Dream, That’s The Thing To Do

By Geoff Edwards, on November 24th, 2009

This blog will soon transfer to www.avidcruiser.com. Please log on and subscribe.

[This week, Avid Cruiser's Geoff Edwards reports from the new Carnival Dream.]

Carnival’s Dream is at Pier 90 in NYC scheduled to depart at 4 p.m.

I took the red eye on AA from LAX to Dallas and then on to La Guardia. I know not to get in town the day of the sailing, and for a minute I thought I should have listened to myself. Our flight leaving Dallas was an hour and a half late leaving the gate. Some problem with the temperature aboard and for awhile we weren’t sure we’d go at all.

I am alone on this trip as my photographer wife, Michael, broke her leg taking the perfect shot from a folding chair. Well, at least the chair did what it was supposed to do. It folded.

It seems that everyone that inquires about her injury has an “I broke” story. It’s the same with DFW. Tell someone, anyone, you had a delay or cancellation at DFW and the horror stories pour out. I’m coming back through St Louis.

I reserved a car through Carmel Limo and was picked up 5 minutes after my bags arrived. Get this: Luxury sedan for $28 plus tip. That’s less than a taxi.

The drive to Manhattan goes through some low income areas, and given the clouds and chill, a dreary ride indeed. Once in town the traffic was horrendous. A siren screamed at the cabs and trucks, but no one paid much heed. The large fire truck looming in rearview mirrors and the blasting horn finally got some attention, but not a lot. Ah, New York.

The tourist venues on the piers were a captivating sight from the ship: a nuclear sub, an aircraft carrier . . .

. . . and the final landing place of the “we’ll get there before you leave” airplane.

This is Carnival’s newest and largest ship. At 130,000 tons, she holds more than 3,646 passengers. We have 3,600 aboard for this cruise. As with the larger ships, check in can take some time. Just zone out — it will all be over soon.

My cabin is lovely and, huge props to Carnival, there is actually light in the spacious closets. The bathroom, (I’m sorry, head) is no frills, but the towels are large and absorbent. What you need is want you get.

Dream’s lifeboat drill is a departure from the usual, which is when you wear your lifejacket to the muster station, and then someone shows you how to put it on. But I have it on. Oh, never mind.

On Dream, we go to our muster stations sans lifejackets and are shown how to put on what we don’t have. The poor cruise director was having a tough time getting folks out of the lido buffet line to gather at muster stations. My muster is in the deck three theater.

Everywhere you go on Dream there is music and dancing.

There is not a spot on the boat that doesn’t have something happening.

Michael and I had reserved a table for two, but with her cancellation, I ended up with a table for ten, all of whom were traveling alone. The man next to me refused to talk.

The man across from me refused to stop talking. The food however, made up for any discomfort. I had an incredible Indian vegetarian dinner, and all the others seemed to be happy with their choices. I don’t know about the man next to me.

As we sailed down the Hudson, the Statue of Liberty was elegant in the evening haze. Because of the lighting, the rain, the ship’s movement, and my camera, the photo is lame, but here she is.

I was as fuzzy as she, and choose a soft pillow and duvet over the welcoming show.

Patrick Swayze will live on in the hearts of millions of moviegoers as ghastly New York City night d

Patrick Swayze will live on in the hearts of millions of moviegoers as ghastly New York City night demon, Sam Wheat…and, of course, no one is likely to forget John “fidgety hips” Castle any time soon. However, with Swayze’s recent passing comes the inevitability of his secondary roles fading slowly into obscurity…and with this, we’re faced with the very real possibility of future generations growing up without the guidance of his most important film credit, James Dalton.

Dalton deficiency in a boy’s development will spark the devolution of man.

Without Road House, you lose the immortal words “pain don’t hurt”…and without this declaration, humanity loses it’s strength. Our species will become frail and weak. We will eventually be conquered by creatures inferior by today’s standards. A century from now it’s a distinct possibility our surviving civilization will succumb to a herd of guinea pigs.

The question begging to be answered is: Who’s going to put the “MAN” back in the future of “mankind”?

Along comes Scotty. He’s coolheaded and evenhanded, but he means business. His experience transcends taking out the trash at a seedy roadside bar…he does his dirty work on the savage fairgrounds. No man’s land. On top of that, he too has a degree in philosophy, only his was printed out on carnival tickets and inked with the blood of all those who’ve dared cut in line at the merry-go-round.

In Scotty, we have not only the successor to James Dalton, but perhaps…

…the savior of the human race.

