I am feeling pretty frustrated at the moment, I have so many knitting / sewing design ideas in my head but dont seem to be able to find the time to get them out!!!

When me and emmms were working on the year of socks it was a bit of a squeeze to get the patterns out every month but as we were setting aside days devoted to sock design it all seemed to work out, maybe that is the way forward for this year to come! Even though we are not using a specific design idea we do want to keep pumping out the patterns for the future and I know emmms feels the same way about not having enough time!

I normally do most of my knitting at work or on the bus but this is no place to start a design when all you want is to be surrounded by yarn, reference books and wine, not squashed between a woman with a four year old on her lap and a window!! I have the same problem with designing at work, I get on a roll and suddenly have to go out and deal blackjack, put’s a big stop to the whole process, well that or instead of adding up the cards I start adding stitches and manage to confuse the hell out of everyone at the table!! Ha, ha, either way it is not working!

For me personally for the rest of 2009 I am going to concentrate on getting the Manos del Uruguay Scarf and Glove set I have been working on off the needles and onto paper by the 1st Dec,

I am going to decide once and for all between Cascade Eco+ and Fyberspates Scrumptious for my new sweater:

And by the new year I am going to finally finish and write down the pattern for the palm-less mitts that have been sitting there for months!!!!

Wow that feels better, I am not gonna let this crazy time nonsense beat me!!!

Come on emmms your turn!

I think most people tend to find a beer that they like and then mostly stick with it. This may well

I think most people tend to find a beer that they like and then mostly stick with it. This may well be why I have only just discovered a new beer made by Cascade called “Cascade Green”. As I saw it behind the counter in the fridge staring out at me, thoughts of St. Patrick’s day went through my mind. Thrill seeker that I am, I decided to give it a go. It turns out that this beer has nothing to do with four leafed clovers at all – the green part is based on the fact that it is carbon offset beer.

Now to be honest, I’m not really a person who can claim to be an eco-warrior. I do make an effort in not wasting water and I do put recyclable items in the appropriate bins but I only remember my green shopping bags during the short period of time between finishing my shopping and walking toward the checkout, most of my modes of transport run on rapidly depleting fossil fuels and I don’t feel driven to chain myself to old growth forests.

So it is with a certain amount of pride (and a significant amount of enthusiasm) that I feel that I can make a difference for future generations by having an icy cold beer. Not only will this assist in fending off the pending doom for our past planetary neglect but it also helps relieve at least some of the guilt associated with the baby fur seal killing Crown Lager I had just had prior (as well as my pending flight back to Canberra).

So Cascade have come up with this one and I can’t help but be a little bit cynical about the marketing use of the environmental theme in this product but why not, everyone else is and it’s got the stamp from the ‘Greenhouse Friendly Program’ so good on them.

As an aside it is actually quite a nice beer. Low carb, full strength, and the bottle’s green too.

Introducing my latest finished knitwear project: the blue damson. I finished this shawlette a couple

Introducing my latest finished knitwear project: the blue damson.

I finished this shawlette a couple of weeks ago but the eventual (welcome) arrival of Summer means there hasn’t been a pressing need to block it. It languished in my knitting basket (okay, okay, on the couch covered with knitting paraphernalia), ends unwoven, until the quiet idleness of Sunday afternoon made me think that I really should get on with it. It blocked beautifully (oh, the millions of pins…) and quickly (ah, the delights of summer!), and yesterday afternoon was all done and ready to meet the world.

Pattern: Damson by Ysolda Teague

Yarn: 2 skeins of Cascade 220 in a bright, saturated blue (possibly 8891 or 8892)

Needles: 4mm circular that was much too short

My blue damson on Ravelry

I like this pattern, and although it calls for sock yarn I think it works well with the DK-weight Cascade (and the yardage is perfect, binding off was a bit tense but I had at least a metre left). It’s shaped perfectly both to drape around your shoulders and scrunch around your neck. And when laid out, the tapered crescent shape and the zigzag lace edging make me think of a moth’s wings.

So: world, meet blue damson. Blue damson, meet the world. And now, back in the cupboard to wait for autumn.

