Environment … boy what a catch phrase that doesn’t mean anything anymore, eh? “Save the environment?” What does that mean? I have a magnet that says “support our environment,” but what does that mean? When someone looks at the back of my vehicle, I am instantly stereotyped as a tree hugging sissy who doesn’t understand how the world works and who is overly conscientious. At least, every time I turn on the TV, that’s how I feel.

I was watching Mind of Mencia last night, and well, I have to admit, I find that he has a lot of truth to spray across the airwaves and/or cable-waves and a lot of humor to go with it. But he said it himself … right and wrong is only based on one’s perspective. That is true, right and wrong is very heavily based on perspective, but it seems to me, that perspective can and is often used irresponsibly or without good logic. Still, how could you prove that if it is based on perspective? But that is not even my point. Last night on his show, Carlos Mencia made his round of attacking people including: Whites, blacks, Asians, vegetatrians … there were others I am sure … but then he went on to attack what he called the people that really piss him off. Last night … it was Prius owners.

Apparently, Prius owners think they are better than everyone else because they are helping their environment and no one else is. Honestly I don’t even remember his exact words (Forgive me, it was early in the morning), but the basic gist was: Prius owners are tree hugging MF’s that need to STF up and stop looking down on everyone.  I could look for the transcript of the show, but … it’s not that important to me. My purpose is not to criticize Carlos Mencia, my purpose is to show that he difined what I already feel is a problem especially in the American South where I live blessed with beauty but plagued misinformation.

First of all, I don’t own a Prius. I would like to own one someday, but that day is not today. However, if I had the money, I would have a Prius. And I would buy it because in some little way it would help the environment (whatever that means anymore) and I would also buy it because it would help me save money on gas. I would not buy it,however, so I could drive around and make everyone think I was better than them because I drive a Prius, and I think I am helping the environment and no one else is. That would be the same as me joining the Peace Corps and proceeding to think I am better than other people who are not a part of the Peace Corps. Now I will admit, I am not perfect. I have a dislike for the way society functions a lot of times, but that is because I am naturally cynical. I still don’t think that means I think that I am better than anyone else either because most of the time, I gripe, because I am good at it and it makes me and my friends laugh.

Nevertheless, I find nature to be a terribly important commodity that i wish more people would learn to enjoy and appreciate. At the same time, I hope that they don’t learn to enjoy it, so that it stays more well preserved with less visitors to national parks and such. And yes, a selfish part of me doesn’t want them there when I go, but the honest side of me knows that I always have good experiences with people when I get out in nature. Maybe that has something to do with nature’s positive affect on people, and I’m not talking about tree hugging either. Getting back to the point, I don’t think I am better than other people because I believe in helping the environment, and i don’t think people who drive Priuses are any different. What scares me about this entire statement about Prius owners is this: not that Carlos Mencia decided to pick on Prius owners, but that after his statement there was a strong applause from the audience. It was one of those hearty applauses that implies that they agreed with what he was saying. To me, the scary part is, whether Carlos really meant it or not (and I hope that he did not and was merely trying to be funny), a lot of other people really do feel that way. They just don’t like environmentalists.

“Why is that” I ask? Is it because all envrionmentlists look down on everyone else and think they are better than everyone else? Is it because they think that all we want to do is stand around and tell them they can’t drive their SUV’s and farmers can’t use their giant gas guzzling trucks? It saddens me to see this. I don’t want to do that. I am not here to tell everyone else I am better than them. If anything, nature helps you realize how much you need to depend on each other and work together. All the same, I do believe we are falling behind in an issue that is very serious. For too long, we have lived away from the land and off of it, but not in and among it. I do not think we should drop everything and go back to the woods, but I do think we need to recognize the dangers of excvessive living both from an environmental perspective, and from a spiritual or psychological perspective.

