By Calvin Palmer

Four men were found dead this afternoon at an apartment in the Upper West Side area of Manhattan.

Police say three of the men were shot to death inside Apartment 3-S on Amsterdam Avenue, between 83rd and 84th Streets.

The victims were identified as three generations from the same family — a 92-year-old grandfather, his 52-year-old son and 21-year-old grandson, all named Carlos Rodriguez.

The two younger men were discovered dead in a bedroom, and the older man was found lying in the bathroom.

The fourth man, Hector Quinones, was found dead in the backyard and is believed to have fallen while trying to leave the apartment through a back window.

“He may be responsible for the deaths of other three,” said Paul J. Browne, New York Police Department’s chief spokesman.

A semi-automatic pistol was discovered at the scene.

A 49-year-old woman was also injured in the incident and has been taken to St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital where her condition is stable.

Police were alerted around 1:45 and the area was soon swarming with uniformed and plainclothes officers.

Detectives believe the motive for the shootings was drug related. A small amount of cocaine was found inside the apartment as well as on Quinones’ body.

Based in Brooklyn, New York, Carlos Rodríguez uses photography, sculpture and drawing to appropriate

Based in Brooklyn, New York, Carlos Rodríguez uses photography, sculpture and drawing to appropriate idioms from modernism transforming them into contemporary works that often speak of the relationship between the self, the audience and the art object. Playing with the idea of reflection and likeness, the artist often uses mirrors to construct his works, such as Greeting Flower, Fertilizing My Ever Growing Garden of Fears and Kickable Mirror. In Negative Plane, however, what we see as the final drawing is the effacement of its surface, as the artist uses an eraser to draw on compressed charcoal on paper. While in Unfolding Greed, the artist arranges triangled shaped canvases to form an abstract composition. Through his work, Carlos discusses the use of “modernism as a system of legibility that holds things together like cities seen from a plane.” In the end what Carlos seeks is for “the art object to be placed in a position that holds together its relationship with the audience and the artist; a common ground where none is an outsider while holding the question of being and temporality.”

Carlos E. Rodríguez holds an M.F.A from Brooklyn College and pursued studies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has participated in several group exhibitions at Independent Space, Maiden Brooklyn and Duck House Gallery. He lives and works between Brooklyn, NY and Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico.

By Jeff Parker (Writer), Carlo Pagulayan, Gabriel Hardman, Chris Samnee, & Carlos Rodriguez (Pencils), Jason Paz, Hardman, Samnee, &Terry Pallot (Inks), and Wilfred Quintana & Veronica Gandini

Some Thoughts Before The Review: The first X-Men Vs. Agents of Atlas book was solid and entertaining. That said, it wasn’t anything special and a bit too much of an “X” title for my taste. Perhaps the second half of the mini-series will swing things more in the favor of the Agents of Atlas.

The Story: The X-Men and the Agents of Atlas fight for a while until they realize that there is a connection between them. Meanwhile, Venus finds herself at the mercy of a follower of Aphrodite.

What’s Good: The fight that opens X-Men Vs. Agents of Atlas #2 is easily the highlight of the entire book. It’s chaotic as hell and a whole lot of fun to see play out…especially when Mr. Lao the Agent’s dragon gets involved. The art team does an excellent job of packing a ton of characters on each page during the scene and Jeff Parker’s battle-banter shines. Also, importantly, both teams come out of the encounter looking pretty damned good. The Agents prove that they’ve got what it takes to hang with the big dogs, while the X-Men once again show why they are one of the best comic teams of all time.

While Jeff Parker’s script is entertaining and serviceable, the only real surprise about it is how he manages to tie the bonus story from last month into the main X-Men Vs. Agents of Atlas plot. It’s a nice twist to an otherwise predictable story. Thankfully, the book as a whole is elevated by the impressive artwork. The styles used fit the various segments and really make each piece of the story feel visually distinct.

What’s Not So Good: Outside of the interesting plot twist involving the bonus segment from X-Men Vs. Agents of Atlas #1, there’s little in X-Men Vs. Agents of Atlas #2 that you haven’t seen before. Jeff Parker uses standard “good guys vs. good guys” plot beats from start to finish. The teams fight, someone gets both sides to listen, and soon they realize they shouldn’t be fighting. It’s predictable and, to be honest, a bit boring. The great action and artwork covers up the dull plot to a certain extent, but it can’t mask it completely.

Conclusion: X-Men Vs. Agents of Atlas #2 is a visually impressive, entertaining conclusion to a fun mini-series. It doesn’t really do anything new, but chances are you probably won’t mind.

