CD cover to come

(Independent)

IT’S a toss-up what grabs the attention when the Conglomerate plays live. Is it the distinctive voice of Harry Angus, as much a musical instrument as a vehicle for lyrics, or his showmanship? Whether playing trumpet one-handed or while gripping a stubby, Angus is all madcap spontaneity and fun.
At the recent Bennetts Lane launch of its second CD, the band — Angus and Ollie McGill (keyboards) of Cat Empire fame, with Jules Pascoe (double bass) and Harry Shaw-Reynolds (drums) — had not played together for more than a year. They improvised freely to a captivated crowd. Angus’s voice was at times a call to prayer, then a didgeridoo.
The album, recorded in 2005, is different, with string sections, but there is a definite stage show feel.
Favourites Yakini (The Last Gorilla) and One Star Hotel, with Angus’s humorous, intelligent lyrics, display all the musicians’ considerable talent.

Welcome to my part rant and part Canadian music post. The Canadian music part of the post has to do

Welcome to my part rant and part Canadian music post.

The Canadian music part of the post has to do with this neat little band I was recently turned on to. They’re called Hey Ocean and are from Vancouver, BC. The main vocalist is a chick who almost does a spoken/rap/neatly-displaced-singing thing that after a while is somewhat infectious. At least in the few songs I’ve listened to. They’re on their way through Edmonton and area shortly (then afterwards moving on to some shows with Cat Empire) …and if going by this video, might be something of a thing to watch for if you’re into watching those things – if you know what I mean. Here’s one of their tunes called ‘A Song About California’.

The rant part will be short and sweet…
I hate bands sometimes. Especially ones I’m in.

Was that short and sweet enough

The first time I heard Cat Empire, was when I was living with two aussie girls. One evening in the summer I was tired and lazy, much to their chagrin. They put Cat Empire on and said: “this song will make you want to come out.” Its true, I’ve tried it many times with friends and it has yet to fail. It reminds me of the summer, of festivals, and open air concerts.

Yup – the title says it all. Folks not only are the Cat Empire an amazing band, they are proba

Yup – the title says it all.

Folks not only are the Cat Empire an amazing band, they are probably the coolest people in the world. Well, some of them are…anyways

They would call for a break down and as a crowd we threw down our party landmines!

Just before the last chorus of every song, they would just jam it up – an electricity of sound propelled by sheer energy and enthusiasm is probably how I could best describe their performance. Of course if they were not so enthused – damn they did a good job pretending.

The thing is, unlike most gigs – the Empire’s fan bases normally doesn’t include scene kids who want a black eye as a trophy., but in saying that their fan basis arn’t usually ones who are overly sophisticated, its a fine line on the inbetween that made an much wanted atmosphere – was relxaed, fun and almost welcoming. In saying that there were a few “I’m a jazz fan clad in black now go away and stop talking to me as your preventing me from smoking this fine cigerette”, but not too many…so twas a win win.

Now when I left my house – I was like “meh, why bother dressing up” I didnt put make up on, didn’t even straighten my hair, I threw on my jeans I scored for $8 from Vinnies, a singlet and my black “I-have-too-much-shit-in-my-pocket-but-this-hides-it-well” shirt – so bascially a fat shit to hide everything)for the record, shirt has hole in it). Threw on some red chucks for color, a belt for shape – and a hat to be pimping (but of course, why else would I need one) and I headed out.

Orignally, I got lost. I have never been to the Tivoli..I have never needed to. So some lovely people walked me as far as the Jubilee Hotel in Brisbane as a token of gratitude for saving her life – she almost killed herself due to her wonderful blue 6 inch heels. And I wondered on in…
The girl I was meant to be meeting bailed on me. Much to my disappointment. And my only other friend there didn’t admittedly want me hanging out with him and his other mates. I found a decent spot every intention of not moving for the night.
The opening band – Paprika Balkanicus – were pretty fucking sweet, now I can’t openly form an opinion on them without prior knowledge of their music/evidence….LOL like I actually form on an opinion on truth – damn I’m funny.
No – seriously – those guys got skills. On the one song basis I saw of them, I can fully understand why Empire would have the open up for them – very lively, energetic and into it – awesome.