Is it your right and perspective to say, “Environmentalists want to take everything away from us.”? Absolutely it is your right, does that make it true? No. Does it help to solve problems? Well I guess that depends on what your perspective is. But I can tell you that ignoring dangers because you refuse to understand them can be detrimental. Besides, what is so terrible about nature? Nature is the Earth. Earth is Nature. Man is only a part of that. Man, alone, is not the Earth, and Man, alone, certainly is not Nature. You can’t take up a lead pencil and expect it to write in blue ink. It just won’t happen. You can’t ignore the warning signs of the earth and act surprised when the shit hits the fan. You can’t build up a concrete and air conditioned society and ignore the fact that nature was here first and is what were are. You can’t eat rocks and you’ll be breathing air conditioned carbon if you don’t start hugging a few trees here and there.

So again, it saddens me to see all these people mocking Prius owners as if they are some inferior breed, when in fact they are embracing our future while everyone else is desperately clinging to the past. It saddens me that I have to sit in a job and listen to people rattle on about how Global Warming is a hoax and blah, blah blah … come on people … even if Global Warming was a hoax … there is no denying that pollution exists and it is only getting worse. Who cares what the immediate affects are or are not? The environment, that is the air we breathe and the food we eat, and the animals that help keep the food chain going and the trees that give us oxygen as they open their arms to hug us because ,come on, we give them the carbon they need; the environment still needs to be preserved and protected from human overconsumption and irresponsibility.

So, it saddens me to see the earth fading into oblivion right under the eyes of those who refuse to believe the truth. You know, people refused to believe Hitler was capable of genocide until it was much, too late.

One of the first things that inspired me to start this site over a year ago was Carlos Mencia. Back when I wrote this ode to Mencia’s hate-filled, hackneyed comedy, I got some responses from folks who said not many people watched it (despite having data to prove otherwise).

Well Mencia’s show has been canceled, but fear not lovers of unbelievably lame racist jokes that serve no purpose whatsoever, because Comedy Central just premiered Jeff Dunham’s new show! And not only that, it’s the channel’s highest rated premiere. Ever.

For the lucky uninitiated, Dunham is a ventriloquist who uses his puppets as vehicles to be racist, etc. Here’s a clip of one of his signature characters, Achmed the Dead Terrorist.

Really, I’m trying my hardest to keep my brain inside of my head, you know, since it exploded.

Even other comics who have shows on Comedy Central are lamenting over his high ratings, such as Daniel Tosh on his Twitter feed.

I can go on and on about how horrible the comedy is itself, and honestly, if you don’t already see how racist it is, then I suggest you move on from hateonme.com.

But he can’t be racist, his best friend is black!

The thing is, there are many terrible comics with similar jokes. Some are able to push it further than others. Like Mencia, for instance. People felt comfortable laughing at him calling Mexicans “wetbacks” because he’s Latino with a Spanish name. He even changed his name from “Ned” to “Carlos” in an effort to “Mexican it up” (his words, not mine) and use his ethnicity as a free pass, to say things whites and others couldn’t. With Dunham, he does the same thing as Mencia, and uses a puppet as the medium to put forth material that normally would get him booed off the stage. So people don’t realize it’s still him talking?

Apparently the art of ventriloquism continues to boggle the minds of grown adults.

What I really want to point out is how many people actually like this crap (5.3 million viewers during the first episode) and what this says about America. If I can’t even trust the masses to pick a good comedy show, how the hell am I supposed to trust them when it comes to picking what’s best for my health care?

Comedy Central should have a constitutional monarchy.

To be fair, Dunham recognizes that his show “has no socially redeeming value whatsoever.” And then he goes on to say:

“You’re not going to learn anything. All you’re going to do is have a big goofy time and escape your problems for a while.”

You know, as long as you’re white.

I know it is very “unliberal” of me, but I’m sick unto death with political correctness.  If we do not find our sense of humor in this nation soon, we will descend into an even deeper pit of acrimony.

I am aware from my own miserable experiences as a child who was called a queer—when I didn’t even know what that was—that it is not fun to be taunted on the school playground.  But I also remember what we were told time and time again by the adults of our world:  Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.  I know from those experiences that words did, indeed, hurt me, but that was as a child.  Now, I’m all grown up and have grown some thicker skin.  The real truth of the matter is that name calling is a reflection, not on the person being taunted, but on the idiot who is delivering the taunt.  It tells us that the person is a hateful bigot, but it doesn’t really tell us if what they are shouting is true or not.

