Last Christmas – Cascada

Pop music has made a real revivial in 2009, one perhaps not seen so much since the late 90s/early 00s. It’s a bit naughtier and more naked now, but the sentiment is still there. Here we take a look at the 30 biggest people and acts of the last twelve months in music. Lily Allen, Dizzee Rascal, Taio Cruz, David Guetta, Daniel Merriwether and Calvin Harris probably would have been included were the list a bit longer.

30. Alesha Dixon
It’s not really for musical merit that Alesha Dixon warrants a mention – sure, she managed to score a Top 3 hit with ‘Breathe Slow’ and two further Top 20 singles this year, but all the fuss was on her thanks to the contraversial sacking of Arlene Phillips on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and Alesha’s appointment in her place. It’s a shame really, because Alesha’s popularity was soaring, and all the furore and the BBC’s refusal to let her perform reduced the Gary Barlow-penned ‘To Love Again’ to chart at a mere No.15. Not quite the same success enjoyed by Cheryl Cole on the rival Saturday night show, then.

29. Cascada
The album was shit and only one single from it managed to dent the UK charts, but ‘Evacuate The Dancefloor’ hit the headlines for reducing Michael Jackson’s ‘Man In The Mirror’ to a No2 placing, and becoming the milestone 1100th Number One single in the UK.

28. The Saturdays
It’s easy to forget that The Saturdays have only been around for a year and a half. This year they’ve scored hit singles with ‘Issues’, ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’, ‘Work’ and ‘Forever Is Over’, released another album, gone on a sell-out tour, and been increasingly gobby in the press. The disappointing chart performance of that crucial second album will set all eyes on their next single ‘Ego’, due for release in the New Year.

27. Girls Aloud
Remember that band Cheryl Cole’s in? They’re alright, aren’t they? This was the year that Girls Aloud’s run of consecutive Top 10 singles finally came to an end, with ‘Untouchable’ becoming their first ever single to have to settle for No11. Still, they had yet another sell-out arena tour, and have gone on to do interesting solo projects. You might have heard Cheryl’s been busy, but her aside; Kimberley’s been dabbling in presenting, Nicola in make-up, Sarah in acting, and Nadine has a solo record out in 2010.

26. Miley Cyrus
Miley went from being one of the world’s best role-models to being voted the world’s worst in a magazine poll this year, but she has had a pretty successful twelve months nonetheless. Frustratingly she has yet to score a UK Top 10 hit after stalling at No11 twice (‘Party in the USA’ is a TUNE), but her single ‘The Climb’ went on to become this year’s X Factor winner’s single and her ‘Hannah Montana’ franchise spawned a movie and a Top 20 hit for ‘Hoedown Throwdown’ without it even being released as a single. Dancing around a pole in a revealing outfit at the Kids Choice Awards probably wasn’t her smartest move, though.

25. Michael Bublé
He’s been around a fair while has the Boobster, but after another two appearances on ‘The X Factor’ he’s had major success with his latest album, and he’s had his most successful UK single to date with ‘Haven’t Met You Yet’. He says Leon Jackson is finding things a bit tough, by the way. 

24. Tinchy Stryder
Grime-pop made itself right at home this year thanks to Chipmunk, N-Dubz and, most impressively, Tinchy Stryder. Tinch churned out four amazing singles this year, two of which managed to hit the top spot. He made the most of Amelle Berrabah before she became a Sugababes-fallout-backlash-victim, and propelled N-Dubz into the upper eschelons of the charts for the first time on the aptly-titled ’Number 1′.

23. Little Boots
It’s not been easy for Little Boots. Victoria Hesketh started 2009 as the winner of so many One To Watch polls that it was always going to be tough to live up to the hype. Despite charting in the Top 5, debut album ‘Hands’ soon disappeared altogether from the album charts and single ‘New In Town’ failed to tap into the Top 10. Thank goodness then for ‘Remedy’, which saved her career in the nick of time by charting at No6 and reviving the dying album sales. Third single ‘Earthquake’ failed to crack the Top 80, but we’ll overlook that as a minor blip.