Grade: C+

by Andy Diggle (writer), Pop Mahn & Carlos Rodriguez (art), Frank Martin & Rain Beredo (colors), and Albert Deschesne (letters)

The Story: Black Widow and Songbird find themselves in a bad spot, as a divide begins to form between the Thunderbolts.

What’s Good: It’s really quite tragic that in Diggle’s final issue, the team finally feels fully established, with its members feeling legitimate and competent. Each character is fully defined, and I found myself caring about each and every one of them. The bad guys on the team felt like nasty, powerful adversaries, while I was firmly cheering for the good guys on the team. While Ghost has been awesome for some time, Headsman is now very lovable in his own right, Paladin gives off a twisted Scott Summers feel, Ant-Man is in intriguing character that’ll be trouble later on, and Mr. X is the evil, all-powerful badass that he should be.

All of this comes courtesy of the team breaking apart early on in the issue, which allows each character to shine in his own right. It fully manifests the sort of bizarre team dynamic that should define the Thunderbolts; Diggle spends much of the issue with half of the team acting like heroes, or at least anti-heroes, while the other half are flat-out villains. This is the sort of moral impasse that can make Thunderbolts such a fascinating comic, as while none of the characters are good guys, each represent a different sort of villainy.

Beyond that, the action has the fast, slick, and frenetic feel that you’d expect from Thunderbolts, with fancy explosions aplenty and a fun chase sequence. This is really dynamic, yet shadowy stuff with the great shading that has come to be a requirement in a Thunderbolts book.

What’s Not So Good: It’s hard not to feel a little frustrated as you realize that Diggle has left his book in a state where nothing has really changed. Through some rather convenient techno-wizardy, Ghost ensures that the team will have no memory of their infighting – meaning that the roster stays the same and the internal strife that made this issue so interesting is put back into the closet. Meanwhile, a “new” member introduced at issue’s end essentially undoes the biggest twist of Diggle’s entire run.

Diggle just feels overly concerned with making the series as accessible as possible for incoming writer Jeff Parker. It’s as though we’re back to issue 3 of Diggle’s run, with Parker merely inheriting Diggle’s original team, but almost none of the events that came after that roster selection.

The unmasking of Scourge was also underwhelming. It really is a C-list character, one I can imagine many people being totally unfamiliar with. Worse still, those who are familiar with the character probably saw this coming a mile away.

Also, perhaps due to having a larger art team, things can feel a bit scattered and a little too frantic, with a few too many angular panels, some faces looking off, and some panels being clearly done by a different hand.

Conclusion: A great issue that makes me feel that Diggle’s leaving too soon. It’s too bad that so much is undone.

After weeks of rumors Justine made it official yesterday, she is gonna start playing on the WTA tour again next season at least until the Olympics of 2012. When she quit in may 2008, she was ready to start a family and be busy with other things. She also missed the fire necessary for top tennis. After recharging her battery and realizing she is not ready for a family yet, she re-hired former coach Rodriguez to make a comeback. While I am not as big of a Justine fan as I am from Kim, I am super excited about the comeback. Justine is an extraordinary talented player with a great game that is a feast for the eyes, something the women’s tour desperately needs right now. Her personality is not as nice as Kim’s, but Justine is a fighter and showed some great improvement in behavior at the end of her career. Belgium is all of a sudden the biggest name in women’s tennis again, together with the U.S.

I guess I shouldn’t say it but I’ll still do it anyway: “I told you!“

Justine Henin is back, following Kim Clijsters in her footsteps. The former number one of the world, who by the way won seven grand slams, announced her comeback this evening on belgian television. “I’m really happy and deeply moved to be able to announce tonight that I’m coming back to competitive tennis” she said. Her former coach Her coach Carlos Rodriguez will assist her as her coach just like he did before Henin retired from tennis in 2008. Carlos Rodriguez said that one of Henin’s major goals will be to win Wimbledon, the only grand slam she did not yet win. Henin will start by playing exhibition tournaments in Belgium and Dubai. And next year she wants to shine on the Australian Open. Her plan is to play until 2012 to defend her gold medal during the Olympics. Belgian tennis has a bright future ahead!

And why she came back? She told that “her flame had burned out” and that during the last 15 months that flame started sparkling once more. So I am confident that she will put the whole circuit on fire for the next years to come!