My point today is that we really, really need to get over it.  There is something different about every one of us, and folks are bound to notice.  I’m not only gay; I’m also old, skinny, long-haired, and a liberal Democrat.  I have a face that is too small for my nose, my neck is long and I hang around the house and yard dressed like a slob.  A couple of weeks ago, after our telephone and internet service had been down for four days due to some wiring problem, my mother-in-law dispatched the law out to find out if we were okay.  When the deputy from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office knocked on the door, I was in all my finery: rumpled tee-shirt, old-style gym shorts, flip-flops, unshaven and without my biker’s ponytail—leaving my hair in its natural frizzed-out wizard-look glory.  He looked me up and down with great disdain.

I’m sure he thought I was some sort of dope-smoking hippy or crack-cooking miscreant.  His lingering stare from my hair to my feet was most uncomfortable, and led me to a small bout of anger directed at my mother-in-law for sending him here in the first place.  But later in the day I had to laugh at the scene as I played it over in my head.  “I’ll bet that never happened to June Cleaver,” I thought.  Of course not, she was the vision of perfection 24 hours a day, starched, coifed and bejeweled.  Like it or not, the days of old June are gone forever, and we need to realize that.  We also need to realize that we are all in line for some criticism, deserved or not, from our fellow men.  Like it or not, we’re all different.  Thank God for that.

But today, in a media-driven society where obsession is the flavor of every day, every disparaging word uttered by anyone considered newsworthy is grounds for a two- to four-day run of criticism and “expert” analysis.  Everyone is outraged!  Everyone is sanctimonious in their criticism of the culprit and acrimoniously demanding apologies and contrition.  Come on, now.  Who among us can truly step forward and cast that stone.  Be honest, now.  Don’t you at least notice the “difference” of that person that cuts you off in traffic, or grabs the last seat on the bus or train by hurrying in front of you?  If you can say that neither of these things apply to you, please go straight to the Vatican and pick up your sainthood.

The Goode Family...and dog

During the summer months there was an animated comedy show on ABC called The Goode Family.  I loved it; Mrs. Jack, on the other hand, squirmed in her chair and chafed at the humor it poked at liberalism.  If you missed it, I hope you can somehow find a way to see it, because to me it really captured a glimpse into the world we have come to.  The family, the Goodes, were dedicated to living the standards of environmental, organic, vegetarian and all-around thoughtfulness that we on the Left hold dear.

But the difficulties they encountered were as hilarious as they were real.  There was the boss’s wife, who was one of those pseudo-liberals we all know who shop at Whole Foods Market and continuously talk, talk, talk about their dedication to the greenness of the environment, but do absolutely nothing to help except buy expensive groceries as a status symbol.

But there was another character in this little tome that made me laugh until my sides were splitting: the family dog.  Mrs. Goode was determined to keep her dog, a big mutt, politically correct by feeding it only vegetarian dog food.  The poor thing was reduced to chasing down the neighborhood squirrels and other unsuspecting prey to fulfill its protein cravings.  But all in all it showed the difficulty encountered by everyday people trying to live up to the lofty standards being set for us.  But it was funny, and we on the Left need to be able to have a sense of humor about ourselves.

Carlos Mencia (PicApp)

One of my favorite stand-up comedians is Carlos Mencia.  He is the most politically incorrect performer I have ever seen in my life.  But he pokes fun at everyone equally.  Nobody is excluded from his sharp wit—gays, blacks, arabs, mentally challenged and, yes, even his own ethnic group, which he refers to as “beaners.”  In every show, Carlos, points out in the most hilarious way how funny everybody in America is to everybody else, and to themselves.  His audience is always a cross-section of the American melting pot, and everybody is laughing, even the butts of his jokes.

