team players with fatigue come Saturday afternoon’s clash with Liverpool.

Prediction: Hull City 0-2 Everton

Teams and individuals up and down the country have been announced as winners in the 2009 Carling One-All Awards.

The Carling One-All Awards (previously named the Carling Pub Football Awards), now in their third year, celebrate the all-too-often overlooked sporting triumphs taking place every weekend on football pitches across the UK.

Teams, players, managers, referees and fans up and down the country were asked to nominate in all 11 award categories. The winning entries were judged by a panel consisting of BBC Radio Five Live’s Mark ‘Clem’ Clemmit and Carling’s Simon Pick as well as John Nagle from The Football League.

Robert Meyer was chosen as a winner in the Player of the Year category for his dedication to Hertfordshire Harriers FC. Robert has been a rock in the defensive line, and was nominated by club Chairman, Lee Stiles.

He said: “In a shocking debut season for the club, conceding over 75 goals, Rob worked hard and gave blood, sweat and tears for the cause. His performances were always glittering as he dived in for last-ditch challenges and his work-rate never stopped, even at 6-0 down.

“He is well respected throughout the club, and a fantastic character to have in any club, or friendship circle. I honestly feel that he deserves this award more than any other player in any team throughout the country.”

Meyer was delighted to receive his award: “The team had a tough season, we didn’t get many points, but we kept at it. I play centre back so I had a very busy season, we didn’t keep one clean sheet!

“I’m always running and very committed the cause. Hopefully I was chosen because I played in every game. I’m 120% committed to the cause, I’d run through brick walls to get back and get the man.

“I really enjoy playing and I try to do my best for the team. I cannot wait for the new season, where hopefully we can build on a few good pre-season results – I can’t wait to get going.”

Simon Pick, Marketing Communications Director for Carling, was on the judging panel for the Awards. He said: “Congratulations to all this year’s winners. We received nominations from clubs all over the country, and choosing the winners certainly was a difficult task. I’ve only just sobered enough to type this after drinking 28 tins of Breaker  and a cycling bottle full of metholayted turbo shandies.  The Police say they found me asleep in the fountains at Trafalger Square on Thursday morning with my pants round my ankles and a brown floater orbiting my body, with a very irate pimp pressing charges against me.  Bail barely cost a days bonus though so who gives a fuck flume ?

Anyway, the matter in hand,Lizzie’s boys, the mighty ENGERLAND are going to be world champions once again.  So let’s crack open some Carling to THAT.

Pelangi itu tampil layaknya sebuah hiasan khusus bagi pertandingan sepakbola antara kesebelasan Doncaster Rovers dan Tottenham Hotspurs di Stadion Keepmoat, Inggris, 26 Agustus lalu, tepat saat para pemain mulai masuk ke lapangan.

Pada fenomena di atas stadion tersebut, menurut ilmuwan, pelangi tampil begitu jernih dengan tampilan warna yang begitu nyata, karena tetesan air hujan yang turun berukuran antara satu sampai dua milimeter. Kalau di luar ukuran itu, pelangi akan terlihat kabur.

Como previsto no Parágrafo Único do Artigo 6º do regulamento do Campeonato Brasileiro de 2009, “A CBF poderá negociar comercialmente a adoção de uma outra denominação para o troféu de campeão brasileiro, através de contrato com patrocinador específico”. Eis que a partir dessa 22º rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, o torneio passa a se chamar “Brasileirão Petrobrás 2009″. A empresa petrolífera brasileira deixou de patrocinar o Flamengo há poucos meses atrás, num contrato que durava desde 1984 e agora investe no naming rights do principal torneio de futebol do país.

Naming rights ou direitos de nome, não é nada mais do que quando uma empresa resolve comprar ou alugar o nome de algum lugar ou evento, colocando o próprio nome da empresa ou de algum produto. Por exemplo, aqui em Belo Horizonte, o antigo Marista Hall se tornou Chevrolet Hall.

Não é a primeira vez que a Série A tem seu nome associado à de uma empresa. Em 2005, a Nestlé comprou os direitos do torneio, que se chamou “Taça Nestlé Brasileirão 2005″, sendo que o Corinthians, campeão daquele ano, além da tradicional taça do Campeonato Brasileiro, também ficou com a Taça Nestlé.