By Gail Simone (writer), Nicola Scott with Carlos Rodriguez (pencillers), Doug Hazlewood with Rodney

By Gail Simone (writer), Nicola Scott with Carlos Rodriguez (pencillers), Doug Hazlewood with Rodney Ramos & Carlos Rodriguez (inkers)

The Story: Half the team (Bane, Scandal and Jeannette) are on the run on the lunatic island prison with Artemis, who is looking to save other Amazons. The other half of the team (Deadshot, Catman and Ragdoll) are watching Wonder Woman being prepped to be the supper for some gruesome monster. And, they’re being sent to track down and kill their rebellious colleagues. Simone even fits in a romantic look at Liana K. struggling with her feelings for Scandal.Random note: Being a Canadian sci-fi guy, I actually met Liana K. in real life.

What’s Good: The art was great. There are so many names on the art team this month that I couldn’t tell you who did what, but whatever twister game they used to decide who would draw what panel, the end product is great. I would even say that the art in this issue beats the solid art in the last. There are a few faces that look a little forced, but there are many others that are expressive, clear, and beautiful.

There’s a lot of tension and immediacy in the danger the Secret Six is in right now. But somehow, without breaking the pacing or relieving the tension, Simone showed us Scandal’s childhood, some vulnerability in Bane and Jeannette, more funny weirdness in Ragdoll, and some moral compass in Catman and Deadshot.

Simone is also a deft hand at handling issues that others would find difficult to balance. She managed to fit extraordinary rendition, a modern-day run-around of human rights, into the story without making it look preachy or clunky. She depicted a lesbian romance without being titillating or crass. And while almost all her characters kill at some point, she spent a moment in this issue humanizing the victims of the Secret Six. Well done, Ms. Simone!

What’s Not So Good: Having Wonder Woman unconscious in front of the monster who will eat her, but then deciding with no explanation to tie her up nearby was weak villainy and Simone could have done better. She’s a solid writer and plotter who didn’t need to fall back on this clichéd (and creaky) plot device. In the end, despite the danger, neither the monster, nor the Secret Six’ employer come off quite as scary as all that. The former is a bit too cartoony, and the latter is a sociopathic Mr. Rourke with a different kind of island.

Conclusion: Gail Simone continues to hit doubles, triples and home runs. If you like your heroes weird, anti-social, filled with a healthy dose of lethal vigilantism, you should be reading this book.

• Chiesa di Sta. Maria del Popolo, facade and nave sculptures, GL Bernini c1660; apse by G Bramante c1600-09; the Capella Chigi Chapel also by Bernini, other chapels by Carlo Fontana, Raphael, Sangallo il giovane, etc; The Cappella Cerasi has two canvases by Caravaggio, the Conversion of Paul and the Crucifixion of St Peter, from 1601-1602.

S. Ivo della Sapienza di Roma, F Borromini (chapel), Pirro Ligorio/Giacomo della Porta, 1642-50
• document: volume: plan + section; parti + geometry
Piazza Navona: S. Agnese, F Borromini, 1652-, and i Tre Fiumi, Giovani Lorenzo Bernini, c1650
• Urban legend has it that one of Bernini’s personifications in the Fountain holds his hand up as if protecting himself from the imminent collapse of the façade of S. Agnese. While the relationship between Borromini and Bernini was tense, the fountain was completed before the façade so the apparent gesture was not intentional. See Baroque III, below, to see the real tectonic tension between the two.
Santa Maria della Pace, Pietro da Cortona, 1656-57; chiostre (cloister), Bramante, 1500-1504.
•    document: facade: the dynamic folding; and cloister: order + repose;

>>go farther: Sant’ Andrea delle Valle, Carlo Maderno, 1650, Piazza Vidoni / Piazza delle Valle.
>>go farther: Il Gesú, Vignola, 1568; facade, Giacomo della Porta, 1575.
>>go farther: Il Tempietto (Chiostre di S. Pietro in Montorio), Bramante, 1502.

