As the men’s soccer team travels to Reese Stadium to face off against the Bulldogs tonight at 7 p.m., Yale will have to find a way to score on a team that hasn’t allowed a goal in a full month.

The last goal that the Huskies allowed was against Rutgers in New Jersey during a 2-1 loss on Sept. 20. The No. 17 Huskies (8-2-3, 6-1-1 Big East) have not lost a match in their last seven contests, six of which have been Big East conference games. The Bulldogs (4-5-3) are coming off a 4-3 win over conference rival Cornell.

Within the past month, the Huskies have won a handful of awards. Kwame Watson-Siriboe won Big East Defensive Player of the Week; Carlos Alvarez was awarded Big East Rookie of the week for the second time and earned a spot on the Men’s College Team of the Week.

Many of the players have improved their skills since its 3-0 loss to Boston University. During the stretch, Watson-Siriboe routinely held Pittsburgh and Harvard offenses in check, preventing them from reaching goalie Josh Ford. Alvarez amassed two goals and three assists during the three games and has been a staple in the UConn midfield.

Senior Mike Pezza has returned to the field after suffering a food injury. He has since returned and put up an assist and a goal during the past two games. The Huskies now have all the original starters from their first game in early September.

Alvarez made adjustments and now looks comfortable playing alongside Toni Stahl and Tony Cascio. Freshman Stephane DIOP has become a big threat on the sides of the field, with his ability to make defenders miss while still in control. Cruz Hernandez has also stepped up and become a reliable fifth defender coming off the bench. With these pieces in place, the Huskies have created a noticeable bond on and off the field.

The more Riptide dissects Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez’s proposed budget cuts in order to make up a $427 million shortfall, the more we realize el alcalde fuerte is not gonna mess with his executive staff’s perks.

The mayor’s spokeswoman, Vicki Mallette, confirmed Alvarez will not ax the money used for the staff’s car allowances.

“Colleagues,

The 1st County Budget Hearing concluded at about 4:30 am today. The Board of County Commissioners voted for a total millage rate that will generate less revenue than that proposed by Mayor Alvarez.

At the hearing, Cultural Affairs Council Chair Adolfo Henriques, accompanied by Councilors Rosa Sugrañes, Xavier Cortada and Jorge Luis Lopez, spoke to the County Commission on behalf of the Council and the cultural community and asked for the full restoration of funding for our Department’s grants programs. In addition, numerous speakers also addressed the County Commission making the case for restoring the cultural budget, including School Board member Marta Perez, former School Board member Betsy Kaplan. The testimony from representatives of more than 20 cultural organizations, ranging from major cultural institutions to small neighborhood groups and artists, reflected the fortitude, passion and vision that have come to define our cultural industry.

During the subsequent discussion among County Commissioners, several Commissioners expressed support for program restorations in various areas of the budget, including our Department’s budget. Ultimately, a majority of the County Commission voted to set the operating millage at a flat rate; overall, this will result in approximately $17 million less in revenue than what was proposed by Mayor Alvarez.

It is important to note that this millage rate represents the “ceiling” – the budget that will be worked on over the next two weeks and adopted on September 17th cannot exceed this millage limit.

Mayor Alvarez and the County Manager commented that it would be very difficult to achieve the various budget restorations discussed given that the County Commission voted on a millage rate that is even lower than that recommended by the Mayor. The Mayor and County Manager also committed to working cooperatively with the Commission to find solutions wherever possible.

The County Commission is scheduled to hold a budget conference committee meeting on September 11th. The second (final) County budget hearing is on Thursday, September 17, at 5:01 pm in the County Commission Chamber.

I will share our Council Chair Adolfo Henriques’ message to me after the hearing, “Get some rest – our work has just begun.”

Dear Cultural and Community Leaders,

We need your help today. The proposed County budget eliminates all $11.168 million of general fund support for the grants programs of the Department of Cultural Affairs – if enacted, this would “zero out” grants to approximately 400 cultural organizations.