22. Robbie Williams
Ah yes, him. After the ‘Rudebox’ episode Robbie Williams saw his commercial return to form this year with two Top 10 singles and the third fastest-selling album of the year behind JLS and SuBo. Unfortunate scheduling clashes on three occasions with X Factor stars has prevented him from hitting the Number One spot at all, but you can’t possibly deny that it’s been a great year for Robbie.

21. Joe McElderry
Poor Joe. He (along with Stacey Solomon, we hasten to add) was easily the most genuine, down-to-earth contestant on this year’s ‘X Factor’ and, luckily, has an amazing voice as well. The Rage Against The Machine campaign was always going to affect the eventual winner, but it’s just a shame that it turned out to be poor Joe. Still, if midweek sales figures are a good indication, he will at least be at the top of the charts at the turn of the decade next week.

20. Jedward
Horrendously untalented and relentlessly annoying, John and Edward Grimes killed entertainment on a weekly basis on this year’s ‘X Factor’, but somehow became a cultural phenomenon in the process. Jumping around the stage so much, it was easy to overlook the fact that even when being dickheads they were actually dead behind the eyes – personality minimal as well as talent minimal. Still, they were very useful for all those post-modern social-commenting this-is-what-entertainment-is-now journalists.

19. Beyoncé
While Britney Spears was miming and stomping around different stages all over the world and Lady Gaga was wearing hilariously unpredictable outfits distracting from her music, Beyoncé was “just getting on with it”. She released hit after hit after hit this year, and won the 4Music ‘World’s Biggest Popstar’ poll. Oh, and she’s also had a good year acting-wise as well.

18. Ryan Tedder
It’s been another great year for the OneRepublic frontman. This year he produced four of the year’s best singles – Jordin Sparks’ almighty ‘Battlefield’, Leona Lewis’ ‘Happy’, Beyoncé’s worldwide hit ‘Halo’, and Kelly Clarkson’s Top 20 US single ‘Already Gone’. Unfortunatley the latter got him in alot of bother with Clarkson, who responded to claims that her track and ‘Halo’ were one and the same by claiming to have never heard ‘Halo’ when she recorded ‘Already Gone’. She complained to the record label that the track was chosen as a single, and when that didn’t work she stripped it right back to an accoustic version for all promotional appearances. Pretty damn good song though.

17. Alexandra Burke
She spent most of the year being generally annoying on Twitter until one of her tracks leaked and the world gasped at how painfully average it was. Luckily, in October she pulled out the big guns – debut album ‘Overcome’ is probably the best X Factor album to date, and ‘Bad Boys’ managed to be amazing despite having Flo Rida in it. Don’t forget, when it comes to the alphabet she “only sings the crooked letters”.

16. Fearn Cotton
Radio 1 overhauled its daytime schedule this year, and the reign of Jo Whiley on the 10-1 slot came to an end. Fearn Cotton has been surprisingly good… she has alot of un-fans but she’s been consistently entertaining and has improved vast amounts from her early days at the station with Reggie Yates.

15. Sugababes
Oh dear, it’s been a bit of a year for the Sugababes. In the aftermath of their flop album ‘Catfights and Spotlights’ they hurried to the US and spent months re-working their sound with some of the most expensive producers in the business. New single ‘Get Sexy’ came out and shocked the fanbase, reached No2, and then the trouble started. Rumours surfaced of in-fighting, Amelle was reported to have disappeared, and suddenly Jade Ewen’s name was being thrown around as a new member. It wasn’t Amelle who was out though – Keisha was sacked and Sugababes 4.0 was launched with none of the original members. On the plus side, ‘About A Girl’ was outstanding.

14. JLS
The world doesn’t end if you come 2nd on ‘The X Factor’ after all. While Eoghan Quigg released the worst album of all time, JLS were planning complete domination, and they certainly got it. Their self-titled album is the second-fastest seller of the year, massively outdoing Alexandra Burke’s ‘Overcome’, and they’ve enjoyed six-figure sales in seven days for both of their singles to date. Not bad at all.

