The Way We Were.

Some memories last forever

Šį filmą žiūrėjau dėl to, jog juo vienoje serijoje labai žavėjosi Sex and the City merginos.

The Godfather.

All the power on earth can’t change destiny

Cassandra’s Dream.

Every dream has its price.

Juk kiekvienas norėtumėm turėti turtingą dėdę Semą, kuris įgyvendintų mūsų svajones? Tačiau kiek būtume pasiryžę sumokėt už jas? Šis filmas man patiko dėl savo dostojevsiškumo.

SUEÑOS Y DELITOS (“Cassandra’s dream”), Estados Unidos y Reino Unido, 2007. Dirección y guión: Woody Allen. Fotografía: Vilmos Zsigmond. Música: Philip Glass. Edición: Alisa Lepselter. Diseño de producción: Maria Djurkovic.

The internet has been a blessing and a curse to the world of film criticism. The bad side is that everyone’s a critic. The good side is, we’re no longer limited to the opinions of those able to get their words in print. Trust me, just because you’re writing film reviews for a major newspaper doesn’t mean you know a damn thing about film.

The perfect example: I had a friend who ended up being hired to write additional film critiques for a major U.S. city paper. Though a very sweet man, he knew nothing of film. Not its history, not its art, not its technique. He didn’t even understand the concept of genre. His taste in film was limited to the bizarre and offbeat. Anything else was trash. Some of the greatest films to be released in the years he was a staff film writer were met with vast amounts of ignorance and negative “stay away” comments. Understand, there wasn’t a malicious bone in this man’s body. However, what he understood of film could be balanced on the head of a pin. We who knew him and considered him our friend (and still do) cringed weekly at reading his reviews. He was hired by the paper because he was good at writing critiques of literature, something he actually did know something about as he was, himself, a novelist. And a damn good one. But a film critic? Not on his best day.

So how many truly wonderful films were greeted with less than stellar attendance due to this man’s negative reviews and complete misunderstanding of the medium and the intentions of the artists working in it? Quite a few, I’d venture to guess.

On my journey as a film lover and film maker, I’ve run across some truly surprising and distressing comments. Some made by “professional” critics, others by bloggers and various online movie sites of varying degrees of popularity.

Let’s start with Peter Rainer, film critic for the Christian Science Monitor. His review of the new movie MOON begins with this comment:

There are those who think “2001″ is the greatest movie ever made, and then there are those of us who think it’s the greatest boring movie ever made.

To think that a major film critic in this day and age can’t even see the value of a film like Kubrick’s 2001. Sure, it’s all a matter of taste. Or is it? I’ll be honest, I could never trust a critic who would write something like this. I couldn’t trust the man’s basic understanding of filmmaking and storytelling. For 2001 not to be your cup of tea is one thing, but to devalue it and not seem to appreciate its merits and place in history or to recognize its great artistry… Aw, hell, I can’t respect anyone who writes about film for a living who thinks 2001 is boring. Sorry, Peter, but I just don’t trust that you know of what you write.

And speaking of 2001, here’s critic Kyle Smith of New York Post fame suggesting WATCHMEN is similar to the films of Stanley Kubrick in depth and artistry:

Director Zack Snyder’s cerebral, scintillating follow-up to “300″ seems, to even a weary filmgoer’s eye, as fresh and magnificent in sound and vision as “2001″ must have seemed in 1968, yet in its eagerness to argue with itself, it resembles “A Clockwork Orange. Like those Stanley Kubrick films – it is also in part a parody of “Dr. Strangelove” – it transforms each moment into a tableau with great, uncompromising concentration. The effect is an almost airless gloom, but the film is also exhilarating in breadth and depth.

I suppose I should simply be happy Mr. Smith even knows the films of Stanley Kubrick and can list some of them off in a positive light.