As Chair of the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Council, I am urging you to take the following important actions now to help save the County’s cultural arts budget.

• Personalize and send e-mails, faxes and letters to every County Commissioner, the Mayor and the County Manager (click here for sample message).
• Call every key County official and emphasize specifically how important County arts support is to you and/or your cultural organization (County contact list available here).
• Attend and register there to speak at the two upcoming County Commission Budget Hearings where the County’s budget will be discussed and finalized for the coming year. Both Budget Hearings are being held at 5:01 pm on Thursday, September 3 and Thursday September 17 in the County Commission Chamber, 111 N.W. 1st Street, 2nd Floor. Crowds are expected so get there early and be prepared to wait to make your case (a fact sheet with important information about the impact of our cultural community is available here); you will have two minutes to speak.

At a recent town meeting convened by our Cultural Affairs Council, County Commission Chair Dennis Moss and I emphasized how serious this budget crisis is and how critical it is for as many of us as possible to make our voices heard right now. It was acknowledged that Mayor Alvarez, the County Commission and County Manager George Burgess have a track record of supporting the cultural community. It is essential to keep your message positive, focus on the importance of County support to the arts – and to your organization – and personally tell your story about the impact of the arts on the economy, jobs and our community’s families and children. Please forward this message to as many people as possible.

Together, our voices can make a difference in fully restoring County support for the arts. Thank you for your help.

ESMAILYN GONZALEZ CARLOS ALVAREZ

The young Dominican infielder who was at the center of the scandal that got Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden fired may not be allowed to play baseball in the U.S. this year. Two years ago, the Nationals signed 16-year-old shortstop Esmailyn Gonzalez to a club record $1.4 million bonus.

It turned out that Gonalez was not only NOT 16-years-old (he was closer to 21) but he wasn’t even named Gonzalez. His real name was Carlos Daniel Alvarez Lugo. The Gonzalez (Alvarez) signing also triggered an FBI investigation following rumors of kickbacks. That investigation eventually ensnared Bowden and his assistant Jose Rijo. It was Rijo who originally suggested that the club sign Gonzalez.

Now, Alvarez has been denied a visa to work in America so far this year. Worse, Nationals president and interim GM Stan Kasten says the shortstop’s visa difficulties may be so great that he won’t be allowed into the country all year.

De nuevo en Mugumu, esta vez sin voluntarios, pero con otro héroe muy comprometido. Carlos Álvarez, nuestro expatriado en Serengeti.

Durante al menos un año y esperemos que más Carlos, arquitecto con 5 años de experiencia en India, y un profesional de la fotografía (y de la cocina japonesa…) va a estar supervisando las labores de construcción del proyecto, coordinando el equipo y contándonos a través del blog sus vivencias.

Apenas lleva una semana aquí, y ya sé ha remangado hasta los codos y metido de hieno en faena.    

El equipo de coordinación lo completa Charles, ingeniero civil tanzano, que se traslada a Mugumu con su mujer y su hijo de tan sólo 2 meses. Otra apuesta contundente.

Carlos y Charles (charles al cuadrado) tienen una gran responsabilidad por delante, hacer realidad los planes.

Junto a ellos, están también trabajando desde el comienzo del proyecto el Dr. Rwakatare y Nicolas Shilangila, los Próject Officer responsables de la mobilización comunitaria, la formación y las campañas de sensibilización.

¿ En qué punto estamos?

Pues bien, Rwakatare y Shilangila han continuado durante este tiempo organizando a la comunidad, promoviendo buenas prácticas higiénicas y formando a la comunidad.

Las malas noticias son que la licitación lleva mucho retraso, y es lo que en estos momentos nos ocupa a Carlos, a Charles y a mi. Vamos a darle el empujón definitivo para que cuando yo vuelva a España, a finales de marzo, ya esté lanzada y podamos recuperar el tiempo perdido.

