Another blogger recently wrote:

“Below the frostline now lay today what remains of the sad, frozen bones of Abby and Andrew Borden- still headless, -  and now their likenesses and characters the fodder for irreverent cartoons, gift products and unspeakable accusations made without a shred of evidence.  Those who once were loved and walked among us.  Does the interval of Time allow for such insensitive liberties?  Is murder ever a source for humor?”

I don’t pretend to mourn the deaths of Andrew and Abby Borden.  I didn’t know them.  They didn’t walk amongst me.  Their deaths, tragic and horrible, were no less tragic and horrible than those of hundreds of thousands throughout history whose deaths were in service to our country, or the individual citizen who rushed towards fatal danger in  a sacrifice to save another.

The death of Abby and Andrew were no less tragic and horrible as are those of thousands of kidnapped, abused and murdered children of the last century, the last decade, the last year.  Those are the ones to which I can relate.  As can any mother.   I can mourn for my neighbor’s wife who just passed from cancer.  I knew her.  She walked amongst me.

But I will not pretend a sappy, maudlin and false sensitivity about mourning the death of Abby and Andrew Borden.  If humorous characterizations (and there are tons of them) are considered irreverent and those that consider them funny are insensitive, then so be it.  Let those who find it distasteful deal with it.   The interval of Time did not give birth to such liberties.  Irreverent humor has been a part of American culture since man first put pen to paper.

Let those who hide behind their works in the church and profess a reverent Christian POV (yes, I refer to the blogger quoted above of whom I know personally) while living a life of phony pretenses for purposes of popularity throw stones.  Myself, and many like me, are quite adept at dodging them.  Besides, if you believe in neither heaven nor hell the dictates of the Christian consequence are rendered moot.

Having said all that, I now present more such humor.  View them or not.  Like them or not.  (Click links below images – have sound on).

O Bispo de Roma foi pessoalmente conversar com o Português e explicar que ele não podia fazer isso. Então o português resolveu fazer um novo outdoor. Colocou Cristo com uma das mãos pregadas na cruz e a outra solta, dando tchau. Embaixo estava escrito:

I am sure it is becoming obvious to most of you that the additional calorie and alcohol content of my long weekend has left me too lazy to come up with anything of real value to write about. So today I will bring you some interesting answers to the ‘other’ section of yesterday’s poll . To refresh your memories these refer to Gary’s ingenious clementine peel.

Nos últimos posts, tenho demonstrado um certo saraivismo e posição às vezes leveeeemente antipática com a moda, né? Bom, nunca escondi que era Saraiva!!! hehehehehe! Sou bem bronquinha mesmo, mas não sou do contra à toa – tudo tem seu fundamento.

Uma das minhas implicâncias é com a Lady Gaga. Coitada, deixa ela ser feliz, mas não vejo nada de genial nela, porque não acho que montação seja algo inédito no showbizz e porque é quase evidente que ela é um produto da gravadora – quem já viu fotos dela antiga pôde perceber a mudança gradativa de uma Alanis Morisette dos teclados para uma Bjork sem originalidade. Sim, eu to ácida! Me deixa que eu to de bode!

Querem ver como na história da música brasileira (não precisamos ir muito longe…) podemos encontrar figuras bem excêntricas?

Carmen Miranda, vou colocar aqui como nossa primeira figura exótica – mas levando em consideração o período antes de virar estrela de Hollywood, porque lá ela não criava seus figurinos e chegou a um nível de exuberância kitsch. Da época do filme Banana da Terra até a hora em que embarcou para algumas apresentações em terras yankees, Carmen, que antes se vestia de mandeira “normal” nos shows, passou a se vestir com a famosa fantasia de baiana, com frutas na cabeça e cheia de balangandãs.

Achei esta foto na Bravo! especial dos Beatles e achei maaaaravilhosa, as cores, o contraste. Em technicolor! Os Mutantes, além das experimentações musicais e das letras irreverentes, causavam com seus figurinos de show. Rita Lee chocou o Brasil careta (e sua própria mãe, segundo o livro A Divina Comédia dos Mutantes) ao aparecer em um Festival da Canção vestida de noiva grávida (barriga cênica, claro!). Eles se apresentavam de menestréis medievais e com outros figurinos estranhos.

