friday, october 2nd
stopover in new york and it happens to be the day they’re having a party for jetblue all-you-can-jet passengers! woohoo! lots of free food. good thing an all-you-can-jetter who was sitting next to me tipped me off on it. fucking score. free alcohol too, and people kept tossing their extra drink tickets to my table for some reason. i didn’t drink, though.

unfortunately, the guy who tipped me off to the event had stinky breath… i could smell his breath through his exhale of his nose. blah!!! talked with jason? mike? someone else? while at the free food thing. jason is a dude from portland who works for idealist, another guy is this kinda older, cocky rich guy who does real estate in florida… ex-navy, talks about being rich and how once you make a certain amount of money you can never go back to getting mediocre money (he said something like $100,000 was not enough a year because of what he was used to). he WAS a consultant, after all.

anyway, off to san francisco after that. parents pick me up and then get into some ridiculous argument action about a detour and driving. stupid. go to bed asap.

—

saturday, october 3rd
eat breakfast at denny’s with the godparents and then nap. putz around. i have a note here that says “moon day” but i’m not sure what that means. watch “zombieland” with my brother and roxanne, and then eat japanese food for dinner at sakura with the rentals.

a church family owns the restaurant so we got massif free foodages.

continue to putz around, and then bart to sherry’s. relax.

—

sunday, october 4th
go to church with sherry and tin-win. it’s whatevers, the pastor is pretty funny and amusing, and he certainly has charm, but as always, i don’t agree with the bs he spews. go to korean lunch (soondooboo! they actually have veggie soondooboo!) with one of their friends, and then i go muni to the castro st. fair.

view from sherry and tin-win’s fancy apartment.

hilarious back massager ;x is that REALLY what it is? can’t tell.

i was expecting more, unfortunately, but it was really quite tame.

this guy was dancing up a storm, though.

met up with jesse and his sister shortly thereafter and went to this really super cute tea house called salmovar that had a $65 pot of tea!!!!

<img src="“>
this is a tray of cookies we got. karla met up with us but it took her a while to get there. right when jesse was taking off, actually. too bad!

ate pizza buffet with sherry and tin-win for dinner, and then putzed around! it was good, but there weren’t much veggie selections, so when the workers found out i was vegetarian they kept bringing me everything ad nauseum. really nice of them!

—

monday, october 5th

found a neat market and bought this amazing! beets drink! so delicious!

went to the ferry building shortly thereafter to meet up with jesse.

found this amazing soap. i want i i want it i want it i want it. unfortunately, i broke the bottle of beets juice before i got to finish it all :/ i want more, though. someone get me some.

as i was standing in the ferry building, waiting for jesse, i caught a glimpse of the back of some girl wearing green, and she walked like jean-claire so i thought it was maybe jean-claire, so i texted jean-claire, and it WAS her, which is really weird, because if i hadn’t been looking in her direction or had looked in her direction literally five seconds later, i wouldn’t have seen her. not to mention… i met her in peru, and she’d lived in portland up until that point. so what the fuck. it was weird and random.

jesse and i went to eat mexican food and then he went back to work.

after this, i didn’t take notes, so it’s all a blur. teehee!

PORTFOLIOS

* WHEN TO WITHSTAND YOUR PARTNER Emilio Azcarraga MARXIST?

* HOW MUCH DO YOU REPRESENT TELEVISA MEDIAPRO LOSSES?

* THE “PEOPLE BASTKETBALL” Zapatero seems to sink

OF JOSE A. PEREZ STUART

It seems that Mexican businessman of television, Emilio Azcarraga Jean, will take strong measures in the coming days that could redefine their society with a Spanish Marxist group that embarked on a costly adventure that can lead to Televisa, the world leader in television Hispanic headache wit

h some investors.

So far, management conducted by the consortium TELEVISA Azcarraga Jean, has been impeccable. Not only has preserved what he inherited from his father, but has even increased it received. He has made some interesting operations that have allowed diversification and, therefore, lower exposure to risks arising from having everything put in one basket. Certainly the bulk of the revenue remains the same, but no doubt it has been known to drive with two middle brilliance turbulence:

* The alternation of power in Mexico, which means they restructure the relationship with the real factors of power in that country, where the president no longer enjoys the privileges meta decades ago, and

* Successive economic crises resulting from financial mismanagement in New York: first, the severe blow to international investors on discovery of accounting scandals that began with the famous Enron case, and secondly, the recession triggered by the injection funds in high-risk mortgages that became unaffordable, and reason for the technical bankruptcy of the U.S. financial system.