Or how about this paragraph recently culled from online pages of Rogue Cinema:

If you want to call me lazy, so be it, but I personally prefer films that actually spell everything out at some point during the story rather than leaving me to wonder about it. I like many people, don’t watch films to think. I watch films to get away from all the thinking I have to do when I’m not watching films. When a film leaves me wondering at the end, I feel unsatisfied, like the story wasn’t completely told. It’s kinda like reading a whole mystery novel and then finding out that the last ten pages are missing. It’s not the viewer’s job to finish the story in their head. It’s the film’s job to tell the story in a complete way, or at least, if it’s not going to give a complete explanation, give enough of one so that it’s easy for the viewer to piece it together. Now I know there are some people out there who like to get deep and analyze everything in a plot in order to come to their own conclusions, but I would hazard to say that those types are in the minority.

Really? REALLY? You don’t like movies that require thought? This “reviewer” actually states that he prefers to have everything spelled out for him. Maybe I’m in the minority when I say that I find this kind of thinking to be quite astounding in all the worst ways. I guess this is how films like CRASH win Academy Awards and tons of accolades. And CRASH is one of the better films to explain everything to the audience as if they weren’t really all that smart. Hey, at least it’s trying to be a smart film with something to say. Unlike 90% of what hits the big screens showing studio-fare. I guess it’s a scary proposition to make a film that requires true thought and participation on the part of the audience in an age where critics think 2001 is boring and films are meant to be nothing more than an escape from using one’s brain.

I gotta tell you, though, that’s not how I was raised. Sure, we had silly, mindless films when I was younger, too (I’m 45 now, not quite ancient yet), but we were inundated with films that relished ambiguity, promoted conversation, assumed the audience contained intelligent beings who actually liked using their brains and had the ability to do so.

Even famed critic Roger Ebert makes assumptions about how film should be made and what film should be. Here’s a comment he made about Woody Allen’s CASSANDRA’S DREAM:

The identical premise is used in Sidney Lumet’s “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead,” which is like a master class in how Allen goes wrong.

A master class? Okay… I suppose Mr. Ebert never noticed that Mr. Allen IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT KND OF STORYTELLER AND FILMMAKER THAN MR. LUMET? Both have made great films and both have made films that some would say were not among their best, but neither should be compared to the other with the notion that one is right, the other wrong. There are no rules, no guidelines to filmmaking. I know people like to suggest that there are, but there aren’t. You start out with a blank piece of paper and move forward from there. Film is still, essentially, in its infancy. There should be no restrictions placed on the artist’s imagination or the ability of the audience to decide which filmmaker and films move them/effect them. There is no “master class”. And Mr. Allen didn’t “go wrong.” He simply made a Woody Allen film.

Or how about critic Sean Smith’s embarrassing Newsweek article about M. Night Shyamalan? In it Smith quotes, and appears to support, comments made by the producers he interviewed in which they seem to denounce artistic freedom as if it were the devil:

The success of “The Sixth Sense” gave [Shayamalan] total creative autonomy, and he has isolated himself in Pennsylvania, where all his movies are made. “When someone is given total artistic freedom,” says one blockbuster producer, “the result is usually bad.”

Later in the same article, Mr. Smith continues:

The solution, most suggest, is for [Shayamalan] to break out of his self-imposed cocoon. “The smaller you make your world, the less of an artist you can really be,” says an indie exec. “Look at Stanley Kubrick. If you see ‘Eyes Wide Shut,’ it’s clear he hadn’t left the house in 20 years.”

Well, with this school of thought engaging the minds of the masses, it may take a while for Mr. Smith and the world at large to recognize the cinematic masterpiece that is EYES WIDE SHUT. Yeah, I know, lots of people hated that film. But truthfully, I have little respect for those who dismiss the film as garbage. Again, personal taste is one thing, but I have little faith in many people’s ability to recognize daring, groundbreaking and/or important cinema when it’s staring them in the face.

“The smaller you make your world, the less of an artist you can really be…”

I love that this indie-exec has decided what constitutes an artist and art. I love that he or she has also decided that Shyamalan’s choice to live in Philadelphia is making Shyamalan’s world “smaller.” As if Los Angeles were the center of the universe and a solid reflection of the “real” world. This sad way of thinking is only made more distressing by the critic who used these quotes to support his narrow argument.

