From Tokyo to Paris…

Depuis cet été, personne dans la capitale n’a pu échapper aux publicités à syllabes virevoltantes de la marque Japonaise Uniqlo qui annonçaient l’ouverture de son flagship dans le quartier d’Opéra.

Pour présenter Uniqlo, l’enseigne se positionne sur le casualwear avec des matières de qualité (beaucoup de cashmere) et des prix bon marchés. Une espèce de H&M à la japonaise quoi.

Mais justement…Mis à part quelques collections de T.Shirts et de doudounes flashy, la marque propose des basiques.

Et pourtant, quelle ne fut ma surprise cette semaine, lors de ma première visite, de voir que ce magasin a créé une espèce d’hystérie collective! Une file de 20 mètres à l’extérieur pour rentrer…Je demande si un évènement particulier se déroulait ce jour-là, mais non. Des files de 50 mètres à l’intérieur pour acheter, les vendeurs débordés…Une preuve comme quoi la publicité, si elle est bien orchestrée, influence toujours autant le comportement des consommateurs jusqu’à les rendre prêts à tout pour des basiques!

Je profite de ce poste pour vous conseiller d’aller faire un tour (si ce n’est pas déjà fait) sur un des sites de la marque: le Tokyo fashion map!

Il se charge un peu lentement, mais ce n’est que du bonheur! Une visite interactive des quartiers de Tokyo au travers de mini-vidéos et de tokyoïtes se passant des parkas d’une vidéo à l’autre. Même s’il y a quelques problèmes de navigation parfois (il vaut mieux visiter les quartiers au hasard plutôt qu’à tout prix vouloir en voir un en particulier), ce site est addictif!  J’imagine qu’il doit exploser les records de durée de moyenne fréquentation de page par les internautes.

Mulligan’s in Marietta

SFGate (and everywhere else) reports on the outrage around a T-shirt being sold by Mulligan’s Food and Spirits in Marietta, Georgia, showing Curious George with the legend “Obama in 08.” The outrage comes not just from people who think that the image expresses a racist attitude toward Obama (ya think?) but also from the owners of the Curious George character. The bar owner’s comment that Obama and Curious George “Look so much alike” is particularly creepy.

“Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is upset with Mike Norman, owner of a Marietta, Ga., bar, for selling the shirts which show Curious George peeling a banana with ‘Obama in ‘08′ printed beneath the image.

“‘Houghton Mifflin Harcourt did not nor would we ever authorize or approve this use of the Curious George character, which we find offensive and utterly out of keeping with the values Curious George represents,’ said Richard Blake, the company’s spokesman. ‘We are monitoring the situation and weighing all of our options.’

“Norman, who began selling the shirts in late April, has said they are not meant to be racist. He said he thinks the Illinois senator and the character ‘look so much alike.’

“Bill Nigut, southeast regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, said Norman is being disingenuous.

“‘He can pretend he doesn’t understand what the message of that T-shirt is, but he knows full well that’s an offensive and demeaning stereotype used to insult African-Americans,’ Nigut said. He called on citizens not to buy the T-shirts, but stopped short of calling for a boycott of Norman’s business or denying him to speak out.”

The gentleman (“andisheh” on Flickr) who posted this image obviously has a strong opinion on this point. Or maybe he’s just lobbing a cheap joke which really isn’t very funny.

The thing that disturbs me is my own fear that these incidents will increase in the upcoming presidential contest. I have always had a deep sense of the slumbering racism of my country, and I fear that like a Lovecraftian beast this ancient evil is awakening because an African-American is running for President.

Then again, perhaps, as Obama expressed in his magnificent speech on race (transcript here) in the wake of the (first) Jeffrey Wright freakout, we as a nation are better than this.

So, I mentioned here that I was going design more often. So, I have been playing around with some fun designs. Today’s release is a fun set of Fashion Tees!

Before I decided on what direction to go with my newly found direction, I wandered the blogs and the Grid for inspiration. You know what I found? Tons of stuff that is decent designing from cheerleader outfits, to risque’ club outfits that would make a veteran rl prostitute blush and everything in between. In all of it, not too much of it would I actually wear irl. So, then I went to my closet. I have a lot of oufits! And I have a lot of outfits that I wear infrequently. I kept coming back to what I wear every evening when my day is over. And that is a dozen or so comfy Tees.

So, that’s what I made – six Tees with sassy sayings on them. As I finished the first Tee, I felt like I needed to do more, so I made a crop version of the Tee. Alas, I still felt he set was not complete, because very few things in nature come in twos. Threes and fives are more common. So I settled on three styles and made a tank.

And that’s what the set is… Three different Tee styles (a Tee, a Crop Tee and a tank). The set is sold with one of each clothing layer for each style. That’s a undershirt, shirt and jacket layer in each Tee Style (a Tee, a Crop Tee and a tank). POP QUIZ: How many items in the box? <insert Jeopardy music here> That’s right, nine (plus a landmark and a pic so you know what is being put on before putting it on). So eleven really.

I have been sooo absent from posting. I have had a few real-life issues, many of which are just lessened. So, that is good. I have also been absent from designing. Part of the funk that I was in I decided to deal with by opening my creative valves and letting the juices flow. Because of that, I have new sets of eyes that I created that got the valve opened some. I decided to call them Eye Wear. Because, well, they are eyes and ummmm you wear them. I created 7 sets of eyes: 2 Blues, 2 Greens, 2 Flashy and 1 Brown set. Each set comes with six unique eyes and with a simple reflection. That’s 42 unique eyes total with a simple reflection. I also created the same sets with a window reflection in them (eyes to the soul and all).

Once the tap was open I decided to make something more back in my normal zone. So, I created understated. understated is the mix and match outfit that you wear and look smoking hot in but you don’t look like you are trying too hard. It comes in either black or grey. There is a lot of flexibility here. A plaid flexi-prim skirt with belt. I included the belt and skirt seperate and as one primmy unit as it may be easier to fit on some shapes in either configuration and mean a lot less adjusting. In any case you get a prim belt to wear with any outfit as a bonus. 

It also comes with four tank tops. Short and long versions. Each version comes in a transparent and opaque version. That’s right, two plus two equals four.

The jacket and pants come as a matching set, but can be worn seperately. The pants come with prim flare legs and the jacket comes with prim cuffs. The textures were created so you do not have to have the legs or cuffs for it to look good if they are not your thang.

A cute pair of plaid panties that are great for hanging out in with the tank to make your friends eyes pop out. These were really unnecessary, but I just had to make them. Oh, and glitch pants for the skirt to round it out. You can find them at my new store in Essence Island.