However, the only point of concern is the dual society that has established a curious business groups, significantly linked to the Spanish Socialists, now experiencing serious problems.

A) The first was with today endeudadísimo Grupo Prisa, the late Jesus de Polanco, from a minor league contract for the operation of the company that gave rise to TELEVISA: XEW radio station, known as the Voice of America America from Mexico. The Socialist tendencies of the Prisa Group and, therefore, their SER radio division, has given several headaches Emilio Azcarraga Jean, before handling biased ideologizing with which it has been at times to manage the hotline and comments. Another of the ballast with which it has struggled Azcarraga Jean is Antonio Navalon, very disreputable character in Spain, for his involvement in an explosive case of just handling of public funds during one of the socialist governments of that country.

B) But the second case was the association of Televisa, in 2006, with the so-called Group Mediapro, which in Spain has been linked publicly with the still politically from that country’s socialist president, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

TELEVISA Spanish entered the television market with a not inconsiderable 40% of shares in the channel called La Sexta, a firm that according to the initial public comment, due to ties of its main backer Spanish, the picturesque Trotskyist Jaume Roures, with Spanish socialist officials could get some juicy profits. This, however, has not worked. For the sake of those unfamiliar with the Hispanic social ExtraMED, we say that such Roures, who runs the television station La Sexta, a character who seems to emerge from the picaresque

* Roures is called in Spain “The People Basketball Zapatero.

* Roures Mediapro Group owns, operates as a holding company under whose umbrella they operate, for example, the open television channel La Sexta and declared a small newspaper of communist leanings called Public.

* The latest reports indicate that this group reported has a “financial gap of 3.140 billion euros, that is deepening every day because daily newspaper lost 50,000 euros and the Televisa network [which Televisa owns 40% of the shares], 350.000. 350,000 euros a day …!

* As if that were not enough, says the company “will have six years pay EUR 2.583 million for broadcasting rights. A huge number, because it is 25 times greater than the equity of the company and 80 times its operating profit” as Digital Journalist discusses just this past 21 November 2009. The numbers therefore do not add up.

* The worst of it all, and mainly for the smart Emilio Azcarraga Jean, is that they have two completely opposite philosophies. Emilio, in effect, recognizes the social function of television show, but also clearly stated in seeking business profitability, as it has hundreds of thousands of shareholders in the world who should be held accountable satisfactory. Instead, the picturesque Roures, defined itself as Marxist, says: “I make money to serve my ideas.” He adds: “I do not work, I was active.

Go partner to put into the hands of Emilio Azcarraga …! A Marxist activist who apparently affected the prestigious defined by the psychiatrist Otto Kernberg, as T ISORDERS Narcissistic Personality, “just looking to make money for autodeleitarse. And so lost 350,000 euros a day in La Sexta! Total, s nly happens to TELEVISA account …

The words I quoted from the picturesque Marxist Jaume Roures are copied from an interview he gave the French Communist newspaper Liberation, that any idle can be found at the website of the Paris daily.

Roures, the picturesque Marxist who spent several years in prison during the Franco regime not because of his ideas but his Trotskyite militant subversive as stated, even has a daughter who was born in Nicaragua during the Sandino-Communist revolution.

With the resources we got, they say in Spain, thanks to the business which was provided by its relations with the socialist leaders of his country, has produced films pro-Communist, as performed by Oliver Stone in which he praises Fidel Castro.

One thing is the words and other figures. You can say outrageous and a half, but the numbers do not lie. Let’s see how you represent the loss of MEDIAPRO TELEVISA And how long will support the Mexican television group which Roures continue having fun with other people’s money …

For now, Roures already had to cut staff in its daily paper Publico, which appeared last week without signatures in protest of drafting such a measure taken to address the crisis in the newspaper.

And to make matters worse, the Spanish Socialist government seems to water:

* The farmers took to the streets to protest the lack of support they enjoy.