Take film critic Desson Thomson’s comments from his review of Francis Ford Coppola’s YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH in the Washington Post:

Coppola proves that even the best of our film artists can lose sight of what this medium is all about: entertaining, enlightening and including its audience.

Again, I am (almost) struck dumb by the assumption on the part of so many critics as to what film is and is not supposed to be. Really, Mr. Thomson, is that what the medium is all about? Thanks for enlightening me. And I’m sure for enlightening Mr. Coppola, who obviously needs to sit down and take a film class from you! And did it ever occur to you that maybe this film did achieve all of these things for some other members of the audience? Perhaps the less narrow-minded?

And this is where so many great films get lost or destroyed because of a false belief in what is possible and acceptable within the medium. This is why most Kubrick films are often bashed upon release by critics, only to be held aloft years later as revolutionary, groundbreaking films. Create something unique, expand your horizons, and there’s a whole world of film critics ready to tell you that you did it wrong.

David Lean’s DR. ZHIVAGO was met with venom upon its initial release. But that was nothing compared to the negative critical reviews of Lean’s next film, RYAN’S DAUGHTER. Critics were so harsh on this incredible movie from an artist at the top of his game, that Mr. Lean couldn’t bring himself to make another film for almost 14 years! Good work, kids. Your lack of vision and open-mindedness lost us some potentially great inclusions by Mr. Lean to the world of cinema. Thank god we got the amazing A PASSAGE TO INDIA before Mr. Lean left us too early.

Luckily, we know there are still people out there who do like to use their brains and appreciate and seek out films that ask them to do so. And we know there are critics out there who also appreciate such cinematic adventures. But they are becoming few and far between. But perhaps we will see a shift. If all is cyclical, then we may soon see a new age of cinematic literacy again. Another golden age. Or, we will just continue to slip deeper down the chasm of mindless entertainment, and films that require thought will be considered trash by the masses or, better yet, declared illegal.

I guess then I will have to become a member of some underground movement. Or, perhaps, I already am.

Woody Allen is a man who feeds off from his muses, and three of his previous four movies had seen hi

Woody Allen is a man who feeds off from his muses, and three of his previous four movies had seen him use one in particular, my personal favorite leading lady: Scarlett Johansson. One of those three films with Scarlett, Scoop, was a bit of a misfire but still decent, but there other two, Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, were modern masterpieces, both on my list of movies-to-see-before-you-die list. The one film without Scarlett of his last four, was Cassandra’s Dream, which was okay.

Now, in his latest film, Whatever Works, Woody doesn’t use Scarlett, aA bummer, I thought when I first heard that. But the guy’s muses have been Diane Keaton, Mia Farrow and Scarlett, so I knew whoever the new female in his film was, I was in for a treat. And a treat indeed, as I found out that Evan Rachel Wood, another one of my favorite actresses, was up for the gig.

And even though Whatever Works doesn’t really work, though it’s still quite good, it is Wood and fellow red-head Patricia Clarkson that make this film function as nicely as it does.

Anyways, it’s the story of Bros Yellnikoff, played by Larry David, who was once a physics proffesor, but now the only thing he teaches is chess to kids, plus he has a limp from a faild attempt at suicide. Boris breaks the fourth wall quite often, and tells all of this to us first-hand, the audience, much like Alvy Singer did in Woody’s masterpiece, Annie Hall.

However, the thing is, when Alvy did it he many times was interrupted by people talking to him, stopping whatever he was saying to us directly. But when Boris does it, he never gets interrupted, and he can rant on and on and on, making him seem like a proud, if not narcissistic, character. If you’re gonna be reminiscent of such a masterful film, then you better do it half right.

That part of the movie I hated, the Boris part, and it sucks because David is a great guy and I cannot bloody wait for the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but then we get to meet Melody St. Ann Celestine, the character Wood plays, and she’s so different from Boris, him the philosophical type her naïve but super interesting. She makes it enjoyable.

