_ ¡Oiga!¡Que no he acabado!
_ ¡Diez minutos!-. Exclama, y se lleva el plato.
Me levanto y escapo.
_ ¿Qué sabe usted si tengo hambre o no?

When Troy Tulowitzki struckout on that nasty slider from Brad Lidge, the Colorado Rockies’ off

When Troy Tulowitzki struckout on that nasty slider from Brad Lidge, the Colorado Rockies’ offseason officially began. Just like with every team, the Rockies face some difficult offseason decisions.

One of those difficult decisions for the Rockies is whether or not to trade RF Brad Hawpe.

The Rockies also have a surplus of young, talented outfielders. Seth Smith, Dexter Fowler, and Carlos Gonzalez seem to have the three outfield spots locked down for 2010.

Hawpe could be dealt this winter

And with Hawpe due *$7.5 million in 2010 and having a club option for $10 million in 2011 (if Hawpe is traded, he can void the 2011 club option), Hawpe seems to be the odd man out in Colorado.

I think the Rockies will make every effort to trade the 2009 All-Star. But what type of player are they trading and who would be interested in Hawpe?

Let’s a look at Hawpe and what he brings to the table…

Positives

Hawpe is a remarkably consistent offensive player. For the last four years, Hawpe has averaged .288/.384/.518 with 25 HR’s in 146 games. And if you look at his numbers on a year to year basis–he does that every year.

It’s kind of freaky to be honest.

Hawpe also crushes right-handed pitching. In 357 AB’s against right-handed pitching in 2009, Hawpe hit .303/.403/.552 with 17 HR’s.

And for those of you who think Hawpe is just a product of Coors Field–he is not. He hit more HR’s on the road in 2009 than he did at home (14 to nine). For his career, Hawpe has hit 54 HR’s at home and 57 on the road.

Also, his OPS for his career at home is .887 and on the road is .864. Not much difference.

Negatives

While Hawpe might a remarkably consistent offensive player, his defense is flat-out offensive. He might be one of the worst defensive RF’s in baseball.

His UZR/150 in 2009 was -19.5, which puts him amongst the bottom of major league RF’s. What ever he brings to the table offensively, he takes away from it with his defense.

Hawpe can’t hit left-handed pitching. Hawpe’s career OPS vs. left-handed pitching is 158 points lower than it is against right-handed pitching. If Hawpe plays against a lefty and with his defense, you might as well just bring back Terry Shumpert to play the OF.

Here is another thing that bothers me about Hawpe and is a negative. Every time the Rockies are in prime time, Hawpe just disappears. He only has two extra-base hits in 42 career postseason AB’s.

How telling was it that Hawpe only got four AB’s against the Phillies in four games? He was one of the Rockies best offensive players throughout the year and he didn’t even sniff the batter’s box in the postseason.

Jim Tracy didn’t even go to Hawpe against righties. He used Jason Giambi as his primary left-handed pinch hitter off the bench.

Now that we looked at Hawpe as a player, what teams would be interested in trading for Hawpe? Here are some teams that makes potentially make sense for Hawpe…

Boston Red Sox – If they don’t re-sign Jason Bay and Matt Holliday re-signs with the St. Louis Cardinals, who is going to play LF for the Red Sox? If the Red Sox could live with Bay’s defense in LF, they could certainly live with Hawpe in left.

New York Mets – The Mets are desperate for any type of power infusion and need a left fielder. However, having an OF of Hawpe, Carlos Beltran (bad knees), and Jeff Francoeur (-3.2 UZR/150) means a lot of balls will be dropping in at cavernous Citi Field.

Chicago Cubs – The Cubs will do their best to trade Milton Bradley this offseason, leaving a hole in right field. Hawpe could give the Cubs the left-handed power hitter they have wanted since last year.

Atlanta Braves – If the Braves had their perfect world, their OF in June of 2010 would look like Nate McLouth in left, Jordan Schafer in center, and Jason Heyward in right.