10. Newcastle Brown Ale
England

This creamy ale from northern England is the perfect addition to an English pub visit. Even though many are not fond of Ale beers, Newcastle is a great gateway beer which can appeal to many tastes. It is wonderfully flavourful, creamy and smooth and a worthy addition to kick off our list.

9. Super Bock
Portugal

When one thinks of great beer, Portugal is usually not the first country which comes to mind. However, this lager from Porto is one of the most highly acclaimed beers in the world. It is the only beer to have won the Mode Selection gold medal award twenty times in a row. It has become very popular recently with football fans in Europe specially with fans of the most famous team in the world, Manchester United. Super Bock has established itself as one of the great beers in the world.

8. La Fin du Monde
Canada

Canada has a strong beer industry and is possibly the best beer-producing country outside of Europe. This beer from Quebec is a monster. It is a triple-fermented beer with a spicy kick to it. It has a strong personality and is almost like the champagne of beers. It is certainly a unique experience to drink one of these, and an adventurous one since the beer actually continues to ferment in the bottle! Therefore the actual alcohol content cannot be measured, running from 8-9% or higher, depending on the bottle.

7. Augustiner Helles
Germany

Oktoberfest!! This double-fermented German lager is possibly the most popular beer in the home of the world’s greatest beer festival, Munich. German beer is brewed under the Reinheitsgebot, a set of laws which pertain to brewing beer from only pure products (water, barley and hops). Augustiner is perhaps to finest this proud beer-producing country has to offer.

6. Pilsner Urquell
Czech Republic

If there’s one thing the Czechs know, its beer. They actually drink more beer than the Germans and Czech Republic is the home of the pilsener style. Urquell is one of the best pilseners in the world, and even though it may have a low alcohol content, it makes up for it with its taste and heavy body. Urquell also has the privilege of claiming to be the basis upon which most modern beers were made from, the first of the golden beers which have become so popular worldwide.

5. Cascade Premium Lager
Australia

Move over Fosters; this is the real Australian beer. This lager from Tasmania comes from the oldest brewery in the country and has made its name as one of the best in the world. Its unique hops blend gives it a spicy taste and a unique flavour which will keep you coming back for more.

4. Delerium Tremens
Belgium

Chances are you’ve never heard of this beer, but the Pink Elephant is one of the most highly acclaimed beers from one of the most highly acclaimed beer nations. Belgium is the ultimate beer county. No here else in the world can you find such quality and variety the your selection of beer. Delerium Tremens (which actually means hallucinations due to lack of alcohol) is a pale ale with a unique blend of yeasts which gives it a very distinctive fruity taste which compares to almost no other in the world.

3. Guinness
Ireland

Guinness is not just a beer; its a tradition, its a legend, its an integral thread in the Irish culture. Ask for a pint in Ireland and the bartender will just assume you mean a pint of Guinness. Aurthur Guinness felt so confidential in his recipe, he leased his brewery at St. James’ Gate in Dublin for 9,000 years. Guinness may not be for everyone. It is an acquired taste to be sure, but once you have acquired it there’s nothing else quite like it. Of course, Guinness in its home country tastes quite a bit better than exported, but a Guinness is still a Guinness no matter where you are in the world. There is no mistaking the Black.

2. Westvleteren 12
Belgium

When a beer has its own demand on the black market, you know its gotta be good. Brewed by Belgian monks, Westvleteren is often chosen by beer enthusiasts as the best beer in the world. It is one of the few breweries where the monks are the ones who actually still brew the beer. All of the profits of the beer go to the monastery or to other charitable causes, giving the beer a respectable sense of humble origin and tradition. The beer is hard to get your hands on. Sale of the beer is very restricted, being sold only at the brewery site, and then it is limited as to how much you may buy. Westvleteren beer is not one which has been tried by many people, but those who have sing its praises.