Boris is awful to Melodie at first, which I hate because I actually blame this on David more than on Woody, since I mean, had this role been played by Woody he would’ve been awful but charming at the same time, Larry I thought didn’t play it right at that point. But oh well, she eventually wins him over and they wed. And then her mother comes into the picture, played by the most wonderful Patricia Clarkson.

As unbelievable as Wood is, Clarkson’s the best thing in this film, but since she’s not a main character we don’t get to focus on her story, but are rather left with the cranky Boris and Melodie’s new fling with Randy, a british guy played by the charming Henry Cavill.

My only problem with Whatever Works isn’t the premise, because like with 90% of Woody films, I quite like the premise, it’s the delivery that bothers me, and it sucks because somewhere in this film there’s the possibility of a great one.

Another thing I didn’t like about this one was the look of it, especially since it marked Woody’s return to his one eternal muse, New York City, the rhythm of it, the look of it, it doesn’t seem Woody at all. And as much as I hate to say this, maybe Woody’s better off in Europe now.

However the movie’s saved, and as per usual in the films Woody makes, it is saved solely by the women in it, it is Evan Rachel Wood and Patricia Clarkson who make this thing have its working moments. And for that I am grateful to them because as many imperfections I can find in this film it is still a Woody film, and I’m always down with that.

Grade: B

Man, I am working my butt off right now! But I just noticed that it’s officially 4/20. Excuse me while I take a break from my research project (which is gonna be -singsong voice- aweeeesoooome!) and present you with a piece of a song I’m working on putting together for Feed Us A Fetus, whose subject matter seamlessly coincides with what I wish I was doing right now. Which is sleeping and not worrying about stuff like France during the Occupation and how I forgot to call Ian back and why my chest feels so tight on my heart’s side and if I will actually get help from the student health services this week or even have time to go.

I decided this entry needed a visual, at least. I googled "psychedelic dream," ooooh yeaaaah.

The Ian I mention above is the one I’ve been collaborating on this song with. I’ve had such a crazy mental block with it (and still sort of do). It’s a four-chorder, and they’re beautiful chords, but they need to go somewhere else and come back. My theory is you have to let your listeners hear other things, otherwise they won’t miss those chords, they’ll just get tired of em and feel like their ears are in the drone zone!

I have several pieces of this song — all different variations — and this, called

“Cassandra Shifty Eyes“

is my latest one. I sampled it on my turntable, did some secret tweaks that I won’t divulge because it’s none ya biz, and then layered over it with the digital speech function (shoutout to Microsoft Sam!) that exists under “Speech” on the Windows Control Panel. So I had the computer right next to the turntables and went to work. On Notepad I had these two things at the ready to copy and paste into the Preview textbox at will:

Zzzzz. Zzz. Zzz. Zz.

and

Even in her sleep, see, she’s got these shifty shifty eyes eyes. Ooh, shifty shifty noooooooooowwww.

Except the “noooooowwww” comes out all warbly and honestly, Microsoft Sam (Can I call you Mike Sam?), I don’t know where you go with some of that because there are literally only two distinct letters in that word after the initial consonant. But it’s all good.

I have these other portions, but I don’t know how I can fit them altogether.

Cassandra was murdered in her sleep and it was the professor with the dagger

. This gets pretty sick at the end and I mean sick like stupid. I kind of just flail around on the keys.

Cassandra on the Radio
(This one I sample on my turntables with a Vinyl Sim filter for “Old Radio”… it sounds Billie Holiday-esque?)

I really want to take a class on Arrangement. Or just composition in general. I feel like a writer who has a bunch of good lines but can’t put a freaking story together, and it’s ding dong frustrating. If I had more time, that fleeting temptress, I’d have something more solid.

Anyway, I digress, both from the point and from my homework. Happy 4/20 everyone! Shifty bloodshot eyes, here I come! If you see me tomorrow believe me when I say I am not a zombie. It will be hard, but believe me.

He-he-he-he!

AS CRÔNICAS DE NÁRNIA – PRÍNCIPE CASPIAN

Eu gostei mais do outro. Aquele do guada-roupa, feiticeira, blablabla.