13. Whitney Houston
Judging the comeback campaign of Whitney Houston is difficult because, although her album was a worldwide success and ‘Million Dollar Bill’ made the Top 5, she had a complete disaster on ‘The X Factor’ when her dress came undone and she acted like she’d just been woken up from a thousand-year sleep. A complete loony then, but the records have been selling nonetheless.

12. Jay-Z
Mr Beyoncé has had another great year, churning out two of the year’s best singles. ‘Run This Town’ beat the Sugababes comeback to the top of the charts at the end of the summer, and also served as Rihanna’s first hit since the Chris Brown episode. Even that though was trumped by the amazingness of Alicia Keys collaboration ‘Empire State of Mind’, which gives Paloma Faith a run for her money as being the best song about New York released this year. Nice one, Z.

11. Pixie Lott
Arguably No11 is a bit over-generous, but let’s not forget that Pixie Lott bought back the concept of a “real popstar” without any help from a reality TV show. The press apparently forgot about Billie Piper and named Pixie the first female solo artist in history to make her chart debut at No1 without winning a TV talent show first, and then in September another record was given to her when ‘Boys and Girls’ became the highest climber to No1 in chart history. Two number one singles in a year isn’t bad at all, even if the sales were quite quiet when compared to others.

10. Florence and the Machine
In the nicest way possible, if it wasn’t for Michael Jackson’s death Florence and the Machine would have been at the top of the album charts for quite some time. They have yet to secure a Top 10 single, but thanks to numerous festival appearances and brilliant sales of LP ‘Lungs’, they are undoubtedly one of the biggest acts of the year. Frontwoman Florence Welsch was greeted with a stony silence when she collected her BRIT for ‘Critic’s Choice’ in February, but give it to her now and the crowd would probably be much more receptive.

9. Taylor Swift
Country star Taylor Swift finally conquered the UK this year. By “conquered” we mean one hit single and several underperforming follow-ups, but her fanbase is undeniably huge and sales of her album ‘Fearless’ have been consistently impressive. The Kanye West awards incident may have been like a slap in the face at the time, but it’s undeniably helped her popularity no end, and Swift is now without question one of the biggest stars in the world.

8. Susan Boyle
Her ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ audition clip has been shoved in the world’s face at breakneck speeds since it aired in April, but what a year it’s been for SuBo. Despite going a bit off the rails in the summer, she’s got the year’s biggest (and fastest) selling album to her name, shifting over 1,000,000 copies of ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ in less than a month.

7. Simon Cowell
Cowell’s had another megabucks year, thanks to Susan Boyle, Alexandra Burke and the stars of ‘X Factor’. Refusing to sign JLS may have been his biggest error, and the RATM Christmas No1 business has dented his public image no end, but just under 20 million people tuned in for the final of this year’s ‘X Factor’, and we haven’t even mentioned ‘American Idol’ and the returns of Leona Lewis and Kelly Clarkson. Another great year for him, then.

6. La Roux
The novelty seems to have worn off a bit with two underperforming singles, but in the first half of 2009 La Roux were the most played newcomers in the country. ‘In For The Kill’ is (assuming Joe McElderry belatedly gets to No1 this weekend) the best selling non-No1 of 2009 and they’ve shunted bucketloads of copies of their debut album. Frontwoman Elly Jackson’s hair has become iconic, and now the biggest challenge ahead of them is staying fresh for a second album.

5. Michael Jackson
Since his untimely death in the summer, sales of Michael Jackson’s albums have skyrocketed, a film has been produced, and one of his most little-known singles made a spectacular return to the charts. He posthumously won the MTV award for ‘Man of the Year’, and film ‘This Is It’ has broken all sorts of records.

4. RedOne
RedOne likes us to know when he’s produced a single – he’s been namechecked on hits by Lady Gaga, Sean Kingston, Sugababes, Alexandra Burke and Enrique Iglesias this year, and he’s also responsible for Little Boots’ ‘Remedy’ and a Pixie Lott album highlight as well. He’s in danger of being a bit over-exposed, but if Burke’s ‘Broken Heels’ is anything to go by, he should be OK for a while yet.