A própria Rita, na sua carreira fora dos Mutantes e até hoje, é bem ousadinha no quesito figurino (e em tudo né? ÍDOLA, RAINHA, DIVAAAA!), como podemos ver nesta foto de 78.

Depois que voltaram do exílio em Londres, Caetano e Gil vieram cheios de idéias estéticas mudernosas que podemos ver no figurino beeeeeeeeeeeeeeem estranho que usavam nas apresentações do Doces Bárbaros. Quando eu vi esta foto, achei que o Caetano fosse o de branco, JURO! Mas ele é o de amarelo. Androgenia + índio + África + futurismo + misturada da Bahia… adoooro!

Acho que um dos fenômenos da nossa música mais sui generis foi o Secos e Molhados. Tem coisa mais moderna que homens pintados, com roupas absurdas e com o Ney Matogrosso (deus!) cantando com voz de falsete e rebolando sensualmente?

Gente, o Brasil estava sob uma ditadura militar, como estes artistas (menos a Carmen, mas se bem que ela pegou a época da ditadura do Estado Novo) acima conseguiram fazer algo tão incrível e nós, absolutamente livres, não produzimos mais nada de novo, de inusitado, de “divinomaravilhoso”?

Talvez porque estamos ligados de mais em Ladies Gagas da vida… não?

I’ve already grown tired of dressing appropriately for the cold weather, although I’ve still been trotting round in a tweed blazer rather than a full-on winter coat, so taking a peak at Fam Irvoll’s SS10 collection has lifted my fashion spirits (which took a dent after seeing Heidi Montag wearing those sequinned Miu Miu socks early this morning).

Fam is a Norwegian designer who shows at Oslo Fashion Week and has just been taken on by Blow PR, so we’ll be seeing much more of her nutty knitwear over here.

After studying at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode, Fam came to Central St Martins for her BA (Hon) in Fashion Knitwear, graduating in 2008.

Fam’s colourful past collections have featured shrunked dolly dresses, sweaters with 3D ladybirds and ice lollies, ruffled prom dresses and a quirky mouse bustier top – all in eye-popping colours.  My personal diagnosis of Fam’s style would be part Sonia Rykiel crossed with Grayson Perry and My Little Pony – not a bad combo, I might add!

Celeb fans already include Mika and Lady Gaga, who apparently called up Fam and ordered a 3D cherry sweater and a cake headpiece.

But quickly on to Fam’s SS10 collection, I Love Gays, which is dominantly nautical with Hawaiian and 50s rockabilly influences.  It’s very sailor girl meets Dorothy with a bit of Dolly Parton thrown in for good measure.

For summer, Fam has traded in her magenta and purples for more primary colours like banana yellow, pillarbox red and cobalt blue.

The collection features embellished denim, flirty sailor dresses, tutti frutti prints, cherry print skirts, playtime tomboy shorts and a striped jumpsuit with a proud-looking 3D flamingo standing guard.

I absolutely adore the sparkling sailboat headpieces and there are plenty of other accessories to keep your wardrobe entertained, like blue and red bow bobby socks, ruby slippers and berry and floral headbands in the style of Brazilian samba queen Carmen Miranda.  It would really make my day if there was a Fred Butler or Tatty Devine collaboration on the cards – I reckon they could make some mad pieces together.

Linda e cheia de paetês.

Esse vestido escandaloso que a minha BFF Kate está usando é da coleção dela para a incrível Top Shop (só eu fiquei pasma de ela ter esse corpo aos 35 anos mesmo depois de ter sido mãe?!). Eu mega amei porque o paetê, assim como o tule, é o novo preto. ha-ha.

Nas minhas últimas viagens eu pirei no paetê, comprando jaqueta, malha e até mesmo uma legging-palco que ainda não tive coragem de usar pelas ruas de São Paulo. Assim como esses itens, acho que esse vestido da Kate é tipo aquelas peças que, depois que a gente compra, viram parte da família. Não sei se vocês têm isso também, mas tenho algumas roupas que amo tanto que tenho até dó de usar.

Tenho um casaquinho vermelho que comprei na Top Shop em 2001 que não usei mais de dez vezes, com medo de gastar. Gente, dez vezes em OITO ANOS! Oi, tenho problema?! Tenho também uma camiseta com a estampa da capa do The Catcher in the Rye que comprei em agosto do ano passado na Urban Outfitters que ainda nem experimentei. Isso sem falar num vestido lindo da Cavalera preto com uma estampa nas costas super colorida-tropical-carmem-miranda que gastei os tubos em 2005 e usei, tipo, duas vezes desde então.

