Live: Opera Night at Vibrato Grill Jazz...etc.

An evening of opera at a jazz club? An unusual combination, it would seem. Yet, there it was Monday night: “Gala Opera Night” at Vibrato Grill Jazz…etc., featuring soprano Demetra George, baritone Ralph Cato and pianist/music director Frank Fetta. And why not? As the restaurant’s General Manager, Hoss Zargaran pointed out, Vibrato also includes the word “etc. – et cetera” in its title.

“Not that I would ever think of opera as et cetera,” he said, “but it does open the possibility for scheduling musical events that reach beyond jazz.”

As it did this entertaining evening. Although, as Fetta pointed out in his opening remarks, one could make a case for the fact that opera and jazz share common interests in dramatic pacing, rich harmonies and unique approaches to story telling.

The production, as such, was minimal. Fetta playing the piano, and George and Cato singing arias from Puccini, Verdi, Bizet and others, acting their roles by the sheer use of body language alone. But it was enough. Both singers are experienced musical artists – George a 2-time Grammy nominee, Cato the veteran of world tours with the show “Riverdance.” In addition to their impressive singing qualities, they brought atmospheric believability to each of the arias.

Understandably, most of the selections were classics, with the possible exception of the Vision fugitive from Massenet’s Herodiade, passionately rendered by Cato. Both singers made the most of their showcase pieces. George wove her way through the soaring demands of Sempre libera from La Traviata, the drama of Vissi d’arte from Tosca and the buoyant Czardas from Die Fledermaus. Blessed with a remarkable vocal instrument, singing with appropriate drama for each of her characters, George’s only problem was her employment of a vibrato so wide that it often ranged into the area of tremolo. And she’s too gifted a talent for her singing to be defined by a single, distracting characteristic.

In addition to Vision fugitive, Cato used his rich, strong sound and flowing phrasing to make most of the Toreador Song from Carmen and Alla vita che t’arride from Un Ballo in Maschera. But the highlight segments of the program were the singers’ impressively theatrical renderings of a pair of duets: La Traviata’s Act II duet between Giorgio and Violetta, and the Nedda and Silvio duet from Pagliacci.

Fetta’s accompaniment was both supportive and energetic, and his witty, often humorous introductions provided perspective and background for an intriguing presentation of classic operatic music.

After the program, Zargaran said that there would be more events at Vibrato displaying different genres of music. That would make a worthy addition to Music Director Pat Senatore’s already first rate jazz scheduling, and further establish the venue as a significant destination for fine music.

Fa uns anys vaig tindre la inmensa sort de conèixier una gran investigadora d’estats i/o migracions invisibles. Carmen ‘la granaina’ ens continua donant llum sobre aquestes lluites. La última ha estat Aminatou Haider. Als mitjans de comunicació s’està publicant molt sobre el tema. Però llegir a Carmen sobre la seua vivència amb aquesta dona encara posa més els pels de punta:

Hace año y medio tuve el placer inmenso de entrevistar a Aminettou Haidar en la sede de la asociacion de solidaridad con el pueblo saharaoui en Sevilla. Es la persona con más fuerza interior que me haya cruzado en mi vida. El hecho de que me contara como permanecio desaparecida durante cuatro años y como la torturaron sin descanso durante ese tiempo con una mirada absolutamente tranquila y sin odio, me hizo ver que me encontraba frente a alguien absolutamente excepcional. Siempre ha cabido la posibilidad de que la volvieran a detener, pero el saberlo esta noche me ha provocado una enorme conmocion.

Aminettou Haidar ha sido detenida hoy 13 de noviembre de 2009 , a las 12:30 horas por la policía marroquí en el aeropuerto de El Aaiún, capital del Territorio No Autónomo del Sáhara Occidental, al que llegó en vuelo regular procedente de Gran Canaria, acompañada por el periodista español Pedro Barbadillo, y el cámara Pedro Guillen.

Hasta el momento permanece en dependencias del aeropuerto separada de los periodistas que viajaron con ella, y no se sabe nada de cual será su destino.

Fuentes oficiales marroquíes han confirmado la detención.