3. Black Eyed Peas
BEP were at the top of the US charts for what felt like forever when ‘Boom Boom Pow’ and ‘I Gotta Feeling’ got to the top in immediate succession, and here in the UK they and Lady Gaga are the only acts to secure three number one singles this year. It’s been ages since ‘Where Is The Love’ finally got the group into the mainstream, and all the signs suggest that they’re not easing up quite yet.

2. Lady Gaga
No-one has split opinion more this year than Lady Gaga. She’s had three number one singles, the biggest selling international album of the year, and further chart successes with ‘Paparazzi’ and ‘Love Game’. The fact she was invited to perform on ‘The X Factor’ after less than a year on the UK scene speaks for itself – she’s controversial, but she’s already a megastar. And she knows how to make a brilliant pop single.

1. Cheryl Cole

And so another year ends with Cheryl Cole at the centre of the nation’s hearts. Her solo career was never really going to be a commercial failiure, but few predicted it would take off just as massiveley as it did. RATM and Joe McElderry aside, ‘Fight For This Love’ was the fastest-selling single of the year with around 290,000 copies sold in one week, it’s the most played song on UK radio for 2009, and its sales outstripped every single record ever released by Girls Aloud. Parent album ‘3 Words’ spent a fortnight at No1 as well enjoying similar success. Her voice is questionable, the quality of the album is far from perfect, but here we have the UK’s biggest popstar. Loveable, charming, and a constant subtle hint of sadness; those labelling Cole as a national sweetheart are spot on. If she’s not careful she’ll be overexposed before long and the backlash will begin, but for now, like it or not, here is one of the nation’s biggest icons.

the new we the kings cd came out today! it is soooo good!! it’s called “smile kid” and i love it. the songs are good and upbeat. demi lovato is even featured on one of their songs. the songs i recommend are she takes me high, we’ll be a dream (featuring demi lovato) , heaven can wait, and the story of your life.

a cd i’ve been enjoying is the cascada cd called every time we touch. the group is like a pop/techno kind of group. i love the songs because they are fun to dance and sing along to. the songs i recommend are every time we touch, another you, bad boy, can’t stop the rain, and miracle.

Once again last night I decided to abandon the Simon Cowell sponsered excitement of The X Factor in favour of spending 3 hours sat in the shabby surroundings of the Hammersmith Apollo. Clubland Live 3 hit London last night with a half-arsed bang. Bringing with it the good, (Agnes, Darren Styles, Cascada) the bad, (Shouty-man MC Domino) and the ugly, (Fat chavs in tutus). They also bought N-Dubz with them. Who looked completely out of place amongst the rest of the dance line up. Highlights of N-Dubz set included the mysterious absence of Tinchy Stryder and Dappy encouraging the entire arena to call one member of the audience an ‘Ugly Fucker’ after they threw a bottle in his direction.

Poor old Natalie Horler from Cascada also suffered during her headline performance after her backing track failed to start. She was left looking rather awkward and somewhat annoyed. A couple of her dancers tried to keep the crowd entertained during the un-scheduled silent break but when the backing track still failed to materialise, Natalie and the rest of Cascada left the stage. I personally felt quite sorry for her. Because up until then her performance had easily been the best of the night.

Other highlights of the night included Agnes’ criminally short set, (I need you now, Release me) Darren Styles going through the motions, (Come Running, Save Me, Outta My Head) and Mini Viva, who are rather like a good version of the dismal Booty Luv, opening the show with the anthemic ‘Left my heart in Tokyo’ and forthcoming single ‘I Wish’.

All in all, despite the technical problems, the slightly disappointing sound levels and the presence of N-Dubz it was a fairly good night. I’m not particularly fond of the Hammersmith Apollo though mind-you. An overpriced bar, (Even for London!) and Toilets not dis-similar to the one that Renton dives into in Trainspotting don’t make for a good venue.

