The Wife: While I don’t recall ever watching the original run of Rob Thomas’ Cupid back

The Wife:

While I don’t recall ever watching the original run of Rob Thomas’ Cupid back in 1998 with Paula Marshall and Jeremy Piven, I admit that I am the kind of person who would be drawn to such a premise. I love Greco-Roman mythology and I enjoy seeing modern adaptations and spins on it, and offering my “I’m friends with a Classics professor so I totally know what I’m talking about” judgments on whether or not those adaptations succeed. (Although the CW’s Valentine, about Greek gods living in L.A., just didn’t seem to pique any level of interest in me at all. Nor in anyone else, apparently.) So being that I don’t recall ever watching Cupid in the 90s – which I realize now was probably because it was airing on Saturday nights, which just means ABC wanted it dead from the beginning and that I was also probably too busy going to sleepovers, being dared to call boys I liked and read them bedtime stories, to tune in – I figured I would give the reboot a chance.

And you know what? That show totally doesn’t suck.

The generosity accorded to Rob Thomas to reboot his formerly failed series by ABC, however, was not as generous in its feelings toward this show as I am. The original run of the series produced 15 episodes, and aired 14. This run was only 7 episodes, intended as a try-out for fall, because that’s how television producers work these days. ABC killed a few great things this year, one of which might rhyme with “Smushing Lazies,” and I think that left viewers a little mistrustful of anything new ABC had planned to debut in the spring. In the Motherhood, while admittedly not great, was interesting simply for the fact that it was a female-led show about an issue that nearly every woman on the planet can relate to (if she isn’t currently a mommy, she certainly had one once), and had a lot of potential to grow and further explore the current parenting climate (which in the last ten years has switched to the kind of stay-at-home-and-do-everything-right-and-organic-and-be-totally-involved-and-honest-with-your-kids idea embraced by Jessica St. Claire’s character) in relationship to other models (the working mom, the cool mom who raised her kids counter to any advice and everything turned out just fine). But it never quite found its footing and so failed its try-out. Better Off Ted is lucky its quirky mcquirkfest survived. Cupid should have.

Bobby Cannavale: Right on the mark as Cupid.

Why am I so gung-ho about this show? For one, I think Thomas found the right lead in Bobby Cannavale and was smart to move the show from Chicago to New York. Cannavale is good-looking in an Italian Mama’s Boy sort of way, and incredibly affable. It makes perfect sense that he would be the kind of person strangers would invite into their lives if he offered to help them, and it makes perfect sense that he’s the kind of person clever enough to manipulate social situations to facilitate his matchmaking. In short, if Bobby Cannavale asked me to fly to NYC from New Orleans to cater a party as his Trevor Pierce (renamed from the original Trevor Hale) did in one episode where he reunited a Cajun caterer with her high school Iraqi war vet sweetheart, I probably would. As for the move from Chicago to NYC, NYC is often a space that invites fantasy in many popular stories. I’ll name only one example here that should serve as the paramount one: Miracle on 54th Street. It’s a city with its own mythology and a long history of being a dreammaking place: for immigrants, for actors, dancers and musicians, for artists and also for writers. It’s also a city in which people move and mingle with others numerous times a day, but promotes the isolation of modernity in that while its denizens inhabit mutual spaces, they don’t often connect with each other. I buy it as a place a god would try to turn into matchmaking central, especially because his therapist’s single’s groups prove to be an integral part of how the show’s main and peripheral characters, and how they are all trying to break away from the isolation of modernity and connect with others. There was talk in the production process that Cupid would relocate to Los Angeles, and while Francesca Lia Block has convinced me that L.A. can be a space of magical realism, I don’t think it would have worked nearly as well as New York did.