Photo by Pedro Kirilos/Riotur By VICTORIA GOMELSKY, from The New York Times Rio is expected t

By VICTORIA GOMELSKY, from The New York Times

Rio is expected to attract billions in public and private investment over the next few years.

RIO DE JANEIRO — On Alexandra Daly’s most recent visit here in May, she was booked into a hotel across the street from the most happening stretch of Ipanema beach. The perk, however, proved irrelevant. Ms. Daly had not bothered to pack a bikini.

“I had nine meetings in one day,” said Ms. Daly, a hedge fund marketer, whose London-based company, AA Advisors, works with about 35 major Brazilian investors. “I don’t even have days like that in New York. When you’re talking about Rio, people think of samba, Sugar Loaf mountain and the beach — not the billion-dollar investment industry.”

The conventional view of Brazil’s two largest cities is that São Paulo, with its banks, commerce and industry, got the brains, while Rio, with miles of crescent-shaped beaches, Carnival revelers and picturesque bay, got the looks. But the truth is that the “Marvelous City,” as Rio is known, is increasingly a serious destination for business travelers.

Brazil’s growing standing among global financiers is one explanation. Poised to become the world’s fifth-largest economy by 2016, the country has emerged from recession virtually unscathed, earning the envy of its Group of 20 cohorts.

São Paulo is the center of the boom. But Rio brings plenty of opportunities to the table, not only with its core oil and natural gas businesses, but also in financial services, technology and telecommunications.

An August 2009 study, “Decision: Rio Investments 2010-2012,” published by the Rio de Janeiro State Federation of Industries, predicted that public and private investment would pump $60.3 billion into the state over the next three years, not counting the additional $14.2 billion budgeted for the 2016 Olympic Games.

“I would dare to say that, probably, we have the biggest concentration of billion dollars in investment per square kilometer in the world,” said Cristiano Prado, the author of the industry federation’s study. “And more will come together with the Olympic Games in the next years.”

Not since 1808, when the Portuguese monarchy sailed into Guanabara Bay, fleeing Lisbon ahead of Napoleon’s army, has Rio seen such a spectacular influx of wealth. And not since 1960, when Rio ceded its capital status to Brasília, setting off an exodus of businesses and a half-century of urban decline, have Cariocas, as Rio’s residents are called, had a reason to believe the wealth would return.

“There is hope that with a government that is more pro-business, more things will happen in Rio,” said Ronaldo Veirano, founding partner of Veirano Advogados, a Rio-based law firm that worked on the federation’s study. “Hotel chains are now thinking seriously about their capacity and authorities are investing in infrastructure. I don’t think Rio will ever be another São Paulo but I think it could recover some of its glamour.”

The most conspicuous hurdle is an epic crime problem that has branded Rio one of the world’s most dangerous cities. On Oct. 17, for example, drug-trafficking gangs inside a favela, or slum, shot down a police helicopter in a series of clashes that left three police officers and at least 23 others dead.

Government leaders are eager to project a different image to the business community. “Clearly, the model we have is Barcelona,” said Felipe Góes, Mayor Eduardo Paes’s secretary of development.

Like the Spanish city, which cleaned up in time to be host for the 1992 Olympics, Rio hopes to reinvent itself for the Games. Presiding over the transformation is the billionaire Eike Batista, a mining magnate whose EBX Group has interests in real estate, energy, oil and tourism.

One of Batista’s pet projects is the deluxe restoration of the venerable Hotel Gloria, a 1920s landmark five minutes from the city center, where two of the largest corporate players in Brazil, Petrobras and Vale, still have their headquarters. The opening of the refurbished hotel is planned for 2011.

Other hoteliers have taken notice. Rio’s grandest property, the 86-year-old Copacabana Palace, introduced its sleek new Bar do Copa in March.

Meanwhile, the two-year-old Hotel Fasano in Ipanema boasts the stylish Baretto-Londra Bar designed by Philippe Starck.

Another newcomer is the year-old Hotel Santa Teresa, set in an acre of gardens in the artsy, hilltop enclave of the same name, just 10 minutes from downtown but far away in atmosphere.

“The advantage is we have only 44 rooms, 4,000 square meters and 150 tropical trees on the property,” the general manager, Mark Birchall, said. “You feel almost as if you’re in the mountains.”

In general, Rio’s accommodation capacity, currently 28,000 hotel rooms, is expanding at the rate of 1,000 rooms a year, said Paulo Senise, executive director of the Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“The idea is to increase that to 1,500 to 2,000 per year for a total addition of 14,000 hotel rooms by the Olympics,” Mr. Senise said.