ITINERARIO 4 : DAY 4 OR 5 [guided/self-guided]
Baroque II: le ville di Roma:
Villa Medici, Annibale Lippi/Bartolomeo Ammannati, 1654-
• <Vigna del Pigneto, Pietro da Cortona, b1630>
Villa Borghese, Flaminio Ponzio, 1613-15
Villa Guilia, G B Vignola. B Ammanati, 1551

>>go farther: Villa Farnesina, B. Peruzzi
• document: the villa and the garden

ITINERARIO 5 : DAY 6 OR 7 [guided/self-guided]
Baroque III: rivals
S. Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, Francesco Borromini, 1634-84
S Andrea al Quirinale, GL Bernini, 1658-1661
• We compared the Capella Chigi (chapel) at Santa Maria del Popolo and St Ivo alla Sapienza. Think, too, about the church façade and chiostre (cloister) at Santa Maria della Pace. Now, with Borromini and Bernini close by, you begin to understand that, despite their common appropriation of classical motifs, their architectural intent is very different: Borromini morphs and warps his classically derived surfaces to shape and layer space in thrilling and dynamic ways. Bernini, for his part, upholds the tectonic order of his classically derived forms, reveling both in the richness of their materiality and in the rigor of their construction. Such is the very modern argument these two buildings present, and which continues to this day.

>>go farther: Palazzo Barberini, Carlo Maderno, 1625; completed by GL Bernini, c1630

ITNERARIO 6 : DAY 10 [autobus/guided on the road to naples]
Roma moderna
• Mausoleo delle Fosse Ardeatine, Mario Fiorentino, 1945/48
Autostrada del Sole (A1 to Napoli)
Ristorante Autogrille
• document: circulation + lunch
EUR optional
• Decima optional
• Corviale optional

By Cara Sulieman

A FUTURE Scots tennis star tipped for success by Tim Henman and Andy Murray’s mum could see her career stall – after the recession left her dad redundant.

Emma Devine’s father Kenneth has lost his job, meaning her parents won’t be able to pay for her expensive training regime any longer.

Kenneth and wife Kathy Devine have been coughing up the £35,000 annual bill for Emma to attend the Justine Henin tennis camp in Belgium where she is trained by Carlos Rodriguez.

But now they face pulling her out of the camp for financial reasons – damaging the 14-year-old’s future in the sport.

“Ask for help”

Kenneth said: “It is tragic to think that a bright prospect like her might not be able to reach her full potential because there just isn’t the money to fund it. But there’s nothing we can do.

“We tried last year to raise sponsorship for her by contacting major companies and financial institutions in Edinburgh to ask for help – but there was nothing. They seem to prefer sponsoring corporate events.

“Emma has worked hard for her sport for a very long time. Now it looks like that hard work has been for nothing.

“It was difficult for us to fund her last year, but we did it, having been told by Judy Murray, Andy’s mother, that Emma has huge potential. But we can’t financially carry on.”

Foot the bill

Kenneth is an accountant at Telford College but has been told he will be made redundant from the middle of next month.

He is worried that it will be hard for him to find another job, never mind foot the bill for Emma’s couching.

He said: “I’m 52 years old, so it’s not going to be terribly easy for me to suddenly find another job.

“So it’s going to be virtually impossible for Emma to carry on.”

Tim Henman

The young star is appearing in a showcase display at Wimbledon with Tim Henman, who has been her supporter since he saw her win the HSBC Road to Wimbledon under-14s tournament.

All England Club head coach Dan Bloxham said: “Emma is a real powerhouse from the baseline like Venus or Serena Williams.”

The teenager learned and improved her game at Craiglockhart in Edinburgh before her family were advised to send her to Belgium by Andy Murray’s mum, Judy.

But now it seems that the star will leave the tennis academy in September and return home – her dreams in tatters.

I think it’s safe to say that the newest issue of Secret Six is the weakest one thus far.

I think it’s safe to say that the newest issue of Secret Six is the weakest one thus far. At some indeterminate time after the events of the whirlwind beginning arc, the Six are relaxing, for reasons which are not at all explained. We’re reintroduced to Liana Kerzner, the lesbian stripper that the Six hired to try and make Scandal Savage feel better after Knockout was killed. We also get to see a really funny guy named Insignificus who works for Jeannette, though we have know idea in why or in what capacity. Ultimately, she and Scandal double date along with Deadshot and Jeannette, beginning at a superhero-themed costume club. Some Neo-Nazi guy from earlier in the series comes and tries to kill them, but fails miserably multiple times. Scandal decides to start some kind of relationship with Liana, and Ragdoll gets his own segment after he is locked in the Six’s car trunk for a few days.