Furthermore, I like the idea of a show that believes in the concept of true love. We live in an age where the CW exploits people’s relationship issues on national television with Hitched or Ditched, where we look at the tabloids every day to see if John & Kate are going to fall the fuck apart (uh . . . yeah, that’s probably going to happen since the couple has a very special “announcement” pending; and I hate that I don’t watch that show and know about this), and where hookups have somehow replaced dating. We all know that the divorce rate is high, and we all know that my home state has leveraged a terrible and oppressive measure against its non-heterosexual residents that bar them from even daring to challenge that statistic with their same-sex relationships. When I look at the divorce rate and the disappearance of date culture, it seems like a good number of us have given up even trying to sustain a partnership; that we prefer to be alone, save for a brief interaction every now and again that we don’t have to put any further energy into. While I wouldn’t say that having a life partner is right for everyone, I certainly like having someone to watch TV with every day. It makes me feel like this big, giant world is less lonely. That isolation of modernity thing I was talking about? Having someone to go through life with certainly makes me feel less isolated.

So when I see so much negativity toward relationships in the reality television world and in the real actual human world, I can’t help but be smitten by a scripted show that tries to remind us of the good parts of being in a relationship with someone, and how fun it can be to take that plunge. Cupid may only be a string of meet-cutes, but it’s also about love overcoming obstacles. None of the matches Cannavale’s Cupid makes in the 7-episode run are easily procured, and, somehow, through his crazy/divine providence, he is able to unite these couples in the promise of everlasting love. I’ve already mentioned the Cajun caterer and the Iraq veteran, which came to a bittersweet ending as the vet announces that he’s getting stop-lossed and sent back for a third tour of duty, something he planned to avoid by running away to Canada and never coming back – only to change his mind and do his tour of duty, knowing that if he lived, his Cajun caterer would be worth coming home to in order to live out their days under the willow trees in their hometown in Louisiana.

But perhaps my favorite of these divine matches came in the final episode, featuring adorable Broadway ingénue Kerry Butler as a working-class masseuse from South Boston in love with a man above her station (whom she broke up with because he never let her meet his family because of her wicked pissah of an accent). Cupid’s therapist, Claire, tries to find out his origin by hiring a linguist (one of her patients, as well) to listen to him speak and determine his origins. The “using linguistics to discover Trevor’s origins” plot was recycled from the show’s first incarnation, but the My Fair Lady angle was entirely new to this version of the series. But Cupid performs a bait-and-switch, setting up Kerry Butler with illocution lessons in exchange for massages, during which she forms a friendship with the linguist over several delightful My Fair Lady-esque diction lessons. Butler’s character is almost ready to give up, and declares that it doesn’t feel right to her to hide herself just to impress a guy, at which point her linguistics tutor reveals that he, himself, has been lying for most of his life. He, too, is from South Boston, but wasn’t taken seriously on his first day at Princeton because of his accent and worked very hard to eliminate all traces of his working-class roots from his speech. After sending Kerry off to meet with her ex at a fancy, uptown party, Trevor realizes in talking to the linguist that, perhaps, he’s been guiding Miss Butler toward the wrong beau and disguises the linguist as a waiter to crash the party and tell Kerry how he feels. After making a scene in which Butler’s intended’s parents reprimand “the help” for being so clumsy, Kerry throws off the upper-class accent she’s worked so hard for and embraces who she really is, as well as the Henry Higgins who reminded her of that.

If I had one complaint about Cupid, it would be that Sarah Paulson’s Dr. Claire McCrae never quite felt real enough – and not for Paulson’s lack of trying. She’s a great actress, with a lot of range, and if you want to see how great she can be, please watch her arc as a Pinkerton on Deadwood and her completely stunning comic performance in Peyton Reed’s 1960s screwball romance send up, Down with Love, in which you will also be treated to Ewan McGregor’s delightfully Ewan McGregor-y Southern accent. Paulson never got to break through her material here, and always seemed too stiff to fit into this world, which is only justifiable in the fact that her awkwardness in the role highlighted the irony that she, single and totally uncomfortable with people, should be in charge of teaching people how to find love through commonality. I think, if the show had gotten more of a chance, Claire would have eventually felt more real as her own walls started to break down and we learned as much about her as she does about Trevor Pierce.