O segundo torneio mais importante do país, a Copa do Brasil, esse ano, pela primeira vez também teve seu nome associado a uma empresa. A Kia Motors patrocinou o torneio, que se chamou “Copa Kia do Brasil 2009″.

Naming rights no futebol são comuns em torneios internacionais. Na Europa temos a Liga Sagres (1ª divisão portuguesa), Liga Vitalis (2ª divisão portuguesa), Carling Cup (a Copa da Liga Inglesa). Essa última, inclusive, tem seus nomes ligados a alguma empresa desde 1982. Na América do Sul temos a Libertadores, que entre 1998 e 2007 foi a “Copa Toyota Libertadores” e a desde o ano passado se chama “Copa Santander Libertadores. Dos torneios da Conmebol também temos a “Copa Nissan Sudamericana” e a “Recopa Visa Sudamericana”.

Talvez esse seja o primeiro passo para um campeonato brasileiro mais organizado, em padrão próximo ao europeu. Quem sabe um dia seja regra os clubes jogarem com numeração fixa, nomes dos jogadores nas costas, patch da competição na manga da camisa… Além, claro, de um calendário melhor ajustado, jogadores de melhor qualidade, estádios confortáveis e seguros.

The Waldorf Hilton’s dining room is rumored to be decorated in a close replica of the Titanic’s dining room.  Though, according to the concierge, that fact has not been proven  to be true, but they are similarities between the two.

The room can be used for general overflow when conferences are in town, or rented out for 5,000 pounds a night.

I, then, intended to check out Jack the Ripper’s tour. But as English weather usually goes, it rained. So, I hit up St. Paul’s Cathedral. St. Paul’s Cathedral was survived the WWII bombings and is an inspiration to all of England for rebuilding and survival. It took over 30 years to complete. St. Paul’s is also famous for being the location of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana’s wedding.

The visit was interesting, the monuments are impressive and the artistry is amazing. I even climbed up to the whispering room, much like the rotunda in the Capital, if you whisper along the wall, your friend should hear you on the other side. This is, however impossible to verify because EVERYONE is doing the same thing!

I then made my way to Primark. The Ross Dress for Less of the UK. One word: MADNESS! People were pushing, cutting in front of you, blocking your path, clothes on the floor, everywhere! I did manage to find a pretty awesome jacket (bomber jacket c 3/4 sleeves, dirty blue) for 10 pounds! I would be a fool to not buy it!

Later that night we checked out a local pub (name unknow), complete dive. I tried a Carling but met two bloaks, Kevin and Martin. Super funny, both of them.  We are all supposed to meet up on Friday for Disco Kareoke!

Realized via a conversation with Caroline, English guys have big butts and great legs. I totally agree with this and find it nice.

Changing of the guard. Done on odd days regardless if the Queen is in residence. Luckily for me she WAS!  Unlucky for me, the tube is being repaired and I got rerouted and was late, so I had to deal with the tourists and their luggage, buggys, small children, complete lack of awareness of traffic flow, personal space, and deodorant.

I got a few good shots and then completely gave up. I just can’t tolerate lack of manners or deodaurant. Here’s what I’m sure it looked like.

Then met up with Caroline at the tkts booth for show tkts. The choices were decent, Hairpray, Avenue Q, Chicago. We got 10th row tix, on the ground for 22pounds for Chicago!!!! How exciting is that!! The great thing is that the theaters are naturally small, so all the seats are going to be great!  The show was showing at the Cambridge Theatre, starting Michelle Williams, from Desitny’s Child.  She has the legs of a prepubescence girl, not athletic compared to the trained dancers on stage,  but that actually helps her character of the mousy Roxie Hart.

We  ate lunch at the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, famous for being not only old, but for the haunting place of Charles Dickens! Had vegetarian pie with chips and veg (pot pie with fries and peas), paired with a Ol Chess Cheese Bitter Beer, served in Sam Smith’s pubs.

I tried to get a pic with a group of Bobbys in front of the Temple Bar, was told that only with a Bobby that is alone. Groups of Bobbys usually have a special event going on and can’t pose.