Juro que não é desperdício nem falta do que fazer, mas é que muitas vezes acho essas peças tão especiais que dá dó de gastar usando pra ir trabalhar no Limão ou pra um fim de noite em qualquer bar sujo da Augusta. Né não?!

Natural plumage or artificial? Can YOU tell?

Fact:  At any given moment in the U.S.A., there are at least three gangs struggling for control over the lucrative parakeet trade.  Fact:  If you trace the provenance of any given parakeet in the nation, you will find periods of unaccounted for time, aka: evidence of illegal smuggling.  Fact:  Not a single parakeet has been born in the U.S.A. since 1943– the year when the first parakeet sterilization facilities were established along the border with Mexico.  Fact:  All of this is thanks to me.

Like most enterprises, it all started very simply, very small, and as the result of a wager.  It was between me, James Cagney, and movie producer David Sebastian.  We were all out to win Carmen Miranda’s heart.  I was sure I would win.  After all, I’m a fair sight better looking than those two mutts Cagney and Sebatian were.  And as often as I’ve wooed man and woman alike with nothing more than the seductive removal of my lion’s mane jacket to reveal my lion’s teeth neckpiece, I knew that I’d have to go the extra 100 yards for Miranda.  After all, this was Cagney, James Cagney, Yankee Doodle Dandy James Cagney.  He was the whole damn country squeezed into a pair of pants.  Who could resist the man?

I thought long and hard about what the lovely Miss Miranda liked before I realized– hats.  The woman was wild for hats.  I had to find the most incredible hat available.  I pounded the pavement of New York and Milan, Paris and Tashkent, visiting the world’s finest milliners and haberdashers.  But nothing could compare to the ineffable hat I imagined must exist out there, waiting to perch on Miranda’s head.  It was then that it dawned on me… perch.  Like a bird.  Like a flock of parakeets. Who wants a hat that simply lies there, when the possibility exists for it to flap its wings?  I would sew (or glue… I wasn’t sure which yet) a flock of parakeets to a hat for Carmen Miranda.  I leapt from my seat and took off running, so eager was I to begin.  I happened to be on a ferry at the time, and was so excited that I leapt from the deck and began swimming.  This was the day that I swam half the English Channel.

What followed was months of trial and error.  I recognize that the first hat I made was crude.  The hot glue was visible from all angles, and most of the parakeets perished in the box on Ms. Miranda’s front porch, unaware was I that she was filming on location in the Rockies.  It really put a crimp in my plans when I was brought into police custody for questioning; Miranda had called the authorities, thinking that perhaps the Brazilian mob had sent her a message, or that she had a stalker.  Me, a stalker?  Ha ha, I would have known she was away had I been stalking her.  But I did learn my lesson from this incident, and sacrificed the services of one of my butlers in order to have him trail her day in and day out.  It was a rough few months, as he was the only one who could properly polish the pewter bedpan set.  But what could I do?  I felt Cagney’s Doodle-y visage taunting me by day, and he troubled my dreams at night.  I would best the Yank.

In addition, I was experimenting so extensively with the parakeets that I’d nearly exhausted the native flocks of the U.S.A.  I began importing.  I soon realized that I was competing for birds with a number of pet shop owners and carrier bird companies.  By default, I built a parakeet empire from my headquarters in south-central Arizona.

After about eight months, I’d finally created it– a six-foot tall hat, resplendent with living parakeets in all colors of the parakeet.  In truth, they were all albino parakeets that I had taken the time to paint by hand so that they would represent the most ideal possible plumage variations of the species.  I invited Cagney, Sebastian and Miranda to a grand gala at the Cocoanut Grove, fully expecting Miranda to fall into my arms when she laid eyes upon the gift I’d wrought with my own two hands, and the help of the 30 hat-makers I’d employed.  Unfortunately, things did not go quite as planned.  As it turns out, Sebastian had all but won the challenge already– he’d taken a much more effective, yet inelegant path– he’d been plying Miranda with booze.  They later married.  It was Cagney, instead, who fell into my arms.  He’d been charmed when he first saw me remove my lion’s mane coat, but was gone when he imagined me in that hat.  And thus began our four year long affair, which would have bordered somewhat on the bestial if you removed the tap shoes.