* The Socialist government itself was discredited by the way they “solved” the hijacking of the vessel Alakrana: gave money to the pirates made a pact with them.

* Unemployment is rising, reflecting the strategy of raising taxes, worsening the crisis.

The political support Roures therefore also seem to sink. The ship then sinks.

PD is said that behind all these investments that some Mexicans like Carlos Slim and Emilio Azcarraga been made in Spain, Curiously, significantly with “businessmen” not typically Marxist and capitalist, is the hidden hand of Felipe González. Is it?

* The photograph corresponds to Jaume Roures.

Y añade: “Yo no trabajo, yo milito“.

Down to North Beach I went to check out an art show, mingled with friends and promptly left for a basement show on the other side of the City. Chillin’ in the Castro waiting for the 24 (which never comes) I almost decided to call the night quits and walk home. Thank God I did not. Arriving at the show, I obviously had missed the tall can in brown bag memo for the second time of the night. My friend and I were standing awkwardly in the corner while her boyfriend, I am sure was trying to justify inviting us. The last band was about to go on, and as sad as I was to leave the Santa Claus doppelgänger to guard the stairs by himself, I hurried on inside to at least get warm.

The music began to play, a smooth mixture of psychedelic beach indie pop if there is such a thing. I quickly found myself enjoying the music and wishing I could move closer. As the first song ended and the second began, I knew I had heard the music before, I leaned to my friend Chrissy’s bf and asked if he knew the name of the band, as I was asking if it was Real Estate, he leaned in and whispered I think they are called Real Estate. CRAZY SHIT!!! I am in love. The music was beautiful, their energy was just great, they looked as stoked to be there as I was to witness this miraculous event ha. As a firm believer in fate, I feel as though the fate gods really stepped up their game last night.

Three Educational Resources

Description of Audience

The audience for this resource evaluation is represented by a college-educated person who wants to learn basic Web design, in particular HTML and CSS. The person has no prior experience whatsoever with Web design or coding for the Web. Rather than attempt to learn Web design through software like Adobe Dreamweaver, this person wants to learn the fundamentals of Web design, i.e. creating Web sites from scratch. Although her main goal is not to become a professional Web designer, this person wants to become proficient enough to put these skills on her resume.

Resources Evaluated

Evaluation

Quick Summary of Pros and Cons of the Three Resources

Resource #1: http://www.w3schools.com

Pros: The W3Schools are quite accessible to the beginner and, since they are Web pages, they provide a number of interactive features for learners of HTML. In addition, they are free of cost, which makes them a very good value for what they provide.

Cons: The Web pages are a little cluttered with extra text, which can be distracting when you are trying to learn. The description of concepts in HTML are sometimes too sparse and fail to give enough context for the learner to gain a full appreciation of the interrelationship of concepts.

Resource #2: Castro, E. (2007). HTML, XHTML & CSS. Visual quickstart guide. Berkeley, CA: Peachpit Press.

Pros: The book provides a comprehensive introduction to (X)HTML and CSS in an accessible format and layout at a relatively low price.Cons: Because it is a paper book, it doesn’t have the same interactivity and concomitant benefits as the W3Schools Web site. Also, it will go out of date, whereas Web sites will be updated.

Resource #3: Online Course, e.g. University of Washington – INFX 503

Pros: The HTML course is the most accessible and interactive resource and, for most learners, would be the most effective resource for learning HTML.

Cons: The course is by far the most expensive resource and would require significant justification to spend thousands of dollars.

Evaluation Criteria

1) Is the resource accessible to a beginner? (Accessibility)

This criterion encompasses a number of components of the resource, including the level of language used (i.e. lay speak or technical jargon) and the design of the information presented (e.g. page layout in the book and on the Web site).

2) Does the resource facilitate hands-on learning/interactivity? (Interactivity)Since learning to hand code Web sites requires hands-on training, it’s imperative that educational resources include an interactive component. Although it would seem the book would surely fail in this regard, this criterion doesn’t necessarily preclude the book from a positive evaluation.

3) How much does the resource cost? (Cost)

A simple cost-benefit analysis of these resources in the context of our audience’s desired goals is essential to a thorough evaluation.

