Today’s factoid will again be building off the revelation of my former days of cutting the movie ads out of the newspaper and plastering them across my wall.

I was invited to fill part of a time capsule in December 2000.  What did I put in my bag?  You guessed it … tiny little ads for “Cast Away” and other movies that I can’t remember.  There were only other things because my mom was able to persuade me to include them.

I saw F. Gary Gray’s Law Abiding Citizen last night, and saw two incredible trailers, which prompted this aside:

The purpose of an advertisement is to make me want to buy your product, Hollywood. If I don’t see a trailer for your film, I’ll at least feel neutral about it. If I see a compelling, provocative trailer, I may well want to see the film. But if I see a trailer that gives away the whole damn plot (or at least gives me that impression), it will leave me utterly uninterested.

Whether we’re talking about a cheesy, but potentially enjoyable armored car heist or Tom Hanks forging a deep friendship with a volleyball, this has been a problem for a while.

But it’s rare that I’ve seen such an egregious offender as Jim Sheridan’s Brothers:

I don’t need to see this movie. Ever.

Remarkably, in the same evening, I saw an absolutely balls-out-audacious trailer that gave away a TON about its film – Breck Eisner’s “The Crazies” – and yet still left me wanting to see it:

Story structure exists for a reason. You can pitch me a movie without revealing every twist. It’s okay. Really.

Both of these films have their selling points. The acting looks solid in Brothers, and I’m quite pleased to see someone acknowledge the uncanny resemblance between Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire. I approve of the The Crazies‘ shameless appropriation of Gary Jules’ “Mad World” (originally written for Donnie Darko), and it looks like potentially fun cheese (although I’ve been burned by that assessment before).

These films may be good or bad, and that’s really not the point. We’re talking about the difference between a book jacket and the Cliff’s Notes.

Tantalize me, Hollywood. Give me a little, and leave me wanting more, and I may just buy a ticket.

*There are two exceptions to this rule:
-Romantic comedies. The quantity of “spoilers” in the trailer had no bearing on my decision not to see Love Happens.
-Marley and Me (only obliquely related, and thoroughly spoilerific).

I was putting a bandage on my girlfriend’s foot when she said I was actually making a cast.

Cast is the usually-white thing that people put around their legs or arms when they break a bone. It’s the thingy on which people sign their names or write a cute message to the person that broke the bone.

But for some unknown reason, I thought cast was hoof, which is a horse paw.

Considering that I was treating my girlfriend’s foot, I could understand the paw thing.

But I didn’t get the joke.

I only understood what she was saying after she explained to me what cast really was.

Then, I immediately thought about the movie “Cast Away,” in which Tom Hanks  stranded on an island for years talking to his volleyball Wilson.

“What’s cast away?” I asked my girlfriend.

Cast away is to throw away, discard. That’s what happened to Tom Hanks and Wilson.

I hate paying bills!

Mostly because they keep frickin’ coming once you have paid them! Now, I know that is the natural order of things but I really hate paying bills. Racking them up- yeah dislike that too! I am getting to the point in my life that I am bored with money and all that comes with it. Keep thinking about what it would be like to be a cast away on a deserted island even if for just a few years! 

What a tan I would get right! Ha- more like skin cancer! But there would be the great outdoors- well as long as there was no Tsunami! Well, fresh fruit all the time…but how many ways can you serve bananas and coconut milk? Great shape climbing trees and such…ugh but no trainer to stretch you out!

Ok said all that to say this there is never anything good without challenges. There is bad without good but you never seem to get good without bad….just the way nature wants it I suppose.

But, if I could get that island I would want 7 things from the shipwreck to wash ashore with me assuming there would be a fresh water option and edible foods on the island:

1. A never ending supply of toilet paper (first thing I would do is take all the 2 ply and pull it apart to double the amount I had!)
2. A big box of reuseable match sticks
3. Ok and yeah I’m a chick- Tampons – enough forever and 1 day!
4. Tons of Advil-see 3
5. 50+  Sunblock!
6. A guy that is totally hot – an all around handy man-total McGuyver type
7. A satellite phone with GPS locator - so I can call after a month when:

• I have run out of the toilet paper… cause… well… I need to make some kind of bed to sleep on-
• I find out the ‘resuseable’ matchsticks were made in China and there is no such thing as reuseable matchsticks
• period starts!
• Run out of avil (between cramps and the headaches that I am getting from having only handyman to talk to)
•  Lastly, out of sunblock as well – because I poured it over handy guys head to ‘Block’ him out! Does not work…

At this point – all I can do is call whomever answers the phone and yell ’I am a celebrity – get me out of here!’

