FOND DU LAC CO. — Carly Ottery, the teenage driver charged in a crash that killed three Campbellsport High School students back in February was sentenced Monday, November 5th.

19-year-old Ottery received a sentence of one year in Huber, and six years of probation. Ottery pleaded no contest to three counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.

Ottery faced up to 30 years in jail.

The crash happened just north of Highway 67 in the Township of Ashford on February 4th. Sabrina Stahl, Katie Berg and Caitlin Scannell all died from their injuries. Ottery and five other students were hurt.

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff said in February that speed and failure to wear seat belts were factors in the crash. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in this crash.

A crash reconstruction expert estimated the Chevy Tahoe was traveling between 103 and 109 miles per hour at time when Ottery lost control of the vehicle.

Minutes after the crash, Ottery is said to have told a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy she hit a “dip” on Beechnut Road that “makes your belly drop” before the vehicle became airborne.

Ottery is also alleged to have said her speed caused her to lose control of the Tahoe, saying “I was driving fast because it was cool,” adding that she was a “stupid (expletive) teenager.” Ottery also allegedly said the passengers “weren’t wearing their seat belts, and that’s why they flew so (expletive) far out of the car.”

In court on Monday, there were so many who wanted to speak about the crash and its impact that the sentencing hearing took nearly the entire day. The courtroom was filled with people wearing pink, purple and coral — the favorite colors of those killed in the horrific February crash.

Many wrote letters to the judge — enough to fill four binders and folders.

Theresa Flood, who was one of those injured in the crash, asked that Ottery not go to jail.

“It’s not right one person should be punished for an accident that could have been avoided by any of us with a simple command to slow down,” Flood said.

Meanwhile, the families of those killed asked that Ottery receive jail time.

“We do not give a darn if some of those girls were yelling ‘go faster’ or not. Only Ms. Ottery was behind the wheel,” Judy Erdman said.

Ottery did not speak in court Monday. Her lawyer said he told her not to. However, Ottery’s mother did speak.

“No one condoned what happened. Many of us were feeling ‘but for the grace of God, go I,’” Ottery’s mother said.

While both Ottery’s lawyer and the prosecution recommended probation for Ottery, the judge said jail time was needed for a crash so horrific.

WINNEBAGO CO. — Carly Ottery, the teenage driver charged in a crash that killed three Campbellsport High School students back in February made her first appearance in court Tuesday morning. After the initial appearance Ottery was released on a $5,000 signature bond.

The crash happened just north of Highway 67 in the Township of Ashford on Saturday, February 4th.

Ottery was charged with three counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. If convicted, she faces up to ten years in prison and $25,000 in fines for each charge.

Ottery will be back in court in July. The Winnebago County District Attorney expects this case will resolve with a plea agreement of some kind.

“These are difficult circumstances, but it’s also a slippery slope. At what point do you say the penalty for the crime is living with the consequences of what you did? Quite honestly I’ve never prosecuted a drunk driver who killed somebody who said ‘well I was hoping after I got drunk to run into that family and kill them,’ so they have to live with the consequences too,” Winnebago County DA Christian Gossett said.

[ooyala code="gxaWZoMzqi7hPzSEcKw-yI8AodKKxUaR"] CAMPBELLSPORT — Thursday was a day of mournin

[ooyala code="gxaWZoMzqi7hPzSEcKw-yI8AodKKxUaR"]

CAMPBELLSPORT — Thursday was a day of mourning and comfort for the community of Campbellsport, as visitations for the three Campbellsport High School girls killed in the one-vehicle crash early Saturday was held Thursday afternoon at Campbellsport High School. 15-year-old Sabrina Stahl, 16-year-old Katie Berg and 17-year-old Caitlin Scannell died when the SUV left a road in the Town of Ashford and rolled over.

Hundreds gathered to pay their respects during the visitation at Campbellsport High School that began at 3 p.m. Thursday. It was expected to end around 7 p.m. The visitation was organized by Twohig Funeral Homes.

In the small town of Campbellsport, everyone from the school crossing guard to those from local businesses – all came together Thursday afternoon in the high school gym for a visitation to lend support to family members of the three athletes killed in the SUV rollover not far from the school. Stahl, Berg and Scannell were killed, and six others were injured. “We have three ribbons here – rolled into one. Pink, purple and coral. My sister, Caitlin Scannell, her favorite color was coral, so this is to honor their memory,” Ryan Scannell said.

Ryan Scannell lost his sister in the crash. A memory board near her casket Thursday depicts happy times in Caitlin’s life. Scannell says his sister started each day with a smile. Ryan has set up a scholarship in Caitlin’s name, so her enthusiasm for life and school can live on. “It means a lot to us to know that my sister was such an important part of the community, and had done so much good and positive work here, and to see the community coming and giving us support – it really means a lot,” Scannell said.

At the scene of the crash, a friend of Stahl’s tried to make sense of the rollover accident that claimed so many lives. “Hopefully it’s just a little lesson for everyone that we need to be careful and wear our seatbelts, and it’s been a rough week,” Alex Wilson said.

Even teens who don’t know the victim’s personally feel close to what happened. “When we were going down the street, we were going so slow, because we didn’t want anything to happen,” Kathryn Nejedlo said.

The funerals for the girls will be held Friday. Ryan Scannell says a more permanent memorial of some sort will be erected on the school’s soccer field, in memory of all three girls.

—

The survivors of the SUV crash that killed three Campbellsport High School students are making progress in their recovery.

Allie Adams is in fair condition at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, while Theresa Flood is in good condition. Both girls are 16. 17-year-old Kassandra Anderson, Haley Fricke and Carly Ottery, both 18, have been released from hospitals. The condition of 16-year-old Jessica Harbin has not been released.