Eventually Empire came on – and OF COURSE – they had to open with ‘So Many Nights’ and to any fans who have been lucky to have had a seat at one of their gigs -( don’t you think props should be given to Cameron and Ross? Those guys were pumping it – the whole swaying back and worth – was strangely…I can’t describe it, I fail at writing but point remains – Sirs; my hat salute to you!) you will know what I mean when I say ‘wow’ those guys can pump it.
Now – Empire – if you happen to read this, I know you guys knew I was there – thats why ya’ll sang my favorite songs (was a secret dedication folks, only the peeps involved knew about it i.e. me), they jumped from Two Shoes to their newest album ‘So Many Nights’ which is available at most good record stores – JBHiFi (hint hint).

The bunch beside me – which can only be described as rowdy – were struggling to take photos, so I offered to take them so everyone can “get in on this”, after a few shots, introductions followed, had some drinks – we all held each other and swayed to ‘No Longer There’ while screaming out of tune vocals at the top of our lungs drunkly ensure ourselves ‘Damn, I could give Felix a run for his money..”, at one point I was questioned on my friends/transport home and unfortunatly I admitted to a bunch of strangers that not only was I stuck in the valley til 4am, but I had rocked up alonesome.
This resulted in an unanimous desicion – that we will all go get on the piss after the gig. It was after this point that I was then informed the guy who I had been holding up all night due to him being exhausted from drinking so much alcohol was a broseuf to DJ Jumps the bands DJ. So heck yes I got to go back stage – and let me tell you something:

It was almsot disappointing.
Three band members were there and the looks/relaxed notions of everyone else in the room informed us that we were infact the only nonfamily/friend relative in that room. There was no wild party, there were no strippers, no cocaine, no beer (major disappointment) it was all rather tame for seven guys who just had four Brisbane women flash them while on stage and have hundreds of people (male and female) scream “HAVE MY BABIES”
And I have a confession – I did not know any of their names. I have been listening to the Cat Empire for four years and I have never bothered to look up names….why? So I can imagine what our future kids could look like? And I can scribble “Ms. Alyxandra “Last Name” on my notebook? So I actually had to be introduced…Felix didn’t look to appealed by this…
One girl in our group was so gorgeous – Felix (lead singer) apparently is her future husband – he doesn’t know yet – and when he said hed get a photo with her – my god she almost fell off her chair. Every orgasm she could ever physcially had seemingly came at that moment, she actually dragged me out side – walking well away from the door – so she could jump up and down screaming ‘OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD’….leaving the “party” she was singing some song substituing words for his name….*sigh*
Anyway – my lil brother loves Cat Empire, so I really wanted to tell them my brother and sister listened to them because they are probably sick of people telling them they are awesome – but they are the reason siblings started playing certain instruments, I think being affiliated with making kids want to play music is much cooler then some chick who dies if you walk past her.

The coolest of guys was Ross – he wa bitchin. Not only did I have a conversation with him involving Johnny Cash that didnt involve “So did you see ‘Walk the line’? (until one chick came over and was like ‘did you see that movie about Johnny Cash?’, but he was a really cool guy…
Thats always appreciated.
Kind of was annoying how the other chicks who had managed to get into the back stage area (but not into the ‘green room’) where only intrested in seeing Felix…just shits me when people think a band is made up of the singer. Its a band people – there are many more. Those two chicks who came along didn’t actually realise who Ross was till I was stoked to have gotten a photo with ‘Ross from Cat Empire’, one actually asked me ‘Oh is he from the Cat Empire? Which one is he?…’ /FACEPALM

Anyways, we said our goodbyes – I sold some dude my pimp hat for $25 (PROFIT???) and we headed off to Ricks – Leon, the dude who got us back stage, was so fucking wasted it was hilarious! Eventually we all stumbles to Maccas – where Leon convinced us he needed cheeseburgers…because OH YES…he needs em cheeseburgers…

Ricks – adult emo scene. The amount of scene kids, I thought I was at a well lit blue-light disco…was terrible…After only a few Peroni’s (ma new favorite beer by the way) we ditched that lame scene and headed to Jess’ house armed with Coronas, a massage chair and MC Sange – a french rapper – we chilled for about an hour…eventaully time came for my train to be pullin’ in so me and a wonderful guy called Adrien said goodbye and he walked me to the station.