If the Braves feel Schafer is still not ready for prime time yet, the Braves could look to Hawpe to take over for Garrett Anderson in left.

Kansas City Royals - The Royals need some offense and the Rockies would like some young relief pitching. Dayton Moore trades young relievers for DH-types all the time.

One of the issues the Rockies would run into if they decide to trade Hawpe is that there are a lot of DH-type players (Carlos Delgado, Russell Branyan, Hank Blalock, etc…) available on the open market this winter. Why would an American League GM trade prospects and add salary, when they can just add salary via free agency?

Hawpe figures to be one of the most talked about names on the trade market this winter. We will just have to wait and find out if the Rockies trade their right-handed crushing, poor fielding right fielder.

Despite a desperate three out rally attempt in the 9th inning, the Colorado Rockies were eliminated

Despite a desperate three out rally attempt in the 9th inning, the Colorado Rockies were eliminated from the playoffs by the Philadelphia Phillies. Rockies shortstop, Troy Tulowitzki, who was struck out by Phillies closer Brad Lidge for the third out in the 9th inning, refused to let the game end.

“C’mon guys, we can still do it,” said Tulowitzki, frantically taking cuts against imaginary pitches. “We’re not out of it yet. Hey Lidge, is that all you got?!?”

As Tulowitzki was taking hacks, Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, who was on second for the third out, repeatedly ran around the bases until collapsing.

“Did we do it?” said the obviously fatigued and bewildered outfielder. “Rocktober….we can’t let Rocktober end!”

The futile comeback mercifully ended when the stadium staff finally decided to turn off the lights.

The Colorado Rockies were eliminated from the postseason tonight after losing game 4 of the Division

The Colorado Rockies were eliminated from the postseason tonight after losing game 4 of the Division Series against the Phillies 5-4. It was a great series. It’s not hard to say that it was the best series because it’s the only one that wasn’t a sweep. Huston Street ended up getting back to back losses in games 3 and 4. He was automatic in the regular season, saving 35 games out of 35 opportunities, 61 and 2/3 innings pitched, 70 Ks and 13 BBs. After coming into a tie game in the 9th last night and giving up the lead, tonight he came in the top of the 9th with a 5-3 lead. With 2 outs and a man on second, the Rockies were one out away from making it a 5 game series. Street missed his spot to Howard, and Howard made him pay, doubling to right and scoring 2. The next AB Werth singled and brought Howard home for the 5-4 lead the Phillies took to the end. Lidge came in the bottom of the 9th w/ 2 outs and struck out Tulowitzki with a man on first and second. I like both Street and Tulo, so it was hard seeing Huston blow back to back games and Tulo making the last out in consecutive games.

Other notable items included Cliff Lee pitching lights out, only 2 ER and 16 1/3 IP between his 2 games. I’m not so sure I would have taken him out in the 8th in this game. Carlos Gonzalez had 10 hits in the series, he was on fire. There was an interesting play in the bottom of the 8th when Dexter Fowler actually hurdled Utley on a ground ball to 2nd. It was incredible to see the athleticism that Fowler used to make absolutely no contact with Utley to avoid baserunner interference. Rollins didn’t catch Utley’s throw which was he had to stretch for.

Fowler hurdling Utley

I wanted to see the Rockies advance, I like their team, Howard, Tulo, the youth, their crowd, their ballpark, and the Phillies had it all last year. They did accomplish most wins in a season for their franchise with 92 games.

So we’re down to 4 now (and I’m 4 for 4 on my picks so far…haha). Phillies and Dodgers start Thursday, Angels and Yankees start Friday.

I would like to first off thank the inventor of DVR. It really is one of the best inventions ever. I

I would like to first off thank the inventor of DVR. It really is one of the best inventions ever. It allows to watch shows, programs on sporting events on your time.

Last night I used this wonderful invention to record Game Three of the Philadelphia Phillies-Colorado Rockies series last night. With the game starting at 10:00 ET, there was no way I was staying up to watch this game.