Ha llegado la hora de la verdad. Ponerse a construir. Bravo por los valientes que aquí se quedan para hacerlo. Cuentan con todo el apoyo de los que, de un modo u otro, estamos implicados en esto.

Los que seguís el blog, aunque sabemos que ha estado muy parado, seguid atentos y sobre todo, mandadle a Carlos vuestros mensajes. Aquí, en esta pequeña porción del paraíso, se puede llegar a estar muy solo y uno puede sentirse muy lejos de los suyos.

The Minister of Science and Innovation was invited to speak at this event. She spoke about the major investment that will be put in R&D in order to beat the national crisis.

The main solution, she says, is ¨the cooperation between the government with superior education along with scientific research and innovation. ¨

For this, she talks about the supplement of the investment that will be put into R+D+i. On top of the already decided amount, there will be additional resources of 490 million euros destined to go to the ´Plan Español´ for the economic stimulus and ¨to strengthen the thread that holds the productivity of our country¨.

She also speaks of European-level cooperation, and even Iber-American cooperation. Although in times of crisis, ¨Spain must still maintain its outstanding commitment of being both a cultural and political link between both regions of the world.¨

El programa es trasmitido por Frecuencia Latina (canal 2 Lima, canal 11 Piura- señal abierta) y es conducido por Carlos Álvarez y Jorge Benavides.

El Especial del Humor tiene una duración  de dos horas y media (9.00 PM- 11.30 PM) los días sábados, donde  se desarrollan espacios en los cuales satirizan a personajes públicos del mundo de la política  y del espectáculo. Por ejemplo: Alejandro Toledo, Alan García, Jorge Del Castillo; o del espectáculo, como Magaly Medina, Paolo Guerrero, Claudio Pizarro.

Cada espacio está dividido en diez tandas comerciales aproximadamente  y cada tanda contiene alrededor de  catorce mensajes publicitarios de Incafarma , cementos Sol, BCP,  pollos Chicken, agua Vida, Cristal , Fondo mi vivienda , Powerade, EFE, Intifan , Ojo, Apronax, Claro, Tottus, publicidad del canal, Donofrio -Alaska, Tampico, publicidad de la película Pantera Rosa, Farmacias Arcángel, San Luís, CocaCola Fest, Maltin power, sopas Ajinomen, Claro, KFC, Layconsa, Aval, Cibertec, CocaCola e Inka Cola retornable, Movistar, Donofrio, Radio Mega, Cielo, Pepsi, Banco Financiero,Cifrut, Plaza Vea, Caral 700, Helados Universal.

El día sábado 14 de febrero del 2009 a horas 9 .00 PM, se inició una nueva temporada del Especial del Humor ,donde presentaron espacios ya conocidos  por la gente como: Elian y Choledo, Philip Butters o Philip Quaker, Rómulo Ratón(sin duda el más aclamado por el público ), las tías de la Molina y Lady Bardales.

Lo que he podido apreciar al analizar el Especial del Humor es que por el afán de ganar más anunciantes en las tandas publicitarias (que desde ya son muchos), el programa le da a la gente lo que quiere y no lo que necesita. En otras palabras, alimentan el morbo de las personas con palabras de doble sentido, palabras os, aprovechan el dolor de la gente ante la coyuntura política para mofarse de los personajes que son miembros de ésta con el fin  de alcanzar mayor sintonía.

Ligan el entretenimiento con el doble sentido, las palabras os, jergas, etc. Cuando la diversión debe ser sana y educativa, más si el programa está aún en horario de protección al menor e incluso donde se etiqueta al programa para mayores de catorce años en compañía de sus padres.

El Especial del Humor podrá ser un programa entretenido, pero debe bajarle el tono a los contenidos de su programa y más si se trata de un horario familiar de 9 PM.

De lo contrario, cambiar el horario del programa a partir de las 11.00 PM. Para proteger a los menores de edad. Si queremos progresar, debemos dar contenidos más productivos a la población , porque estos programas hacen que la gente siga siendo ignorante y sin deseos de superación.