We got to the station and realised we had to wait for over an hour, of which he said no dice lets go for a walk. We walked all along the Story Bridge – and sat down at a bench at the end; and we talked for almost three hours…was amazing all we did was talk from everything to jobs, cancer, france – we even talked about genetically modified food – eventually a cab pulled up and it was suggested I go home, when informed a taxi would $70 I refused and insisted on getting the train home – it was 5am, there was trains going, I just had to walk a suburb or two.
Adrien was not liking this idea so he said he’d try and ask the cabbie for a favour – and he paid my fare in advance, all $80….it was probably the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. I ended up crawling into bed at 6am thinking of all the things that had gone down…

I didn’t even get his number just his full name -so FACEBOOK STALKKKKK – is totally in order. But it just showed that there are genuinely nice people out there…thought I should share that story with you all.

So I wanted to tell you all about my wonderful night @ the Cat Empire, but I feel the romantic story of Adrien had to be throw in there – the moral of my story I guess, is that kindness to strangers is not nessicary, but sometimes – can be totally worth it.
Translation: Me taking some hommies photos for them and making sure they didn’t spill their beer scored me backstage passes to the Cat Empire, think they would have done this if I was a bitch?
The second moral would be nice things can happen. There is genuinely nice people out there, so don’t distrust anyone.
Translation: It’s pretty self explanitory.

Food for thought my dearies…
We were introduced to them by our dear friends, Dave and Dessie. They bought us tickets to see Cat Empire when we went to visit them in Melbourne in Dec 2006. The music is so unique, the concert was amazing and it was a special evening with friends being introduced to something so new and vibrant. It was a gift that has lasted long beyond that evening.

Most of us have all done this at some point in our lives.

Hiya Speck,

how you doing? I’m well. Famished today and yesterday. Have thankfully bought a heap of fruit to work so have eaten all the way from 7:45 am until now, when I’m onto my lunch. It feels like I’m finally starting to fill the hole. I hope you are getting some of it.

You have made your presence noticeable over the past few days. Well, I think so. My stomach seemed to ‘pop’ visibly within a day after those horrendous pains I experienced on Friday. I can now officially not do-up any of my old pants. Last week I could get them done up, though they were getting a bit tight when I sat. Today, no chance. I need to buy one of those stretchy bits of elasticy-stuff that let you wear your old pants basically undone but prevent your knickers from showing right on through. Today I’m just wearing a longer t-shirt, so its all covered but all is undone and free. I got some maternity jeans last week, so jeans are fine, but I need to go and get some other pants. Some of my skirts still fit if I hike them down.

Besides feeling bigger and having slightly uncomfortably tight clothes, its pretty great feeling overall! I now have a little rounded bump which feels good to rub, saying hello to you! I have to remember not to do it too much in public else I look like a freak. I wonder if you can feel just the rubbing – one of the books said you could feel a massage if I did one. I might give it a go again tonight when I’m lying in bed and see if you respond.

Hope you’re well and enjoyed dancing to Cat Empire on Saturday night. I did!

love you
mum

So today has passed rather well I think. I started off doing the usual – waking up. Then I mov

So today has passed rather well I think. I started off doing the usual – waking up. Then I moved onto making some muffins. I’d tried two recipes thus far – one was a cake recipe, the other a muffin recipe. But there was a problem. The cake recipe was too fatty/rich, and the muffin one was tasteless. So what did I do? invented a recipe! That’s what I did.

I chucked a bit of this, splashed a bit of that, another bit of that, and voila! I have amazing muffins, with half the fat of the cake recipe. YAY! Hurrah for me. Come to my house if you would like one.

When I’d done that, I arranged the printing of some photos, and started fiddling around, looking for inspiration for some art.