I watched the first four innings last night, woke up this morning, and watched the remaining five innings. Truly fantastic.

While DVR allows you to watch everything you want to see, it allows you to watch things you have no interest in seeing during the show, program, or sporting event. Things like–more awful, hideous, terrible, inexcusable umpiring.

What the heck is going on with the umpiring during these playoffs? It has been truly terrible. I think the home plate umpiring has been okay. For the most part, the home plate umpires have been consistent with their umpiring

But the issue is–they are missing obvious calls. And it is happening time and time again throughout these playoffs. As much as I would hate to see all forms of instant replay in baseball, I really think Bud Selig and his band of merry owners are going to have to start to give it some serious consideration moving forward.

Last night was a perfect example of the umpires missing the obvious calls. In the top of the ninth, with the game tied at five, Chase Utley came to the plate with one out and Jimmy Rollins on second.

Utley hit a ball that went off his leg in the batter’s box and then rolled into fair territory. Utley was able to beat the ball out for an infield single.

However, not only did the ball hit him in the batter’s box which is a foul ball, but Utley was out at first base as well. Not did the umpires get the call wrong once, but they compounded the issue by getting the call wrong a second time.

As you can see Utley is clearly out

Two terrible calls on the same play. Rollins advanced to third on the play and then the Phillies took advantage of the situation when Ryan Howard hit a sac fly to give the Phillies the lead.

I hate to harp on bad umpiring because it really overshadowed what was a really good game. And despite this game being played in 30 degree weather, it really was a good game.

In a back-and-forth game, the difference at the end was the backend of the Phillies bullpen. Ryan Madson, Chad Durbin, and Brad Lidge didn’t allow a hit for the last three innings and really shut the Rockies down.

With both starters being completely useless–JA Happ and Jason Hammel, you knew this game was not only going to come down to the underbelly of the bullpens, but the backend as well.

Lidge got the save last night

Madson, Durbin, and yes, Lidge all got the job done. And let’s give somewhat credit to Lidge. I don’t care how much of a Philly homer you are, when Lidge walked Carlos Gonzalez (the best player so far in this series on either team) you had to being thinking here we go again.

Then he walked Todd Helton with two outs and then about four million Phillies fans said “I can’t watch right now.” But Lidge got his act together and managed to get Troy Tulowitzki to pop out to end the game.

I said somewhat credit earlier because Lidge really threw a hanger to Tulowitzki. That last pitch was made to be hit 450 feet. Tulowitzki just missed it.

But the bottom line is this–one inning, no runs, no hits, and a save for Lidge in a tight game. The Phillies and their fans aren’t interested in style points, they are interested in results.

The result was a 6-5 Phillies win and a 2-1 advantage in the series.

Game Four is tonight at 6:07 ET. Charlie Manuel should be thanking Mother Nature for the rest of his life. Because of the snow out, Manuel can come back with Cliff Lee tonight and if necessary, Cole Hammels tomorrow.

I am convinced Manuel had no idea who he was going to start in Game Four. Now he gets to come back with Lee. Not a bad deal for the Phillies.

For as well as Jason Hammel started game 3 aside for a solo homerun to Chase Utley, Hammel did retir

For as well as Jason Hammel started game 3 aside for a solo homerun to Chase Utley, Hammel did retire 9 of the first 10. But it all fell apart for him in the 4th inning with a 3-1 lead. Hammel not able to find the strike zone, loaded the bases. Then walking Raul Ibanez to allow the Phillies to tie the game at 3. A ground ball hit between third and short and poorly played by Atkins in my opinion, gave the Phillies the 4-3 lead, resulting in Hammel being removed in the 4th with 2 outs for Matt Belisle.