Resource #1: http://www.w3schools.com

Quick Evaluation Summary

Pros: The W3Schools are quite accessible to the beginner and, since they are Web pages, they provide a number of interactive features for learners of HTML. In addition, they are free of cost, which makes them a very good value for what they provide.Cons: The Web pages are a little cluttered with extra text, which can be distracting when you are trying to learn. The description of concepts in HTML are sometimes too sparse and fail to give enough context for the learner to gain a full appreciation of the interrelationship of concepts.

Detailed Evaluation

Accessibility

The HTML section on the W3Schools Web site begins with a very brief, but plain-spoken introduction to what HTML is and how it works. The writing throughout the site is clear and concise and appears to be without grammatical errors. In fact, the HTML tutorial keeps descriptive text, or body copy, to a minimum and uses “Try It Yourself” in-browser HTML text editors (see Interactivity section of Evaluation). There could be a negative aspect to the sparse description on the site. More description of the concepts could provide useful context and help the learner gain a more comprehensive understanding of HTML concepts. The W3Schools HTML tutorial layout is simple and functional (one would hope so, since the whole point is to teach Web design). One negative aspect of the Web page layout is a disorienting amount of text that surrounds the main body of the Web pages where the tutorial information is located. Although the navigation menu on the left, under the heading “HTML Basic” is useful, the banner advertisements and those on the left hand side of the screen are distracting. Also, the links to other tutorials for CSS, XML, Javascript and more are not needed. It would be easier to focus on learning HTML if superfluous text were removed.

Nonetheless, if the user focuses on just the tutorial information, the Schools have created a logical, step-by-step process to gradually familiarize the reader with HTML and related concepts. The Web site’s pages are short and the user can utilize the navigation menu on the left hand side of the page for links to other parts of the tutorial, as well as buttons that are present on every page labeled “<<Previous” – to go to the previous page of the tutorial – or “Next Chapter>>” – to go to the next page in the tutorial. Furthermore, within each page, the Schools have utilized easy-to-read headings, such as “What is HTML?” “HTML Documents = Web pages” and “What You Need,” which contextualize the text that follows and aid the reading process. Overall, the site follows a simple formula: it briefly introduces a concept in HTML and then provides a “Try It Yourself” text editor to apply the concept. Although coding jargon is used on other parts of the site, if the user follows the step-by-step process through the tutorials, it explains the terminology well.

Interactivity

First, the most useful and often used interactive component of the HTML tutorial is the “Try It Yourself” in-browser text editor. Once the user clicks the “Try It Yourself” link, he is shown a page such as the one below. The user then edits the text in the left hand box and clicks “Edit and Click Me>>” and the box on the right displays how the markup would look in a browser.

This text editor is extremely useful because it gives the user a tool for the concept in question and see the result. Of course, there could be improvements. For example, there are no recommendations on the page for alternatives or supplements to the simple concept that the user is practicing. In the example image above, it might be useful if the page provided a quick tip on how to make horizontal lines extend only 75 percent across the page. In any event, the ability to see one’s markup instantly rendered is a very useful educational tool.Although the in-browser text editors are the most important interactive component, the Web site also has other useful functions by virtue of its status as a Web site. The functionality of hyperlinks to quickly take the user to another site for information is an important component of a Web page’s interactivity. In addition, the navigation menus mentioned earlier allow the user to jump back and forth to different parts of the tutorial with ease.

Cost

The W3Schools are completely free, because they were created by individuals in the non-profit organization the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Because they are free and provide useful tools like the text editor, not to mention that the Schools were created by the governing body for Web standards, this is an invaluable resource that should be at least one part of an educational toolkit.

Resource #2: Castro, E. (2007). HTML, XHTML & CSS. Visual quickstart guide. Berkeley, CA: Peachpit Press.

Quick Evaluation Summary

Pros: The book provides a comprehensive introduction to (X)HTML and CSS in an accessible format and layout at a relatively low price.Cons: Because it is a paper book, it doesn’t have the same interactivity and concomitant benefits as the W3Schools Web site. Also, it will go out of date, whereas Web sites will be updated.

Detailed Evaluation

Accessibility As the title suggests, this book is a “visual quickstart guide” to learning HTML and related concepts. As such, the language of the book and the visual design of the book’s pages both create an accessible resource for beginning learners.