I’ll miss this show, and I’m sad that we live in a world that’s unaccepting of its existence. But I’ll cherish that “My Fair Massuese” episode, if only because linguists are awesome and the following line is one of the best things I’ve heard on television recently:

“Nothing says ‘Thank You’ like the phonetic alphabet on cupcakes!” – Kerry Butler

The Husband:

A few points of interest:

1.) I adore Sarah Paulson, but between this and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, she’s gaining quite a few detractors. She’s not to the point of being an absolute show-killer just yet, but her dedication to her craft, which allows her to make very interesting decisions with very intense and sometimes unlikable characters, tends to give her a bad wrap, at least on television. But I can assure you that she’s one of the most versatile actresses of her generation, including her deeply strange performance that I saw in 2005’ Broadway production of The Glass Menagerie, also starring Jessica Lange, Christian Slater and Josh Lucas.

2.) I started noticing this right around the time that Kidnapped, Six Degrees, The Black Donnellys and 3 lbs. were all canceled in the same television season, in that unless a show was a Law & Order or a CSI, any show that filmed in New York was about 90% guaranteed to be canceled. And this year, that trend came back in a big way. With no exception this year, no show that premiered in the 2008-2009 television season and was shot (not just set) in New York was renewed for another season. (And Castle doesn’t count, because it’s shot in L.A.) This would include Life on Mars, The Unusuals and now Cupid. (And last year’s Lipstick Jungle, which moved on into this year, couldn’t survive either. But hell, at least it got a second season unlike the majorly similar Cashmere Mafia.) A part of me wants to say it’s the distancing location that seems to turn many non-New York viewers off, as if these shows take place in a world far too unlike the viewers’ that it simply doesn’t pique their interest. But, more than anything, it’s the fact that it’s so goddamned expensive to shoot in NYC, so even when ratings are doing okay, the networks use the expenses as an excuse to shut down production. I’m amazed Gossip Girl got renewed for a third season, since the ratings are so abysmal, but it’s definitely a pop cultural flagship for the network, so canceling it would just make the CW lose more viewers.

<img title="Left of the Dial" src="http://a.abc.com/media/primetime/cupid/images/season/1/episodes/105/gallery/02.jpg" alt="A book recommendation for ANYONE who liked the Left of the Dial episode of Cupid: Rob Sheffields Love Is a Mix Tape.
3.) While I loved almost every episode of this show, my favorite, simply from a dramatic perspective, was “Left of the Dial,” in which a down-on-his-luck radio deejay tracks down his favorite caller and starts a relationship with her and her two children. It was the sweetest, least negative and most realistic episode of Cupid’s altogether too short season, and it’s a shame that not enough people stuck around to even watch the episode.

Allekirjoittaneen täytyy tehdä tunnustus: Hänen elämässään on kaksi eri populaarikulttuurin haaraa, joita molempia hän rakastaa ja jotka eivät tunnu sopivan yhteen sitten mitenkään: hömpäksi mielletyt sinkkunaisille suunnatut tv-sarjat sekä black metal, metallimusiikin ideologisin ja rankin alalaji. Kontrasti on melkoinen, vai mitä sanotte?

Sarjat: Sinkkuelämää, Gossip Girl, Cashmere Mafia, Lipstick Jungle, Dirty Sexy Money.

Seuraavien kirjailijoiden tuotanto: Marian Keyes, Helen Fielding, Candace Bushnell, Lauren Weisberg, Sophie Kinsella, Cecelia Ahern, Jane Green.

Dokumenteista kannattaa tarkistaa esimerkiksi Once Upon a Time in Norway.

Why is it that women are portrayed only as wives and mothers? Until recently, that was the only role

Why is it that women are portrayed only as wives and mothers? Until recently, that was the only role appropriate for them. God forbid that a wife actually speaks her mind or anything! In the past, it’s the woman who is depicted as the “damsel in distress” who needs a man to come to her rescue every single time!

Case in point: Everybody Loves Raymond

Marie is the overbearing mother-in-law who always has something to say about housewife, Debra. Debra can never do anything right in Marie’s eyes. Her cooking abilities lack, she cannot keep a house clean or keep her kids under control. Their relationship is one that is stereotypically described as a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law bond. That mother-in-laws are evil and are only interested in their son and that no woman is ever good enough. What’s more, Ray never seems to do anything wrong and is constantly babied by his mom. Anything that goes wrong is always Debra’s fault (even if its something as uncontrollable as Ray getting sick). As funny as the show is, to analyze it in this light makes it disgusting that women are still subjected to these roles.