Carlos Gonzalez continues to be hot in the playoffs thus far. Gonzalez was 3 for 4 on the night with a homerun, 3 runs scored and a stolen base. Not to mention a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

A series of bad calls from behind the plate and struggles of Hammel, and Contreras didn’t do the Rockies any good. Huston Street as well struggled in the 9th. The series is not over and I don’t believe the Rockies are thinking that, though some fans may be. The Rockies know they let last night’s game get away from them and though the umpiring was it’s usual, below average in quality. The Rockies can only try to bounce back this afternoon with the game 4 matchup again of Cliff Lee and Ubaldo Jimenez as we saw in game 1.

Should it happen that the Rockies lose in the game this afternoon, we can take some comfort in that the Rockies are the only team in the first round of either division series to not be swept from the playoffs. It may not sound like much, but it has to account for something.

It’s October 1st, the start to Rocktober 2009 can officially begin.

The Rockies pounding of the Brewers last night 10-6 and Atlanta’s loss to the Marlins 5-4 now has the Rockies magic number for the playoffs at 1. The math is simple, win today or an Atlanta loss means the Rox are in the playoffs. Still the Rockies have a slim shot at winning the division only 2 1/2 games back of the slumping Dodgers who have the day off today.

Last night’s win gave the Rockies their 3rd in a row and Jason Hammel his 10th win on the season. Helton, Gonzalez and Tulo all homered for the Rockies and the bullpen was near perfect on the night following Hammel. Torrealba continues to tear the cover off the baseball, going 3 for 4 last night with an RBI, a run scored and a .292 batting average.

Aaron Cook (10-6, 4.32) takes the mound this afternoon against Manny Parra (11-10, 6.16) for the Brewers.

** There’s a good article over at the Hardball Cooperative website by Thom Henninger on whether or not Jim Tracy’s success this season will carry over to the 2010 season. Story here. Is it a little early to be discussing next season already? Probably, but go check out the article, it’s a good read.

Play-off players:

American League

Detroit Tigers – New York Yankees

National League

- ¿Lactancia a demanda?

Saludos.

Maria.

For those of us who participate in Dynasty/Keeper leagues, now is the time we start to consider the question “who will we hold onto for next season?” Injuries, age, team, current season numbers, expert opinions, they all influence our decisions. Here are, in my humble opinion, the top 60 keepers for 2010 (based on 12 team leagues, with a max of 5 keepers).

*”Age” is the age the player will be on opening day 2010. Current #’s are prior to games played on 9/23.

If the last two weeks weren’t enough of a roller coaster ride, then you’d be well advised to get ready for the next 4 weeks, because no amusement park in the country will have the ups and downs that this playoff race the Rockies are a part of will have.

The Rockies got back on track last night with an 8-3 win over the Mets. While the Giants lost last night in Philadelphia 1-0, giving the Rockies a 1 game lead again in the NL Wildcard race. The offense seems to be back on track, for a game at least. Gonzalez and Helton both homered, accouting for 5 of the team’s 8 runs. Seth Smith went 3 for 4, scoring 3 runs.

Jorge De La Rosa struck out 6 through six innings of work for his 13th win on the season. The bullpen only gave up a single run by Matt Daley in the 7th, while Betancourt and Street were flawless in the 8th and 9th innings.

The Rockies Ubaldo Jimenez (12-10, 3.33), like De La Rosa last night will go for his 13th win tonight. Jimenez will face Tim Redding (2-4, 5.94)

I say this with a staunch and unblemished record of heterosexuality — I have a man-crush on th

I say this with a staunch and unblemished record of heterosexuality — I have a man-crush on the Colorado Rockies. That’s right, not just one player, but the entire team.

I usually reserve my man-crushes for individual players like Michael Young, Chase Utley, or back in the day George Brett. However, the Rockies are a different case. I love the way this team plays.

Tulo is a home grown Rockie

They play great defense, they can beat you with a big fly or small ball, they have a very high baseball IQ, and this team can pitch. They are a very fun team to watch on a night in and night out basis.