E príncipe Caspian é a cara do rodrigo santoro

HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY

THERE WILL BE BLOOD (SANGUE NEGRO)

There will be blood (Sangue Negro).

Mas nesse There will be blood (Sangue Negro), Anderson cria algo realmente diferente para o cinema.

MARGOT AT THE WEDDING

O ESCAFANDRO E A BORBOLETA

vida dentro do escafandro

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

Beatles.

TRILOGIA JASON BOURNE

A Identidade Bourne

Me rendi desde o primeiro, A Identidade Bourne.

Acho tudo muito rápido e acabo me intediando.

A Supremacia Bourne

Não me interessam as idéias revisionistas e reacionárias do cara.

É bem bacana e passa no Telecine.

So Woody Allen seems to have found a way out of the woods. Firstly, he’s not in Britain. I always thought his dialogue spoken in a British accent sounded weird and clunky. He’s now a European filmmaker, but not UK European, real European.

Secondly, he’s not concerned with a “return to form” if the form you’re talking about is ANNIE HALL or MANHATTAN. Anyone who knows me is well aware of my feelings for these films but I have to say I’m delighted with this direction he’s taken. No longer is he looking for the comedic but is happy to let the characters and the situations breathe.

Woody Allen now seems to have let go of what he was as a director, to concentrate on what he is. When the Allen of BANANAS, SLEEPER and LOVE AND DEATH became the Allen of ANNIE HALL, INTERIORS and MANHATTAN he was initially chastised for abandoning his pure comic roots. Of course the negativity subsided when the realisation set in that Allen was evolving and that huge gains as an audience could be had by evolving with him.

The same could be said here.

After MATCH POINT, SCOOP and CASSANDRA’S DREAM (which for my money were on the bland side) Woody’s new evolution would appear to have taken shape. Will this be his final major artistic shift? That remains to be seen. One thing is for sure though, History will look kindly on his body of work.

I saw the film knowing nothing about it, I suggest you do the same.

The film opens on February 6th and probably won’t be in cinemas for long, after all…… there’s no explosions in this picture.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona is Woody Allen’s newest movie. A slight disclaimer before I start: I

Vicky Cristina Barcelona is Woody Allen’s newest movie.

A slight disclaimer before I start: I’m a fan of his early work, but his latest movies sucked so much that I shouldn’t have bothered to watch them. Yet, somehow, I can’t leave it be. So, if you can’t stand bitter comments about Match Point or Cassandra’s Dream (my review here), better not read this.

Anyhoo, Vicky Cristina Barcelona is okay, I guess. It definitely isn’t as abysmal as the aforementioned movies. But it’s not very good, either.

Plot: Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) are best friends and decide to go to Barcelona together. Both girls are complete opposites – Vicky is the practical, calm, rational stereotype, whose life seems happy, but actually, she’s very unhappy because there’s no passion in it, while Cristina is the impulsive, fickle artist-stereotype, who goes from one relationship to the next, never actually being able to stay anywhere for long. When they meet the painter Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), who barely escapes the fate of being a complete stereotype himself, both fall for him. Which of course can’t end well, especially since Juan Antonio’s manic-depressive artist cliché ex-wife Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz) is still very present in his life.

If I was Rebecca Hall, I would be very angry about this marketing – she’s more of a main character than Penelope Cruz.

While this movie had a lot of the problems Match Point and Cassandra’s Dream had – namely over-the-top writing, clichés instead of characters and too little jokes [seriously, this is supposed to be a comedy and maybe has two funny scenes], it also had Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, who outdo themselves in this movie.

Bardem’s Juan Antonio is a completely amazing guy. Bardem’s one of those people who can turn their sex appeal on or off, depending on what is required [another person able to do that is Gary Oldman], and it is so on in this movie. Plus, Juan Antonio’s complete honesty not only makes him really likeable, but it’s also the only thing to save him from being a stereotype.

Cruz’ Maria Elena unfortunately doesn’t escape the cliché, but Cruz plays her with such passion and utter commitment that it works again.

