[worldnow id=7785110 width=420 height=315 type=video]

WEST LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Seven people were cited on Sunday for allegedly entering closed portions of the 405 Freeway.

Amy Johnson, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, said they consisted of four rollerbladers, a newlywed couple and one pedestrian.

Earlier Sunday, KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO reported via Twitter that the newlyweds were cited on the Sunset Boulevard on-ramp of the southbound 405 Freeway.

The couple was spotted about 3:40 a.m., said California Highway Patrol officer Charmaine Fajardo.

Officials urged motorists and residents to steer clear of the closed freeway.

Johnson also said a tourist couple from Europe was not cited as they went on the freeway by accident.

Former professional skateboarder Cindy Whitehead, a Hermosa Beach resident, was also not cited. She thought it would be fun to skate down a stretch of the freeway around 8 a.m.

Johnson spoke to Whitehead and her husband about their daring two-minute caper.

Whitehead’s husband, professional photographer Ian Logan, took a series of photos. “We just thought it would be a very iconic photo to make,” she explained.

Said Logan, “We thought it would be an opportunity to do something that was completely California. Freeways and skateboards? It was, you know, you gotta try it.”

Whitehead knew there were risks involved. She had the names and phone numbers of a bail bondsman, a friend and an attorney written in marker on her arms, just in case she was arrested.

She said, “I was hoping people would see the good natured-ness in it. I wasn’t trying to harm anyone. I wasn’t trying to be dangerous.”

Whitehead adds, “I’m glad I did it. I’m glad it’s done. It was a lot of fun, it was fun for two minutes. And it’s something I can say I have done. Not too many people can say they have ridden the 405 Freeway on a skateboard.”

Let the madness begin! Carmageddon II (not a movie) officially kicks off tonight at around 7pm. The 405 ramps will begin to CLOSE and starting at 10pm the freeway closures will be right behind. By midnight, all the southbound lanes will be SHUT DOWN, CLOSED, NOT OPEN between the Ventura Freeway and Getty Center Drive and the northbound lanes will be NON DRIVEABLE, DON’T GO THERE, NOT ACCESSABLE between Santa Monica and Ventura Freeways. The 405 Freeway will be back in business Monday morning at 5 a.m….repeat 5AM!

In the meantime dust off that bike, blow up them tires and enjoy a car free weekend.
The 405fwy from the 10 to 101fwy is shutting down this weekend. This sounds like a bummer when you

The 405fwy from the 10 to 101fwy is shutting down this weekend. This sounds like a bummer when you’re asking yourself, “Ugh, how can we get to the beach when it’s going to be 100 degrees this weekend?” But actually, here are five reasons why Carmageddon doesn’t suck that hard.

1) Last year, everyone stayed home, so no one was driving. That meant there was virtually no traffic. Which means you can roller blade down Wilshire Blvd. in neon booty shorts at 3pm and practically no one will see you. OK, that’s a lie, but if you decide to do this, please let us know so JACK FM can follow you and document it.

2) Metro LA has some local events you can check out. Yep, we have public transportation in Los Angeles. Nope, it’s not really that sketchy. In fact, some of the stations are like urban museums with unique, interesting artwork. And lots of weirdo eye candy in the form of your fellow Angelenos.

3) You can listen to JACK FM in your house all day. Shockingly, some establishments actually play OTHER KINDS OF RADIO. Why go somewhere that isn’t playing JACK FM? Thanks to Carmageddon 2.0 you will never miss another “bunch of songs in a row.”

4) You can save money. Going out costs money. Staying in costs little to no money. Back in the old days, when only rich people had cars, more people saved money. Actually, we don’t know if that’s true, but we couldn’t think of five full reasons why Carmageddon doesn’t suck so we just made something semi-reasonable up.

5) If you stay home, you don’t have any reason to use iPhone’s new map app. Which just totally blows and is practically impossible to use. We know Apple apologized, but with cumbersome 3D and a snarky Siri giving driving directions, we’d rather use a Thomas Guide. Remember those?

Wow, JACK FM is old.

It’s baaaaack!! This weekend, CalTrans will be shutting down a large section of the 405 freeway in order to demolish a portion of the Mullholland Bridge.

Part one of Carmageddon, which took place in July of 2011, went off without any major traffic issues since most people stayed off the roads.

This time around, will people do the same or will we ignore the warning? There’s no way to predict what will happen, but here’s everything you need to know about this weekend’s closure!

How To Still Have Fun During Carmageddon 2!

Both sides of the 405 freeway will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30.

The northbound side will be shut down between the 10 and the 101 and the southbound side from Burbank Boulevard north of the 101 down to the Getty Center Drive on-ramp.