Esta detención, se une las graves e injustificadas detenciones que el Gobierno de Marruecos viene efectuando contra los defensores pro derechos humanos saharauis, en una injustificada escalada de violencia hacia la población civil saharaui a la que pretende recluir en “guetos” impidiendo por la fuerza cualquier relación con juristas, con observadores, ni cualquier otra persona que no sea designada bajo los órdenes marroquíes, pretendiendo que permanezca en el silencio y el olvido la grave situación de vulneración de derechos humanos que vive la población civil saharaui en el Territorio No Autónomo del Sáhara Occidental

Para que vea el lector que no nos inventamos nada, y que no somos mas papistas que el Papa, aquí dejo enlazadas dos noticias que ponen de relieve la nefasta gestión de recursos militares que ha perpetrado Carmen Chacón en particular.

En primer lugar, el sentir de los militares que participaron en el “rescate” de los atuneros.

El momento más indignante es aquel en el que los tienen a tiro, y esperando órdenes sólo encuentran…el silencio. Lamentable. Chacón dimisión.

Muppets Make the Leap to Digital

A rash of the Muppets performing their rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody has infested the internets today, appealing to people nostalgic for The Muppet Show and Queen. I’m glad to report that this is not just a passing fad, the Bohemian Rhapsody video being but a string in the strong presence that the Muppets are carving for themselves in the digital realm. We’ll report more on this development after the jump, but first, the aforementioned cover:

Jim Henson created more than a trademark, developing puppetry into a national hallmark from the dregs that it had found itself, creating family-friendly television that appealed both to children and their handlers. Thankfully, despite his untimely passing, the bar he raised remains high and apparently in good hands, with this coming computer-addicted generation-to-be still capable of getting their hands on good, educational programming.

The Muppets have always married entertainment to education, and continue in this excellence by creating digital shorts that showcase classical works to a new audience in a timely, humorous fashion. Take for instance Beaker’s rendition of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Fourth Movement, commonly known as
Ode to Joy :

which demonstrates that the marketing department for the Henson Company are on their A-game. They’re keeping on top of trends and topics and are adapting their campaign to match not just what people are watching, but what they’re doing too.

Following that same theme, they came out with this video, introducing to many net surfers I am certain, Johann Strauss’ An der schönen blauen, known to the English-speaking world as Blue Danube, via Gonzo and his “Pitch Perfect Poultry”:

Furthermore, the Henson Company is foraying into public consciousness and seemingly attempting to fix other companies’ screw-ups with human culture. Remember MTV’s Carmen: A Hip Hopera? (The audio synch on this video is screwy, but this is probably the best part of the whole debacle, and that’s only because of Mos Def.)

Well, The Swedish Chef, Beaker, and Animal take a shot at making you forget it all about it (sorry to have brought it up again) by taking on Georges Bizet’s most famous aria, Habanera from the opera Carmen:

Now, in closing, I would like to point out the Muppet’s social commentary, which there is a strong history of as well. This is made even more prevalent at the tail-end of those videos, where Waldorf & Statler (the grumpy old men in the box) comment on the videos they have just “watched” via the internet. If you haven’t watched these videos through to the end, go back and finish the Muppet ones, I’ll wait.

So not only is the Henson Company utilizing the magnificent tool that is the internet, but they’re also mocking it, gratuitously and defiantly? These guys are the epitome of digital productivity, deserving kudos, accolades, and commendations all around. Not only do they see the future, they’re actively working to make it a brighter place.

SO guess what, after all those years drinking coke ( coca cola ) it finally paid off. I won a xbox360 + the game Lips ( lolz that suck!! ) .. so now i have my mac a pc ( got it working again ), PS3 and a xbox360.