Overcoming its reputation as a parochial party town looks to be Rio’s biggest challenge domestically. In São Paulo, the locals, known as Paulistas, have long derided Rio for its supposed lack of sophistication. Many recent visitors, however, insist that Rio offers plenty of fashionable dining and nightlife options, from the baroque antiquarian bars and clubs of Lapa, near downtown, to the posh beach cafes of Ipanema, Leblon, and Barra da Tijuca.

“In terms of service, you are not lacking in Rio at all,” said Ted Rogers, a Washington-based venture capitalist who has done business in Rio since 2006 and blogs about it at www.vc-brazil.com. “I’d argue that the way the city is laid out, you have easier access to the places you want to go than in São Paulo.”

International access is set to improve Dec. 15, when US Airways begins direct service to Rio from its hub in Charlotte, North Carolina, the largest banking headquarters in the United States after New York City.

For all its current mojo, however, Rio faces one inescapable deterrent to sober-suited business development. Riotur, the government-owned tourist office, spells it out in its colorful introductory guide: “It is very difficult for anyone who visits Rio to resist the appeal of its 86 kilometers of beaches.”

That is more than 50 miles of beaches.

Mr. Rogers, for one, doesn’t even try. He said his best business days began with a run on the beach, followed by a quick swim. The routine, he said, puts him “in a relaxed but energized mind-set.”

“It’s hard to stress about business when on the beach in Rio,” he said, as he planned a return trip to the city at the end of October. “And by the end of the weekend, it is equally hard not to feel rejuvenated.”

This is where I dream in front of the computer these days. My NaNoWriMo novel has taken me to breathtaking places.

But this is the reason I’ve been a bit quiet. Just plugging along. I just broke 36,000 words today. I feel like I was really streaking along there for a bit, but I kind of got gummed up the past few days working out plot tangles. It’s been worth the slow-down though. The antagonist, a very seductive Venetian man, has removed his mask and revealed his true self to me, which has, in turn, changed the whole feeling of the book for me, making it just a shade darker. Me likey.

So I’ve been busy enjoying my characters’ travels. I’m even dreaming of murky green canals and handcarved teahouses. I’m determined to finish this book before the end of the month. I am a woman obsessed!

So off I go!

So give Smile readers the gift of sharing, sharing a family photograph. It can be a gift given or received, it can be the gift of talent, it can be the gift of having the photograph itself. The interpretation of gift is yours. Admission is free with every photograph! Here is mine…..

My daughter is expecting my first grandchild anytime. We are all so excited. MacKenzie is growing everyday, and Marcy is really “feeling” it. We cannot wait until her arrival. I want to share my first picture of my first grandchild with you. It is amazing the technology they have now. When my kids were born, not THAT long ago, the ultrasounds were so hard to dicipher. Now you can see the babies smiling, waving and almost dancing around. I introduce to you, MacKenzie Jordan Cox, due anytime. This is during her first trimester.

Bleedin’ good game with huge amounts of gore. L4D2 is packed with a great campaign that you can play with up to 4 of your friends online. Took me about three days to complete on normal with me and my friend, and two bots. After we completed it, we went back and had fun doing some steam achievements. This game can never get boring with the multiplayer Versus and the new Scavenge gamemode. Both gamemodes also include lots of steam achievements that are challenging and fun, and usually contain good tactics too.
Had great fun getting the extra achievements and playing the minigames in the Dark Carnival.

Here’s some images I got from the dark carnival campaign, the last picture is just for the lol’s.

Tay is on fire with “You You You”. We are seeing more and more of side “H” for hot! This masterpiece of near musical perfection is like a gift so near the holidays. The song starts in signature Tay Zonday style then transitions to a faster, deeper, sometimes echoing musing on love, want, desire, and longing. Barry White is gone but if Tay wished he could have overwhelmed us with a firestorm of guttural growls. Instead, he purposely emits a warm steady fire that slowly touches without burning.

The background for the video set the right tone for it’s fast pace. Hearing the song first you expect a scene similar to “Cherry Chocolate Rain”. Instead, we are left with imagery harkening to an outdoor concert. Not closed off at all but visuals full of freedom and expression.