He tells a story about a mentally challenged fan one day coming up to him after his show and asking, “Why do you leave us out?  Don’t you like us?”  As Mencia tells the story, the young man went on to say, “We do funny things, too, and we laugh at ourselves like everybody else.  If you don’t make fun of us like everybody else, you’re being prejudiced against us.”  What a thought!

Isn’t it just as dishonest to hide what you think about others in front of them as it is to say what’s on your mind?  When we do this, that difference simmers underneath, disallowed its rightful expression, until it can boil over into a torrent of hate and resentment that can lead to violence.  Then words have literally been replaced by sticks and stones.

So the walls of the two social fortresses in America grow higher and thicker by the day and even run through the family gatherings we are all about to “enjoy” in the next few months.  Each family has its own.  Maybe there are openly gay members of a family, or mixed-racial marriages and children.  My family has both, and the tightrope is tight indeed.

I’m not advocating hateful verbal behavior against one another, but I think we have reached a point where our ability to be civil with those who disagree with us is being hampered by our guilt around political incorrectness.  And those who would stir the pot of hatefulness in our nation, like Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and Bill O’Reilly, are making a load of money by fanning those smoldering embers.  And, of course, they are trying to turn the whole thing around to where any criticism of conservatives is being labeled as bigoted, racial prejudice.

It doesn’t have to be this way.  We can all grow up and start acting like grownups.  If you want to call me a “faggot” or “queer” or whatever, just shout it.  I’m a big man now and can take it.  I would much rather you do that than to have you express your frustration by taking out your rifle and shooting into the front of a gay bar as you pass by, killing or hurting me or one of my friends who are just trying to have a nice evening out.  And if you choose to shout “faggot” or “queer” out your car window as you drive by on the street, I will smile to myself and realize that you have the problem, not me.  I will also choose to realize that your labeling me as something that I am, maybe not in those words, is nothing for me to feel shame about.  I am gay.  So what, “breeder”!  Oh, yes, we have names for you, too.  Doesn’t that make you want to run home and tell your mommy on me?  Probably not so much.  Me, neither.

Now there is one place I will say this kind of behavior should be discouraged: the schoolyard.  But good luck with that.  We all know the notoriously mean nature of kids.  Like it or not, they are just little copies of us.  They repeat and act out everything they see and hear adults do, so we have nobody but ourselves to blame for their behavior.  So I would hate to see this issue become one of those “no tolerance policy” things for children.  It only serves to send them back home to their parents who will teach them more of the same because now they are really mad at whatever group is “offended.”  Instead, these incidents would best be used as teaching moments by our educators.  And if parents don’t like teachers telling their children to be nice to each other, they can always establish a “private hate academy” to teach their “values.”  But I’m against vouchers for those schools.

“]But since the likelihood of kids stopping the time-honored tradition of taunting their classmates about every little thing that makes them different is remote, it is probably best to return to the old teaching on the issue: sticks and stones.  And as for the rest of us—you know, the “grown-ups”—it’s  time for us to start acting like grown-ups and be thoughtful about what we say about others, realize who the person with the problem is, and to “grow some skin.”  If you don’t ever think you are funny, find a therapist.  Everybody is funny!  Gay people are funny, and beauty queens are funny.  Even I am funny.

This may be a case of the pot calling the kettle black, but I truly don’t understand why people feel the need to be hateful of everything. It seems that we, as a culture, take great pleasure in other’s pain. Schadenfreude, I believe, is the German word for this exact phenomenon. I will admit to falling prey to this myself, right here in the pages of this blog(How you doing, Jay Leno?). However, I like to think that my attempts at wittiness never veer into the mean and petty spheres.

The same can not be said for many of the celebrity gossip bloggers out there. Whether it be What Would Tyler Durden Do or Ted Casablanca’s The Awful Truth, these bloggers make their living out of being mean and witty. While they often do make me chuckle, they cross the line into the personal attack more often than I am comfortable with. However, they have nothing on Perez Hilton.