However, above everything I just mentioned, there is one thing that stands out to me when I watch this team. It’s the fact that the Rockies are winning with home grown talent.

Everywhere you look on the field, the Rockies have players that they drafted and groomed in their farm system. Look at the core of this team…

Chris Iannetta – Drafted in the 4th round of the 2004 draft

Todd Helton- Drafted in the 1st round of the 1995 draft

Clint Barmes – Drafted in the 10th round of the 2000 draft

Troy Tulowitzki- Drafted in the 1st round of the 2005 draft

Ian Stewart – Drafted in the 1st round of the 2003 draft

Seth Smith – Drafted in the 2nd round of the 2004 draft

Dexter Fowler – Drafted in the 14th round of the 2004 draft

Brad Hawpe – Drafted in the 11th round of the 2000 draft

Garrett Atkins – Drafted in the 5th round of the 2000 draft

Ryan Spilborghs – Drafted in the 7th round of the 2002 draft

Ubaldo Jimenez – Signed as an amateur free agent in 2001

Aaron Cook – Drafted in the 2nd round of the 1997 draft

Other key contributors such as Carlos Gonzalez, Huston Street, Jason Marquis, and Jason Hammel have been acquired via trades. Only Matt Herges, Josh Fogg, and Juan Rincon were signed to free agent contracts and their contacts were all minor league deals.

To break down the Rockies current 25-man roster, 52 percent are home grown talent (drafted, signed as an undrafted free agent, or signed as an amateur free agent and developed in the Rockies system), 36 percent came from trades, and just 12 percent came from minor league free agent contracts.

That 52 percent would be higher (64 percent) if Dexter Fowler and Aaron Cook weren’t currently on the DL. To have over 50 percent of your talent come from drafts and amateur free agent signings is amazing.

It just goes to show what a tremendous job Dan O’Dowd has done recently in reshifting his strategy of handing out large free agent contracts to reinvesting that money back into their minor league system, scouting, and the draft.

Back in the day, the Rockies tried to play with the big boys in the free agent signing game. Mike Hampton, the late Darryl Kile, Denny Neagle, Larry Walker, Darryl Hamilton and the legendary Tom Goodwin all signed free agent contracts to come to Colorado.

Those days are long gone. The Rockies have found their winning formula and the ingredients have come from within.

John Smoltz’s career has life after beating San Diego Sunday. Smoltz threw five shutout innin

John Smoltz’s career has life after beating San Diego Sunday. Smoltz threw five shutout innings and fanned nine batters. Maybe the AL is tougher than the NL – but it certainly helps to face a punchless San Diego team, too. [MLB/SI]

For the second time in history (according to STATS, Inc, that’s who), Eric Bruntlett ended a game by himself – recording an unassisted triple play to help Brad Lidge avoid another blown save and give Pedro Martinez a win over his former team, the Mets. The score stood 9 – 7 after a run scoring single by Daniel Murphy. Murphy and Luis Castillo, who was on second, attempted a double steal when Jeff Francouer launched a Lidge pitch back up the middle where Bruntlett was moving… Bruntlett caught the liner, stepped on second, and tagged Murphy. [MLB/SI]

Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez will be more careful next time – he stabbed himself in the left hand with a falling steak knife, requiring a single stitch but keeping him out of the lineup for the next couple of days. [SI]

Meanwhile, the Rockies have come to terms with free agent Jason Giambi, most recently released by the Oakland As. He’d be a nice bench option, that’s for certain. [ESPN]

Moving to the Rockies rotation, the pitching staff took a big hit when Aaron Cook hit the DL with a sore shoulder. Cook had to leave Friday’s start with a strain and an MRI is scheduled for Monday. If the Rockies have to use Adam Eaton down the stretch, pencil in San Francisco or the Dodgers as the Wild Card team in the NL. Josh Fogg is the other option (not appreciably better), and Matt Herges got the call from AAA Colorado Springs to join the roster. [FoxSports]