They were filming the show last night for Clubland TV, so it’ll be interesting to see how it comes across.

Florence and The Machine – Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) (Switch Remix)

If you frequent music blogs, you’ve probably seen about 70 Florence and The Machine remixes lately because, let’s face it, they are the new Phoenix/Passion Pit of the indie world. This remix, however, COMPLETELY dominates any other Rabbit Heart remix I’ve listened to so far. Switch makes this track peppy, catchy, and utterly unlike any other remix I’ve heard. He was, after all, behind M.I.A.’s Kala, so that should give you some idea as to what kind of energy he’s putting into this…

Another truly quality remix from Fake Blood. This, along with Kicking and Screaming, are on literally every playlist I make. This track builds like no other, and if you don’t know Little Boots you’ll quickly learn she’s THE hot thing in English electropop right now.

Cascada – Fever (Mowgli & Bagheera Remix)

To be honest it pains me a little to be posting Cascada, but this song is undeniably good. It does sound a TON like Crookers, though, which is nothing to bitch about, so I’m just gonna leave you with the admission that it is one of the catchier things I have heard…ever…god damnit…

25 de julio. Sentada en el Talula sin poder hacer nada. No para de llover. Lo raro es que en Port Moresby (capital de Papua Nueva Guinea), apenas llueve durante la estación seca. Ha venido con nosotros  y es que la llevamos enganchada como una cometa desde que salimos de Noumea.

Noumea.  Salida el 1 de mayo. Ese día dejamos definitivamente nuestra boya en la bahía de l’Orphelinat para irnos a otra que estaba a sólo 3 millas de distancia. Tuvimos buen viento y todo empezaba bien hasta que el motor se paró justo cuando bajábamos la mayor y decidíamos ir a coger esa boya.  Pequeño susto pero que sin más apuro que el de los vecinos de otras boyas que nos miraban con cara de: y que hacen esos llegando a vela hasta el fondeo? y del meñique del pie izquierdo de Joan Antoni, que se lo puso del revés. Luego fueron dos “cracks” hasta colocarlo en su lugar.

De la isla Mêtre, partimos hacia varios fondeos dentro de Nueva Caledonia. Entre ellos visitamos Ille de Pins y por último Lifou. De la primera recuerdo sus aguas cristalinas, sus rocas en medio de las bahías en forma de champiñones, sus carreteras planas  que nos permitió visitarla íntegramente con las bicicletas, de ese aire entre mediterráneo y tropical tan peculiar de esta isla, de sus pinos y de un pequeño bosque de un kilómetro de largo que parecía sacado de algún cuento de Andersen, de sus fondos marinos, concretamente en Gadji, donde una pared llena de coral de todas las formas y colores, caía en vertical a una profundidad de 15 a 20metros. Me quedé sin aliento.  Y de un tiburón curioso que nos estuvo siguiendo un buen rato hasta que decidió cambiar de rumbo y que también me quitó el aliento durante ese tiempo.

De allí saltamos a Lifou. Al llegar al fondeo, Daniel y Cristine (unos amigos de Noumea), nos  esperaban en la playa. Fue un reencuentro de lo más curioso y divertido. Esta vez  visitamos la isla en el coche de ellos. Desde los peñascos podías ver los fondos del mar pletóricos de toda clase de corales.

Fue un día excepcional. Llegó la noche y esta vez la despedida fue con los pies llenos de arena y empujando el auxiliar para regresar al Talula.

 Hasta ese momento todo fue bien pero al cabo de dos días, el tiempo decidió cambiar y tuvimos que buscar un nuevo fondeo para protegernos de los vientos del oeste que persistían en no dejarnos tranquilos. Fueron dos días de pura agonía. Nos cruzó un frente que nos hizo levantar ancla a las 4 de la madrugada ya que pasamos de estar bien protegidos, a tener toda la mar que se nos echaba encima.  Al mediodía, llegamos a un supuesto fondeo protegido de este viento. No hubo manera. Con el ancla a 20 metros de profundidad en medio de corales, arrecifes a otros 20 metros de nosotros donde el choque del mar contra ellos, hacía que casi casi, la espuma te salpicara a la cara, una ola pequeña y una mar de fondo que nos hizo cabalgar durante toda la noche sin poder pegar ojo y finalmente, una salida otra vez, a marchas forzadas, hacia otra isla situada al oeste. No se pudo. Una mar de gigantes y un viento en contra, hizo que diéramos media vuelta y que pusiéramos rumbo al siguiente país: Vanuatu. Y así con una velocidad de vértigo y planeando sobre las olas, dejamos Nueva Caledonia.