Actually, I think that I would love this for much longer- what would be fear inducing is coming back and seeing what happened in the months I was gone- oh no what would the GOP have been up to while I was away??

You know at the end of the day might give this ship wreck idea a try – esp if handy man is this damn handy: 

I have largely been home-bound for the last two weeks. Hardly any college, [of course] no studies, no outings. So with nothing much to do, this is the third Tom Hanks movie I watched this week after Forrest Gump and Cast Away.

Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington are lawyers. The opening scene of the movie shows them fighting a civil construction case. The first thing that pops in my mind is, it looks like a lawyer-eat-lawyer movie. [No, I prefer not reading up about the movie before watching it]. Twenty minutes hence, as Hanks announces to Washington that he has AIDS and got fired because of it, methinks, “Oh, Fir Milenge.” As it turns out, the movie is altogether different from the first few impressions I formed of it.

The central idea of the movie is about getting justice to an AIDS-infected highly competent lawyer who got fired not because he has AIDS, but because of his sexual preference. Joe Miller [Denzel Washington], a severe homophobe and an AIDS-fearing “normal” man has a change of mind when he sees and understands that being gay is not about “just trying to get in your pants.” That all of us have the very basic right to sleep and live and be happy with whomever we wish to, regardless of the gender. That anyone can contract AIDS even if they remained truly faithful to their partners, never did drugs and always slept with people of the other sex.

I liked the movie, although it left me thinking that the out-of-courtroom scenes could have been handled with more emotion and detailing. Tom Hanks’s personal, emotional and professional trauma largely goes undepicted as Denzel Washington steals the limelight with his power-packed performance of the man who fights for, and with Hanks.

The movie ends with a memorial service at Hanks’ home where a video of his happy childhood is being shown to the guests. We could have really done with a better, more touching ending.

PS: 1. I found the movie not so much either about Tom Hanks or Philadelphia the city. Spare one reference about the significance of liberty and freedom in the city of Philadelphia, I could not find a relation between the title and the story. Someone has a clue?

2. I watched Cast Away a couple of days back and believe me I sat through the entire length of the movie only because of Tom Hanks. I liked the middle-half when he is stranded on that island. Box the opening and the ending.

3. Tom Hanks actually looked handsome at some point of time!

I pride myself on my ability to comment intelligently on every aspect of life.  But I was challenged when my plane crashed in the Pacific back in June.

The first criticism I had was with the pilot’s decision to have a heart attack and leave the passengers to pray to their gods and await death.  Very unprofessional. I brought this up with the folks at Delta and they just kept apologizing. I said sorry wasn’t gonna make me sane again, but their customer service officials couldn’t help me there.

Being stuck on a desert island is not at all what it’s cracked up to be.  It’s nothing like Gilligan’s Island.  Especially when you’re the only one.  And it’s nothing like the movie Cast Away.  Maybe I just didn’t relate to the main character of Cast Away because I never had wimpy suicidal thoughts or talked to volleyballs (and believe me there were an unnecessary and inexplicable amount of volleyballs on that dumb island!).  Also, I probably least relate to the guy in Cast Away because he loved his fiancee while I strongly hate my fiancee and I’m only marrying her for her money and sound financial advice.

Utter bullshit.

One thing that does fit with everything from Gilligan’s Island was the superflous use of coconuts. I made a coconut radio just like the Professor. As well as coconut bowls, coconut shoes and a coconut wife.

You know folks, it is hard to swim off of a desert island.  First, there’s all this water.  Then you have the sharks.  They didn’t try to eat me but they didn’t add a lot to the advancement of the plot.  Maybe one of them could have called the Coast Guard?  Was one of them my estranged son come to make amends and take me to a place where people don’t have to drink their own urine? Nope.

One aspect that I found thrilling, was that black fog that kept chasing me!  Man, what was up with that? Or when Satan spoke to me through the severed head of a pig. Thrilling, but confusing. You know, like a David Lynch stranding-on-a-desert-island.

Is it supposed to be symbolic or something?

Anyway, so that’s the story and my critique of it. See you next week when I review the box-office smash, Ponyo!