Reds starter Aaron Harang’s season came to an end thanks to emergency appendectomy surgery. He’ll see restricted activity for about three weeks before he can do anything physical in nature. According to SI, Harang is the ninth player to head to the DL for Cincinnati, and the seventh to require surgery – which is an amazing number, really. Fortunately, Scott Rolen came off the DL – but he can’t pitch. [SI]

Boston may have claimed Billy Wagner off the waiver wire (the Mets haven’t decided whether to allow the claim, work a deal, or pull him back), but apparently the bullpen wouldn’t have done it. Both Jonathon Papelbon and Manny Delcarmen weren’t excited about it when asked by WEEI radio earlier this weekend. [ESPN]

FoxSports reported that David Eckstein will remain in San Diego next year and signed a contract extension for 2010… He’s not really a championship level producer anymore, but he’s an extra coach for a young team and Eckstein does have a history of being on winning teams. [FoxSports]

Here’s a position that won’t get much of an argument… FoxSports Jon Paul Morosi makes his case that Ichiro Suzuki will one day enter the Hall of Fame. His take on it is mostly “Well, he has more hits than anybody, and Ken Griffey says he’s a Hall of Famer…” Let’s look at it more subjectively. Assuming he finishes the season and gets 16 more hits in the last 40 games or so – meaning he won’t get injured or suddenly freeze at the plate – Ichiro will have nine straight seasons of 200 hits, more than 2000 in his career, and his fourth season batting at least .350. Dusting off a 1986 Bill James Baseball Abstract, his Hall of Fame calculator shows that Ichiro has collected nearly 200 points of accomplishments that Hall of Fame voters tend to consider when voting for someone – which makes him, well, overqualified (the gray area is from 70 – 130; beyond that is pretty much guaranteed in, unless you are Pete Rose or Barry Bonds). Then, you add that he was the first Japanese position player and remains one of the most skilled outfielders and hitters – he certainly qualifies as both famous and great. Ichiro may wind up with more professional hits than Pete Rose when it’s all over – he could have 4500 hits if you count his days in Japan.

Hurry Back! Alfonso Soriano continues to miss games with a sore knee. Gee – I thought it was his poor batting. (Sorry – Angry Cub Fan in me typing that one…) Marlins reliever Brendan Donnelly hits the DL with a calf strain. I watched the play – I’m not sure what he did, but if he can’t field a grounder without getting hurt, he needs to step aside. Phillies infielder Greg Dobbs also has a strained calf. Cardinal starter Kyle Lohse just came off the DL – he heads back with a strained groin (hopefully his own).

Welcome Back! Miguel Cairo was called up by the Phillies to take Dobbs’ spot. Did you see that Armando Benitez was signed by Houston? He heads to Round Rock to see if he can still pitch. Jason Grilli returned to Texas from the DL. Seattle is giving one more shot to former Marlin Randy Messenger. I can answer this for you – this Messenger has already been shot.

Pennant Chances: Now that the season has entered its final quarter, let’s pronounce some races over…

Nobody is catching the Phillies or Cards. The Yankees would have a significant collapse if they were to lose now, as would the Angels. Even though it’s closer than before, I have faith in the Dodgers – but give Colorado a 15% chance to win, and San Francisco 10%. The NL Wild Card is too close to call, but it’s going to be one of the teams from the West. If someone were to surprise, it’s going to be Atlanta because they suddenly have a healthy pitching staff – but it’s getting late to put up a fight. I’d give them a 15% chance of pulling it off. The closest race is Detroit and Chicago in the AL Central, and I am relatively confident it will be Detroit by a nose because Chicago plays too sloppily to win. Minnesota doesn’t have a fight in them this season thanks to a failing rotation. The AL Wild Card will be the best race because Texas is good enough to win and Boston is just crazy enough to blow it right now. I know – I picked Boston to win it all, but the last three weeks have been disastrous and I don’t see how they will get out of it. I give Tampa a 15% chance of surprising somebody.