Essa pauta veio de uma conversa de skype que me fez refletir.

Eu já ouvi negativas aqui quando eu falo que detalhes fazem a diferença nos negócios, mas é o que separa o preço valor de uma joia da Hstern e um colar de plástico da 25 de março.

Detalhes são importantes, pelo menos para mim, eles mostram mais do que a sua habilidade em fazer determinado produto ou prestar um serviço, são eles que te vendem: nada como ser bem atendido por exemplo, mesmo que o produto tenha algum problema, se você é bem atendido você não se emputece e sai xingando.

E ao contrário, quando você liga para algum call center apenas atrás de uma informação e é mal atendido, o produto pode ser excelente, você vai xingar até a última geração do presidente da empresa e do incompetente que te atendeu.

Ta vendo? detalhes criam juízos de valor,  são eles quem criam o boca-a-boca sobre o seu produto. Principalmente na internet, em que uma conversa de MSN, um post, um tweet, podem convencer um amigo no skype ou um desavisado qualquer de quão bom ou ruim é seu produto.

Bebel Gilberto Fail

O Site da cantora Bebel Gilberto por exemplo http://www.bebelgilberto.com.br/ está todo em inglês.

Não é problema nenhum ter um site em inglês de um cantor brasileiro, o problema está em não ter NENHUMA página em português.

E qual o problema em não se ter nenhuma página em português?  Para Norte-Americanos e o povão do país onde ela mora nenhum, mas e os fans brasileiros?  E quem gosta mas não entende inglês faz o que? desgosta!

Mesmo para quem entende é chato. Meu amigo por exemplo, que ia comprar o CD dela e não vai mais; vai, no máximo, baixar.  E isso é o que eu chamo de perder dinheiro por pequenos detalhes.

Nesse trabalho novo, Bebel homenageia Carmen Miranda, um ícone brasileiro que sofreu bastante preconceito por ter se mudado para Hollywood e se americanizado, tem até um documentário muito bom sobre os 100 anos do nascimento de Carmen, agora em 2009 que acho que a Bebel não viu.

Não me entenda mal, tem 5 cidades em que eu amaria morar nesse mundo, moro em uma delas, mas na lista tem sem sombra de dúvida NY. Quem me conhece já me viu ruminando pensamentos meus sozinho em inglês, espanhol ou francês a maior parte do tempo, faço isso para praticar mais os idiomas e não sou a favor de brasileirismo ou qualquer outro tipo  de nacionalismo de lugar algum, mas antes de tudo, eu sei falar muito bem o português.

A capa do site tem a música de trabalho do CD , que é uma regravação cantada em português, num site totalmente em inglês. Então porquê não ter ao menos uma opção EN/PT no site?

É um detalhe, mas não é exagero dizer que faz toda a diferença.

However, though the press release emphasizes the Republican Party’s “commitment to the Hispanic community,” apparently that commitment does not include hiring a qualified Spanish translator. The Spanish translation of Steele’s statement is riddled with embarrassing typos and errors.

The substance of the accompanying video isn’t much better. Its main focus is on highlighting the accomplishments of conservative Latinos and completely ignores renowned Latino leaders like civil rights activists César Chávez and Dolores Huerta, and completely sidesteps the recent confirmation of Puerto Rican Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The video doesn’t even acknowledge one of the Republican Party’s most respected leader, former Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL) who resigned from his post as RNC chairman in 2007 in response to his party’s anti-immigrant views.

Now hold on, according to me my anonymous sources inside the RNC, Chairman Steele is doing his damnedest to reach out to Hispanics. To prove it, get a load of these pics forwarded to me. They’re going to be used in new RNC ads.  Tell me what red-blooded Latino will be able to resist the urge to run down to the Voters Registration office to change his/her affiliation to R after seeing this…

It’s been said that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. While that may be a cheaper way of doing cardiac surgery under the Rethuglican health care reform non-plan, it’s also another strategery for grabbing Hispanic voters.

Along with food, music is another way of making inroads, and Miguel knows how to turn the beat around! He loves to hear percussion.

