I have, surprisingly, become a slightly depressed, quirky version of Carrie Bradshaw.

• I write about my life
• I love buying clothes, accessories, shoes
• I have my own complicated relationship with my Mr. Big
• I have 3 best friends to confide in

Shit is:

1. I don’t live in NY… but I am planning on moving to London
2. I am not successful
3. I’m not that hot

In fact, it’s those 3 little things that I lack in my life. The 3 things I most want to have… the only necessary bits to make my life a good life. I really need to work to get my Carrie status.

NO MOTIVATION AT ALL!

I often wonder how people survived in the past without a cell phone. It is such a necessity in daily life. With a cell phone, you are so easily accessible to the world and I think it has made us unbelievably impatient.

I was watching an old Seinfeld episode called The Movie. Jerry’s plans get all mixed up because he couldn’t make his spot at the comedy club, so he has to go to the movie theater to let the gang know that he can’t make the movie. Before Jerry gets there, the movie gets sold out so they have to go to another movie theater, so George, Elaine, and Kramer separate and a chain of events assues. Here is the first part of the episode. The link to the other 2 parts are on the side.

NEVER would have happened if they had a cell phone.

Another example. Sex and the City. Carrie turns 35. She shows up at the restaurant. No one is there. Hours later, she gives up and goes home. When she gets home, there are messages on her machine. So and so is late. There’s another restaurant with a similar name. Traffic is insane.

NEVER would have happened without a cell phone.

Of course, these are fiction. But it happens all the time, or at least, it used to. Now, if someone’s late, you pick up your cell phone, call them, and see where they are. Because of cell phones, no one would bother to wait hours to see if someone will show up or not. You will know within minutes if you will be stood up. It’s brutal.

I lost my cell phone less than 24 hours ago. It hasn’t been insufferable. I’m getting a replacement phone this Friday. I don’t necessarily feel unconnected. With the internet at my fingertips, it’s hard to feel unconnected. I can access my phone numbers online, so I can call people on my home phone if I need to.

I think tomorrow will be a different story. I will spend the majority of my time at my aunt’s house and not having a cell phone will be a bit difficult. It will just have to happen.

I was able to have breakfast with my friend Jia before she left for California! Even without a cell phone, I was able to get ahold of her. It was amazing to catch up with her. I hadn’t seen her in over a year, so it was nice to catch up. She’s definitely one of those friends who don’t have to know every single detail about each other’s lives, but when we get together, we talk about it, and it’s like we never spent 1.5 years apart.

“Sex and the City” fez muito sucesso como coluna, livro, seriado e filme, certo? E você achou que essa fonte ia secar rápido assim?

Além do novo longa, que sai em maio de 2010, vem aí mais um livro com a personagem Carrie Bradshaw, que na TV e no cinema é interpretada por Sarah Jessica Parker.

A escritora Candace Bushnell vai lançar os diários da protagonista da trama quando adolescente. Sim, “The Carrie Diaries” será uma série de livros voltada para o público dos jovens adultos e o primeiro volume narra, claro, o primeiro amor da protagonista, a sua relação com a mãe e como ela descobre que tem talento para escrever.

A nova obra está programada para sair em 27 de abril do ano que vem nos EUA, um mês antes da estréia nos cinemas da continuação do filme. Ainda não se sabe se este livro será lançado no Brasil, mas eu aposto que sim, pois ele entrará naquela história do filme que promove o livro que promove o filme…

A capa, como dá para notar, é inspirada nas bolsas da coleção de Marc Jacobs para a Louis Vuitton (veja).

“everyone is so untrue…”

Well, not everyone. There’s another line in this song where Billy muses about introspection: “but when I want sincerity, tell me where else can I turn?” Obviously, Mr. Joel never had a good girlfriend (or three). It’s kind of sad, when you think about it, that some men (or even some women) never have the kind of friendship that’s a hallmark of being a girl. (This is also, I imagine, why there are some people who never appreciated Sex and the City. Sure, it was about male/female relationships, sex, dating…but at the heart of it, it was about the relationships between four women.)

I spent this past weekend with two of my good girlfriends, so it’s not hard to imagine we ran the entire gamut of emotions in the course of our relationship conversations. Emma & I met about a year ago. We grew up in the same small town, went to the same high school, worked for the same company; somehow, though, we never met until I transferred in to UCB (a semester behind her). Now we’re thick as thieves, and we spent the weekend in “enemy territory” to watch the Big Game between Cal & Stanford. (Go Bears!) This was our first sleepover, and true to form, we stayed up late into both nights talking. Though I often see her twice a week for an hour or two at a time, we had much catching up to do. She has a non-boyfriend halfway across the country (who, were he here, wouldn’t be so “non-”) that I wasn’t up to date on. Having been single for more than a year now, I have many tales of my own (current guy stories, and LOTS of the scary ex stories…she hadn’t even heard the famous engagement ring story, which most know is easily my favorite!)

You can’t imagine the things girls talk about, unless you are one. Some guys think they know girl talk, some guys want to know what’s said…the fact of the matter is, I don’t believe any guy will ever really understand it. And don’t get me wrong – I have guy friends I can talk to. For example, I have a guy friend who knows more about me than not just some girlfriends, but some exes. I’m all about sharing with close friends, regardless of their gender – isn’t that the point? But as a reformed mean girl, I definitely appreciate the value of close girlfriends and being able to tell them anything. We analyze/obsess/interpret together. We are (like Stephanie Klein) “straight up and dirty,” and that’s the best part. If you have the kind of relationship that allows you to be your true self with anyone, you should count your blessings. No one does real like girlfriends.

After 48 hours of good food, coffee, music, football & school spirit kept afloat by a nonstop girl-talk marathon, Emma & I were headed home. We were mid-Lush (my fave!) when Dolores called. She’s the kind of friend I feel like I’ve known for decades, rather than just years. We have much in common, and where we differ, we’re each as good at explaining our side of the fence as we are at seeing it from the other’s point of view. We met in an unusual way – we were dating twin brothers – and long after my split (now among the darkest of the ex horror stories I told Emma about), we’ve remained quite close. She’s a long-distance friend, and though it’s only about an hour & a half (one way), it’s tough. With my work/school/homework/social life and her work/kids/boyfriend, finding time to get together is a challenge. She’s been having a tough time with her boyfriend lately, and since I know him quite well, she calls me often about it. She easily forgets her own strength, and calls me to talk her through it. I don’t mind, because she’s been there for me when the shoe was (in a sense) on the other foot, and neither of us is actually drawing strength from the other, but being reminded of what we’re really capable on our own. It’s an unusual bond. When she called Sunday afternoon, it was to say that she was at the end of her rope (she’s just asked her boyfriend to come pick up his stuff and leave his key) and wanted to come spend the night at my place. By the time I made it home, she’d killed nearly an hour at Target waiting on me and was ready for tequila.

A pitcher of margaritas and much shared Mexican food later, we decided on commiserating with Carrie and the girls of Sex and the City. Dolores said she wanted to know what had led to the many breakups of Big and Carrie, so those were the episodes we chose to watch. Brian, her boyfriend, had been texting her all day. Afraid to “engage” him, she’d been determined not to respond. (Besides – his texts were along the lines of “whatcha doin?” Not what a girl who wants her boyfriend to take some action is looking for.) Eventually, though, she caved against her own willpower to respond and tell him she had no interest in being a casual text for him. He does have other girls for that, which is one of their problems. He has no idea what it means to be in an adult relationship, and she’s tired of carrying them (and doesn’t have the desire to teach him). Unfortunately, responding to his text did lead to a full-blown conversation (yes, via text message), just as she’d hoped to avoid. This is a problem for them – she gets to a point where she feels she can’t go on, he promises her the moon and the stars, and she gives in because she loves him and wants for it to work. This has happened a time or two in the past, so she knows it best to avoid letting history repeat itself. She has reached the point where she needs “a little less talk and a lot more action.” Problem is, neither of us is confident that Brian can do more than talk the talk. It’s heartbreaking to watch a friend go through this, because all I can do is be there for her and talk her through it.

At one point in the night, we were both sitting on my bed, texting guys (communication in the technology age…so strange). She and Brian were continuing their frustrating conversational loop while I was texting a…friend. (I hesitated for a second. We’ve established that there’s a “mutual crush,” but currently friend is the correct word.) Of course, this opens the door for possibility in the future, but the problem with choosing to stay single for any length of time is it allows you time and perspective to decide what you will & won’t bend on, where you’ll break. I think I’ve got pretty high standards, and maybe they’re “impossible,” but if they are, then I’ll take my chances alone. I know a lot of girls who stay in relationships far too long because they fear the unknown or being alone. I do not subscribe to these fears. I am perfectly capable of surviving alone. And while it’s true I want to find a relationship that makes me happy, it’s also true I refuse to settle. I wasn’t raised to depend on anyone but me, and that’s both a weakness and a strength. This puts me in an interesting situation – my last breakup (with Brian’s twin, Brad) was brutal, although I managed to get over the heartbreak quickly. It was the first time in a long time I’d let my guard down, and he didn’t just betray my trust, he obliterated it. I’m not afraid to take a leap of faith in trusting a new person, but I think from here on out, relationships are going to be conscious choices. I’ve never gotten to know a person the correct way, as a friend, and then made a choice to take a relationship further. I believe this is why I’ve looked back and said “what did I ever even see in him?” More often than not, we get into relationships without really considering much. I suppose it’s romantic to just jump right in, but it’s not romantic to feel like a fool when it all blows up and you wonder why you didn’t think about the fact that you and he had nothing in common. Maybe it’s easier said than done, but I want to get to know a person the right way first, and then if I feel like there’s something there and I still want to be with him, then I will. It’s hard enough to take new relationships slowly, but all those amazing feelings that come with starting a new one shouldn’t be cause enough to throw caution (and reason!) to the wind. I don’t want to get carried away in the excitement and butterflies of new beginnings only to look back and wonder how much I even knew about him before I “boyfriended” him. I want to fully get to know someone as a friend, as a person (yes, with possibilities) and see how truly compatible we are before I move on. When I broke up with Brad, I told my therapist I thought I had a great “bullshit detector.” It’s true I’ve broken up with several relationships because I felt a sense early on that it wasn’t going to be what I was looking for. “(It’s why I “saw the light” two weeks after eloping with a childhood sweetheart, filed for divorce after mere months, and insist vehemently that it “doesn’t count” as having been married). Once or twice I’ve looked back and wondered if I hadn’t thrown in the towel too soon. Tim (my former therapist) made a good point – maybe I have a good bullshit detector. Maybe I don’t. Maybe I’d have a great one if I took more time really getting to know a man first. Obviously, I’ve really taken this to heart. I want to know all the relationship history, the family stuff, the idiosyncrasies…the real man, before I even think about getting involved. And as if that isn’t too much work to put into the beginning of what might become a relationship…I also don’t want to learn all of this at mach speed. I prefer organic. I’m in no hurry. That might be frustrating (to me and a guy), but I don’t care. It’s self-preservation – maybe of an innovative and unusual nature, but…so? This is why I’ve been single all this time – I had a few things I wanted to make clear to myself.

So now…here I am in a potentially precarious situation. Now that we’ve established an interest, it’s hard to return to that comfortable friendly feeling of possibility and getting to know each other without giving a guy the wrong idea – it’s not so much “put on the brakes” or “back off” as it is “keep your foot off the gas.” I don’t want to discourage, but I want to look before I leap. These are the kinds of things I tell my girlfriends. See, part of the magic is that in telling a friend things like this, you’re just reminding yourself who you are, why certain things matter to you, and to stick to your guns. In the moments between learning the history of Emma’s new relationship and offering my shoulder to Dolores, we chatted about the tightrope I’m trying to walk. Both of them think that I’m being smart by not jumping into anything (with this guy or anyone), because both know me well enough to know I think I’m far too old for flings. (If I wanted a fling, I’d have just shopped among the Cal alums at the game…plenty to choose from!) I’m a serial monogamist, and though my relationship with myself is currently the most important to me, it isn’t my goal to be single forever. Thankfully, though, while I am…I have my girlfriends, and they’re each worth their weight in diamonds.

Veckan som gått har varit full av aktiviteter (hence no blogging). Höjdpunkten var dock lördagens middag hos åklagaren & fågelskådaren.

Som alltid när åklagaren & fågelskådaren vill ha med oss att göra blir jag (glatt) överraskad.

Första gången de bjöd oss läste jag fel på inbjudan. Så vi missade deras bröllop.

Andra gången vi var där kräktes 3-åringen ner HELA deras sovrum. Överkast, prydnadskuddar, matta – the whole lot var täckt i ett ljusrosa kladd.

Tredje gången kissade hon ner deras soffa.

Denna gång hade de förberett sig väl. Inbjudan (per sms och email) hade följts upp av ett personligt samtal, Oxford-soffan var täckt av en filt, och de hade införskaffat en extra madrass som bara happened to be within 30 seconds reach när bebisen skulle läggas. (De hade till och med gått så långt att de täckt över matsalsstolarna.)

Maken är omåttligt förtjust i åklagaren & fågelskådaren. Framförallt åklagaren (som han på oklara grunder hoppas möta in court one day).

Första gången maken (då potentiell make) bjöd ut mig, var det till ett Sex and City party.

Han skulle vara Mr Big. Jag valde vad jag trodde var ett säkert kort – Carrie – och var dagen till ära iklädd minimal Versace och skyhöga Manolos.

I should have known better.

Efter en första runda Cosmopolitans blev Carrie i vanlig ordning dumpad. Men denna gång för Charlotte (åklagaren).

Sedan gick en tid av cold war / permafrost.

Ända till Mr Big erbjöd Carrie 1 kilo smågodis samt ett par valfria Jimmy Choos att inhandlas på Madison Avenue i New York.

Carrie sa JA (och Charlotte likaså – fast till fågelskådaren).

Gestern Abend gings heiß her am Nollendorfplatz:  Körpernah, einer der führenden Dessousanbieter präsentierte im Goya seine aktuellen Kollektionen. Ob blond, rot oder brünett, superschlank oder üppig, die Kollektion zeigte wie Frau ihre Rundungen und Reize am Besten zur Geltung bringen kann.  Süß und verspielt oder sexy und verrucht, mit Federn oder Peitsche, es war mit Sicherheit für jeden ein passendes Dessous dabei . Zwischen den einzelnen Kollektions-Walks las die Synchronstimme von Carrie Bradshaw aus Sex and the City Passagen aus einem, naja sagen wir mal “Buch für Erwachsene” vor.

Okay, I’m guessing the adolescent Carrie wasn’t a geek or the prom queen. But a Queen Bee? Maybe. And definitely editor of the school paper. What do you think?

Even though Sex and the City 2 is set to release in theaters May 28, 2010, Sex and the City fans won’t be waiting so long for something about the ‘Sex’-related. Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell is deciding to publish a new book called The Carrie Diaries that takes place during Carrie Bradshaw’s high school days.

It will talk about Carrie’s first love, relationship with her mother and how she became a writer.

It will release April 27, 2010. We hope one is written for all the girls!!

E tô adorando. É tipo minha segunda pele, usei todos os dias desde que ele ficou pronto, na sexta-feira.

Quando eu era pequena meus pais me deram uma pulseirinha de ouro toda fofa com uma plaquinha com meu nome gravado. É claro que depois que eu e meu braço crescemos, nunca mais consegui usar.

Depois de anos frustrada com isso, vi no colar da Carrie, do Sex and the City, a inspiração que eu precisava. No entanto, nunca achava um lugar próprio pra mandar fazer um. Cheguei a encontrar um colar igual ao da Carrie na loja da HBO em Nova York, mas, let’s face it, meu nome não é Carrie.

Foi num dia de andanças pela Galeria Ouro Fino que dei de cara com a Cohn e a obsessão começou. Dez dias depois e r$ 170 mais pobre, aqui estou eu feliz da vida com o meu novo colar. E não, não parece uma coleira.

J’enfonce une porte ouverte, mais on a tous voulu au moins une fois quelque chose que les stars/célébrités avaient. Ça ne sert à rien de nier, c’est arrivé à tout le monde. Alors aujourd’hui, je vais en faire une petite liste, la liste de tout ce que font/ont les stars et que l’on rêverait de faire/avoir.

On a, en vrac (oui, c’est assez difficile de classer…) :

• L’alcoolisme naturel de Uffie et Alison Mosshart. En les voyant boire et se défoncer sur scène, on a tous voulu pouvoir faire pareil au moins une fois dans notre vie. Monter sur scène, hurler et chanter, boire, fumer, boire encore, vomir ; et que tout cela soit cautionné par le responsable de la salle, et que en plus, on ne paye rien de tout ça, et que MÊME, on soit payé pour ça! Le pied non ?

• L’attitude provoc’ de Lady GaGa ou de Rihanna pendant ses lives. Là aussi, qui n’a jamais rêvé d’oser quelque chose comme ça ? Oser le body et les cuissardes lacées, ou oser le latex avec des clous, et les cuissardes assorties ? Les cheveux aussi. C’est bien connu, on est jamais content de sa touffe. Alors que la personne qui n’a jamais eu envie de changer de coupe au gré de ses envies (comme GaGa ou Rihanna qui en changent comme de cuissardes) se dénonce right now!

• La hypitude de Cory Kennedy. Repérée par Mark Hunter, plus connu sous le nom de CobraSnake, Cory est devenue du jour au lendemain LA fille à avoir dans son réseau. Lycéenne banale, elle est devenue la coqueluche de la mode, adepte des soirées hypes & toujours au premier rang des shows de créateurs. On a tous eu envie, enfant, que notre vie change radicalement ; en bien, évidemment. Et Cory a eu cette chance (le revers de la médaille sera discuté dans un autre article, je pense). Dans le même style, mais en plus élégant, on trouve Kate! Miss Moss, millionnaire dès ses 20 ans, grâce à son job de top qui dure depuis près de 15 ans (!). Ascension professionnelle fulgurante, glamour, paillettes, le rêve de pas mal de gens.
• Les dons de Lily Allen ou Angelina Jolie. Lily et Angelina ont quand même UN point commun (malgré leurs différences de poids, de taille, de famille et toussa-toussa.) : elles ont un don. Lily fait de la musique par elle même, elle compose et écrit la majorité de ses pistes et Angelina joue sans doute mieux que les 95% des actrices du moment. On veut tous avoir un don pour pouvoir percer comme elles.

• Carrie Bradshaw, sa garde robe, ou plutôt son dressing. OUI, le point qui réunit toutes les foules, LE DRESSING DE CARRIE. Qu’on soit un homme ou une femme, tout être humain normalement constitué a besoin de fringues belles, hypes, classieuses, qui en imposent. Et pour ça, il en faut beaucoup, tout comme Carrie! (Et on peut aussi souhaiter, comme elle et Anna Wintour, avoir un ami gay. Mais ça, je peux gérer.)

A perfect weekend with good friends! Hanna came visit this weekend and Saturday we went with Linna to Gothenburg.
Hanna wanted to go shopping! Since it’s much cheaper here in Sweden then in Norway, where she live,  she really wanted to make a real bargain and can’t blame her! The problem is that I shouldn’t shop at all…but somehow I ended up with a super cute playsuit with floral prints from Topshop and a blue tunic from Weekday. OOoopS!
Well ,I just say as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City:

“I want my money where I can see them, hanging in my closet”.

Together they are a Flower Blues…

The first 160 people in line will receive a bracelet; on the bracelet you will be given a specific time for shopping in their designated area. The bracelets are only needed for the women’s shoes, bags and accessories. Customers shopping the men’s collection or the women’s garments will not require a bracelet.
To make sure as many customers as possible are able to buy from the Jimmy Choo for H&M collection, they have a limitation. Every customer can buy the whole collection but with a limitation of buying maximum one per product, i.e. not more than one size (shoes/garments) or piece (accessories) per product per customer. The limitation covers the whole Jimmy Choo for H&M Collection.

Jimmy Choo is a Malaysian designer based in London who studied at the London College of Fashion in the ’80s and started selling his own designs in 1986.
In 1996, the phenomenal Tamara Mellon and Choo founded Jimmy Choo, Ltd., which quickly became a household name after Carrie Bradshaw was robbed of her “Choos” on Sex and the City.
Jimmy Choo frequently sells out in a heartbeat, and I guess this collection of belts, evening bags and day totes, chokers, bracelets and cuffs, featuring crystals, studs and animal prints, is going to go in about half a heartbeat!

My philosophy on interior design is:  ”Fill your home with beautiful things and you cannot help but live beautifully each day.”  Waking up inspired by magnificent colours, luxuriating in soft fabrics and sinking on a dog day afternoon into a cozy couch with a cup of tea, that’s the life!  Creating a beautifully designed abode can be daunting for some, but it is wonderfully relaxing to come home to a nest which is truly an expression of your style.

Much like fashion design, interior trends come and go but the best dressed homes are the ones which emanate character and reflect one’s personality.  Magazines are inspirational and aspirational, providing a great basis for us to create our fanciful dreams.  As a fashionistah, I find myself drawn to Elle Decor and Vogue Living, as well as coffee table books on Paris apartments, travels through India and Morrocan zilij (mosaic tilework).  My aesthetic is a fusion of opulent styles ranging from British Colonial, turn of the century France mixed with Asian influences and personal mementos and artwork.

Be not afraid.  Here are some tips for adventures in interior design:

• Start with colour – Let’s consider a white wall as a blank canvas, on which you are the artist with free reign!  The lighter the colour the larger the room appears and inversely, the darker, the smaller a room’s look (makes a lofty room cozier).  If you are unaccustomed to risk-taking, perhaps choose a shade as an accent wall.  Such as painting a wall with a fireplace a chocolate brown, leaving the rest of the walls white.  Hot colours for 2010 (so fashion forward) are caramel yellows, reds with magenta undertones and citrus greens.  Beiges and greys are always ‘in’ neutrals and you can always punch these up with accent decor in stylish colours.
• Select key pieces – Furniture is a long-term investment.  Ensure you select wisely in furniture styles which will last.  A well selected sofa or coffee table will endure through trends and should be durable enough to host a party of friends over time.  Refurbish flea market finds by reupholstering with bright hued damasks or with a fresh coat of paint.  Voila! You have just acquired a unique piece at a fraction of the cost.

• Play with textures and prints – While there is a part of me that loves matchy-matchy, there is also the part that adores fashionable contrasts.  To avoid over the top visual distraction, ensure that the prints have a cohesion.  This can be achieved by 1) either the print or patterns are in the same tone (match cool with cool or warm with warm) or 2) most of the room is monotone or muted in some way, with the print or texture standing out distinctly.  Too many loud prints will compete for attention, giving a sensory vibration which is akin to having two rock records playing at the same time.  Turn that racket off!
• Artistic expressions – I am exploding with ideas to personalize your home.  From taking beautiful fabric (Try Designer Fabrics, 1360 Queen St. West) or Japanese papers (Japanese Paper Store, 887 Queen St. West) and affixing them to canvases to create your own artwork to having a printshop blow up your travel photos from Greece or India onto oversized giclees.  Mini art galleries can be created by clustering various sizes of framed photographs over an office desk or in a hallway.  Isaac Mizrahi and Michael Kors have this in their homes, so you are in good company!