The rest of the cast isn’t bad, although mostly unremarkable, but unfortunately, their characters are badly written. Which is especially sad for Patricia Clarkson, who is such a cool actress and completely wasted in this movie.

The story feels a little bit like Woody Allen gave us a glimpse of one of his masturbatory fantasies. And honestly, this is not something I wanted to know, actually.

And I really didn’t like his bias against the practical, collected Vicky. I mean, I know, when people speak of love, they usually mean the hot, passionate kind. But there’s also a steady, calm one [and I guess even more types than just those two] and it’s no less love than the tantrum-throwing, possessive passion.

But this movie draws the conclusion [more or less] that while neither love automatically makes you happy, at least with the passionate kind you’re not lying to yourself. And I don’t buy it. I don’t think that people are automatically unhappy because they’re choosing someone steady.

Anyway, I’m surprised that this movie got so many nominations and is still a contender for the Oscars. And it won the Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy. Seriously? People have not seen a funnier movie this year? That is so sad…

While this movie is not a complete No-No, it’s more of a “Well, if you absolutely have to see it, I’ll come with you. If not, I’ll probably rent it sometime.”

1. In Bruges
2. Phone Booth
3. Pride & Glory
4. Tigerland
5. Cassandra’s Dream

Even though Colin Farrell pretty much sticks to the same type of roles hes a talented actor and has definitely delivered some good performances and starred in some good films. In Bruges takes the cake for me. Now some people thought he was good in Alexander, but I’m pretty sure he won a Razzie for that performance. Which is kinda funny because I didn’t think he was that bad. One of Ireland’s finest, just living the dream.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
★★★ / ★★★★

I knew Woody Allen still has it in him to make a really good film. After the wishy-washy “Scoop” and “Cassandra’s Dream,” a lot of people began to lose hope once again because they wanted a film as great as “Match Point.” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is sexy, character-driven and sublime. The premise is two best friends (Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson) spend a summer in Barcelona and unexpectedly fall for an artistic and charismatic Spaniard (Javier Bardem). At first I thought I could relate more with Hall because she’s sensible and she knows exactly what she wants. But as the film went on, I could identify with Johansson more because she doesn’t limit herself by following society’s labels. She’s very open to things that can enlighten her not just intellectually but spiritually as well. Things get more complicated when the Bardem’s ex-wife, played by the gorgeous Penélope Cruz who deserves an Oscar nomination, returns after trying to kill herself. She provided that extra spice that the film needed in order be more romantic not in a safe way, but in a dangerous and unpredictable manner. I was impressed with this picture because each scene felt so organic. The characters talked and acted like real people, which I think is difficult to accomplish in a story about the complex dynamics between the characters. All of the actors had something to do and impacted each other in both subtle and profound ways. Another factor that I admired about this film is its stark contrast between American and European. The most obvious one includes Hall’s business-minded, unexciting husband (Chris Messina) compared to raw, passionate Bardem. One can also argue that Hall is more American while Johansson is more European. These differences even go as far as which types of clothes the characters wear. As much as I loved this film, I cannot give it a four-star rating because it needed an extra thirty minutes to reach a more insightful conclusion. I don’t mean tying up some loose ends in order for everyone to be happy. In fact, I love that this film was bold enough to leave some unhappy characters. It’s just that, in a Woody Allen film, you expect something more profound, something more complete. It’s not as introspective as “Match Point” but it comes very close.

Out of the ones that I bothered to see, of course, here are the ones that disappointed me the most.