First, Castro spends a number of pages in the introduction to the book explaining very broad concepts like the histories of the Internet, the World Wide Web, Web browsers, and HTML. Even for those who have spent a lot of time on the Web, this is useful background information that provides context to the more technical content that follows. In addition, the level of the language is well within the reach of a college educated person. Furthermore, the book also has a section entitled “How This Book Works.” All of this background information on the topic of the book as well the book itself is useful for a beginner.

Second, the main body of the book is well organized in a logical manner from chapter to chapter, and even within chapters. Chapter 1 begins with the very rudimentary concepts of HTML like what is an element, a tag, and an attribute, among others. Chapter 2 explains how to begin writing an HTML document, how to save it, and how to upload it to a server. These are crucial aspects of Web page creation that weren’t covered as much in the W3Schools site. The subsequent chapters continue to unveil important concepts. Here, I want to note a design aspect of the book that distinguishes it from the W3Schools. Whereas the W3Schools separates the tutorials for HTML and CSS, Castro intermingles HTML and CSS as she discusses concepts like tables, lists and forms. This choice reflects Castro’s methodology for Web design, a methodology in accordance with current Web standards created by the W3C. Current standards state that HTML should only be used for rudimentary page structure, while Style Sheets should be used for style and page layout. For a beginner, this is a difficult concept to understand; suffice it to say, this is a positive attribute of this book, in my estimation.

Finally, I want to examine the accessibility of the book on the level of the book page. The book’s pages are relatively uniform in design and layout. For the most part, there are two columns per page. Imagine the graphic below is the book laid open on a table; the center line is the spine of the book.

Written Description of Concept and Description of Usage

Images and Visual Display of Concept and Usage

Images and Visual Display of Concept and Usage

Written Description of Concept and Description of Usage

As shown, the page is horizontally symmetrical. The written content on the far left and right side describes the concept and its application with words; the columns adjacent to the two text columns show images and visuals of the textually described content. In other words, visual and textual learners are accommodated. Since the point is to learn written languages, i.e. Hypertext Markup Language and Cascading Style Sheets, it is important to have a textual component as well as a visual one.

In summary, the language and layout of the book enables the beginner to access the book without fear of drowning in terminology and inane details. I will highlight a few interactive features next; it’s important to note that these features also contribute to the book’s accessibility.

Interactivity

Obviously, it is difficult for a bound, paper book to achieve the same interactivity as a hypertext Web page. Nonetheless, there are a few important components to the book that lend it an interactive dimension. These components allow the learner to interact with the book out of the sequence of the chapters.

The book has a series of reference sections in the back of the book. There is an (X)HTML and CSS Reference section. These are quick and useful references for someone who is in the process of creating her Web pages. Next to the referenced tag, attribute, property or value, the author has provided references to the appropriate pages where more detailed information can be found. Second, there is a list of special characters that require special coding in the HTML document. The author shows the character and how to put in the document. She also has a section on HTML tools and how useful she thinks they are. Finally, the inside back cover of book has sample colors and their hexadecimal code that is used in HTML documents.

Despite some very useful reference sections, finding content in a book can be more difficult than clicking on a link on a Web page. The functionality of the W3Schools site cannot be matched by this book.

Cost

The retail price of the book is $34.99, though it could be possible to get it used or on sale. Given the comprehensive treatment of the material by the author, $35 dollars is a good value.

Resource #3: Online Course, e.g. University of Washington Course – INFX 503

*Note: I am treating this course as an example of a beginning HTML course. There will be variations on course design depending on the instructor and the institution. I am currently enrolled in the course, which provides me access to the resources and the unique perspective of having experienced how the class design unfolds week to week.

Quick Evaluation Summary

Pros: The HTML course is the most accessible and interactive resource and, for most learners, would be the most effective resource for learning HTML.Cons: The course is by far the most expensive resource and would require significant justification to spend thousands of dollars.

Detailed Evaluation

Accessibility

First of all, the INFX course uses the two previous resources as parts of the curriculum. So, the online class, as a resource, is on a slightly different level from the other two.The INFX course has been very accommodating for beginners. Rather than having to code from scratch and perhaps get tripped up by small details, which is common in writing HTML, the course assignments for the first half of the quarter often require you to read already written HTML and correct mistakes. Then, later in the assignment for a particular week, the student might be asked to write a little HTML himself. This gradual introduction to the topic allows the student to wade into the shallow end before diving into the deep end, as it were. In short, the design of the class and how it unfolds from week to week is very conducive to learning. Rather than aimless learning, the class provides the student with direction and constraints that allow him to focus and learn more efficiently.

