2001: the traitorous activities of FBI man Robert Hanssen are about to come to end after 22 years of betraying his country. Eric O’Neill is assigned to be his assistant in a new department as they attempt to catch Hanssen in the act so that he can be arrested and prosecuted.

8/10

Conspiracy thriller that remains entirely compelling throughout and features an outstanding performance from Chris Cooper as the biggest traitor in US history. Laura Linney is also terrific but Ryan Phillippe is not in the same league. His big scenes feel the teensiest bit forced but it doesn’t undermine the movie. What does nearly undermine the movie is a scene where Chris Cooper’s car is disassembled and has to be quickly put back together. It’s far too reminiscent of the awesome gag in Police Squad (Testimony of Evil) where a massive American car is disassembled and hurriedly reassembled as a compact. Overall, it doesn’t matter as Cooper is so, so good that he makes it work and, with his star, co-writer / director Billy Ray (Shattered Glass) has made a high quality, beautifully-paced movie.

This movie contains a single sexual swear word, adult dialogue and violence and brief sex scene on videotape.

…but it’s been GREAT rewatching the series! I bought it for my girlfriend and am now reaping the benefits from that (selfish) gift.

You should watch Wonderfalls. Because I say so. It’s about a 24-year-old who moves out of her house to live in a trailer home. Her family is wacky, and entertaining. Then, inanimate objects start talking to her and telling her to do things. It’s also a Bryan Fuller show. He brought you other way rad shows such as Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me. See! It’s totally worth it.

Thanks for cancelling it, FOX. You bastards.

This is a list I have been meaning to make for a while. Presenting Six Reasons Why Canada Rocks! (Plus Three Honorable Mentions)

Sarah Chalke (Ottawa, Ontario) – From playing second Becky in “Roseanne” to second fiddle behind JD and Turk’s bromance in “Scrubs,” Ms. Chalke has always held her own against giant personalities and crazy sitcom-uations. She has a way of pulling off clumsy and sexy in one fell swoop.

Evangeline Lilly (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) – I’d like to believe she’s possibly one of the best actresses on this list. Aside from her Live Links ad, all I have to judge her skills on is “Lost.” Her character, Kate, is damaged yet strong, worried yet brave, a dreamer yet a realist. And Evie sells it - hook, line, and underground bunker.

Elisha Cuthbert (Calgary, Alberta) – Where in the world has Elisha been? Since “24,” a minor role in “Old School,” and “The Girl Next Door” (which was awesome BTW), she’s been in schlock like “House of Wax,” “The Quiet,” and “Captivity.” She returns for Season 7 of “24.” Hopefully better roles will follow. (BONUS: check out her appearance on “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!“)

Erica Durance (Calgary, Alberta) - Possibly the girl next door to Elisha over in Calgary (I’m imagining Erica was her babysitter), Erica came to my attention when she began her role as Lois Lane in “Smallville.” Smart, tough, and a looker enough to make Superman forget his childhood sweetheart (see below). All I know is she can be my Kryptonite any time she likes. (Also, she makes a more believable Lois than Kate Bosworth did in “Superman Returns.” Sorry, Kate!)

Caroline Dhavernas (Montreal, Quebec) – Caroline is definitely the dark horse on this list, and that’s mostly because of one thing – not many people know who she is. Though most of her work is in French Canadian film, I began to appreciate Caroline (pronounced Caro-lean) for her role as Jaye in the underviewed and wonderful, “Wonderfalls” (another of Bryan Fuller’s cancelled projects, along with “Pushing Daisies” and “Dead Like Me”). She was also in the American films “Breach” and “Hollywoodland,” but I’ve yet to see those movies.

Rachel McAdams (London, Ontario) – I fell for Rachel not in “Mean Girls,” not in “Hot Chick,” but in “The Notebook.” Damn that movie. One night playing goal in my soccer game, I threw out my back and made the mistake (or divine choice) of putting “The Notebook” in my DVD player before I passed out. The next day I awakened to realize I couldn’t move, and no one could help me until way later that day, so I was stuck watching “The Notebook” back-to-back-to-back (Ow, my back!) Looking forward to seeing her in Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” with Robert Downey, Jr!

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Kristin Kreuk (Vancouver, British Columbia) – From Lana Lang in “Smallville” to Chun-Li in the upcoming “Street Fighter” movie, she’s a small-town cutie that grew into a big city cutie.

* * *

Viime aikoina olen saanut täydet pisteet kaikissa historian minikokeissa, jee. Ai että kiinnostaa kovasti?! KIVA!

* * *

Kersantilla on mahdollisuus palata sotaan väärällä nimellä voidakseen suojella kiinnostuksensa kohteen veljeä.