Overall, I rate being stranded for months at a time with no hope of rescue: 3 1/2 coconuts.

I am so much poorer but so happy to secure my trip to brissy again.

Just finished a 30mins call with WS, that silly boy left his laptop in school.

Familiensaga (eher Komödie) von Eric Malpass
Schöner, sentimentaler Musiktitel mit viel Erinnerungswert an die 70er Jahre. Nette filmische  Handlung, aufgewertet durch eine recht gute und gefällige Schauspielergarde, allen voran die unvergesslichen Helden der Leinwand Agnes Windeck und Werner Hinz. Für die Komposition wurde James Last 1969 mit der Goldenen Leinwand ausgezeichnet. Als Melodie für mich zur damaligen Zeit indiskutabel, weil langweilig. Heute, viele Dekaden später, erkenne ich den Wert, den diese unvergängliche Musik auszeichnet und krame sie so manches Mal gerne aus meinem Schatzkästchen, Abteilung Melancholie, hervor.

Das Traumschiff

In den 80er Jahren, also in Zeiten ohne Premiere und allen weiteren privaten Sendern (jedenfalls in meiner Region) läuft das Traumschiff über den Bildschirm, weniger mit gehaltvollen Traumgeschichten als mit der einzigartigen und unverkennbaren Traummelodie von James Last komponiert. Erwähnenswert wegen Erinnerungswert! Sie erinnert an die 80er Jahre, die damals für die meisten recht unspektakulär war, nur…heute weiß man sie zu schätzen! Man schließe die Augen und versetze sich in dieses Jahrzehnt der vielen schönen Lebensmomente! Zeit, könntest Du zurückkommen….

Beeindruckende Leistung und schauspielerisches Glanzstück von Tom Hanks mit Wilson, dem Basketball…
Feinfühlige und leise Musik, die in Verbindung zu den Filmbildern eine rundum gute Arbeit wiedergibt. Mit dieser Musik verläßt er auf seinem selbstgezimmerten Floß die Insel, auf der er vier Jahre unfreiwillig lebte. Ein ganz besonders beeindruckender Teil des Filmes unter den Klängen dieses Sounds…

der große Henry Mancini – The Thornbirds (1983)
Eine Filmmelodie, die ihresgleichen sucht. Vielleicht so euphorisch gedacht, weil ich die Verfilmung als absolut gelungen ansehe. Richard Chamberlain, bisher verkannter 2. Klasse-Schauspieler, schwang sich zu einer Traumrolle auf und Rachel Ward als Maggie ist eine meiner Heldinnen im Filmgenre überhaupt. Natürlich verhalfen weitere  Starbesetzungen wie Barbara Stanwyck und Eve Marie Saint zu diesem – meinem – Highlight der 80er Jahre. Neben einem Bestseller auch eine gute filmische Inszenierung zu gestalten, gelang bisher nur bei Margret Mitchells Vom Winde verweht.

- gefühlvoll, emotional und perfekt inszeniert, glänzend gespielt – auch von den Nebenrollenbesetzungen. Audrey Hepburn verkörpert mit ihrem grazilen Aussehen und zartem Wesen die Leichtigkeit des Seins in einer atemberaubenden Rolle und George Peppard hilft ihr beim Sturz aus den rosaroten Wolken zu einer sanften Landung. Liebevolle Komödie mit Hintergrund und spirituellem Charme.

A friend and I were recently having a typical, inane discussion at work for, what I can only assume, was the 7th or 8th such digression that particular day. Truth be told, I love these digressions. They are what makes work tolerable. I can’t tell you how excited I get to walk into someone’s office or have someone come to mine to waste 3 to 5 minutes waxing poetic about the stupidest shit imaginable. Things like:

“Should guys frost their tips after they turn 21?”

“Can masturbation at work technically be considered sexual harassment against yourself?”

“Now that Sam Cassell is retired from basketball, who is the ugliest man in professional sports?”

“Do you get as annoyed as I do with people who say, ‘Anyways…’?”

“Should I be more alarmed that our boss creepily commented on someone’s breasts or that he actually described them as ‘nice cans’?”

“How is it possible that the alien ship that Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith infected with a computer virus in Independence Day was actually using a Windows-compatible PC?”