This issue surprised me, because it was nowhere near as good as the past ones. For one, there’s no setup as to what’s going on, who Insignificus actually is, or anything else. The Six are oddly forgiving of Deadshot, and I have no idea what happened to Bane. The dialogue is funny at some times but bizarre at others, especially during the awkward morality dialogue. Then there’s Carlos Rodriguez. His art is a bad combination of that of Nicola Scott and Eddy Barrows. At times, a person’s face looks like it’s just melting into itself. The Ragdoll segment is just odd, and not in the funny way that he normally acts. Amanda Gould’s art is just disturbing, and likewise not in a good way. I’m sure part of this is because Gail Simone is in the middle of two big arcs, and this was meant to provide a bridge. While it was amusing at parts, this was not the kind of bridge I was hoping for. Since I know that Gail Simone will do better later, I’ll just think of this issue as the result of a few bad days or something.

Plot: 7.8 Art: 7.2 Dialogue: 8.2 Overall: 7.8

This is a new feature. Let me know what you guys think. I read 26 comics in April, and these were the best.

But first, let’s kick things off with the worst book of the month:

Batman: Battle for the Cowl #2

Written by Tony Daniel

Illustrated by Tony Daniel

Published by DC Comics

No, this wasn’t actually the worst book of the month, but it was the worst I read. And the fact that it’s so high-profile, gives me all the more reason to bash it. But, to be fair, this isn’t a terrible comic. In fact, I wish it were a terrible comic, because then, at least, it’d be a bit interesting. What we have here, is forgettable, generic hogwash. I suppose, if you were a huge fan of Tony Daniel, you might have a bit of a good time. I’m not that fan. Again, Tony Daniel isn’t terrible. In fact, if we were ranking mediocre 90’s, Post-Jim Lee artists, Daniel is near the top of the list. However, that’s still not nearly enough to keep me entertained while reading a story completely written for the art. Why the hell did DC let Daniel write this? “Hmm, what writer should we get to follow Grant Morrison? I know! Tony Daniel!” I could write more, but I’ve bashed this comic more than enough. This book isn’t even that fun to hate.

5. Secret Warriors #3

Written by Jonathan Hickman & Brian Michael Bendis

Illustrated by Stefano Caselli

Published by Marvel Comics

Wow! Who knew I was craving a book like this? Oh wait, I did! I’m awesome! Only three issues in, and Secret Warriors is arguably the best comic that Marvel is currently publishing. It’s definitely the most exciting. First, we got that kick in the pants about Hydra. Then, we got the return of the freakin’ Gorgon. This issue’s Dum Dum reveal really wasn’t that exciting, but who knew that some of Phobos’ prophecies from the second issue would already come to pass? Oh, and Gorgon said something like, “Someday, I will kill a god.” Yeah, whenever a badass talks about killing gods, it’s always pretty cool.

4. The Boys #29

Written by Garth Ennis

Illustrated by Darick Robertson

Published by Dynamite Entertainment

This was the conclusion of “We Gotta Go Now,” an arc that spent a little too much time on masturbation jokes. But man, did this issue blow the damn doors down. First, we get the chilling truth about the G-Men. Then, Hughie gets his badass moment. And…well, the shit pretty much hits the fan after that.

3. The Walking Dead #60

Written by Robert Kirkman

Illustrated by Charlie Adlard

Published by Image Comics

It’s always hard to rate The Walking Dead on an issue to issue basis. That’s probably the reason why most people read it in trade. However, with this issue featuring the conclusion of that horde business, the ever-growing madness of Morgan, and the feeling that Dale may finally turn on Rick, this was a terrific installment.

2. Secret Six #8

Written by Gail Simone

Illustrated by Carlos Rodriguez

Published by DC Comics

Ah, Secret Six, a title that never fails to put a big, stupid grin on my face. Actually, I wasn’t too impressed with the last issue. It wasn’t bad, but for the conclusion of the first arc, which was pretty awesome, it just wasn’t completely satisfying. This issue, however, was sweet and charming, while still managing to provide all that sick, twisted humor that the book continues to deliver. Oh, and Tiny Secret Six? Classic.

1. Detective Comics #853

Written by Neil Gaiman

Illustrated by Andy Kubert

Published by DC Comics

So, I guess this arc wasn’t nearly as well-recieved as people hoped, huh? Then again, a lot of people don’t care for Morrison’s run, either. So what the hell do people know? Gaiman managed to pack everything he could about Batman into just two issues. He does a good job expressing the appeal of Batman, touching on everything from his love to his mortality. However, the undisputed star here is Andy Kubert. He produces possibly the best work of his career. Well, I don’t know if it’s better than Batman #666. I love that issue.

Read my full review here.

Pretty even between Marvel, DC, and Indies, but DC did snag the top two. Then again, DC was also responsible for the worst book of the month. Overall, I’d say that April was a pretty good month for comics. All five of these books were a hell of a read.