Perez Hilton is the epitome of everything that is wrong with America’s obsession with celebrity culture. This failed actor channels his jealousy of everybody who was ever able to accomplish anything in their life into his vitriolic tirades about what the big stars are doing, and who they are doing it to. The fact that Hilton’s blog, which is never funny but always caustic, is hugely popular with the less intelligent of the celeb-obsessed among us is a clear sign of the decline of simple decency in our society as a whole. Hilton appeals to the lowest common denominator of human being, the person who cannot abide another being successful.

It is this gutter trolling style of Hilton’s that has resulted in him being sued numerous times. He has been sued for copyright infringement(for illegally posting recordings of Britney Spears), defamation of character, and numerous other reasons. He has seen his site dropped by the web host due to fear of being sued for the shit he puts on it. Hilton is to the internet what Tucker Max is to literature, what Howard Stern is to the radio, and what Carlos Mencia is to comedy; a piece of shit that appeals to the frat boys and their equally vapid amigos.

One of the most appalling aspects of Hilton’s blog is that he has taken it upon himself to “out” celebrities who he claims are closeted homosexuals. Hilton was the driving force behind Lance Bass coming out of the closet. While he claims that what he is doing, by “outing” celebrities, is a positive thing for the gay community and gay rights, it is not his place to make this statement. The process of “coming out of the closet” is a deeply personal choice that should not be forced upon anyone, no matter their public profile, by a bottom feeding asshole looking to make himself slightly more famous than he already is. Besides, he loses much of his credibility of “helping the gay community” when you consider that the reason he has the shiner in the picture is because he used a anti-gay slur in an argument with will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas.

Perez Hilton is a disgusting human being. He has joked about celebrities deaths within minutes of them being announced.  He has attempted to “out” celebrities who he has no right to make that decision for them. But most of all, Perez Hilton is a disgusting human being because he cannot, for one moment, allow himself to take pleasure in the success of another human being. He lives his life filled with hatred and anger towards anybody who has ever accomplished anything in the fields that he would so love to be successful in. He is, in fact, famous for being a piece of shit.

Yet, millions of people a day read his blog.

Forget healthcare, abortion, and American Idol, the biggest debate causing the greatest amount of polarization in this country at this moment, may be the Dane Cook quandary.  Now before we go any further, I must confess, with great shame mind you, that I used to be a Dane Cook fan.  I admit, I used to get a good chuckle out of his Comedy Central Presents stand up specials.  But this was back when Dane was a bright-eyed young comic, humbled and ready to take the comedy world by storm.  The problem is, he did take the comedy world by storm and then proceeded to become a self-righteous, mediocre, pile of douche.  See what made Dane Cook initially funny was that, like any good stand up comic, he found the humor in everyday situations.  Sure, he would scream loudly and flail his arms around, but it was a novelty, kitschy if you will, and tolerable.  However, as time has marched on, his jokes have gotten less funny, and his antics out of control to the point that he looks like a meth head having an epileptic fit on stage.

Dane Cook is a sell out, and I have no problem with that.  People like to hate on someone simply because they manage to attain some level of fame and notoriety.  I have no problem with that either.  I encourage all artists to sell out at the first chance they get because honestly, the point of working in entertainment is to get paid doing what you love, and hopefully get paid handsomely for it.  The problem I have with Dane Cook, and he’s not the only one guilty of this, is that along with selling out, he became an arrogant fuckhead.

Dear Dane,

I am writing to say goodbye.  We had some good times.  You came into my life in college when I was impressionable and didn’t know what good stand up comedy was.  You made me laugh, granted I was probably under the influence at the time, but I laughed nonetheless.  Since those days I’ve wised up, and have come to realize that the only people who still find you funny are simpletons who can’t be bothered to think too hard.  And please don’t get me started on Employee of the Month or Good Luck Chuck.  I’m writing to say goodbye, not because I am giving up on you as a person, I did that years ago.  I writing to say goodbye, because you’ve worn out your welcome Dane.  Now, your time has come…to be thinned from the herd.