1. Heineken
Netherlands

This may seem like an odd choice for the best beer in the world, but there is a reason it is here. First is quality. This pilsener beer which has been around since 1873 is made from the basic ingredients of beer (hops, water, barley, and its very own yeast variety), yet is done so to near perfection. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a pint of Heineken at its source, in the wonderful city of Amsterdam, it is like tasting liquid gold. I have yet to drink a beer that tastes as good and pure as it did there.
Heineken also tops this list because it is accessible. It is a style of beer which all beer drinkers can appreciate, not just the enthusiasts and beer snobs. There are a lot of people who won’t necessarily go for the trapper beers such as Fin du Monde or Westvleteren, and the ports and stouts such as Guinness is not a taste that is for everyone. However, Heineken has its foot in both doors; it is accessible to the entirety of beer drinkers and also has the high quality and brilliant taste of the best beers of the world.

On Friday I got around to brewing my entry for the Iron Brewer Tournament. As mentioned previously,

On Friday I got around to brewing my entry for the Iron Brewer Tournament. As mentioned previously, my the ‘mystery ingredient’ that my bracket drew was 6 tangerines.

As I thought about what to make, I remembered that I’ve had some dark chocolate flavored with orange and tangerize zest, so decided to do something along these lines. I settled on something like an American Brown Ale, with some citrusy hops to compliment the tangerines and some roasted malts to give some chocolate character. I decided to use Amarillo hops because of their prominent citrusy character, and also used cascade from my backyard plants. I will zest and juice all 6 tangerines and add the juice and zest to the fermenter as fermentation starts to slow.

I used my smaller 9 gallon pot to do a 5 gallon batch, and on my new burner boiled off around 3 gallons in an hour! This obviously raised my OG, so I added back .5 gallons of water to get where I needed to be volume and gravity wise.

Below is the recipe and a few pics.

I have a confession to make…there’s something I haven’t been telling you.

I believe in openness and honesty in relationships, so trust me when I say I didn’t mean to keep secrets from you. It’s just that, well…somehow this just slipped my mind. Really. It’s my fault, I promise. Sometimes life just gets busy, and I forget that I haven’t blogged about everything I’m knitting.

I’m sorry, did you think I was talking about something else?

Anyway. So I realised that I hadn’t told you about my Damson shawlette, although it’s something I’ve been working on just about every day. Talk about absent-mindedness. I think I’ve been knitting this thing for a month now. Actually I’m close to binding off. But better late than never, right?

Look at that lovely squishy garter stitch! Can you forgive me now? And yes, it really is that oversaturated, brilliant blue. And I mean oversaturated, dye has been coming off on my fingers.

I guess part of the reason for the brainfluff is that this was kind of a last-minute project—at 10pm the night before I flew to Brisbane I was on Ravelry feverishly trying to find a project to take that was small and simple enough to knit while in conversation, for which I already had (a) the yarn and (b) the needles. Shawlettes make pretty portable knitting and the shape of Damson appealed to me. And it calls for 440 yards of yarn, and I had two skeins of Cascade 220 burning a hole in my stash. Match made in heaven, right?

That’s the second ball, and the rows are getting longer. I mean, yarn-gobblingly long. I wish it wasn’t so difficult to knit with all your fingers crossed.

Yerevan, Armenia, 26 October 2009 – The Cafesjian Center for the Arts is proud to announce that afte

Yerevan, Armenia, 26 October 2009 – The Cafesjian Center for the Arts is proud to announce that after seven years of renovation the Cascade – a former Soviet monument in the center of Yerevan – has been completely transformed into one of the world’s outstanding contemporary art centers. Virtually every aspect of this 13,000 square meter monument has been transformed, and it now houses a Visitor Center, Museum Store, Special Events Auditorium and over 1,100 square meters of exhibition space. The center bears the name of its principal benefactor Gerard L. Cafesjian.

Located at the base of the Cascade is the Cafesjian Sculpture Garden, which presents one of the finest collections of monumental sculpture found anywhere in the world. The Garden’s unobstructed walkways, long vistas, and formal plantings have been specially designed to provide a modern setting for large-scale sculpture by such internationally recognized figures as Fernando Botero, Lynn Chadwick, Jaume Plensa, and Barry Flanagan.
Inspired by the vision of its founder, Mr. Gerard L. Cafesjian, the Center offers a wide variety of exhibitions, many of which are derived from Mr. Cafesjian’s own extensive collection of contemporary art.