By having stuff like this on TV it makes it ok for this patriarchal dominance to occur in real life. It makes it seem like something “natural” that we all have to or SHOULD accept. But of course, most of the producers, writers, directors, media corporation owners are all men. It’s a patriarchal world out there and at this point it doesn’t look like it will be lightening up anytime soon

Case in point: Cashmere Mafia

They tried to make us believe that women can hold high-powered jobs and rule the world or whatever. But if we take a closer look, it seems almost like a comical poke at the female wish to have equality. One of the show’s characters portrayed by Lucy Liu receives a Presidential position at her magazine company. Sure she worked hard to get this position, but the reality of the situation comes out when the person she out-beats was a guy. This guy made sure it was difficult for her to run the show. He didn’t believe she could do it (or maybe he did but still wanted to get the position, even though he was less qualified). He made it very difficult for her to get idea’s passed, to get her work done etc all because of the mentality that most men grow up with that states “we are superior to women and we should not be answering to them”.

It’s sad really, that women are constantly just viewed as objects. But I’m sure we don’t make it easier on ourselves in the manner that we dress or the constant “damsel in distress” outlook that we grow up with. The belief that men like women who are stupid, who don’t speak their own mind or who are dependant on a man for their material needs to be satisfied. Sure we can talk about reform, but the reality is that until we start taking ourselves seriously and working together as a gender, men will not take us seriously and will continue to view us as objects to be controlled.

I had never thought about how older women were portrayed in the media before reading chapter 36 of the Media Literacy book.

In Bewitched, Endora is the older woman of the series. She is Samantha’s mother and is also a witch. Her character does not approve of Samantha’s husband, Darrin, nor does she approve of the fact that Samantha is attempting to live a “mortal” life. In the show Endora is portrayed as being ecce2ntric and her “grotesque by comparison” to her daughter. Her clothing is strange, as well as her choice of makeup and especially her mannerisms. A big thing that this section of the chapter examines is the fact that men are not supposed to be attracted to Endora, she is the mother figure, the older woman, the crazy uninhibited older woman.

Its remarkable how much women’s roles have changed throughout the past 50 years. Women are now prominent figures in many previously male dominated careers. Although we are continuously making huge strides in women’s rights throughout the world, television shows and movies continuously depict women in stereotypical “women’s roles”. Family oriented TV shows and movies continuously show the mother in the kitchen, driving kids around, etc. While it is up to the man to make the money and provide for the family.

When women are portrayed as career oriented and driven, they are often ostracized. Shows like Lipstick Jungle and Cashmere Mafia are about women in business with strong and prosperous careers. However, while they succeed in their careers, they are often depicted in dysfunctional relationships, or unable to have a relationship. The reason for these dysfunctional relationships is often because the men (or women) in the relationship feel as though the career woman is too work oriented. Women are not allowed to put their career’s first. Women are expected to put their families and significant others before their careers. When a woman does put her career first, she is seen as different and abnormal.

In chapter 36 the character of Samantha is examined in respect to her role as the lead of the show as well as a woman within the show. For example, she is a witch and therefore could easily use her magical abilities to clean the house in a second. Although she has this ability, Samantha decides to perform these household chores the “mortal way”, believing this is what the “typical mortal woman” would do. Samantha also tries not to use her natural magical gifts, as Darrin, her husband, does not like it. Darrin wants to be a normal family and for Samantha to perform her normal matronly duties. She is prescribing to the ideal that the man is the head of the household, and he expects certain things.

Bewitched allowed its female viewers to really think about their prescribed place within the family. It allowed these women to, for 30 minutes a day, live outside of their typical life. Thankfully women today no longer need this television escape, they can live independent lives.

http://www.serieina.com/

http://www.serieina.com/

¿A qué estaís esperando?