To examine a few of the particulars of the course design, I want to first look at the video lectures recorded by the instructor that the students are assigned to watch each week. The lectures consist of a slide presentation, sometimes with moving images, and a narration of the slides and content by the instructor. After reading the book chapters, and perhaps using the W3Schools site to apply some concepts, the lectures provide an extra layer of context as well as a slightly different take on the content. It’s always useful to compare how different sources describe a piece of content, because often the comparisons and contrasts can be illuminating and allow for a deeper understanding. On a practical side, the lectures directly deal with the content of the course’s assignments, which is important for meeting the requirements for the class.

The assignments for the course almost always include downloadable HTML files that are used for that week’s assignment. Again, the students would probably find it more accessible to deal with HTML that is already written than writing it from scratch. With these downloadable HTML files come downloadable worksheets in the form of PDFs that describe the steps to take for that week’s assignment. Overall, the tools for each week’s assignment are readily available and allow the student to focus on learning.

The class’s Web site is very well laid out and easy to use, as would be expected from a class on creating Web sites. The Web pages enable easy navigation to the desired content, and also have a Key Terms and Concepts box on every page that provides quick and useful definitions and recommendations related to Web design.

Although the class is exclusively online, i.e. there are no meetings in the “real world,” there is a social component to the class. First, every student is required to pair up with another student, or “study buddy.” In addition, the class uses the UW’s Catalyst Web Tools liberally, where there are discussion forums for asking and answering questions. This social component sets the class apart from the other two resources in this evaluation. Knowing that there are others out there who you can speak with and who have the same issues you have is a boon to a student struggling over a particular concept. This also contributes to the interactivity of the class (see next section).

All of these components to the class design make it perhaps the most accessible resource. The fact that you can talk to other human beings is the single most important aspect to its accessibility, and no other resource has that.

Interactivity

Many of the aspects of the class discussed in the Accessibility section also contribute to its interactivity. The video lectures, downloadable assignments and HTML documents, Catalyst Web Tools, and the class’s Web site are all interactive in nature. As discussed earlier, the ability to speak to other human beings about the content is invaluable and contributes to both its accessibility and interactivity. In addition, the class requires the student to complete a final project, i.e. a simple Web site. This component is extremely important because it allows the student to come away from the class with something tangible. Creating something new is perhaps the most interactive task a student can undertake. Overall, the class is the most interactive resource among the three.

Cost

If the class wins the accessibility and interactivity competition, it comes at a cost – literally. Because the class at the UW is acting as an example of a more general resource of online courses, it would be difficult to pin down one price for the class. But, suffice it to say, that any classes at a university or community college that last for a full quarter or semester are going to cost thousands of dollars. On the other hand, taking classes that progress toward a degree could have a long term benefit. Assuming the audience for this report has already completed college, it would be difficult to justify spending thousands of dollars unless it effected a promotion or change to a new job with a higher salary.

Pat Tillman

For nearly twenty years, a crowd has gathered at Fort Benning in mid-November to protest against the activities of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly called the School of the Americas) and demand its closure.

The annual event is more than just a protest. It is a gathering of the scattered fringes of the religious, political and cultural left who use the event as a platform to push ideas that range from drug legalization to abortion or even women’s ordination. Leftist Maryknoll Father Roy Bourgeois leads this gathering which includes a large collection of socialists, liberation theology advocates and anarchists. It is no surprise that the 71-year-old priest automatically incurred excommunication for openly opposing Church doctrine.

For nearly twenty years, both he and his protesters have resisted the Army’s efforts to “dialogue.” They reject outright the Army’s unconditional offers to open its doors to any who wish to review the school’s operation.

Nearly twenty years of protest calls to mind another twenty-year milestone – the fall of the Berlin Wall. In light of this commemoration, we offer some considerations.

East German construction workers building the Berlin Wall, November 20th., 1961.