WELL! This is what happened:

So see that bit of paper that ‘Long live living, if living can be this’ is written on? I made it. 8 hours ago, it was a white bit of paper. Of course, I made a lot more of it than THAT, but unfortunately, that’s all I used.

I also transformed that red paper to be a lot nicer than it was. I had an enormous amount of fun this morning/arvo, as you can possibly see

The lyrics on there, you MUST check out/read. I only put 2 verses and the chorus on, but you should read all of them. They are AMAZING! Inspiring, check. Astounding, check. In fact, if you’ve never heard Miserere, you should SO listen to it. I’m sure it’s on Youtube or something. In fact, here it is:

Take note of the guy with the long hair and weird face. His name is Ollie McGill. He is my hero!!!!!!!!!!!!! My LOVE! He’s great. Amazing. You should watch videos of him on keys. He’s a freak dude! You will be astounded if you have any idea/respect of/for the keyboardists of this world. Seriously. Do it. (doitdoitdoit!).

Yeah so it’s been quite a day. And to top it all off, I watched Shrek 2 on VHS!!!!Now I thought VHS had died before that came out, but no, it’s on VHS. HAHA! Those things are hilariously unpractical.

Well adieu my friends, the time to do something else has come upon me. Fare thee well!

“Decolonization is always a violent phenomenon… . Decolonization, which sets out to change the order of the world, is, obviously, a programme of complete disorder… . In the colonies it is the policeman and the soldier who are the official, instituted go-betweens… . Non Violence is an attempt to settle the colonial problem around a green baize table… Compromise is very important in the phenomenon of decolonization, for it is very far from being a simple one…”
– Frantz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth

“They would do well to read Fanon; for he shows clearly that this irrepressible violence is neither sound and fury, nor the resurrection of savage instincts, nor even the effect of resentment: it is man re-creating himself. I think we understood this truth at one time, but we have forgotten it — that no gentleness can efface the marks of violence; only violence itself can destroy them.

“The native cures himself of colonial neurosis by thrusting out the settler through force of arms. When his rage boils over, he rediscovers his lost innocence and he comes to know himself in that he himself creates his self. Far removed from his war, we consider it as a triumph of barbarism; but of its own volition it achieves, slowly but surely, the emancipation of the rebel, for bit by bit it destroys in him and around him the colonial gloom. Once begun, it is a war that gives no quarter. You may fear or be feared; that is to say, abandon yourself to the disassociations of a sham existence or conquer your birthright of unity. When the peasant takes a gun in his hands, the old myths grow dim and the prohibitions are one by one forgotten. The rebel’s weapon is the proof of his humanity.”
– Jean-Paul Sartre, Preface to The Wretched of the Earth

Not understanding, not even wishing to see, the depth of rage against domination poses a serious anthropological problem. After all, how can political leaders envision and order, military planners design and implement, and civilian citizens vote for and support unleashing massive violence against complete strangers, and then stand back with indignation and wonder, “why does the world hate us?” How does it become “mainstream” to reject any hint of a discussion of the “root causes of 9-11″ as nothing more than leftist babble (or worse: terrorist apologia)? How does history get reduced to the shortest time-scale possible to produce the most convenient self-justification imaginable? How could reasonable and intelligent human beings expect “shock and awe” to result in their being greeted as liberators in Iraq, and when that fails to materialize, wonder aloud with mouths agape, “Is it a cultural misunderstanding? Did we make some mistakes? Maybe it’s something about our hand gestures?” What accounts for that degree of numb insensitivity and how it gets mass produced and institutionalized, funded as science even?

If violence destroys and dehumanizes, is that not an absolute “fact”? Can violence ever be “relative”? Many will justify recourse to violence as an act of spontaneous self-defense — and some will not, including those who have acted very violently in the most unreflexive, unplanned, self-defense only to find themselves deeply sickened by the consquences of their response. On what bases does one comprehend the counter-violence of the oppressed as liberating, as creative, as re-humanizing?

