d
Billiard tables have been manufactured since the early 1800s and have even been mentioned in some works of Shakespeare. The billiard table is part of English and American culture and has been shared and embraced by many people around the world. Old billiard tables are still being used not only to play games but also as priceless works of art. Many of these old billiard tables are antique billiard tables.

There are different kinds of antique billiard table designs. Some of them vary in their dimensions, depending on the specific type of billiard game they are for. The different types of antique billiard tables include carom billiard tables, snooker tables, pocket billiard tables and tables without pockets.

Antique billiard tables may have intricate details and use some of the best types of wood. Some of the wood may age and appreciate in quality as the years go by. Some wood on old billiard tables change color over time, tending to become deeper and richer.

Some antique billiard tables have French style pockets with tassels to give the table more character. Details include carvings in various styles such as Corinthian designs, French designs, English designs and others. Some even have metal trimmings to add more definition.

The legs of various antique billiard tables usually have a distinct look compared to the conventional type used in modern times. Antique billiard tables usually stand on four legs that are artistically shaped and detailed. They come in different varieties and styles.

The price of an antique billiard table usually depends on the condition and age of the table. Sometimes applying furniture cleaner to the wood of the billiard table can actually depreciate its value. If there\’s damage on the billiard table, the value also depreciates. But if the antique billiard table is still in good condition despite its age, it will earn a high price in an auction.

Hey, its Sunday today and I decided to clean my store room; that also preserves my precious board games. And there beneath all the games was my Carrom Board. One of my favorite games. However, with the busy schedule and variety of games available today, I had completely forgotten it. Many like me would have done the same. That’s the reason I thought of writing something about Carrom and refresh the memories.

Playing Carrom

Carrom is a classic game played all over the world especially in Asia and Far East. This game has been given various names: Indian Finger Billiards, Carom, Carroms, Carrum, Karum, Carum and table billiards.

For Playing Carrom you need a Carrom board, the size could be of your choice ( Mini carrom boards are also available for children), Carrom men – a set of nineteen light discs – nine white, nine black and one red (referred to as the Queen) and a Striker.

Carrom is usually played in teams with 2-4 players. The opponent sits in the opposite direction. 3 players can play carrom game against each other for points. The game is played on a square, wooden board with four corner pockets. The goal is to collect points by sinking your nine pieces, and the “queen” in red, in the pockets before your opponent. The game begins by flicking the striker at the target pieces.

Here are simple rules and tips of Carrom:

1. Arrange the carrom discs with the red “queen” in the middle and the whites should be lined up to form a “Y” around the “queen” and blacks to replace the empty spaces around the “queen” and the whites.

Setting Carrom Discs

2. Each player is allowed to only strike from that side where he sits.

3. The contestant holding white plays first or a toss of a coin can also decide who plays first.

4. Your continue to play as long as you keep sinking your pieces – luck shots count and all combinations are permitted.

5. The red queen can be pocketed at any time after sinking your first piece but must be sunk before your last one. After winning the queen, you need to sink one of your pieces, thereby ‘covering’ it, into any pocket in the next shot, or she is returned to the center spot.

6. Once the queen is covered, whoever clears their pieces first wins the carrom board game.

Tips:

Strikers

To be sure that you are playing accurately and the striker is really on line, try to touch the striker with your fingernail.

The striker may not touch the pieces in diagonal arrow line. (This rule only applicable in India)

If you sink the striker, you will be penalized a turn and another green piece will be added to the board.

If in a single shot you sink more than 1 green piece, you will be rewarded with an extra turn.

Do not sink any red pieces. If you sink a red piece, you will lose a turn, even if you sank a green piece in the same shot.

For the web lovers online carrom game is also available on the net. A free version of carrom called Couronne has been developed by MiniClip. The board is the same as a carrom board, but the pieces are green and the striker is yellow. The objective is to sink all of the green pieces to move up in the levels.

If you are also a carrom lover and have some additional information and tips to share please mail me I would be glad to add.

Every Sunday night / Monday morning The Jumbotron will present you with “Slow Motion Not So Instant Replay” to provide general NHL information and hilarity from the week, so that you can stave off as much work as possible on a Monday.

Although, this week we have Columbus Day, so do people have to go to work? I don’t have a job, so I have no idea. All I know about Columbus Day is that Old Navy doesn’t give a shit about what holiday it is because EVERY FUCKING THING IS ON SALE. No, really, the commercial starts with “Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, but who cares, because cargo pants are on sale!” I tried to find a link, but stop being lazy and watch your own goddamn television. To the links!

Continuing down the who-gives-a-shit-about-Columbus road, here are some things Christopher Columbus would be shocked to discover. [Stanley Cup of Chowder]

I’ve known Gabe for some time now, but the Chowder really puts him in a nice, neat, accurately wrapped package. [Stanley Cup of Chodwer, again! Also check out the terrible sports tattoos piece in that delicious Link Chowder.]