The Melody Bar. The Court Tavern. Plum Street Pub. My college years were filled with late nights and local rock. The Court Tavern was my favorite place in town, but I probably spent the most time watching bands at The Budapest Cocktail Lounge. At the end of school, my husband-to-be Jonathan Andrew played in a band called The Angry Monsters. The Monsters played with all the great bands in town and I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time immersed in New Brunswick rock.

Members of a few of these bands had a reunion show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ on Saturday night.

First up was the female-fronted quartet The Mellowtraumatics, a late-90s band which boasted two future Jersey rock powerhouses. Front-chick and rock vixen Christina Alessi would go on to greater success with Hoboken-based combo Hey Tiger, who self-released the successful debut September and subsequently opened for Bon Jovi at Giants Stadium (which I photographed – woo hoo!). After the break-up of The Mellowtraumatics, guitarist and riffmaster Pete Marceau went on to join Hero Pattern and prove to be the missing piece this promising band needed in order to take the next step – a number of well-received indie releases and a handful of get-in-the-van tours across the country. The reunited-for-one-night-only band closed their set of funky and atmospheric tunes with their classic “Stalker”, much to the delight of the Mellowtraumaniacs in attendance.

The second act of the night were Manalapan natives Ben Trovato, who formed in high school in the late 1990s aand hadn’t performed together for nearly a decade. On Saturday night, they were back to their old tricks- frequent tempo chances, spastic riffing, and heart-on-their-sleeves high school poetry. The band is fronted by the multi-talented Val Emmich, who is once again releasing music independently after Slow Down Kid, his major-label debut on Sony Records in 2004. Emmich can also be seen on the small screen on shows such as Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, and Cashmere Mafia. Ben’s set was the truest time capsule of the night; hearing them brought me back to late nights at the Budapest Lounge, when they played with such New Brunswick luminaries as The Angry Monsters, The Rosemary Pure, and frequent guests from DC, Anne Summers.

Third out of the gate was the band who organized the event, Small AM. Formed in Sparta, NJ in the late 1990s under the name Wisemaster Joshu, the band evolved from a jangly, rootsy quintet into a double-guitar rock powerhouse, taking equal doses from international supergroup Radiohead and local legends Prosolar Mechanics. After several years gigging on the local scene, Small AM released their self-titled full-length debut in 2002 on local label Childlike Records. Reuniting for the first time in 5+ years were vocalist/guitarists Jim Fitzgerald and Damien Musto, bassist Jim Lovegrove, and drummer Ralph Capasso. Opening the set with standout “Heather”, the band tore through the majority of their self-titled album, including a bruising rendition of “Anyway”, a few unreleased numbers from a never-completed follow up, and an outstanding new song entitled “The Starting Line”. They ended with the perennial set-closer “Perfect Day”, repeating the signature closing riff until band and crowd alike were sated.

Closing the night was the reunited original lineup of Jersey mainstays The Milwaukees. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of their classic breakthrough record Missile Command, Milwaukee-in-Chief Dylan Clark was joined by the original rhythm section of bassist Dave “Posty” Post and drummer Scott Pohlman. The band tore through songs from their early period with the energy and passion for which they’ve been known throughout the local scene for the last decade plus.

Vi também a ÓTIMA “The Big Bang Theory”, “Secret Diary Of A Call Girl” e “How I Met You Mother”, que ainda estou terminando. As próximas serão: “October Road” e “Cashmere Mafia”. Ah, viram “Chuck”? Triste. Quero “Samantha Who?”, quero “Greek”, quero MAIS!

* Estou ouvindo bastante esses CDs aí:

Kings Of Leon – Only by the Night.
Keyshia Cole – A Different Me
Bethany Joy Lenz – The Collection
Kate Voegele – Don’t Look Away

E as trilhas de “One Tree Hill”, é claaaaaro!

My support of Lipstick Jungle came about in a very odd fashion. In the early months of 2008, when NBC debuted this show opposite ABC’s Cashmere Mafia, I thought for sure that Cashmere was going to come out on top.

Lipstick...?

Cashmere had Lucy Liu, Miranda Otto, and the characters and intial plot points seemed to be much more interesting and unique. In fact, I tuned into ABC to catch the pilot of the show. Cashmere also had a jump over Lipstick, by debuting in early January, while Lipstick did not start airing until February.