Nos separaban 250 millas de nuestra primera parada: Epi. El viento continuaba soplando del oeste  por lo que era casi imposible encontrar algún fondeo en el que pudiéramos estar tranquilos. Seguíamos sin poder apenas dormir hasta que llegamos a Malecula. Aquí todo cambió: vuelta a la normalidad (vientos del SE) y reencuentro con este maravillo país que personalmente, considero es lo mejor del Pacífico. Vanuatu fue paseos por las islas, intercambio de producto

 manufacturado por frutas y verduras, un mes apenas sin pasar por el banco, de buenas y sabias conversaciones, de gentes orgullosas de su identidad,

de un trato de igual a igual que te hacía todo muy fácil, de una visita a un volcán que le dejó a Joan Antoni sin tres uñas de los pies por no estar acostumbrado a caminar con botas en la isla más mágica de Vanuatu, de un fondeo en una pequeña bahía en la isla de Maewo , rodeado de un precioso pueblo

 y a la popa, una increíble cascada a la que accedías con el auxiliar y que cuando llevabas 5 minutos en ella, estabas rodeado de 10 personas viendo como lavabas

 o te duchabas claro está, con pantalones y camiseta por respeto a ellos y para evitar posibles picadas de mosquitos. Aquí ya estábamos en territorio de malaria. De la asistencia a un acto presidido por el primer ministro de Vanuatu que llegó en una pequeña lanchita y con su maleta ya que debía de pasar aquí la noche.

 De cómo el cocinero nos pedía salsas para acabar la cena que debía de ofrecer a tan ilustre personaje. Del saludo que nos ofreció el  primer ministro y de la ironía de la vida que nos hizo sentir un tanto incómodos ya que todavía no habíamos formalizado la entrada al país (Inmigración y Aduanas estaban en la siguiente isla). De la despedida de Maewo  y salto a Espíritu Santo donde hay una pequeña ciudad que parece el lejano oeste. De un señor con taparrabos y descalzo, comprando en un supermercado de la ciudad. En esta isla, hay tribus en la montaña que apenas han tenido contacto con el hombre blanco. Y de una comida en la isla de Pentecoste con el jefe de la tribu que nos hizo pasar un rato muy agradable y entender un poco más a esta sociedad que viven en plena adaptación con su medio, que son conscientes del cambio climático y que su longevidad es gracias al cultivo de sus propios productos sin ningún tipo de pesticidas ni fertilizantes.

Y así, con este buen sabor de boca, dejamos Vanuatu para visitar las islas Salomón. Aquí fueron 3 semanas donde al llegar a la capital Honiara, descubrimos que llevábamos una pieza del enrollador de génova roto. Tras hacer la entrada a este nuevo país, nos fuimos a un pequeño grupo de islas al norte de Guadalcanal, donde estuvimos unos días disfrutando de sus paisajes aunque no tanto de sus gentes.

Salomon es básicamente Marovo lagoon y Ghizo en nuestro recorrido. El primer lugar es una gran laguna en donde a través de unos canales de aguas no siempre profundas, entras a un nuevo mundo de pequeñas islas con sus poblados, de canoas llenas de artesanía que te invaden durante todo el día,  de aguas de mil matices, de paseos en el auxiliar por medio de canales llenos de coral,

de preguntar cada vez que llegábamos a un nuevo poblado si había cocodrilos o no y de keto keto, último poblado que estaba a 10 metros del Talula y en donde pasamos 3 días que acabó con nuestra paciencia y educación.