Well i dont got it yet.. they should have sent it to me buy now but.. they stated that they sent it the 15 0f nov. and i still havent got any info about nothing SO scam !! but ye, i was thinking that.. well first i got to say that im going to by cod mw2 for it OFC as the pc Version is fucked and i kinda rage :O:O .. may buy the pc version if they fix it, there is a hack out already but ye. Pluss my pc sucks BALSS ! … i have to say i downloaded it and played through single player.. its short.. Y! i know downloaded !! well they havent posted a demo yet and i wanted to se if my pc could run it.. and im buying it for the xbox!!! it costs more for the xbox ! :O

I predict the two of them will be famous, but that Miss Trinidad and Tobago is flat-out beautiful. She will have an extensive career in front of the cameras, so do not be mad at her.

I give this one 15 stars out of 10, and the leaked tape speaks for itself.

It is being reported that the action was stolen off of her Miss Trinidad’s former boyfriend’s laptop, when he left it at a computer repair shop. That sounds to me like a lie, because we all know that most people delete their porn from their desktop before leaving it at a repair shop,….at least I do.

I am obviously joking here with all of this, but it is amazing to me that there are so many high-profile people out there that film themselves having illicit sex. Carrie Prejean claims that she just wanted to give her boyfriend a gift, and I have heard that before many times from young girls.

I know when I bring gifts to an intimate female companion, I better show up with some flowers and merchandise if I plan on coming back. A sex tape will not cut it for the women I know, …but it would be great for them to make one and give it to me.

I just would not be in it. Unfortunetly this does send out the wrong message to all the little girls out there that want to become celebrities. It seems as though that a ‘leaked’ sex tape is going to be mandatory for young lady to rise to fame and popularity in today’s culture.

The viral nature of just such an exhibition has worked wonders for many of todays starlets and that might be a double-edged sword.

I expect a lot of self righteous declarations of piousness to be espoused in reaction to this sexual exploitation in our culture, and I discourage any of my relatives to go down this path,so I do not have to be exposed to it.

But, the reality of it is, is that it is not illegal if the parties are of age and consenting adults, it’s just inadvisable.

I recommend a bit of discretion, but I do understand the pressure that we in Hollywood put on the female stars to stay relevant, and to be noticed.

If you are related to me, I suggest you make something eles for your boyfriend…

Proceed with caution….as I call to book my one way ticket to Trinidad and Tobago with a layover in Japan!!!

Not so good news and "Toxin Moments"

Hello friends,
By the title of my blog, yeah, I have some not so good news. I had a follow up appointment with my Kidney Doctor, my Dietitian, and Social Worker Friday, 11/13 and based on my latest labs… I’m not doing too well. The Dietitian scolded me for how low my Albumin is…this helps regulate my protein levels and helps fight off infections. So much protein comes out during my dialysis, I have to eat more to replace it. I have recently bought some of the protein bars and some unsalted nuts. In fact, I’ll put this on my wall so when people offer ‘is there anything you need, Carmen”- I can say, “yes, get me some protein bars”. There are specific brands I can have. I may get some powder protein stuff to create smoothies or whatever…

I have to say the highlight of the appointment was getting to see Frenchie! I miss her so much! The clinic was so swamped Friday, she had to come in to help. It was crazy!

I told the Dr about my “dizzy pill” and she had never heard of someone having those side effects from that particular medicine. Yeah, I told her that I am the exception. She smiled and said, “Carmen, we love that you are so special.” It cracked me up. She gave me another brand to try… so far, it has been working well… no dizziness.

I received my belts in the mail however, they sent me the wrong size. I called yesterday and had the pleasure of speaking with the owner again… once I told him my name, he said: “is this The Carmen”? It made me smile… He felt horrible and mailed out the new order immediately. I told him it was okay… just a few more days of tape and maybe blisters for me… I have made it this far…

Sad to report, I don’t have any fun dialysis adventures that occurred the past week.:(

I will share that I have an awesome chiropractor! Dr Brenda Beaty of Fulk Chiropractic in Olathe…she stopped in the middle of my treatment to pray for me. How awesome is that?! I am so blessed with having such awesome doctors in my life! Speaking of, my PCP loved the goodies and told me I didn’t have to do that.