In a world where DANE COOK has been impaled on his own SuFi:

• Frat boys across the country will have to stick to only finding dick and fart jokes funny anymore.
• Louis C.K. could rest easy not having to fear anymore of his jokes being stolen by Dane.  Sorry Louis, but Carlos Fucking Mencia is still lurking around, so don’t rest too easy.
• Richard Pryor would turn back over in his grave once people stop comparing his popularity to Dane Cook’s.
• People will realize that in order for a joke to be funny, it needs to have a punchline.
• Larry the Cable Guy will become the world’s most popular comedian (I’m coming for you next Larry!  Git-R-Done?  Git-R-Go Fuck Yourself!)
• Film studios will be forced to cast someone who is actually charming and funny to play the leading man in their crappy romantic comedies.  Really?  Dane Cook was the best you could do?!
• The lives of the Dane Cook super-fans will be lonely and empty, until they rediscover Jim Carrey, to fill their over-the-top, physical comedy compensating for a lack of actual humor void.
• The SuFi will no longer draw attention away from the far superior Shocker.
• Dave Chappelle will make his triumphant return from being crazy claiming Dane Cook as the REAL reason he went crazy.
• The NY Friars Club will roast Dane Cook, literally, his corpse, rotating on a spit over an open flame.  Sweet revenge for all the comics who couldn’t stand him.

My, my, my, how harsh the public can be…they can love you one minute and despise you the next.  Dane, I wish I could keep your early work around when you actually were amusing, but that’s not how this game works.  As for the crimes against [comedic] humanity that you have committed over the last few years, the comedy world would be a much funnier place without your smug mug fucking it all up.  As much as we might dislike this guy, he still has legions of fans that fill arenas to watch him act like a retarded five year old, and as long as they’re there for Dane, Dane will be here to torture all of us.

But one has to have dreams right?

There are innumerable comedians who talk about sex. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find one that doesn’t. Carlos Mencia likes to talk about sex. He likes to talk about dicks and pussy and g-spots and orgasms and, shockingly, the differences between men and women. Who knew sex could be so dull?  Mencia talks like he’s a radical, using the uglier words we’d rather not use in general conversation: cunt, for example. He talks like he’s pushing boundaries by blaming women for not having orgasms. It’s hilarious because women are different to men. He talks like he just invented gender-based comedy and, bizarrely, the audience laps it up. I think the real shock value for those watching comes from Mencia’s unabashed sexuality combined with a complete lack of sex appeal. Looking at him objectively he’s pretty fucking ugly. For a start he’s got a small face, he’s overweight, he’s got an unpleasant accent, he dresses like a teenager who’s just discovered baseball.

So here’s him being controversial on another taboo: race! How exciting! He’s going to say something offensive, I can just tell. It’s going to be AWESUM. Well, there you go, not only does he say “nigger” but he says “sand-nigger” too. Brilliant – I knew he’d have something up his sleeve. Blacks, it appears, are fine; Middle Easterners, not so much. This isn’t funny. It’s not offensive either. Who’s surprised that the great mind of Mencia is racist? I’m really only offended that he doesn’t make more out of it. If you’re going to cross the race taboo and be openly xenophobic towards Middle Easterners then at least go hardcore. Really tear it up. “Sand-nigger”, please – that’s so pre-9/11. I wanna hear something that makes me want to throw rocks. I want something that makes me want to censure the bastard because he’s offending my liberal sensibility. I want him, in a word, to be ironic. Racism can be funny when delivered in a context that undoes stereotypes and challenges pre-conceptions. In that sense it loses the racism with which it would ordinarily be imbued. Mencia doesn’t have the capacity for this kind of comedy. He’s all knob jokes and bigotry, plucked out of 80s UK stand up. In fact, he looks a bit like Manning doesn’t he?

But then he’s attuned to the military industrial complex and he gets capitalism. But are these jokes about the pervasive idolatry of American industry or are they just jokes about foreigners? Because there’s no analysis here, and if you don’t believe me, see Robert Newman’s “A History of Oil”.  So what are people laughing at? Are they amused by the hypocritical lack of self-flagellation that should accompany the admission of one’s culpability in the murder of soldiers and civilians in a country we’ve occupied? Probably not. It’s probably the ‘funny’ voice he does: he sounds Arab!