No, kersantin päätöstä ei tarvitse kauan miettiä. Sodan tuoksinassa yleisö aprikoi, kumpi olisi kauheampaa Dhavernasin roolihenkilölle: ainoan perheenjäsenen kuolema vai rakastetun kuolema, koska jompikumpi on vääjäämätön. (Kyllä tuo kysymys koukuttaa ainakin minut leffan maailmaan.) Siinä siis valmistelu.
KOHTAUS: tappamista ja kuolemista! Myrsky! Mutaa ja verta (hyvin Henry V :mäistä)! Pikkuveli kaatuu.

* * *

[EDIT: Hurraa Do iiitttt! Doooo iiitttttt! ]

Mulla on sarjaa ikävä jo nyt.

* * *

Liikaa surunaamoja. Vaihdetaanpa aihetta…

Mahtava ilta.

THERE’S A PLANE CHASE!

I thought I had little hope of even catching a glimpse of it, since the show was axed by Fox and was only watchable through DVD (Region 1 DVDs!!). It’s unfair. It’s short lived with only one season, it’s relatively unknown, why did I bother? It’s because I was wildly curious about a certain tall actor with pleasantly soothing voice and substantial eyebrows called Lee Pace, after seeing him in trailers for The Fall and Soldier’s Girl in good old YouTube. At that time I didn’t know about Pushing Daisies.

Quick facts

A 2004 show, Bryan Fuller creates it, Caroline Dhavernas plays the lead with other brilliant casts including Lee Pace. Although cut short, it developed a rather loyal fan base. Imdb page here. A campaign to save Wonderfalls here.

What?

Well, I heard good things about Wonderfalls and started my research. It didn’t have any ground-breaking premise like Heroes! Dexter! Desperate Housewives! (don’t get me wrong I love those shows). The idea of having figurines talking to you as a central idea of a TV show itself is odd. The heroine, Jaye, is a disgruntled overeducated underemployed retailer in a tourist shop and there seemed to be nothing special.

I’m glad I bothered.

It was still a weird show, but with good, fun, quirky writing and acting, after the initial joy of finding the stuff online, I was quickly pulled in! After episode 2, I was intrigued. I can’t pinpoint why I like it. The seemingly mundane lives of the characters and an interesting show coming out of it? Jaye’s intriguing mindset? Unexpected twists and wit? I’m only up to episode 2 so I can’t say a lot more about it, other than that I’m gonna watch more.

Where to watch?

Here. (not complete yet but I am hopeful)

More tidbits

Australian Channel 9 did air this show (but I’m sure I wasn’t in Australia yet at that time), but as expected it pretty much disappeared into oblivion.

This comes from the creator of Pushing Daisies! I haven’t even watched Pushing Daisies as Channel 9 has been bragging about it being their best! Show! In! 2008! And it’s near the end and people are sick of waiting and still no free-to-air Pushing Daisies. How sad.

Apparently there are a lot of elements from Wonderfalls to be embedded in Pushing Daisies in season 2. according to some articles I read online! A deserving tribute to a show cut short. Lee Pace already took centre stage in Daisies but more stuff from this show is welcome.

Out Cold, which looks like it would be nothing more than a spectacular series of snowboarding stunts

Out Cold, which looks like it would be nothing more than a spectacular series of snowboarding stunts, is actually a homage to Casablanca set on a rustic Alaskan ski slope called Bull Mountain. Rick (Jason London from Dazed and Confused), who hopes to run Bull Mountain, can’t forget about Anna, the French girl he romanced while vacationing in Mexico. When a ruthless developer (Lee Majors, star of The Six Million Dollar Man) wants to turn the rough-and-tumble site into a sleek, tourist-friendly resort named Snownook, Rick discovers that Anna is the developer’s daughter. Will he be seduced to the dark side by love and ambition? Alongside scenes “borrowed” from Casablanca, there’s an abundance of high jinks with Rick’s slacker snow buddies, cute girls (including Playmate of the Year Victoria Silvstedt), and some pretty amazing snowboarding sequences. Dumb but good-natured fun, and Majors clearly enjoys himself as the bad guy. –Bret Fetzer

This wild comedy is an intoxicating mix of mountain-high hilarity and radical winter sports action! For snowboarders Rick (Jason London — DAZED AND CONFUSED), Luke (Zach Galifianakis — BUBBLE BOY), and their buddies, life at the Bull Mountain ski area is about partying hard, looking for girls, and doing anything for a good time! But when the town’s founder dies, his son decides to sell the mountain to a sleazy developer (Lee Majors — TV’s SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN) who’s intent on turning Bull Mountain into a slick yuppie ski resort! Featuring outrageous stunts by real-life snowboarding champions like Todd Richards, Rio Tahara, Tara Dakides, Devun Walsh, and Rob “Sluggo” Boyce — and a red-hot soundtrack — it’s an avalanche of laughs as the guys do whatever it takes to save their mountain.