A Continued Danger

On the twentieth anniversary of fall of the Berlin Wall, we might be tempted to think that the world’s great military dangers have passed. However, that is not the case. We still live in a world of violence and uncertainties. Our enemies are no longer concentrated behind an Iron Curtain but are scattered about the world in the form of radical groups and rogue nations all too willing to threaten the peace.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, one would hope that at least the outdated Marxist ideas that caused so much misery all over the world would be consigned to the dustbin of history. However, that is not the case. Guerrilla groups in Latin America like Colombia’s FARC still defend their outdated Marxist ideas through violence and bloodshed. There is still Stalinist North Korea, poverty-stricken Cuba and Communist China oppressing its people and trampling on human natural rights. There is Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela exporting his Bolivarian socialist revolution across Latin America – including the building of a nuclear program.

Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it would be hoped that the terrors of our age might also fall. However, that is not the case. Terror or the threat of terror lives as the tactic of choice among Islamic radicals who can be found in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan or Palestine. Iran’s mullahs stand ready to develop nuclear arms. Suicide bombers strike terror into whole nations and put fear into the hearts of thousands who might become the next innocent victims.

Pacifists Do Not Keep the Peace

Now more than ever, we need the soldier to keep the peace.

We note, however, that it was not the pacifists that brought down the Berlin Wall. Theirs was a constant message of concession, “dialogue,” and defeat.

When the terrible wall came crashing down, these Marxists were nowhere to be found to condemn the massive misery that lay exposed in those communist countries. They did not renounce their adherence to this system which they fought so hard to impose upon the West.

We tend to forget that it was the soldier that helped bring about the fall of the Berlin Wall. The soldier took upon himself the thankless task of confronting evil by force of arms. It was the soldier that risked all to do his duty wherever he was called to go without hesitation or complaint. The American soldier and his counterparts all over the world stood down the Communist threat in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

His services are no less needed in our days.

Colonel John W. Ripley

Thank the Heroes

Thus, we need to thank – not protest – these heroes who put their lives on the line. These heroes guarantee the peace. We live freely because they made the greatest of sacrifices – even that of life.

We remember Medal of Honor heroes like Private First Class Ross A. McGinnis who distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty when he threw himself upon a fragmentation grenade and saved four soldiers from certain serious injury or death in Iraq in December of 2006. We remember Navy Seal Michael Monsoor, who likewise unselfishly gave his life, in order to save his fellow Seals on September 29, 2006.

We can also remember heroes like the late Col. John W. Ripley whose heroism in Vietnam was legendary. These and so many more make up those legions of heroes that deserve not our scorn but our gratitude.

Where Will They Turn?

There are those who protest against the soldier. They see his role as one buttressing structures of oppression and power. They are ready to label those who still fight against Marxism as murderers and assassins. They turn a blind eye to a ruthless enemy who breaks all rules and conventions as Marxists have always done. They would deny defenseless populations the training and tools needed to defend themselves against this enemy.

In the case of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, they ignore the fact that the overwhelming majority of its graduates have committed no crime save that of wanting to keep their country safe and free. They are prepared to amplify any alleged crime of a soldier to gigantic proportions while reducing to nothing the blatant abuses of Marxists in countries like Cuba, China, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

"Who will be there to defend them?"

We ask those who protest: When the fury of the terrorists turns upon them, who will they appeal to? When their freedom is taken away with the same disregard as Colombia’s FARC guerrillas take the freedom of their innocent hostages, where will they turn? When their right to protest is met with bullets and tanks like that of Tiananmen Square, who will be there to defend them?

They will turn to the soldier who defends even those who calumniate him.

A Call to Gratitude
The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) calls upon the public to thank the heroes.

Let us thank them for standing up to the Soviet menace that lurked behind the Berlin Wall that fell twenty years ago. Let us thank those who still fight and keep our nation safe and help other nations do likewise.

Let us, of course, censor any abuses, but let us also be consistent and condemn the systemic and widespread abuses that have come from Castro’s Cuba, the FARC guerillas and other leftist movements who still uphold the outdated and iniquitous Marxist ideologies that built the infamous Berlin Wall.

As Americans, let us be proud of our heroes as they continue to fight and train others to defend their nations against those who threaten the peace.

May God protect them and their families in their daily battles around the world.
