Usually this is a good play unless you can count cards and know that the deck is not rich in 10 value cards

Surrendering

“Surrendering” lets the player discard his initial deal. If the player doesn’t think his hand will win, he says “surrender” before he chooses to hit or stand. This move will cost him half his bet.