I could go on but it’d really be much of the same, more examples of Mencia ‘pushing a boundary’ by being offensive (perhaps he’d call it ‘telling the truth’, or ‘saying what you’re too frightened to say’) and then showing how he is really just clothing racist jokes in contemporary clothes. LOS ANGELES, CA August 4, 2009 – The 2009 Feel Good Film Festival (FGFF) announces that Carlos Mencia will serve as the host for the Opening Night Gala festivities at the Egyptian Theatre on Friday, August 7 prior to the presentation of Chris Dowling’s ROCK SLYDE.

The star of Comedy Central’s “Mind of Mencia” will entertain and start the proceedings by introducing the film and filmmakers at the Gala event.

The Feel Good Film Festival also announces the nominees for the new award categories to be presented at the film festival’s award ceremony on Sunday, August 9. The nominees for those award categories are as follows:

FGFF also announces details for the Feel Good Filmmaker panel on Saturday, August 8 at 10:30AM in the Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian. The subject of the panel is “Exploring the Limits of Feeling Good at the Movies,” with topics including the issues of current boundaries of language and racy content in comedies, as well as the responsibility of “truth in advertising” for films marketed to age groups the films are arguably inappropriate for.

Panelists will include actor, comedian, and Emmy Award winning comedy writer Rick Overton, Andy Dick (ROCK SLYDE), Frank Conniff (Mystery Science Theater 3000), Jacob Medjuck (director, SUMMERHOOD), and David Sleven, (Manager, Comedy Development, FOX Broadcasting). The panel will be moderated by John Wildman (Director of Press & Public Relations, FGFF and Head of PR, American Film Institute). Admission for the general public, space permitting, is $10.00.

Musical performers on the Audiorents Feel Good stage in the Egyptian Theatre Courtyard will range from rock to pop to bluegrass featuring several performers with songs nominated for Best Feel Good Song honors at the festival this year.

Performers include: Blonde Jersey, Poorgood, Land of Deborah, The Mysterious Ticking Sound, MeryKid, Sons of Jack, Kingsley, Doron Diamond, Ballroom Madness, Babylon Saints, Skyebat, Lee Whittaker, Jason Manns, ModelK, Freddy & Francine, and Sarah Sharp. Also performing will be the Goddess A Go‐Go dance troupe and Improv performers, Woodshop Improv.

Attending an episode of Mind of Mencia has to be one of the oddest experiences I have ever encoutnered.

We arrived at our seats in the front row (I do not trust the back row anymore)* about a half an hour before the show started, as Mary Todd heard there would be pre-show banter that she did not want to miss. This ended up being partially true as Carlos Mencia did get up on stage to talk to the crowd, but I would hardly call what he did banter. Instead of some actual jokes to get the night started on the right foot, he went down the line of members of the front row and insulted each and every one of us.

On second thought, perhaps the word “insulted” would be too much of a compliment and an inaccuracy for what he actually did.

The first member of the line was an Asian man. Carlos Mencia, being the witty and clever person that he is, decided to craft his “insult” around the fact that the Asian man probably had a weird name.

Carlos-”So what’s your name, Zing Zong Zoop, right?”

Asian Man-”It’s David.”

Carlos-”Well I bet your birth name you got from your slanted eye mother is something more along the lines of what I said, right?”

Asian Man-”No. My birth name is David and both my mother and myself were born in America. However, my dad is Asian, so it looks like you got me.”

Carlos (to the crowd)-”Get a load of this guy! Dee Dee Dee!”

Nobody laughed.

The next three people were also Asian and almost identical conversations ensued between Carlos and those three, with Mencia relying on the same “jokes” that their names should be funny and that their mothers have slanted eyes all three times.

My humble self was next in line.

Carlos-”Look! You have a hole in your head! Does that mean you’re DEE DEE DEE!”

Myself-”Alright, thank you.”

Carlos-”You must be a little bit dee dee dee to wear that ridiculous suit.”