... or Cashmere? The two do NOT mix.

Of course, ABC’s version of the “powerful women in NYC having professional and romatic lives”-show was summarily cancelled after only seven episodes (episodes that weren’t incredibly engaging). Lipstick survived – sort of. It, like Cashmere Mafia, only got seven episodes during its first season.

Lipstick, however, came back for a second crack at bat. I happened upon the “season” 2 premiere, and was hooked. Interesting characters, solid performances, and despite the presence of fashion and money, not as self-interested as Sex and the City. These women seem relatively real. Which is bizarre. Because it’s American television. Moreover, the men in their lives are real too. That, in combination, is extremely bizarre.

Imagine my discontent last night, when at the end of another superb episode, I was greeted with a montage from the series, heralding potentially the series finale of the show. Of course, NBC had kind-of-sort-of announced its end in the fall, but the reality of it came as a shock to this freshly-minted Lipstick addict.

So, with a heavy heart, we must embrace the end. Or must we?

Brooke Shields had gone on record from the beginning of the “cancellation”, proclaiming that it wasn’t over yet. Of course, nobody really believed her. I, for one, despite my respect for Shields, thought her more than simply optimistic, like the final spasms of a headless chicken running about screaming, “I’m alive!” (Which is a feat for even a chicken with a head.)

But have the tables turned? At this month’s TCA (Television Critics’ Association) panel, NBC has said that it has not yet given Lipstick Jungle a death sentence.

NBC-Universal president Jeff Zucker and Entertainment co-chair Ben Silverman decided to wait in the wings, and send Angela Bromstad out to face the music of the ravenous reporters. Rather than announce the series’ end, Bromstad actually said that they had not yet reached a decision to cancel the show.

“There’s an affinity and appreciation for those shows and not something I would cavalierly toss aside even if they weren’t meeting expectations. We can’t stop striving for that but we won’t replace shows beloved by fans,” she said. Minutes earlier, however, she told journos gathered at TCA: “We live in a world we have to have both (quality and ratings). We have to have ratings.” -Bromstad

So what does this mean? On one hand, the season finale brought us a montage. That’s bad news. On the other hand, Bromstad has only recently been upped to head of the NBC scripted division. Before, as part of her previous duties, she had a role in developing Lipstick Jungle. Significant? Perhaps.

It seems to me that if Lipstick was axed, it would be definitely axed. The fact is, in its potentially final days, it’s picking up notice and viewers. (even if these viewers find the show online or on DVR or demand) It still may very well be cancelled. But let’s be honest:

NBC is historically the place for shows that do not get the ratings in the early years. Cheers? Seinfeld? Yeah… I thought so. 30 Rock, the celebrated show of the entire year, still isn’t getting the ratings it deserves.

Lipstick Jungle deserves a fair shot. Despite having an incredibly short first season, and being smack dab in the tumult of the writer’s strike, the show gathered an impressive amount of momentum and has inspired a small, but growing, loyal fan base. And who doesn’t enjoy brand loyalty? (Perhaps the networks, judging by some of the decisions.)

I get it. Ratings. n. That which keeps a television network afloat.

I can’t help but hope that Bromstad (and NBC) meant what she said about quality, not just for the sake of Lipstick Jungle or NBC, but for scripted television in general. We must find a better way.

Can’t help but think about that comment at the Globes last weekend – yes, ratings, box office numbers, MONEY is important, but there’s something to be said for doing something because there’s a good story to be told, and a group of people who want to tell it.

“I’ve bought the DVD of Kashmir Mafia,” Steven told me. I nodded vaguely. A film about separatist fighters in the disputed Himalayan region, by the sounds of it. An unusual choice, for sure, but possibly interesting.

“It’s by Darren Star,” he explained. That seemed a little odd. A bit of a departure for the Starmeister after Sex & The City.

My eyes fell on the box. It was spelt slightly differently to how I’d imagined.

“Cashmere Mafia” to be precise. A TV show about four women in New York. Not such a departure after all.