La Belle Bête (2006), or The Beautiful Beast, is a French Canadian movie directed by Karim Hussain.

La Belle Bête (2006), or The Beautiful Beast, is a French Canadian movie directed by Karim Hussain. It’s a tense family story with overtones of psychodrama, existentialism and chamber drama. It revolves around mother, Louise (Carole Laure), the son Patrice (Marc-André Grondin) and daughter Isabelle-Marie (Caroline Dhavernas). They live at the family farm in the country side, a huge place that looks like an old colonial estate complete with pillars and a fountain. The husband/father has died in a tragic accident which seems to have for ever ruined the family dynamic and broken something in Louise. She now showers her son with affection, something that seems a little off right from the beginning, and dislikes the daughter. There are brilliant little glimpses of the cruelty of the state of affairs right at the beginning when mother Louise tells her daughter that she is ugly when she laughs.

The story is based on a novel by Marie-Claire Blais, who was quite young at the time of writing, and there is something of the angry, overly-obvious teenager about the story. It isn’t subtle. Isabelle-Marie is, to my mind, the main character. She sees her family’s defects and tries to do something about them in her half-fauve way. Her reasoning is somewhat flawed and Dickensian, but then again that matches the whole situation. Patrice is described several times as being an animal, which I think should be interpreted in this particular situation as being without the power of reasoning and acting on need and want. The aging mother, Louise, seems to be mainly self-involved and afraid of losing her physical attributes. Isabelle-Marie navigates a difficult terrain between clarity of thought and cruelty.

From a cinematic point of view we are treated to a variety of shot styles, partly stagy fixed shots framing the actors in an almost painterly style and shaky hand-held camera for the more nervy scenes. As for psychology, it is pretty heavy handed which means if you’re not in the mood for that kind of thing it would be easy to dismiss as obvious and affected. It is a pretty typical underground movie and it is easy to assume it would do well at smaller film festivals.

Messed up families, incest, psychodrama and not so subtle symbolic action is what you get. For example, the beautiful Louise lives on her hyper-feminine grace and as the movie progresses that starts to decay. Literally. We are treated to the image of her at her vanity table, inspecting her own mirrored reflection and where as that starts as a pretty pleasant exorcise it becomes obvious that that is somehow the root of all her problems, something the author/director can’t help making over obvious by having her develop a facial sore that will not heal.

By and large the movie is well-worth watching despite it being a bit actorly and hyperbolic. The reason I draw the parallel to Dickens is because the character of Louise reminds me of Miss Havisham, especially her unfortunate end. And Isabelle-Marie and Patrice are largely under her power during the whole movie, despite trying to break away, or having to accept the circumstance.

I have one of those curious minds that like to pierce the veil so I generally like watching the “making of” specials and listening to the directors commentary and disturb the whole illusion of the movie as a coherent universe. I like all the behind the scenes stuff. Mostly. I will give a warning here, though – don’t use the directors commentary option on this one if you get it on DVD. It is drivel. I tried and had to turn it off because it felt too much like having a hyper-caffeinated fast-talking sales pitch overlaying the sound track. Sometimes it adds to the movie having actors, directors and art department talking about what they have created and sometimes it doesn’t. This is one of the times when it doesn’t.

I’ll toss up some supreme actresses for this edition of Poor Man’s casting. Unless you are a student of Brilliant but cancelled television or French film, you probably have zero idea who Caroline Dhavernas is. Go to your dvd rental queue now and add Wonderfalls or Breach. Thank me later.

Caroline Dhavernas for Kate Winslet

Emotionally gripping, subtly funny, what accent do you need?

Here we have two immensely talented ladies who can take on any world accent believably. It’s a shame that more roles aren’t written for them. It seems like most actresses roles are either slapstick humor or Oscar- level, damaged drama.

It’s quite possible it’s my mistake as to why Caroline Dhavernas is not on every American casting speed dial. Maybe she’s more selective about her work. If I’m reading between the border lines correctly, she’s a French Canadian superstar. But we’ve stolen plenty of Canadian imports before, what’s one more? I’ll say it right now- Pushing Daisies, PLEASE find a way to guest cast her. Please oh please oh please.

Course Kate Winslet is flawless acting wise. My personal favorite role was in Finding Neverland.

Poor Man pt 1; Poor Man pt 2