Myself-”What’s wrong with my suit?”

Carlos (to the crowd)-”It’s DEE DEE DEE!”

Fair enough. We did pay to come see the show so I suppose we are at least partly at fault for creating this monster. And besides, how can you be too upset over “insults” that rely heavily on stereotypes and seldom make sense. Well I found my answer when Carlos moved on to Mary Todd.

Carlos-”You look very lovely tonight.”

Mary Todd (bashfully)-”Why thank you.”

Carlos (whispering)-”I want to just take you out back to my Corvette and hump you until the end of time.”

Myself-”What was that?”

Mary Todd (even more bashfully)-”You’re too kind, young gentleman.”

Carlos-”You know what though, I’ve got something to tell you. I don’t actually want to hump you, BECAUSE YOU’RE DEE DEE DEE!”

Carlos than ran down the rest of the line of front row viewers with his arm outstretched in order to get high-fives but no one extended out their hands.

Carlos-”Ah, whatever. We’ll just photoshop you’re excitement in later.”

Mary Todd was in tears.

Carlos-”Yo, security. Take that woman and her headless husband out of here, I can’t have her bawling all over the place while I do my set.”

Security guard-”Well you did just cause that and they did pay good money for those seats.”

Carlos-”Ah whatever, holmes. She’s just a dee dee dee. I’ll do it myself.”

And so, with Mary Todd Lincoln crying hysterically, Carlos Mencia escorted us out of his show. Perhaps, this was the kindest thing he has ever done.

*You may think this is because I was assasinated in the back of the head the last time I sat in the backrow. This is actually not the case as I put that incident behind me a long time ago.

Another funny episode of Tosh.0 aired last night, and I’m compelled to write about it because this is the kind of hilarious original content that Comedy Central should be making more of. “Is it Racist?“, Asians doing Christopher Walken impressions, Chris Crocker (the ‘Leave Britney Alone!’ kid), and forcing the audience to watch Two Girls One Cup all in the same episode? Great television. And as I mentioned back in May, it saves me from wasting my own time trying to sift through the garbage on YouTube to find the hidden gems. Keep up the good work Tosh & Crew. As for Comedy Central, renew the show! For fuck’s sake, how many seasons did you give Carlos Mencia?

UPDATE – In case you were wondering what the answer is, Mind of Mencia was on for four seasons and a total of 45 episodes.

Last night I saw the Hilary Duff p.s.a. asking teenagers to use a different phrase than “that is so gay.” I applaud the idea even though Hilary Duff hasn’t been a teenager in twelve years. I like that she had one of those plastic hair floofers in place so that she could look matriarchal. Sort of like Eva Gabor in Green Acres. Despite Duff, the series of p.s.a.’s has won some Ad Council awards and inspired  lots of angst. Way to go. At least it’s on the table. Now if only the r-word campaign could do the same thing. Yep, that nasty old term “retarded” just keeps on chugging and finding new ways to kill the spirit. Why is it  still okay to label everything in existence retarded? In part because the mentally and physically handicapped community and their advocates are only beginning to amass the resources  that the LGBT already has rallied. I’ve said it to the point of nausea, but we live in a society where it isn’t acceptable to call someone a sexual, racial or religious epithet (although the religion issue is becoming muddied), but you can say retarded to your heart’s content. The making of the monster has been swift. Carlos Mencia basically made it okay to “De-De-Dee” in someones face and not have to deal with social repercussions. Unlike race and gender issues, these are persons often not able to defend themselves to a large degree. An unseen minority constantly reminded of their own physical and mental limitations by a blithely unconcerned society. There it is. Get Hilary Duff, Wanda Sykes, Elvis Presley-I don’t care- to take this issue public and do the media tour, as well as the advertisements. The r-word ain’t going away unless we make it happen.

Carlos Mencia’s blown up in the last five years, due to calling people ‘beaners’ and blurting out unfunny racial jokes.  He started getting comedy specials, had a show on Comedy Central, and became a household name.  He even mainstreamed his stupid ‘dee dee dee’ catchphrase.