No sé qué es lo que les hace tan diferentes estas gentes del resto del Pacífico pero aquí el melanésico intenta sacar el máximo provecho de ti sin dar absolutamente nada a cambio. Desconozco sus códigos y evidentemente, en 22 días poco puedes hacer pero no entiendo a que es debido tanta codicia por parte de ellos cuando su clima hace que la naturaleza sea muy generosa y no necesiten grandes esfuerzos para conseguir alimentos.

Finalmente, después de 3 semanas estresantes ya que las cartas de navegación están llenas de errores, los fondeos profundos y llenos de coral y todas las noches encerrados en el Talula ya que estas islas están llenas de malaria, partimos con un supuesto buen parte hacia el archipiélago de las Louisiades (SE de PNG).

La travesía fue bastante dura. Vientos de 35 nudos sostenidos y una mar que barría el Talula a su antojo rebozándolo todo de sal y a un  Joan Antoni  desquiciado por no saber hacia dónde dirigir al Talula (oficios del capi y el  mío de aguantarlo).

 Fueron tres noches y tres días donde un sarao de isobaras, SCPZ, un alta y una baja, se divirtieron con nosotros.

Llegamos a una isla llamada Pana Kuba. Estábamos destrozados. Hacía un día y medio que no comíamos nada sólido. Esa noche dormimos como reyes.  El fondeo era una laguna entre tres islas. Delante teníamos una islita y toda una barra de arrecifes que conectaba con la otra isla, protegiéndonos de las olas pero permitiendo que entrara el viento.

Louisiades fueron 15 días más de islas llenas de encanto, de murallas de piedra haciendo de guardianes contra las inclemencias del tiempo, de mucha pesca con algún que otro resultado por mi parte, de navegaciones fantásticas con 3 nudos de corriente a favor en algunos tramos y de mucha tranquilidad.

Pero el viaje continúa (debemos de estar en Thailandia en diciembre y aún quedan muchas millas por delante) y después de dos días de navegación con puntas de 9 nudos de velocidad (nunca visto hasta ese día en el Talula), llegamos a Port Moresby aunque ese último día, amaneció torcido.

La noche anterior, una invasión de piqueros, intentaban ponerse en el Talula. Unos giraron el windex  y otro dejó la placa solar a rebozar de excrementos. Yo tonta de mí, cómo se pudo colocar en la placa pensé: mira éste, ya está colocado, ya no molestará. Y al día siguiente, al encender el motor, éste se paró. Otra vez el corazón en un puño y a sólo 13 millas de la entrada por una gran barrera de arrecifes. Hubo suerte y descubrimos rápidamente el problema. La angustia sólo duró media hora.

Y ya aquí en Port Moresby, estamos  reclutados en una  marina que es una burbuja de australianos, esperando que nos traigan un repuesto.

La marina es increíble y sus gentes aún más. El otro día,  un miembro del Royal Papua Yacht  Club que es cónsul honorífico de Austria, nos acompañó por todas partes ya que necesitábamos hacer unas cuantas gestiones. El hombre nos explicó que disparó y mató a un tipo que pretendía entrar en su casa (todavía no lo había conseguido) y dicho acto, no supuso preguntas “indiscretas” por parte de la policía. Joan Antoni y yo en un “cacho” mercedes con el “cónsul honorífico” en cuestión, no sabíamos que hacer o decir mientras él nos explicaba esta historia sin alterar por ello ni un milímetro el pulso de sus manos o el timbre de su voz.

La ciudad tiene 700.000 habitantes y el 96% está sin empleo. A todas partes debes de ir con taxi. Al menos es lo que te recomiendan hasta la saciedad las chicas de recepción.  Se imaginan la provocación que supone ser un blanquito turista con cara aturdida, gorrito para el sol y bermudas?. Es difícil entender pero hay que ver para creer lo que pasan éstas gentes.

Esperemos que la pieza llegue pronto de Australia y que Talula vuelva a la mar en dirección esta vez a Indonesia dejando finalmente el Pacífico para dar paso al Indico,
