As I said in my post “Surplus“ our modern societies have enormous surpluses, and yet we have still managed to make a pigs ear of it all. And it is because we have let the lunatics run the asylum. Or more specifically, we have let the gamblers free rein to gamble with our economies and with our money.

It is like giving crack to an addict, they will snort it up until it kills them. Ohh – and us at the same time, in case you haven’t noticed.

Why would the serious gamblers bother gambling at a casino? The game is rigged and frankly that’s penny-ante chump change anyway. If they can gamble on the worlds financial markets, that’s where the really serious money is, trillions of dollars of it. What’s more, that is a game where they can get to set it all up and rig it so that they are the House, they make the rules and can guarantee their cut. Can we say Goldman Sachs anyone? Their preferred casino town isn’t Las Vegas, its Wall Street and City of London.

So, we have addicts controlling our lives and livelihoods. You know what, that’s not too smart! We are going to have to find a solution to this because as we are finally starting to see, we can’t afford not to.

If there was money to be made by cheating the system, then these are exactly the people who have the psychological makeup to want to try to.

All of that is almost entirely a smokescreen of course. Just because these types may wear suits and ties and work on Wall Street doesn’t mean they too aren’t dangerous, they most certainly are. They are not constrained by rational evaluations of risk like the rest of us and they have no compunctions about systematically undermining the system if they can get theirs. People addicted to money are junkies and will do anything to get their fix. It would be an interesting exercise to test all the senior financial executive for psychopathic personality traits. Being a psychopath doesn’t inherently mean you want to kill people and eat their brains, but it does mean they will have little to no sympathy or empathy for anyone else. It is all about them. So that leaves us with the quandary of how to structure the system, the economy and our society in order to best manage this issue and mitigate any damage. This isn’t an issue that is going to go away, it is build into our nature and indeed can have some positive advantages. The net loss was $39.5 million, or -$0.08 EPS. The good news is that Thomson Reuters was at -$0.09 EPS.  The 70% revenue jump was to $500.3 million, but that was short of Thomson Reuters figures of about $520 million.  The revenue gain was due to the opening of City of Dreams in June 2009.

The company said that its estimated share of gross gaming revenue in Macau was approximately 17% in the third quarter.  The CEO further noted, “…. It is important to note that our gross gaming revenue market share has been achieved with player rebate rates at City of Dreams set at a level that is compliant with the announced commission cap legislation…. Our grind mass market business has demonstrated sequential volume improvements across the reporting quarter and this growth trend has continued into the fourth quarter of this year. We have not yet reached our full potential in this segment and the recent opening of the Grand Hyatt Macau is now having a positive impact on performance….”

Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS) is on deck for its overseas asset IPO soon.  The company did confirm that it will resume construction in January on massive gambling resort.  The company had suspended development because of funding and operations elsewhere.

Las Vegas Sands started offering the IPO out on Monday and the hope is to raise some $3.3 billion from the deal.  Of that, about $500 million will be used for restarting the construction.  The company will also pay down a large chunk of debt.  This IPO follows a very similar IPO path already seen by Wynn Resorts Ltd. (NASDAQ: WYNN).

Because of Wynn’s success, it seems that even MGM Mirage (NYSE: MGM) may get in on the Asian asset IPO game.  What is still true is that the opportunities are huge for Macau and those companies operating there can realize significant rewards.  But this is not without risk and not without regulation at the local level.

cool parts.  As a generally cynical person, I thought I would be turned off of Venice by it’s weird, expensive time capsule of yesteryear-ness and the pervasive sense of decadence that ignores all the serious problems that are literally coming up through the floorboards and paving stones of the city.  But once I saw the Grand Canal and heard the cutely quiet bustle of a city without cars, I realized how freaking dumb it was to fight this Venice’s undeniable charm.

The Venetians have mastered decadence in a way I thought only 18th century French kings could achieve.  Everything there is beautiful!  And we had a pretty decadent weekend: a European casino, the opera, and non-house wine!  (No one in Venice is poor enough to order house wine, so they don’t even offer it).  Obviously we also went to see a lot of famous stuff you’ve already heard of and that I won’t waste your time with.  Except did you know that the Bellini was invented in Venice?  I took an unofficial Bellini tour through Venice…

As the most risk-averse person I know,  I planned on going along as moral support more than a gambler for the casino adventure.  Except did you know that Europeans gamble in deathly silence?  No flashing lights, no alcohol, no talking.  Unlike Vegas, pissing away your money over card games is apparently no laughing matter here.  To pass the time I bet (and promptly lost) 5 euros at a slot machine.  I didn’t really take to gambling, but I did take to people-watching in one of the most hilariously sterile settings I’ve seen here!  I’d have a picture for you to capture this alien world, but I think the flash would have blinded the slot machine zombies.

In a turn both classy and trashy, we saw the Cliffs Notes version of Verdi’s “La Traviata.”  Instead of the whole 4 hour commitment, we saw an abbreviated performance in an old guild building.  Sometimes it didn’t feel abbreviated.  Once you adjust to the fact that you’ve signed yourself up for a few hours of chubby, profusely sweaty people bludgeoning you with the strength of their voices, it’s actually pretty cool to watch the story and see if you can pick out some recognizable phrases and words in their old-timey Italian!

Highlight/Lowlight of the trip: Someone on our trip jumped into the Grand Canal!  At the time this was uproariously hilarious, unbelievable, and totally worth the 5 euros I contributed to the reward pot.  Frankly, I didn’t think she’d do it.  The water in Venice is notoriously disgusting (a working port close by and hundreds of years of sludge and pollution aren’t a recipe for cleanliness), plus you could land on something sharp, and it’s cold outside.  If I’d been her, I would have backed out at the last minute – but that’s why I’m the most risk-averse person I know.  Unfortunately, it turns out that swimming in the canals is actually illegal.  So now we all get to make a short film about the consequences of reckless behavior abroad as punishment for our part in this (now a lot less funny) escapade.  Stay tuned for my directorial/screenwriting/acting debut!

In our most recent election, the people of Ohio spoke.  In 2011, Cincinnati, along with Columbus, Cleveland and Toledo will be getting a casino.  Past proposals for casinos have been turned down by conservative Ohio voters, but this one gave enough incentive to pass.  There was plenty of advertising going both ways, but in the end, I believe the opportunity to funnel money into the economy drove people to say Yes on the issue.