Med tanke på vad jag gör just nu känns en repris avföljande inlägg lämpligt på alla sätt. Glaset finns kvar.
Jag tröttnade på att leta fungerande proxyadresser för att komma åt BBc iPlay. Helt sonika gick jag och köpte mig en prenumeration på en brittisk ip-adress via FoxyProxy. (Att betala saker med priset angett i £ är i det närmaste en sexuell upplevelse.) Och här sitter jag och lyssnar på BBC Five Live för det facila priset av £8/månaden.

När Der A-mann och Frau A-mann blev ett par tillbringades bröllopsresan i världens bästa stad. Vi fick låna en lägenhet av en god vän i den neobrutalapittoresktistiska staden South-end-on-Sea.

-Allvarligt, vem f*n orkar sexa till det på bröllopsnatten? Det måste vara en av vår tids största myter. Du skall under dagen: duscha, klä dig, åka till kyrkan/vigsellokalen, gå till fotografen, åka på kalas, dricka, äta, dansa, fotas av släktingar, prata och vara trevlig. En romantisk natt på det? I think not.-

Att resan var lyckad säger sig självt. Det var ju London. Som avskedpresent från min tillfälliga hyresvärd, Roger, fick jag det här superduperfina glaset. I det dricker jag enbart engelsk öl. I just det här fallet ser ni en nyupphälld Boddington stå till sig.

Jag skulle ljuga om jag sade att jag inte saknade min gamla lya i Mile End just nu. Fast där i lägenheten hade jag naturligtvis inte suttit en kväll som denna, hade stått på Upton Park med ett stort flin och sett Hammers spöa det lilla skitlaget från andra sidan floden.. Jag har längtat efter det här mötet sedan bägge låg i Championship senast. Det var frustration och aggression i sin vackraste form då, likaså idag.

Nedan kan vi se ett fint exempel på hur bra det engelska fotbollsförbundet lyckats i sin strävan att få bort problemen kring arenorna. Avskaffandet av ståplats ger verkligen en trygg och fin familjestämning, där alla känner sig välkomna!

More condensed shite today from our friends at the Daily Nutcase.

They have taken time off from persecuting single mothers, asylum seekers and brown people to put together a piece of frolicking froth about Carling’s parent company Molson Coors wanting a minimum pricing regime for alcohol products in the UK.

Wonderful PR for the company – as it appears on face value that this selfless corporation with more money than God has decided to slice itself off from the supermarkets and other big breweries in a noble attempt to save the nation’s livers. There they are, shaking their head wistfully, muttering “it must be done”, before unzipping their trousers, dropping the under garments below and raising their butt cheeks in the air for a bit of firm regulation rogering. The message appears to be clear – Molson Coors is taking a big hard one for the team.

All very good … but unfortunately I smell the shit of bull. Leaving aside some of the dubious claims in the article (Molson Coors have been working with the BMA and the CMO have they? Methinks not sunshine…) the fact is that if this change was to be enacted it is extremely unlikely that Coors’ brands would be hit because if they were you could bet your left bollock Coors would be retracting their flies faster than you could say “profit warning ahoy”.

Although minimum pricing is a very vague proposal at the moment, the Government and the health professional lobby have made it clear they are targeting the tramp tipples – the low grade white lightening kind of affairs that really do sell at 50p a can and are the loss leaders for supermarkets and offies. They are not after the more medium to high end products or anything sold in pubs where breweries tend to snaffle up higher profit margins. After all politicans are not, contrary to popular opinion, morons, they know that there are votes in the aisles of Oddbins and Tescos.

A prime example is the 50p a unit proposal – all this would mean is that a pint would have to cost in your local the grand spanking total of at most  … erm, £2.50. Well, show me a collection of pubs that sells a pint for under £3 anywhere south of Doncaster and Ill show you a dancing gerbil that can give an elephant a blow job while doing the fandango.

Minimum pricing looks like it may well be headed this way as the political consensus is there and lets face it, its an easy policy to sell and implement. But will it stop 22 year old drinking themselves to death or indeed affect many people reading this page? Nope, it wont a single jot.

I have no problem with a serious debate about this issue – but can it please be conducted without the Mail giving an insincere brewery a hand shandy during the conversation?