My social worker is lobbying for me to join the patient committee for the National Kidney Foundation. Some friends of mine keep bugging me to be ‘the poster child” for people with kidney diseases-We’ll see what God has in store for me…

I do have to share with you shall I say “my toxin moments”? I had recently bought a new phone as you know, the day I met the transplant team, my phone kinda died. A couple weeks after having the phone, I got an earpiece to make driving, doing dialysis, and other hands on activities easier while I make use of these times to chat on the phone. Apparently, this little earpiece decided to jump out of the pocket of my jeans and into the street of where I park my car. The next day I went out to my car and found the trail of evidence of its death…eight pieces. I gathered them up, put them in a little Ziploc and would take them back to the att store to exchange it. As soon as I walk into the store, I am greeted with a very warm greeting from one of my new friends and potential donors. He shouts my name and throws his hands in the air, excited to see me. How cool is that? The other customers look to see “who this famous person is…?” I love it! I hand over my bag of pieces to him and he asked if it was the remains of my phone? Thank goodness, no. They are the remains of my earpiece. I begged to exchange it. I was only one day over 14 days. He called his supervisor and to my great disappointment, I could not exchange it.

Later on that week, of all days, “Friday the 13th”, I had another “toxin moment”. I locked my keys in my car. Yep. Not only did I lock them in, they were in the ignition with the key turned. I was on the phone with a friend, had parked and turned off my engine. Now, let me share where I was..out at Village West, “the legends”. Luckily, I have a friend that works out there so I called them up. He eagerly and graciously came out with a hanger. Since I have an older car, it was impossible to “break in.” He offered to take me home to get my spare key. Well, my garage door opener was in my car- the only way I could get into the house unless my folks were home. So, I called dad; no answer. I then call mom, she was heading home, however was only going to be home briefly. So by the time I would have gotten there, she probably would have been gone. My friend offered me to hang out at their store while a locksmith comes. After perusing through the yellow pages, I had one of those light bulb moments– i have roadside assistance, duh! I called Att customer service to get the Roadside Assistant’s number. I call RA and ask if locking the keys in my car was covered? Yes, it is. After asking several questions, I am put on hold to find out what company is going to assist me. The lady comes back on, thanks me for holding and says: “Ms Reinke, you’ll get a kick out of this– the company is called Stranded and they’ll be there less than 30 minutes.” That is quite funny! I wait a few minutes and mosey out to where my car is because they told me to stay with the vehicle. Um, I don’t feel comfortable being out in a parking lot by myself where people think I may be suspicious and up to something… I decide to sit on one of the benches out front. I see a car with a yellow light on top driving slowly. Once it got closer and turned the corner, I saw the advertisement-Stranded. I flagged him down and he followed me to my car. Within five minutes, I was in my car and on the road again. I just had to laugh at myself!

Here’s my final toxin moment- this took place the next night. Still keep in mind, it’s “Friday the 13th weekend”… I went to a fashion show with a couple girlfriends and decided to use the bathroom before we left. I had been to this venue before;however, couldn’t remember where the restrooms were on the lower level. We ask the bouncers and they pointed upstairs. We walk up a couple flights of stairs, find ourselves in the “VIP area”-we walk in as if we’re VIP and head straight past the models and other VIPS to the bathroom. There were a few models still gathering their items as the sink counters were full of stuff and also had puddles of water. I hate not being able to set my purse and other things down on a counter while I wash my hands. I stuck my purse between my knees and place my new phone on top of the soap dispenser. Now as you know, there is a flat surface on these dispensers. As I am washing my hands, my new phone can’t take it anymore and commits suicide right into the sink where there is running water. I let out some curse words as any person would do that just bought a new phone a couple weeks ago, especially one that is collecting unemployment benefits. My friend grabbed some toilet paper and handed it to me so I could dry it off right away. I take out the battery and SIM card to dry them off and to give the phone a break hoping it would come back to life. I am still cursing and then begin to pray. Probably should’ve prayed first. I am praying all the way home for my safety and for my phone to come back. Once I get home, I contemplate using a hair dryer; however, have second thoughts because my parents are asleep and I didn’t want to disturb them. Meanwhile, I need to do my dialysis and pray that no emergencies occur as I don’t have a phone to call the after hours number. I plugged in my home also hopeful that by charging it will somehow rejuvenate it. All throughout the night, i heard little noises as it struggled to fight for its life. Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep that night.