Of course, Miguel is not alone in his quest. He’s getting some help from his friends, like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, and Tom Tancredo. Even Independent my ass Lou Dobbs is pitching in!

To me, however, the reaching out really started at CPAC last February when Michelle Batshit Bachmann cheered Miguel with You be da hombre! You be da hombre!

Indo mais longe ainda, foi parar dos Estados Unidos e conviveu com grandes estrelas, como Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope e Fred Astaire, de quem ganhou um par de sapatos!

Foram anos de muito glamour, mas com a morte de Carmen Miranda, voltou ao Brasil.
Aqui perdeu bens e dinheiro. Após a morte da mulher e da filha em um acidente de carro, chegou a mendigar nas ruas e ganhou uma casa do músico Tom Jobim.

Bob perdeu a casa em uma enchente e, atualmente, é ajudado pelo cantor Roberto Carlos! “Cheguei aos 96 anos bonito, lúcidos e sou uma das pessoas mais felizes que habitam a Terra. Não tenho do que reclamar”, disse.

Nesta quinta-feira Bob esteve no Mais Você e fez uma bela apresentação de sapateado, como nos bons e velhos tempos! Ana Maria ficou impressionada com sua ótima forma!

Kate Has always worked in oil paints, producing a whole array of differing images, based upon various subject matter. In her latest exhibition, however, she has chosen to pay homage to some of the glamorous female icons of ‘The Dream Machine’, the golden age of Hollywood. Kate’s paintings, executed in black and white, portray the crisply evocative images of the thirties, forties and fifties. Each image stares out from its own imprisoning canvas, isolated in a static timeless nostalgia. Her subjects are pictured as a series of ’stills’. Faithful to an era in which cinematic special effects were still unknown, and which the main source of light was placed high up in front of the subject, her idealised portraits display faces in which the shadows of the skin texture are smoothed away, and facial contours are exaggerated. This gives them the dual quality of being Sirens, both goddess like and ghostly.

That Ken Ludwig. Man.

He can’t write a play without causing serious damage to the ankles. (That’s what my feet are saying, anyway. Ah, well, there’s a price to be paid for anything, huh?)

I’m sorry if this comes across, at first, like a shameless plug for the current production of Leading Ladies that I’m in – it wouldn’t matter anyway, if it did; we’re practically sold out for the rest of this run. We’ve only got one more week, and then…it’s curtains.

But, out of the goodness of my heart, and since I’m a Christian man (from the waist up, anyway), I’ll gladly give you the web address for Starkville Community Theatre. I’ll miss it, myself, to tell you the truth, but I won’t act like it.

No, it’ll be good to have my feet in a solid pair of loafers, again. (Never thought I’d ever say that). But, those heels are starting to chafe and my precious ankles, delicate though sturdy, are still in recovery, I should remind you. Well, my right ankle is. It never fully healed from the disastrous (highly embarrassing, AND alcohol-free, thank you very much) spill I took in my own front yard, as I catapulted myself over the vinca, back in May during the run of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged.

Yes, I’m referring to the infamous fall that nearly broke Amanda at the waist, with her key in hand and at the front door. She never saw me coming. Yes, dear friends, I mean the veritable somersault that “took out” the middle curlicues on the ironwork that holds up the porch awning, and was flung across the bistro table where a large glass vase sat, waiting all its life for this one moment to face death.

That one, yeah. I’m sure you remember.

The ankle still hurts, and now here I am, in another Ludwig “farce?”, running up and down stairs in 2″ heels. Black, fake leather, with an angry Mary Jane strap bridging the curve of bone across the top of my foot.

In short, my feet are killing me, each night.

(And secretly, I’m kind of OK with it). I said, kind of.

This is, I think, the very definition of true love. Because true love allows you to hate it. And I hate Theatre; therefore, I must love it. Don’t expect to understand that. It’s not a total hate; it’s a sectioned-off hate, and ironically, has less to do with Theatre, sometimes, than it does with Theatre’s Other Lovers. Jealousy is pumped through the air vents at our theatre. Trust me.

And calm down, calm down…I’m not about to bore you with some lengthy diatribe on the virtues of Theatre as the most genuine art form, or a life saver…both of which I consider it to be.  

I hope I spelled that right.

To be honest, I was going to initially write a love letter, here, to Theatre; then, I stopped and thought about it…long and hard. It might be better if I wrote it a Dear John letter, instead.