I wish I could record these daily digressions because they are priceless pieces of business. Lunchtime, when the proper crew is all present and accounted for, is an hour straight of this stuff. I just need to set up some audio equipment and we’d have ourselves a killer podcast. Anyways…

Our discussion started innocently enough and admittedly, it was a bit nerdy. I’ve become a bit of a tech geek over the past few years. Not that I have an exorbitant amount of money to spend on techie things, but I like to follow the latest and greatest when it comes to the web, computers, video cameras, and anything else that arouses my inner nerd. I’m still not sure if I just grew into this over the past few years or if I’ve always been a bit of a nerd and am just now starting to embrace it. For example, I love testing out the newest online productivity tools. There’s so many cool web-based tools to make certain parts of your day easier. I know, I can hear people yawning as I’m writing this, but I’m getting to my point. I had recommended an online tool to my friend to make email and file search easier. I’ve become a fan of this tool, thought he might like it, and I wanted to hear his assessment. Interestingly enough, and without a hint of sarcasm, he said he liked it, but felt like he was cheating on his current tool of choice, which he’s used for quite a while. I completely understood what he was saying on the surface, but his answer got me thinking about the deeper meaning behind his answer. Why do people think inanimate objects, like a piece of software, have feelings? And why is it that we humans develop intimate relationships with these objects to the point where we actually consider it cheating if we use something else?

Honestly, we are all guilty of this. Everyone on the planet, at times in their life, feels a deep, personal connection to some object, like a cell phone or a comfortable chair or a pair of sunglasses or a tattered blanket, that truly has no fucking clue about…anything. These objects not only don’t know about feelings, they have no conscious thought, they have nothing. Nothing. Yet we all fall in love with objects that can’t return love in the traditional sense. And it kills us emotionally when something happens and suddenly the object is no more. We feel a sense of loss similar to death. Just think about Wilson, the volleyball from Cast Away with Tom Hanks. How fucking devastated was he when that volleyball broke loose from his makeshift raft and drifted out of his reach. We were devastated, too, as we watched Tom Hanks’ character have his heart ripped out, because we all know the feeling.

These feelings start when you’re a kid. Think about that first stuffed animal you had or that first doll. I don’t remember a hell of a lot from when I was very young, but I do remember a stuffed dog that I couldn’t go to bed without until I was about 7. I think it was light brown with dark brown spots and looked a bit like Snoopy, but I forgot its name. Yet I needed that stuffed dog, both physically and emotionally, in order to fall asleep comfortably. Soon enough, it was gone, replaced by baseball gloves, footballs, and my younger brother. Once I got him, I didn’t need a stuffed animal anymore as I was too busy tending to my brother’s sleepwalking and unsuccessful attempts at finding the bedroom door so he could go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The little bastard would jump up and down on his bed screaming for me to help him take a piss. Sometimes I would help, sometimes I wouldn’t. My brother had a stuffed bear that he called “Betta Betta Bear.” Where he came up with that name is beyond me, but he had that thing with him every night, just like I had my dog. Looking back, I should have been more buddy-buddy with Betta Betta Bear. I would have told that damn bear that my brother was now his nighttime responsibility, not mine. I unintentionally got my brother back a few years later. While sleepwalking one summer night, I went into his room, opened his window and urinated through his screen window like it was the most normal thing in the world to do. My mom saw all of this, screamed at me while I was in mid-stream, and I, still under the spell of the Sandman, looked at her like, “Yeah, what’s your problem, babe?”

I grew up in the heyday of the Star Wars-era, but I wasn’t a big action figure collector. Those toys didn’t really blow my hair back. I was never really that kid who had the desire to set out a whole battalion of action figures on the bedroom floor, giving each character a name and personality, as an elaborate battle would ensue. Actually, I was never a big collector of anything, except sports equipment and music. I had friends growing up who had absolutely amazing Star Wars action figure collections. You know, those kids who had the huge Millennium Falcon set-up and the Death Star cutaway sets. I was always a bit jealous of them, but, looking back, I know I would have played with them for about three days and then would have been outside playing with other shit. That whole Star Wars action figure thing is all a bit strange now looking back. The only one I would have wanted would have been Princess Leia. I watched Return of the Jedi recently with my 6-year-old son and, I must admit, it gave me a renewed appreciation for early 1980’s-era Carrie Fisher. Looking at her sitting at the lap of Jabba the Hut in that sexy little bikini is still slightly arousing. Then, I inevitably think of her today as she more closely resembles Jabba the Hut than Princess Leia. Cocaine is bad for you, kids.