1.Stop-Loss
With the anticipation of this being Kimberly Peirce’s follow-up to Boys Don’t Cry, I was stunned to see just how much of a by-the-numbers film it ended up being.
2.Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
They obviously should’ve stopped while they were ahead, because the first film really had no business being hilarious at all. It has definitely run its course now.
3.War, Inc.
Disguised as another film, this is essentially just Grosse Pointe Blank 2, just without any of the good qualities of the first film.
4.The Life Before Her Eyes
It looked like a rare good role for Uma Thurman outside of Tarantino projects, and with a director like House of Sand and Fog’s Vadim Perelman, it’s hard to believe it came out this disappointing.
5.Step Brothers
If Apatow-produced projects are anything less than non-stop hilarious, then they are a disappointment for sure. This one is such a scattershot piece of mostly-overdone physical comedy that it is just plain bad.
6.Righteous Kill
DeNiro and Pacino are finally together again! Yes they are, but it’s all put to waste in this formulaic murder mystery that would’ve fit nicely between some CSI or Law and Order shows.
7.Smart People
It was hyped as a sarcastic equal to recent indie gems like Little Miss Sunshine and Juno, but this one is mostly dull.
8.Be Kind Rewind
Proof once more that Michel Gondry should never write screenplays, but only direct. There are moments of fun in this film, but it is ultimately stale.
9.The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Yes, I had to include this film. Do not take it the wrong way, because I did like it very much…I was just expecting it to move me much more than it did.
10.Cassandra’s Dream
The build-up in this Woody Allen film is promising and the peformances by the leads are very good, but the resolution is maddening, and for the legendary filmmaker – extremely baffling.

My husband almost refused to sit with me to watch the movie we’d Netflixed last night. It wasn’t so much that he feared the dreaded “chick flick” (I am blessed with a man who wears his heart on his sleeve just enough to find his way through such films with no problem), it was just that he jokingly refused to watch me swoon over two of the tastiest men in movies – Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell.

Cassandra’s Dream wasn’t exactly a great film, nor was it particularly uplifting. The men were pretty, but that didn’t really counterbalance the claustrophobic feel of the movie. I suppose the film was effective in that I was squirming along with the characters at the nearly impossible situations they created for themselves through greed and misplaced loyalties and a refusal to heed their own morals or instincts.

Basically, two brothers from London agree to murder a man who threatens their uncle’s reputation and fortune. Colin Farrell plays the brother crippled by conscience, the one who turns to drink and drugs to numb the pain, all to no avail. He is coming apart at the seams. His fragility threatens the entire wicked scheme.

In spite of myself, I wanted these guys to get away with their crime, but at the same time, I wanted Farrell’s character to do the impossible, to become whole again.

The only answer I could come up with, as we watched the story unfold on our comfortable couch bathed in the glow of the Christmas tree, was that this guy needed to find a priest. The only thing I could think of that might make his soul clean again was some time in a confession booth and as many Acts of Contrition and Hail Marys as he could muster.

I have mentioned previously that I dance with my Catholic heritage, holding dear to the pieces that speak to me directly – my own vision of Mary, the mystics, the commitment to service – and yet, I definitely shy away from other aspects – Original Sin, patriarchy, the idea that it is the “One True Faith.”

Still, Catholicism seems to flow in my blood as surely as the prayers have been etched into my brain.

Even when I was furthest from my Christian roots, when I had run out of options, I found myself beseeching Jesus that I would do whatever he might ask, if only he could get me out of the mess I had made. I was twenty years old, alone in a Galway dorm room, trying to live through a case of alcohol poisoning so intense I would have been in an American emergency room in a heartbeat. A man I had been foolish enough to love decided to break my heart only after he had bought me one of everything they had behind the bar. Young, stupid, and scared out of my mind, I clung to my pillow and just repeated the Lord’s Prayer as my body shook and my head swam.

Far from my finest hour, and certainly one that I must cherish as a lesson and a warning. Only years later, when I have made my peace with Christianity, can I look back to that moment and understand the depths of my belief in the power of heavenly salvation and aid. It is definitely not something that springs from an intellectual place within me. It is from a visceral place, a spiritual place beyond words that makes me understand why people need faith and a religion upon which to hang those convictions.

What would a priest do for a guy who had committed such a horrific sin? My mind says, not much. My soul seems to think that he might be able to do something more.

I still pursue a path guided by the wisdom of many traditions, but it seems that when things are really dire my survival instinct takes me back to what I learned first.

Our Father, who art in Heaven…