Much like true love, I stay in this constant state of stress about Theatre. I obsess over the come-and-go effect it has on me. We fight almost everyday.

I want to stay; I want to leave; you get the kids; I’ll take the costumes. You know how it goes…that kind of argument.

You wouldn’t believe the way Theatre treats me, either. It’s a textbook example of the classic abusive relationship. And we’re going on twenty years, this year. Can you believe that?  We first met in 1989, during The Sound of Music.

(No one could hear my cries over the chorus, though…plus, Maria was a strong soprano. I ended up chiding myself for being paranoid).

Now, twenty years later, I’m still in this relationship. (And before you ask, No. I haven’t been faithful. Hopefully, I get some credit for coming back, as often as I have).

Because I always come back.

No matter what happens, regardless of what I’ve been put through, or what names I’ve been called: the evil swamp monster; that fat, dying Southern aristocrat; a transsexual psychic; the manipulative bank clerk; a dancing bear; a blanket-hugging 5-year-old; a singing priest; that British fop; that drag queen swindler…it doesn’t matter: I still come back.

I still find myself, many a night, knocking on the door to be let in. To be loved again. To get one more chance.

That’s why my feet hurt: from real love. And this time, to prove how much love I have, how real it is…I’ve got to wear 2″ heels and five different dresses, every night, on the stage (I must say, the Carmen-Miranda-esque dress is quite a character, in and of itself). And I do all of this, proudly.

Because this is the penance I’ve sworn to, so that Theatre knows I “really mean it this time.”

But…just like last time, I’m already sick of it. I’m desperate to finish planning my escape. I’m eagerly trying to bide my time until this Saturday night, when I can smile a lot and bat my eyes during one last curtain call (Theatre loves when I do this; I’ve fetching lashes, I know…I can’t help that), and then we’ll hug, like last time, we’ll bow a few times to each other, randomly throw well-meant kisses at each other (but not really to each other), and then, I’ll walk out the door, full of promises, as usual.

God only knows how long I’ll hold out. My record is two months. I’m going to try to make it to Christ’s birthday, this time.

If I can. I always mean to stay away for longer than I ever do. That’s what any victim does. Intentions, though, can’t resist a curtain call anymore than they can take off 2″ heels merely by pretending them away.

This time, however, (this coming next time, I should say), I expect will be different.

Because it isn’t just me that’s changing, now. Theatre is, too. Lately, I’ve been having this sinking feeling that I don’t really know Theatre, anymore. The magic’s fading, for me. The fun isn’t there, hanging around. I think that’s one reason I kept coming back, even with all the “name-calling.” Because even on the worst of days, we still had great fun, Me & Theatre. We were a package deal, a power couple. I expected problems to come from that; they usually do.

But, they were our problems, when they came, Mine & Theatre’s. Not someone else’s. (That’s what seems to be changing. Sigh).

Whatever it is, I’m not sure…but Something’s not the same, I know because I smell it; it has a smell to it. You don’t run around on a stage in five different dresses, every night for two weeks, and not come across a wide range of smells. Febreze usually works, but not this time.

This time, it’s a smell I can’t quite fully recognize. And, I don’t like a smell I can’t recognize.

No sir, I do not.

I do not like a smell I cannot recognize.

No post anterior eu me referi a Caminho das Índias com o termo kitsch. Esse conceito é um dos mais interessantes da estética contemporânea. O texto da Profa. Christina Maria Pedrazza, apresentado na Intercom deste ano, oferece uma boa introdução:

Apesar de mais de um século de existência, a palavra kitsch ainda apresenta alguma confusão em seu significado, sendo muitas vezes interpretada como sinônimo de brega. Entende-se que uma coisa é brega quando está relacionada ao mau gosto. Este conceito não se estende necessariamente ao kitsch. Mesmo que muitos atribuam ao kitsch o conceito de mau gosto, nem sempre esse mau gosto é evidente aos olhos do consumidor ou do indivíduo que faz uso do kitsch, principalmente se o objeto for uma réplica do original. Um típico exemplo é uma reprodução de um pintor famoso vendida na loja de um museu ou mesmo em frente a ele. De certa forma, pode-se considerar um objeto kitsch se ele apresentar uma ou mais das seguintes características: 1) imitação (de uma obra de arte ou de um outro objeto); 2) exagero (na linguagem visual ou na linguagem verbal); 3) ocupação do espaço errado (um carrinho de pedreiro usado como jardineira em um canteiro de jardim); 4) perda da função original ( uma garrafa de vinho usada como castiçal).