Sticking with dumping on Columbus, Michael Peca is suspended indefinitely for physical abuse of a ref. I’m surprised there is no video of the altercation. Peca claims he grabbed the ref’s arm so he could slow him down for a chat. By chat, I mean obscenity laced tirade. I’m pretty sure Peca was just trying to ask him what the fuck a Pascal Leclaire is.[ESPN]

Columbus Blue Jackets superstar Jared Boll was hoping Krys Barch would go down like Pocahontas, easy – but full of pain and disease. Yeah, About that…at least he wasn’t Zach Bogosian. [Puck Daddy]

Who wants a David Krejci jersey? Well, too bad Gabe, they don’t have them. You could always customize one, but Mike Chen thinks its a pretty bad idea. [Kuklas Korner]

Blake Wheeler scored his first NHL goal (Milan who?), while Michael Ryder surprised everyone by accepting a pass from Marc Savard and promptly depositing the puck in the net. Claude Julien reportedly reacted by saying: “Who’s a good Ryder? Who’s a good Ryder? Yes, you’re a good Ryder. Yes, you are! Have a million dollars! I love you so much! Have another year on your contract! Who’s a good Ryder…” while Peter Chiarelli took his wrists away from the skate sharpener. [Hub Hockey]

How long does it take for a knee to heal? Less than fifteen years. Phew. Charles Wang got worried there for a second. Thank god Garth Snow can play at any moment; he took good care of his knees. Are Garth Snow jokes old yet? I sure hope not. Rick “Captain America” DiPietro may or may not be hurt, it’s possible he just really, really likes Joey MacDonald. [Barry Melrose Rocks]

Speaking of Barry Melrose Rocks, I wish I wrote it so I wouldn’t have to link to it so much, but I can’t rob you of air sharks. [Barry Melrose Rocks]

Air Sharks should clearly be the third jersey for San Jose. Sadly, that idiotic family from Orange County Choppers was consulted and there is going to a third world country wearing a lot of the unsold San Jose alternate jerseys. [Icethetics]

Martin Havlat jokes kill me. Not sure why, but they’re always funny. Growing pains in the windy city. [Melt Your Face Off]

Dustin Penner is not funny. This is barely even a prank. Thank the lord Puck That Hit has some sense. Sadly, you get the Saw doll for that post, instead of the normal smoking-hot barely dressed women, but I’m not one to tell you what to masturbate to (that’s my job -G).
I’d never heard of Rick Rypien before today, but anyone who punches people in the face this hard is a friend of mine. Well, a friend in the sense that I’d never want him to punch me in the face. Even though Brandon Prust gets his ass kicked, I feel like I don’t want him punching me in the face either, but I’m not friends with losers. [Hockey Dump]

Nemmy over at The 2 Man Advantage took a lot of time to put a skate on a silhouette of a naked chick in MS paint. Validate him. Oh, there’s also an article or something, but they don’t have permalinks, much like Rick DiPietro’s knees . [The 2 Man Advantage]

Bly from ThePensBlog, has a great photoshop with Sarah Palin and our favorite under-sized over-paid center.
Not hockey related, but such mastery of Ebonics must be passed along. [With Leather]

Three things you can find on your own because I don’t give a shit about them:
1. Sarah Palin dropping the puck at the Philadelphia Flyers game. It’s not real a face-off, they aren’t even wearing helmets!
2. What has seven arms and sucks? Def Leppard. I wasn’t going to watch it on television, why would I take the time to watch them be absolute fucksticks on the internet.
3. The new “Hockey Night in Canada” theme song “Canadian Gold”. I’d never heard the old song, so it’s all the same to me.

Never one to end on a negative note, enjoy one of my favorite NHL commercials:

Fuck Mats.

L’amour de l’étymologie is a feature exploring the etymology of English words. Today’s entry is caro

L’amour de l’étymologie is a feature exploring the etymology of English words. Today’s entry is carom, also sometimes spelled carrom. Visit this link to hear the folks at Merriam-Webster pronounce it. Lord knows why the OED only uses the international phonetic alphabet. Some people are auditory learners. (…or lazy types like me who haven’t bothered to learn the IPA.)

The first recorded use of the word was by Charles Jones in 1775 in the book Hoyle’s Games improved. An abbreviation of carambole, a noun meaning the red ball used in a game of billiards, it has since developed a distinct meaning. Carom can act as a noun, and refers to a shot in billiards when the cue ball hits two balls in succession. (Need to visualize? Check out this video of Semih Sayginer showing off his caroming skills/knowledge of trajectory angles.)

Carom also has a more generalized meaning when used as an intransitive verb. To carom is to “strike or glance and rebound”. So, flat stones can carom across the surface of a pond when thrown properly. It can also be employed figuratively: Bernard Wolfe wrote in Limbo ‘90 that a “phrase caromed through his mind.” Carom is used figuratively chiefly in the good old US of A.