1. A Celebration

2. A Reunion

3. A Parade

My 500th blog post. I was going to put a photo up to mark the occasion, but don’t seem to be able to do anything with the design. I never looked before. The Man took Son 1 aged 5y 1m to School. Son 2 aged 2y 2m and I unloaded the dishwasher, put some washing on, tidied up – he got a sticker for putting his toys away, sat on the bed reading and cuddled and tickled. A Wednesday Friend was waiting in for deliveries, so I put Son 2 in the Big Pram and off we pushed. We stopped at the Baker’s Shop and I bought a sourdough loaf for the Mummies’ lunch… and some flapjacks the size of housebricks for everyone’s pudding. Son 2 saw the flapjacks. “I wan’ fap jak. I wan’ fap jak.” I put them under the Pram. A shriek, and a plastic horse was thrown on the floor with force. We stopped at the Newsagent’s to sort out the paper bill, and then I began the slow, hot task of pushing the Big Pram up the mighty hill from The Town to Wednesday Mum’s house. I’ve been pushing that pram up that hill for four years now, and today was the hardest yet. Clearly Son 2 is getting heavier. Because I can’t have lost that much fitness, can I?

Booming Business Wednesday Mother was back from her Business Trip to South Africa. She opened the door, Son 2 sprang through. “Great hair,” she said. I looked at his fine, tousled blond head and wondered what she meant. Only when the other Mother said “it’s fantastic, takes years off you” did I realise she’d been talking about me. The Business Trip had been very successful and she was pleased. She only got back last night after 24 hours of travelling. Son 2 clung, but soon went upstairs with the other two boys, both aged 3. We gossiped. Our hostess went to check on the boys. She came back down. “Son 2 is standing on top of the bunk bed. I didn’t know if you wanted him up there.” No I did not. I went upstairs into the children’s bedroom. I persuaded Son 2 to come down, and sat playing with him and the other two. Then the marble construction game came out. Lots of ramps, tunnels and tubes. And many many marbles. Son 2, like his brother, is a compulsive mouther. I could not leave him in a room full of chokeables, much as I wanted to sit, drink coffee and chat with the others. The boys eventually drifted downstairs and stuffed their faces with soup and flapjacks.

There was a carnival in the Big Town this evening, so after picking Son 1 up from school we parked, shopped, and joined in. The Big Town was packed. Both boys were shattered, bored with the waiting around, but determined not to miss a thing. Son 2 sat in his buggy, his eyes drooping, yet again and again he yanked his head up. We left before the end - The Big Town’s four roads in and out aren’t Big enough for tens of thousands of people to leave at the same time – and heard, but didn’t see, the short, loud burst of fireworks marking the finale. “Bang,” said Son 2. All the way home. Without nodding off once.

Ponchatoula man charged with running Ponzi scheme
By Jen DeGregorio, nola.com
November 19, 2009, 6:10PM

A Ponchatoula man has been arrested for running a Ponzi scheme in which he bilked at least 200 investors out of more than $11 million and allegedly used the money to pay for Mardi Gras krewe memberships and plastic surgery, among other personal expenses.

William J. Chaucer Jr. was booked in the Tangipahoa Parish Prison on charges of felony theft, selling unregistered securities, making material misrepresentations in the sale of securities and operating as an unregistered securities dealer, according to Attorney General Buddy Caldwell’s office, which investigated the case with the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office. Chaucer’s bond has not been set.

william_chaucer.jpgRoger Zettler, The Advocate/The Associated PressWilliam and Cheryl Chaucer were photographed in September 2008 at a banquet celebrating her selection as Miss Louisiana Senior America at Carter Plantation in Springfield, La.

Chaucer was the principal of several financial companies, according to Caldwell’s office: Chaucer Holding Company, Chaucer Financial Services, American Credit of Hammond, American Credit of Covington and City Credit of Ponchatoula. The companies closed in September.

A Ponzi scheme works by juggling money among a stream of investors, using cash from new clients to create the appearance of profits on existing accounts. In Chaucer’s case, clients were told that their money was being invested in one of his loan companies. Individual investments ranged from $10,000 to $417,000, according to Caldwell’s office.

But Chaucer was actually using the cash to bankroll an extravagant lifestyle. Caldwell’s office said Chaucer spent $400,000 on Mardi Gras krewe memberships and krewe-related expenses for his family, $5,500 in plastic surgery and $11,800 in cosmetic dental work for Cheryl Chaucer, who competed in beauty pageants. Chaucer also allegedly spent $5,558 for tickets and ads to the Senior America Inc. pageant, along with $14,275.74 in photos, $20,905.74 in jewelry and “thousands more dollars” on expenses related to his wife’s pageant career.