After church, I head straight to the Att store to pay my friends yet another visit. Thankfully, I had insurance and was going to get a brand new phone mailed to me. In the meantime, I was given a loaner for a couple days. I tell ya, once I got used to having a keyboard, it was challenging to go back to the old flip phone. I now have another new phone, its working just fine (to my knowledge) as I had not received a single phone call all day and evening…and I try very hard to always keep it in my pocket. Why I didn’t do that when I washed my hands, who knows….?

That is the latest and greatest this past week…

This is Carmen.

Her life was perfectly normal until a few months ago, when she was diagnosed with diabetes and a thyroid condition. Unfortunately, her owner could not afford her medication, and so Carmen “attacked” her and her son. And then they called 911.

There are a lot of snarky things that could be sad about this story, but mostly it makes me sad, because it’s eerily similar to what happened to my childhood cat, minus the actual diagnosis. Poor Carmen.

Carmen loves to take my digital camera around the house and take pictures of random stuff. Every once in a while, when I am going through and cleaning them out I find a few gems.

I guess Mose was her subject of the day because she got some really cute shots of him.

Pay no attention to the mess… I swear, it’s never like that. ahem.

But seriously, is he handsome or what?

He is getting so big. It is blowing my mind a little bit. He is now pulling up to stand… and then promptly slipping down whatever he is standing against and thumping his noggin. I can already tell he is going to have a permanent bruised forehead from now until three years old.

He now has 2 bottom teeth, and he is working on the third one, which is coming in on top. I am going to miss that gummy grin. It is so sad to see my baby start to disappear… yet so thrilling to see them accomplish new things on the journey to becoming their own people. Man, this parenting thing. Wild. I don’t think I’ll ever feel like I cuddled them enough, even if I did it ’round the clock.

Carmen is also amazing to me. The stuff she comes up with is always so surprising. She comes home with cute songs and sayings from preschool all the time. She is getting so smart, and can now count well into her 30s. Except, of course, for twenty-thirteen, and thirty-thirteen (in place of twenty-three and thirty-three). Still impressive though, and I can see where she would get confused.

I just love them. I am so happy I get to be their mom, and not someone else’s mom.

Cat Takes Family Hostage

Mother and son, Rosa Davila and Victor Marte are lucky to be alive after their 16lb Russian Blue cat Carmen went friggin ballistic. No seriously, this feline near on had enough with these two. Carmen decided to go for Victor first by launching herself unexpectedly onto him and scratching like a pussy possessed. Mother and son made a dash for it but Carmen was hissing at their heels.Victor made for the bedroom while Rosa tried to herd the beast into the bathroom. After several failed attempts Rosa sprinted to the bedroom too, slamming the door behind. The hapless two had no choice but to ring 911 while Carmen sat screeching outside the door. Twenty five minutes later police and rescuers rocked up expecting to see some friggin bobcat but instead came face to face with Carmen who was still very much pissed.The dramatic standoff ended with Carmen being unceremoniously corralled into her cat carrier. Rosa thinks her kitty’s bad behavior could be linked to a diabetic and thyroid condition diagnosed a few months back. Unable to afford the medication they just let Carmen eat her troubles away.

Psst Carmen will be placed up for adoption after she calms down.

Carmen – Throw Down

Fann den här låten för ett par månader sen men det är först idag som jag äntligen får ändan ur vagnen och tar med den på bloggen. Jag tycker introt är så sanslöst bra och dessutom är det en riktigt skön låt. Mycket 80-talskänsla i den, hela instrumenteringen lixom bara skriker 80-tal och dessutom så var det på 80-talet som det skapades såna underbara basgångar.

Kan meddela att mitt byte till Google Chrome är helt klart nu och det funkar kanonbra. Fattar bara inte varför jag inte bytt tidigare, det går ju så extremt mycket snabbare att ladda webbsidorna nu, speciellt när de är tunga och mastiga som typ Aftonbladet.