When do certain acts, practices, and consequences get labeled as “violence” and what are the “weapons”? Is not all opposition necessarily destructive at some level, and if destruction is not violent, then what is violence? Why do some forms of opposition, protest, of pushing back against impositions and oppression, get labeled as creative and productive, while others are intellectually decimated as barbaric inversions, “more of the same”? (Gimme Culture put up a beautiful video of a young boy’s interview with John Lennon on some of these very questions. The conclusion there appears to be: violence reinforces injustice, violence tells the oppressor that his mode is the right one.)

I do not pretend to have satisfactory answers, and I hardly wish to produce a “lecture” at this hour. This is meant to preface three highly charged music videos below, including one so pugnacious that a collaborator strongly recommended that I not link to it. I will start with that one first, and hopefully hear back from some of you with your opinions on the messages of these videos.

“THAT HATE AMERIKKKA BEAT”

It’s kind of Shubel Morgan at Proletarian Productions to take requests, and produce a video with that special “hate Amerikkka beat” right out front, and kind to increase the “agitation ratio” in this video that revels in pounding imperial domination and capitalist inequality. This is electronic Maoism, and it is totally uncompromising. There is only one kind of American, and that is the Amerikkkan, and it is good to hate Amerikkka:

BOB DYLAN, “MASTERS OF WAR”

Listen to the words sung by Bob Dylan about American “masters of war”:

And I hope that you die
And your death’ll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I’ll watch while you’re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand over your grave
‘Til I’m sure that you’re dead.

Their weapons are their instruments they say, killing opponents with an argument. Laughing, creative, vibrant, alive, and more than just a hint of Caribbean influences. Winning battles in dancehalls; the armory contains imagination, symbols, songs; nobody dies, only attitudes, and allies are won as minds are changed, and if more people were like their raving audiences, there would be less room for spreading lies to justify war.

When I saw the tickets advertised in the Sun the day they came out, I just knew I had to go. Unfortunately, it took a while to organise people and buy the tickets, so we ended up with Reserved Row S tickets (which I guess were pretty good). Only managed to catch the last 10 or so minutes of Ash Grunwald’s act, due to the lengthy line and the fact we only arrived half an hour or so before gates opened. Though not a fan of his music, his enthusiam (and obvious skill) was good to see.

Shortly after, The Beautiful Girls started playing. I was quite disappointed (having heard good things about them) and went off to purchase a souvlaki. Their music was entirely bland and unoriginal, consisting of very little more than a couple of basic chords and dull bass lines– what one might expect of a high school band. The next act more than made up for the disappointment of The Beautiful Girls. Blue King Brown were fantastic as usual (this being the fourth time I’d seen them). A fantastic synthesis of many musically talented individuals, through whose music came an incredible sense of rhythm and fun. Especially impressive was the percussion section- the drummer and percussionist had an incredible sense of rhythm. They did a fantastic job of priming the crowd for the main item.

The Cat Empire were amazing. The talented musicianship, intense rhythms, catchy melodies and the pervading sense of a good time communicated through their albums pales in comparison to what is delivered by a live show. Although there was a focus on songs from the newest album So Many Nights, it was fantastic to see they did not neglect their earlier crowd-pleasing masterpieces. Unfortunately (but obviously), they played their worst-ever song No Longer There (the flaccidity of which is incomprehensible compared to their otherwise excellent body of work). Extended improvisations from the Empire Horns (Ross Irwin and Kieran Conrau on trumpet and trombone respectively), the virtuostic Ollie McGill on keys and drummer Will Brown were a fantastic addition to the well-known studio-recorded tracks. Highlights of the show included the four dancers during Sly and the two dancers (featuring guest guitarist and percussionist) during Two Shoes, which was a visual treat. The night was powerfully ended by the encores: new track The Darkness and all-time favourite The Chariot (which we were to sing/hum/whistle for the rest of the night). A fantastic night out, supported by amazingly talented Blue King Brown and others. Much more than well worth the $65 ticket price!!

Sentimentul trait la 4 dimineata, pe plaja, intre o luna plina, in apogeul luminozitatii, si o mare de argint ce-si leagana usor valurile spre tarm… of, I want it back, macar pentru o secunda in plus