Uma referência indispensável no assunto é o livro O Kitsch, de Abraham Moles.

Em todo caso, qualquer retrato de Carmen Miranda é bastante ilustrativo:

Mas o que motiva esse novo post, na verdade, é que o trecho de Claro, de Glauber Rocha, colado aqui no blog anteriormente, pode ser interpretado como uma ironia para com o enraizamento do kitsch na sociedade burguesa. Roma é a civilização na qual triunfou uma classe média possessiva e individualizada – pré-requisitos para os excessos, o “sempre mais”, a superlativa função do prazer e do conforto na arte (a despeito do “belo” e do “feio”) ou a inadequação dos objetos nos contextos em que são inseridos.

Lembrei-me também de um filme goiano – um dos melhores da produção recente. Em Descrição da Ilha da Saudade, a diretora Alyne Fratari põe uma galinha de porcelana sobre a geladeira vermelha, que, por sua vez, é objeto da intriga que determina a relação do jovem casal interpretado por Carlos Cipriano e Glauce Guima. Essa galinha é um detalhe que evidencia, no filme, a apropriação do kitsch numa chave crítica – a intenção, aqui, é ressaltar um estilo de vida que as personagens procuram realizar (o de uma sociedade de consumo), como um imperativo que concorre diretamente com a atração bela e pulsante dos dois amantes; o que termina sufocando a ambos.

O filme de Fratari será exibido na Mostra Brasil do Goiânia Mostra Curtas, mês que vem. A meu ver, ele deve ser assistido como uma referência para os cineastas daqui, pois consegue algo realmente raro de se ver no cinema goiano: um equilíbrio adequado entre os elementos fílmicos específicos, como o uso de trilha sonora ou a montagem coerente com a mise-en-scène, itens que geralmente condensam as intervenções excessivas dos nossos cineastas.

It wasn’t exactly Carnival time Friday night at the Hollywood Bowl, but the season’s Fireworks Finale program had all the rhythm, song and spirit of Brazil’s irrepressible Mardi Gras celebrations.

It began on a high note, with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Wilkins, performing a collection of works with various Brazilian connections.  Ary Baroso’s familiar “Aquarela Do Brasil” — perhaps the oldest Braziian song universally known in this country; a lovely medley of songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim, beautifully arranged by Dick Hazard; “Amazon Journey: by Matt Naughtin — long on atmosphere, less intriguing musically; and — apparently because it is a popular work in Brazil — John Barry’s theme from Somewhere In Time, an odd inclusion at best.

The first of the evening’s two Brazilian performers had a familiar name. Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Joao Gilberto, the bossa nova master, and singer Miucha Buarque.  But she has thoroughly established herself as a major star in her own right, and she paced the Bowl stage with the sort of diva confidence, spirited vocalizing and sensual dance moves that were rarely present in a previous performance at the venue in 1991.  She was especially appealing in an effervescent rendering of the Carmen Miranda classic, “Chica Chica Boom.”

Brazilian singer/songwriter/actor Seu Jorge has made the difficult trip from the favelas to high successes in music and film.  His dark, growly voice is a surprisingly pliable instrument, and his capacity to inject meaning into his musical phrases produces an emotional impact that transcends language.  One of the most intriguing entries in a program reaching from Braziian funk rhythms to lyrical balladry was his version of David Bowie’s “Life On Mars” from the album, The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions, a fascinating reinvention of the Bowie songbook.

But it remained — predictably — for the fireworks finale to ultimately steal the show.  Underscored by the HBO performing “A Carmen (Miranda) Fantasy,” the spectacular pyrotechnics soared into the sky as a colorful troupe of feathered and sequined dancers, accompanied by gyrating capoeira artists, paraded across the stage.  Then, as though all that wasn’t enough, Gilberto and Jorge returned for a delightful take on Gilberto Gil’s jaunty “Bananeira” — a perfect coda to an entertaining evening.

“Blame It On Rio” with Seu Jorge, Bebel Gilberto and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra continues at the Hollywood Bowl through Sunday, Sept. 13.