A telephone listed in the name of William Chaucer at an address in Ponchatoula has been disconnected. Donald Hyatt, listed with the attorney general’s office as an attorney for Chaucer, did not return several telephone calls seeking comment.

The Web site for Senior America Inc. lists Cheryl Chaucer as “Ms. Louisiana Senior America 2008.” A biography on the site describes her as a talented singer who has performed with the likes of Fats Domino, Pete Fountain and the Neville Brothers. Cheryl Chaucer is also credited with serving on the boards and committees of a variety of major New Orleans institutions, including the New Orleans Opera Association, New Orleans City Ballet and Audubon Zoo. The Web site also describes the Chaucers as members of five Mardi Gras organizations. Cheryl Chaucer has reigned as Queen of Mercury, according to the site.

She and her husband were scheduled to reign together as King and Queen of Excalibur in 2011, but the couple resigned from those posts in August citing “business problems,” said Diane Brown, captain of the Metairie parading organization.

Chaucer is not the first Louisianan charged with running a Ponzi scheme. In August, former Metairie resident Judith Zabalaoui received an eight-year prison sentence for operating a Ponzi scheme that stole $5 million from clients in the New Orleans area.

About 1,700 Louisianans may have lost a combined $500 million in investments with R. Allen Stanford, the Texas financier who has been charged with stealing $7 billion in an international Ponzi scheme. Stanford has pleaded innocent of the charge.

One of the most picturesque cultural icons of the Santeño’s tradition, are the Diablos de los

One of the most picturesque cultural icons of the Santeño’s tradition, are the Diablos de los Espejos (Mirror Devils). They are most commonly found in the Provinces of Los Santos and Herrera in the Peninsula of Azuero.

According to a book edited by Dale A. Olson and Daniel E. Sheehy dubbed, “The Garland Handbook of Latin American Music – Second Edition”, the Mirror Devils were used to instruct the uneducated population about religious matters. This is what they wrote about this iconic Panamanian folkloric character:

“During the colonial period, liturgical dramas in spoken verse were common in Latin America. They instructed the illiterate population in the wonders and mysteries of biblical narratives.

In Panama, the Mirror Devils (Diablos de los Espejos) and Big Devils (Gran Diablo) respectively from Garachiné and Chorrera, portray variants of the Christian theme of the eternal battle between good and evil. Musicians accompany the Mirror Devils as they enact the defeat of the devil by the Holy Spirit.”

The devil dances have their origin in European masquerades. Especially after the plague, the macabre and the devil were themes for many celebrations. In the case of the devil dances in Panama, they all serve a religious purpose: the evangelization of the devil. So these diabolic creatures came to be a vivid image of the battle between good and evil that promoted conversion. Most of the devil dances are usually practiced for the religious feast of Corpus Christi, that celebrates the presence of Jesus in the host. These practices are colonial, but there are no dates that we can specify as to when or where they started. Most probably very early in the 16th. century.

In this dance, there is a variation in which the demons carry mirrors that according to local superstitions, are to reflect or to ward off the evil eye (mal de ojo). This is also a carnival dance that mocks the King of the festivities. los Diablos de los Espejos is a dance that was rescued and reintegrated once again into the carnival celebrations.

The Diablos de los Espejos from the Peninsula of Azuero are dressed with bright-colored clothes with hanging mirrors from the garments. The origin of the dance is European but has definitely acquired African elements. The black population that practices this is not the typical Caribbean West Indian, but is what has been called Afro-colonial which defines the black population that came under the Spanish colonial system as slaves, many years before the West Indians came to build the Panama Canal. They practice their picturesque dances during carnivals and the dance includes an interesting episode where the devil is baptized.

During the Santeño’s parade at Juan Díaz I was able to photograph several of these traditional icons of the Panamanian folklore. It was the first time I was able to get very close to them. I even had the opportunity to exchange a few words with one of them who was extremely well-mannered and courteous. I was fascinated with their exotic costumes and their graceful movements of feet and hips which evoked the Spanish and African cultural mixture, as well as the aspects of the masks resembling ugliness and fear.

This is what I saw on November 10th at Juan Díaz. Here we go. (Please click on the images to enlarge them and appreciate them better.)

This part of the parade was the most spectacular and full of movements and colors. I would say it was the most awe-inspiring section of the parade. But there is still another surprise which will knock your socks off. If you want to know more, please stay tuned to tomorrow’s post. You will be glad you did. As the day progressed, the event got better and better. Good Day.