Carmageddon is just part of the Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project that will eventually widen the 405 freeway and add a carpool lane through the Sepulveda Pass.

Even though a full closure isn’t expected until midnight on Saturday morning, crews will start closing ramps as early as 7 p.m. on Friday. Individual lanes will begin closing at 10 p.m.

Ending early like last year isn’t likely because CalTrans has about 30% more work to do in the same amount of time.

As of now, the 405 is scheduled to re-open at 5 a.m. on Monday, just in time for the morning commute.

Sepulveda Boulevard will be open over the weekend, but officials warn that the alternate route is likely to take the brunt of the traffic.

Hundreds of businesses are offering discounts over the weekend. Check out Metro’s “Eat, Shop, and Play Locally” interactive map to find deals in your area or check out the full list of retailers here.

[worldnow id=7776792 width=420 height=315 type=video]

SEPULVEDA PASS (CBSLA.com) — As final preparations take place for this weekend’s Carmageddon II, opinions differ on whether the 405 freeway reconstruction project in the Sepulveda Pass will even make much of a difference to the average commuter.

Caltrans executives and local officials believe the Sepulveda Pass Improvement Project, which will expand the 405 and add a longer commuter lane, will relieve congestion, increase the flow of traffic, and speed up the commute back and forth for drivers.

Sharm Schaffler hopes the freeway work will at least bring temporary relief to commuters.

“The 405 needs to be fixed. It’s a major highway, it shouldn’t be like that,” he said.

Veteran traffic school teacher Kenny Morse, aka Mr. Traffic, said expanding the 405 won’t make a difference.

“Carpool lanes certainly aren’t the answer. It’d be nice if they were,” he said.

Morse, who hosts a national radio talk show on transportation and founded a popular Los Angeles traffic website, said fixing crumbling infrastructure is important.

However, he said the billion dollars should be spent on a solution that would really make a difference, such as rapid transit.

The entire road project is expected to be finished in late 2013.

Who says that time is a healer? Stainless Games certainly doesn’t think so, as it has demonstrated by lovingly digitizing Double Fine Production’s Tim Schafer for its Carmageddon: Reincarnation Kickstarter campaign, then running him over. Three times. (Check around the 3:09 mark in this video.)

Schafer’s crime? His classic point-and-click adventure, Grim Fandango, beat Stainless’ vehicular-combat game Carmageddon 2 to the number-one spot in sales, way back in 1998. Stainless co-founder Neil Barnden says it was a close thing, with Carmageddon 2 being edged out “by about 40 copies sold.”

Schafer, of course, is largely responsible for the huge wave of gaming Kickstarter campaigns we are currently seeing, since bagging a record $3.3M for the proposed “Double Fine Adventure.” The irony of this is not lost on Barnden, who remarks: “It’s a small world, but we have long memories…Tim,” before playing a clip of the digitized Schafer being pursued and knocked down.

Not content with simply running Schafer over once, his flattened image is also used to promote the $1,000 Kickstarter pledge package called “Fatal Immortality.” The reward for this level of donation is to have your likeness, or that of someone you dislike, inserted into the game as a pedestrian.

The third appearance of Schafer is on the Stainless Games website, where he is attached, rather uncomfortably, to the front grille of a dump truck.

Schafer appears to be taking the stunt in typically good humor, as it was presumably intended. When pointed via Twitter to the fact that, “there is a terrifying [flattened image] of your face on the BBC news,” Schafer replied: “Is ‘terrifying’ the British word for ‘arousing’?”

The Carmageddon: Reincarnation Kickstarter is looking for $400K and is currently on $173K after just a few days. Very much in the spirit of the original PC game, Carmageddon: Reincarnation will apparently “reintroduce the gaming world to the original free-form driving sensation, where pedestrians (and cows) equal points, and your opponents are a bunch of crazies in a twisted mix of automotive killing machines.”

By now you should have heard about the dreaded Carmageddon – what LA is calling the 405 freew

By now you should have heard about the dreaded Carmageddon – what LA is calling the 405 freeway shutdown this weekend July 16th – July 17th. Technically the freeway closes this evening at 6pm between the 101 and 10 freeways and opens up again on Monday morning at 6am just in time for rush hour. With pandemonium striking many motorists who rely on that 10 mile stretch of already brutal freeway traffic to get anywhere in LA, it’s no wonder the mayor is pleading with people to either leave the city or stay at home and explore their neighborhood. As a result, businesses are hoping to cash in on extra traffic from locals trying to avoid the freeways. Here are a few ‘Carmageddon Deals’ for this weekend:
