there’s only two more nights to catch the very urbane Mr Wayne Hooper…next thurday/friday at Angie Angies…7-9…there is tonight of course, assuming…Panza Verde, 8-10. Yet another musical hole in the soul of Antigua. But, hey…we’ve got the Friday night brass band at the Palacio, plus the ever swingin’ occasional marimba group on the steps of City Hall. Yeah, City Hall….is the council or whoever’s in charge(sic)have meetings with the Mayor in his cell? web cam and skype?

Bull aka Santiago (James) Durham, long time Antigueno, 3rd place winner in the famed Terlingua Chili Cookoff…think 5 stars in Michelin…slipped, broke a hip bone(connected to the thigh bone, which is…)and now in the Betancourt Hospital in San Felipe…4th floor, rm #7…3 weeks, he says the docs said…the room is, shall we say, ‘spartan’….if know of any hot 20 yr olds that look great in a nurses outfit…call me…gawd..the birthday party in Vegas….Brenda in a nurses costume…wonder if I saved any photos?

Jason aka Goldfinger, back from the frozen wastes of Magadan(Siberia)….made me roadtest a ‘sample’ of the mezcal in the wood kegs behind the bar at Lava…

And I’m saddened by the implosion of what was, is and might still be La Casbah..I heard number$$s but since I never verify/fact check here, I’m not ‘goin’ there…significant though…Angel, across the street at the new location of Djinn? sloooow….very sloooow…funny how, on that block at least, a move across the street can seem like the kiss of dearth…or death…Ricardo’s Tabacos y Vinos thrived after moving across the steet…por que/why? feng shui, dumb ass luck?

I thought i was in a time warp last night…no, not THAT bar….the lobby of Nido Antigua, Fushions’ complex? in the corner is a selection of crystals, crystals on chains and even a couple of Tibeten singing bowls…rum the inner rim with a stick, wand, whatever and the bowl starts to reverberate….kinda cool, especially with incense, an indian bedspread and some bean bags…maybe jefferson airplane.

Races in the morning..Pedro Cofino track, half way to Esquintla…9am…if you’re taking heart medications, bring double: trust me.

When about 200 chefs band together to get their voices heard to Stop the Mega Quarry, the crowd comes. Just like what happened a year ago at Foodstock, foodies came in droves to support the efforts to stop the proposal to build a limestone mega quarry at Melancthon township. When last year the attendance was 28,000, this year it swelled to 40,000 supporters. I hope this strong showing would be a positive step towards stopping the build. Today the City of Toronto connected to the source of its food. Me being there today, I hope I made a difference in my own little way.

From my learning from last year, I came ready and armed with plastic bowls, plastic spoons, paper towels and shoes that I could sink in the mud. Knowing it was going to be a massive crowd, I came early with EyeCandyTO’s Abraham Wornovitzky. It paid too that we had a scheme how to go through the massive list as we scrutinized the Soupstock map while we waited at Jamie Kennedy’s line. This year, I promised myself I was not going to make the mistake of missing out on his good food because I was too late to get to his booth. Thirty minutes into the event, we met up with Kanto’s Diona and Trevor. It was good too to be with friends as we ended up tasting a lot of soups, sharing what we get at each hawker booth. Here is a list of what we have gone through:

Jamie Kennedy’s Kitchen – Swiss Chard Soup

Velouté Catering – Organic Root Vegetable with Fried Onion Leeks and Sweetbreads

Supi Cucu – Potato, Chorizo, Chickpea & Corn Stew with Cilantro Scallion Chimichurri, Diablo’s Fuego & Sour Cream

Joshna Maharaj – Masala Root Veg Puree with whole grain bread crumb

Boehmer – Sturgeon cartilage, bone marrow and belly meat bouillabaisse

Taboo – Muskoka Smoked Yellow Split Pea Soup with Smoked Armstrong Pig, Four Season Sprout and Maple Chili Oil

Alternative Grounds – Fresh Coffee!

Petit Thuet – Artisan bread topped with sausage and mustard

The Gabardine – Potato, Kale Soup with Corn bread croutons/Caldo Verde

One99 Restaurant – Canadian French Onion Soup

Crush Wine Bar – Borscht with Horseradish Goat Yogurt

Poutini’s – Laksa

Ursa – Dehydrated Vegetable with Rice Paper Soup

Urban Herbivore – Sweet Potato with Coconut Soup

Gushi – Butajiru Miso Soup

Lee and Bent – Hot and Sour Soup

Gwailo – Winter Melon and Bacon Soup

So it would be an understatement to say that my belly was full this afternoon. My top three faves were Supi Cucu’s, One 99 restaurant and Velouté Catering. It was indeed a good day to have soup. Just like last year, I hope the politicians don’t miss what we were trying to say. A crowd of 40,000 at today’s Soupstock should make it obvious that City of Toronto is saying No to the Mega Quarry.

The next morning, I awoke with more excitement than usual, knowing that today would be the day that I would finally get to experience The Beatles’ Liverpool, courtesy of Tim Hemmings and his “Pool of Life” tour. Any of you who plan or will plan on visiting Liverpool and need a good Beatles tour, look no further than Tim. He’s amazing and a Beatles fan as well, which will make the experience of getting to see the red painted, iron gates of Strawberry Fields, the barber shop, the bank and the “shelter in the middle of a roundabout” that surround Penny Lane, and all other now-historic Beatles sites much more enjoyable.

A few highlights of the tour include a trip to St Peter’s Church and the church hall across the road, where John and Paul first met. In the graveyard that lies outside the church, you will find the gravestone of “Eleanor Rigby” and next to it the gravestone of the last name “McKenzie”, both references to “Eleanor Rigby” the song.

Around the time we visited Liverpool, it happened to be near the 50th anniversary of when Ringo joined the group and made his debut with them at a place called “Hulme Hall”. While it wasn’t on our scheduled itinerary for the day, Tim insisted that we needed to see it. (Another reason why he’s the best tour guide ever.) So off we went underneath the Queensway Tunnel and into Wirral, where we scored a visit to the Hall.

One the most memorable parts of the trip was getting to visit all four of the Beatles’ childhood homes. What made this experience unique was that John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s childhood homes were bought by the National Trust, and the interior and exterior were recreated to look as it did when they both lived there. For any Beatles fan, this is a must-see. There were undoubtedly many world renowned Beatles songs that were composed inside both of theses residences. Not only that, but this experience in particular is special because it gives you a sense of their home life as well. Most of the other attractions that you get to see, sort of epitomize their status as legendary icons, but inside the walls of their homes (technically their parents’/ guardians’ homes) you don’t get that impression at all. Rather, you possess a view of them in a more humanizing sense, which makes the experience all the more intriguing as a fan, crossing over from being an admirer to actually being in their shoes.

My most favorite part of the day was getting to go inside the Casbah, one of the more infamous venues the Beatles played in their early days. We had the entire place to ourselves as Rory Best, brother of Pete Best (aka the original drummer of The Beatles) showed us around and regaled us with stories on how the place came to be, a vision that was predominately his mother, Mona’s idea. The place became a hotspot for young people to congregate and listen to live rock n roll music, delivered most times by The Beatles, who were the official house band. But The Beatles didn’t just play there, they helped decorate the place too. John Lennon painted Aztec symbols on one of the ceilings, in between bouts of carving his name in the wall in two separate places in the club.

Paul McCartney painted this ceiling, the room where the infamous picture of him playing to Cynthia, John’s then-girlfriend, later-first-wife, sat in the front row.

All four Beatles painted the stars on the ceiling of the back room, one of which now hangs proudly at “The Beatles Story” museum.

And what’s a visit to The Casbah without seeing the “spider room”? the site of many early Beatles’ performances.

The entire club plastered with memorabilia with the combination of Rory’s commentary gives you a truly authentic experience into the early days of The Beatles. Like the childhood homes, The Casbah also represents a humanizing element to The Beatles, blurring the line between idol worship of legendary icons and illustrating them as ordinary kids who loved rock n roll enough to start a band.

Overall, that is the absolute impression I got from the city and something that I think you could only get from actually experiencing The Beatles’ Liverpool. You understand them from an entirely different viewpoint. They are thought of not just as legendary figures, but as real people, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for the places that undoubtedly contributed to who they became. It compliments their artistry as well as displays another dimension in their story, seemingly illustrating brand new facets of material for us to enjoy as fans. Liverpool is quite a fascinating city all on its own, and if my favorite band had to be from any city, I’m glad it was this one.

A couple months back I was lucky enough to be asked to do a music feature in Mission Valley News. My editor advised that I pick a band I felt strongly about and who had something interesting to promote. Within 5 minutes I was exchanging emails with Old Tiger‘s singer Dustin Lothspeich. I knew a full-length album was around the corner for the guys and thanks to the release of “Free” by the Lost Ark Studio I had quickly fallen into fandom. Between Lothspeich’s articulate banter about music and seeing the guys perform live I was happy to start learning more about the band’s beginning, current focus and what they were about to unleash.

The culmination of years of hard work comes in just a couple weeks with Old Tiger’s CD Release show on 10/12. A Friday night at the Casbah is always a sure bet but they have upped the ante and put together a stunning local lineup just to further entice you. Nena Anderson and The Mules start the night with their soulful Americana vibe crafted by tremendously talented musicians. Guitarist Mike Butler is also the extraordinary producer of Old Tiger’s release Love Have Mercy – to call this man multi-talented is a gross understatement. He has worked on an incredible collection of recordings in San Diego and also possesses an exhilarating ability to wail on guitar. If ever there was a time to fall in love with SD’s music community- this is surely it. Nena Anderson’s earnest tone and sweet voice coupled with the delicate charm of her songs is crush-worthy. *Swoon* Find some of her songs here. “I Fall In Love Too Fast” may be telling of how you’ll feel about her soon enough.

As if these vintage voices weren’t enough, The Heavy Guilt bring their own brand of contemporary voices in San Diego music as they are sandwiched in this lineup of rad. I’ve seen the Guilt more than any other band in the last year and if you haven’t had the pleasure you’ll only need to see them once to understand why. These six talented individuals give passionate performances from start to finish and blend their unique abilities into a big powerful sound. Erik Canzona’s vocals range from tender and yearning to bold and belting. Al Howard’s intensity at percussion adds creativity to the pieces he himself writes. Rounding out this warm rich sound are keyboardist Josh Rice, guitarist Sean Martin, bassist Jason Littlefield, and drummer Jenny Merullo – each bringing technical ability along with bona fide chops. If you ever wanted to see me dance with reckless abandon- meet me at a Guilt show.

Another awesome feature of The Casbah is the Atari Lounge- tucked behind the outdoor patio it offers an additional bar and an intimate area for musical wonderfulness. For OT’s release they tapped North County fave’s The Red Fox Tails to provide their surf jazz stylings between main stage sets. Haven’t had a chance to check these guys out but from what I heard online their retro vibe will fit perfectly with the other bands of the night. Make sure and take your PBR tall boy to the Atari Lounge and show them some love.

Finally Old Tiger is going to hit the stage in celebration of the tireless efforts of the past few years. Dustin Lothspeich’s vocal prowess is undeniable- there is a purity and soulfulness that come through whether he’s crooning on a tune like “Settle Down” or giving more grit in the heartachey verses of “Head.” All the while looking effortless on his majestic Flying V guitar. Usually planted at center stage, Matt Phillips anchors the guys with solid bass lines as Eric Boone gives subtle flavors at drums. As laid-back as the Old Tiger members appear, the guys put forth heaps of energy in an effort to make a cohesive sound that speaks to the listener. The CD release set promises to be a mammoth undertaking as they plan to play Love Have Mercy in its entirety along with older and newer tunes – I know they are giving this their all. Have a look/listen at one of the tunes here:

Old Tiger – Get Along from Old Tiger on Vimeo. Filmed by Jay Reilly (of The Red Fox Tails) at San Diego’s infamous Soda Bar.

Simply put Love Have Mercy is the sort of album I can’t stop talking about. I have a new favorite song every few days (today it’s “Tambourine”) – the tell tale sign of a record I will keep in heavy rotation. I sing the praises of the band and the album to anyone who will listen (and if they won’t listen I write it on a scrap of paper and stuff it in their pocket.) Listening to the collection and knowing the enthusiasm of Lothspeich and his band as he speaks of the phase to come creates an infectious buzz. This event and album are things I feel honored to be able to promote in whatever small way. Not sure how many more ways I can say that you have to be at this show.

You can preview a couple of the tracks here and here (and pre-order the disc) Plus make sure to pick up your tickets here. $10 for an epic evening of San Diego talent is truly a steal.

I’m pleased to report my site has had more than 1,500 visitors. Take that Facebook!

I think this is where the word “relevant” is used. Is 1,500 visits to a website a lot? Heck no. But, is it a lot when you think that there have been 1,500 visits to my little corner of the internet by people who are interested in Canadian music? I think so.

This was never meant to be a numbers game for me. As I think I mentioned in the background, I just wanted to keep a log of music that I stumble across while bumbling around the internet. I did, however, want to recognize this milestone and point out some highlights.

Since starting the blog I have lived and worked in Collingwood, Cambridge and now Hamilton. I tried to get involved in the local music scene by checking out as many live acts as possible when living in each town. I was lucky that a bar/pub called The Casbah opened in Collingwood while I was living there. It was exciting to see The Sheepdogs perform in that space the day of (or maybe one day after) they were featured on the cover of the Rolling Stone. I was also semi-starstruck when Hayden walked past me while Lou Cannon performed on stage. This is also the bar I first saw Hooded Fang, the band that provided much of the soundtrack to my nights playing crokinole with my roommate in Collingwood. An April 28th performance by Joel Plaskett at the Avening Community Hall was also a great show. Even though I was really pumped for it, the band and venue both lived up to the hype.

Then, it was off to Cambridge. The music scene in this town is pretty weak. Apparently there was one good music bar called Fiddler’s Green (any relation to the Tragically Hip song?? Apparently they played there), but it closed down and currently sits empty on the bank of the Grand River. Luckily, Cambridge is close to both Waterloo and Guelph. In Waterloo, I attended Danny Michel’s annual Christmas concert (he played one Christmas song) and in Guelph, I saw Hooded Fang perform and Cold Specks play to a small crowd in a theatre in the Sleeman’s Centre before there was any hype about her in North America. I also attended Hillside Festival for the first time and saw bands like Joel Plaskett Emergency, Great Lake Swimmers, Kathleen Edwards, Sandro Perri and Half Moon Run. I had seen this band open for Patrick Watson a few months before and was eager to see their show again. I have to say, it was completely different. They were more confident and their image was much more polished. It was like they realized they were just about to break out into a wider audience. As a side note, my Half Moon Run post from awhile ago is actually my second most popular post ever, which is impressive given it wasn’t that long ago that I wrote it.
So, here I am in Hamilton, which is really a city that has found a niche as an artistic community. It has been picked up on by the major local media and real estate agents alike (“live in trendy James St. North…”). Hamilton hasn’t let me down. I’ve watched John K. Samson perform a solo show under large oak trees in a school yard, I attended Supercrawl and watched Great Lake Swimmers perform on a small War Child stage in the middle of the day and Owen Pallett perform a sonically amazing set. I could also see Besnard Lakes in two nights and will be seeing Death From Above 1979 at the end of October.

So, 1,500 views, maybe 45 posts, three cities, three jobs and here we are…the day after the Polaris Prize was awarded to Feist. It seems fitting – kind of like a fresh start.

I have had a rough couple of days, which involved my computer crashing and my hard drive needing to be erased, and well, the only way I know to solve that kind of stress is knitting. So let’s talk yarn, shall we?

As you know, I packed the Spruce Jaywalkers plus an insurance skein of Indigodragonfly as trip knitting. This was more than enough wool to see me through my trip, but I’ll admit to leaving a little extra room in the top of my bag for one or two skeins of souvenir wool – something I wouldn’t be able to get in Toronto.

This was the plan, and it lasted for a whole day. On Day 1, we drove to Baddeck. Baadeck Yarns was closed, so I didn’t buy wool. Instead, L and I went out for a nice dinner and walked around the town, and then holed up in our room to watch a movie (we were both exhausted). I had cast on the Spruce Jaywalkers on the plane, but because I drove from the airport, there wasn’t much done. I knit, we watched silly TV – nothing crazy.

The next day, we left Baddeck and headed north to the Cape Breton Highlands National Post. L drove, so I knit on my socks. Then we passed a sign that said something like “viewpoint: 500m.” We turned a corner, and sure enough, there was a great view (this happens pretty much nonstop on the Cabot Trail, just so you know). We saw a little parking area to the right and decided to pull off and take a picture. We got out of the car, and I glanced up at the sign in the parking lot and, well, I saw this:

I swear I didn’t notice the sheep sign when we pulled in.

I decided to just pop in and see what they had. You know, be polite. After all, we were in their parking lot, intending to stand on their picnic table to take a picture; it seemed rude not to at least make a casual perusal of their wares. That’s when I saw the yarn. Lots and lots of yarn. 2-ply, worsted-weight, milled in PEI at MacAusland’s Woollen Mills from Maritime sheep, yarn, for $4.50 a skein. Casually (by which I mean, after picking up and putting down a half-dozen skeins and exclaiming about the colours) I asked about the yardage. At $4.50, I figured it had to be paltry. Nope: 200 yds per. At $4.50. I bought a sweater’s worth.

Originally, I was going to get a dark blue, but then L pointed out that I always wear blue, and I looked down at my outfit ready to contradict him and realized I was, indeed, wearing all blue. I think green is a nice spice up.

We got back on the road, and, as you know, had a lovely time camping. That yarn, though – well, I thought about that yarn a lot. I went through my mental catalogue of sweater patterns I’ve been wanting to make, and I narrowed it down to two. During the more painful hikes (and I was in pain), I’m a little embarrassed to say that thinking about that yarn and what I was going to knit with it distracted me enough to get me through. Should I knit the Shapely Boyfriend, for which I had enough wool in the car, or should I stop in on the way back and pick up the skeins necessary to knit Kate Davies’ Bláithín?

Look at me, knitting my Spruce Jaywalkers, not even thinking about the yarn in the car. So dedicated.

The morning we left the park, we stopped in a Tim Horton’s for coffee and I made L look at the two sweaters and tell me what he thought. His solution: buy the extra skeins since it’s cheap and decide later. The man is a genius.

I am pretty much sold on Bláithín now, I must say.

Despite this windfall of lovely (and affordable!) yarn, I still wanted to stop in at Baadeck Yarns. I was so beside myself that I forgot to take a picture, but trust me, it’s a woolly heaven. Pat carries everything you could ever want, but because I was on a mission to find yarns I couldn’t get in Toronto, I went for the Handmaiden custom colourways. The Handmaiden is the daughter of the Fleece Artist (who is based in Cape Breton) and let me just say, an eye for colour runs in the family. I splurged. I bought three skeins of Casbah (a merino, cashmere, nylon blend in a fingering weight). I figured that for all in all (considering my super deal on the PEI wool), I was doing okay.

Two skeins of Lupin, which is enough to make almost any shawl I want, plus a skein in Bras d’Or Lakes, which will become socks, probably for my mum.

By the time I got to Gaspereau Valley Fibres, though, I was starting to feel a little guilty about the money I’d spent. I mean, I work in a yarn store, so maybe all of this was a little excessive? I went in and was immediately overwhelmed. They had so much Fleece Artist. And so much new stuff in general. Honestly, I couldn’t choose and after making a tour and touching a lot of wool, I left empty-handed. The next day, though, I was feeling a little incomplete (and also maybe a little ridiculous). There had been a basket of Fleece Artist Merino 2/6, a 100% superwash merino sock yarn, in this beautiful mottled brown and copper colourway, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I was convinced it was going to be gone by the time we got back, but I decided we should go anyway, just in case.

Gaspereau Valley Fibre’s designated greeter.

It was there. Three skeins, and it was even lovelier than I had remembered. I asked Manda, the manager, what colourway she thought it was and, based on the colourcard, we estimated Earth. Well, that sold me. I bought two skeins, which are slightly different, but if alternated should be fairly seamless. I’m thinking about a shawl.

Honestly, how could I pass this up?

All in all, it’s quite a hall, and my stash has officially reached a critical point (it is overflowing its containment area). Honestly, though, I don’t care. I mean, look at this! And all wool that was a now-or-never purchase, and that I have tentative plans for. So no worries.

Samya looks skeptical, but I think that’s because I stole her bench.