Particularly noteworthy is a Persian installation by Dale Chihuly, a leading figure of avante-garde glass art. On exhibition in the same gallery are works by an international array of glass artists, including the noted Czech artist Jaromír Rybák, the Japanese artist Tadashi Sumi, and the Swedish artist Bertil Vallien. A large-screen media projection area provides a unique place for informational videos and for the work of video artists living in Armenia and abroad.

The Gerard L. Cafesjian Collection has one of the largest collections of glass found in any museum, and its collection of work by the Czech glass artists Stanislav Libenský (1921–2002) and Jaroslava Brychtová is undoubtedly one of the finest in the world. The exhibition For Armenia demonstrates the abstract power of Libenský Brychtová’s work, making clear why they are viewed as the single most influential force in the world of glass today.

Also on view in the center is the first major exhibition of original work in Armenia by Arshile Gorky, an artist once described by a critic of the time as a “hero of Abstract Expressionism.” Arshile Gorky: Selections from the Gerard L. Cafesjian Collection exhibits 16 drawings and 7 paintings by the man who would become known as the most monumental presence in American twentieth-century art.

Another gallery in the center demonstrates Gerard L. Cafesjian’s passion for collecting areas lying outside the arena of contemporary art. His varied interests are on continuous display in an exhibition entitled In the Mind of the Collector. On view is an eclectic collection ranging from a 28-foot model of a ship upon which Mr. Cafesjian served in the

Pacific during World War II, to a rare 1906 Model N Ford Runabout, and a working model of a Wabash steam locomotive.

Pattie Boyd: Yesterday and Today lends an intimate view into the lives of George Harrison, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, and Pattie Boyd herself. This unique body of 50 photographs represents 40 years of work and has garnered attention from art critics internationally.

In a gallery specially constructed for large-scale glass work, the center exhibits an installation of Swarovski “Light Socks” by the well-known New York architectural studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Accompanying this piece in the same gallery is the monumental work Sitting Tatoo IV by Jaume Plensa and the glass piece Column #39 by Howard Ben Tre. Immediately adjacent to this gallery is the center’s Special Events Auditorium, which exhibits at its entrance a stunning Dale Chihuly Pergula Ceiling.

A diverse program of visiting lecturers, classic films, concerts, and numerous educational programs for adults and children augment the Center’s vigorous exhibition schedule.

The Cafesjian Center for the Arts Grand Opening Celebration will begin on the evening of Saturday, November 7th, with a spectacular fireworks display near the Cascade monument at 10:30pm. On Sunday, November 8th, the Center invites the public to view all the renovations that have taken place inside the Cascade and to enjoy its outstanding schedule of exhibitions, lecturers, book-signings, and events. For this one day only, the Cafesjian Center for the Arts will be open to the public with no admission fee.

Dear Bill,

I promised you knitting and here it is!

It’s the sweater I’ve been knitting for our younger son–to keep him warm when he’s hunting!

The pattern is Oat Couture’s Port Orford Pullover. I used Cascade 220 superwash wool, US # 5 and #7 needles, and knitted size 46–all this involved a little fiddling with gauge–successful fiddling thank goodness. The dropped shoulder style’s a little weird but it’s roomy, and the sweater fits. C’est fini!

My sweetie husband and I finished cleaning out the house today. The dumpster with all the trash was picked up and dragged off. We also brought a lot of stuff to Goodwill/Salvation Army. Our sailboat gear is packed up for the winter, and we’ve emptied out our Egg Camper. Everything’s “safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin.” We’re pretty happy with ourselves!

Tonight we had brussel sprouts. In honor of this event I’ve written a limerick. It’s called, “Ode to Brussel Sprouts” or alternatively, “Happy 250th Birthday, Guinness!”

Ahem.

For dinner we had brussel sprouts,

About which we both had great doubts.

So we added pancetta!

Were they good? Well, you betcha . . .

(. . . but with cream, melted cheese, and two stouts.)

In other words, if anyone has a good brussel sprouts recipe, we’re ready to try it.

Love!

Momma
