Do you guys ever believe in fate?  I sort of do sometimes.  At least I do a little tonight.

Three years ago I was driving my car to work.  I had recently graduated from college and was  embarking on one of the worst personal  years I’ve ever lived through.  I’m sure some of you out there can relate.  It was two years before I finally wised up, so not the best of times.

Anyway, like I said, I was driving my car and listening to NPR.  I caught the tail end of a song that had this great simple piano riff and beautiful voice over it.  I loved it.  I couldn’t wait for the DJ to tell me who it was, but he never mentioned who the song was by (bad DJ!).  I was on a quest,  I was determined!  Surely with the internet it couldn’t take that long, right? Is three years a long time?

The only reason why I found it at all was because a certain chain of events was set off recently by my deciding to take my desire to make music more seriously (see Julian Casablancas post).  Two weekends ago I found myself talking to my friend Ana, another singer, about how we both wanted to be in a band.  Ana and I decided to try to sing together.  She sent me a list of songs she felt comfortable playing on the guitar, one of which was Cat Power’s cover of Sea of Love.  We decided that this would be one of the songs we would perform for our friends.  Last Friday night, before our practice session, I decided to listen to the three Cat Power songs I have on my ipod, never having been into her much before.  I realized that, although I don’t love her music, there are elements to it that I definitely relate to, so perhaps I should get over myself and look her up sometime.

This all brings me to tonight.  Ladies and gentlemen, I have had a very trying day.  Just one of those where nothing seems to be going right.  I decided to turn on some Cat Power and see how I felt about it rather than going to my usual “today sucks” tracks.  I went to the album from which I knew two songs, You Are Free, and played the first song.  I couldn’t believe my ears.  The song I had been obsessively searching for for three years was right at my finger tips and had been all along.

As I basked in this discovery, I decided to look her up and read some more about her.  What did I find?  Cat Power, or Chan Marshall, is a recovering addict/alcoholic.

I found this old NYTimes article where she goes into quite a bit of detail surrounding her struggle and recovery process.  She brings up some interesting points.  Sobriety meant to her, at least at that point, that she had only had 7 drinks in 7 months.  By AA standards, and probably most other peoples, this does not count for much, but really – whatever works, right?  Well that was three years ago, and by all accounts, she’s still doing well.

They also have this video recording of her talking about her personal battles.  This just made me love her so much.  She talks about how much she loves Mary J. Blige for her strength and how much the changes that MJB went through helped her in her sobriety, maybe I should tell Cat Power that she’s done the same for someone like me.  Thank you, Cat Power.

I can’t help but feel a little spooked by all of this coming together.  I realize this probably is meaningless to anyone out there reading this, but it meant a lot to me tonight.  I just wanted to share it in case anyone else can relate.

Oh, and here’s the song that I finally found. The song is rumored to also be about a famous addict.  One who didn’t survive it, Kurt Cobain  (Also referenced in my Julian Casablancas post).

Somehow I feel like all of this is telling me I’m doing the right thing.

Cinema seems to have witnessed a resurgence of 3-D films over the past year.  Something that I thought had been ditched in the 1980’s seems to be being re-explored as a means of pulling us further into the stories that unfold before our eyes.  Is this a fad aimed at children or will we see cinema forever altered by revisiting ideas from an earlier age?

3-D cinema is designed to bring depth.  Everything literally takes on a whole new dimension.  We may feel self conscious or look silly with those 3-D glasses on, but when we are with a group of people with a similar focus our awkwardness seems irrelevant and our resistance dissipates instantly.

How often do I walk through life, caught up in my own little world, missing a whole other realm?

How often does my desire to fit in prevent me from seeing things as they really are?

It has been a priviledge in recent weeks to be assisting in leading my first Alpha Course.  It has been interesting to discover what the tenets of our faith are seen to be.  It has been inspiring to see the giftings and genuine love of HIWWC as she leads the sessions.  It has been refreshing to hear peoples’ ideas and experiences and to have a place where those are validated and listened to rather than the leaders doing most of the talking.  It has been a joy to see people begin to “get it” or nudge a bit closer with no-one ramming an agenda, but, rather, simply, holding out an offer. 

I have loved to hear questions asked, clarity gained and to catch even glimpses of lives taking on a whole new dimension and people gaining a different perspective and, perhaps, in time, a fresh world-view…

TV: Gotta say Curb Your Enthusiasm. Sunday night’s episode was really just top notch. I’m a recent convert to the Curb cult, but with episodes like “Table Reading”, I’m pretty sure that I’m in for life.

Music: “The Dark End of the Street” by Dan Penn and Chips Moman. Holy shit that’s an amazing song. I’ve probably listened to 5 different versions of this song within the last week and, even though I’m a little embarrassed to admit it, the Commitments and Cat Power versions are my favorites. There seems to be two different ways to play this tune: really digging into and embracing the minor chord built off the 7th scale degree in the verse, and shying away from it. These two versions own that chord and the melody around it so hard, and it makes me shake to hear something that beautiful.

Books: Kurt Vonnegut’s Hocus Pocus. This is a book that I’ve probably read 5 times in as many years, but every time I read it I get a little more out of it. That man has an uncanny skill for tackling pretty much EVERYTHING in one book while still providing a really entertaining and focused plot.

Food: Trader Joe’s Mac’n'Cheese. A blend of 4 non-dairy gourmet cheeses on top of delicious noodles. Who’s gunna argue?

Bar: SkyBar. It’s not really too fancy, and the gimmick of the telescope is not too in your face. That’s why I dig that place. Also $2 wells are pretty sweet too.

Restaurants: B-Line. Eat one of their carne asada breakfast burritos with their salsa and tell me it’s not love. I dare you.

Last Saturday, Kristen and I were talking about the music history workshops we taught with some bad-ass GRCA alums for the Girls Now! conference. As you can imagine, it’s hard to pare down nearly a century’s worth of female contributions to popular music into a 75-minute PowerPoint presentation and have it be fun and interactive as well. Thus, we made sure to include many music videos and performance clips that hopefully engaged our girl attendees. One such clip was Christina Aguilera’s Grammy performance of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” apparently beloved by Patti Smith. Afterwards, Kristen mentioned that it was possible to do an entire section on cover songs and wished we had more time to highlight and discuss more interesting examples.

Too right, Kristen. In fact, I think I started this section of the blog to cull together noteworthy cover songs, as I think covers are fascinating. What does song selection and interpretation say about the artist? How do their personae, generic alignments, and identity markers give the source material new meaning? What does it mean for Solange Knowles — aka Ms. “Fuck the Industry (Signed Sincerely)” — to cover an indie rock song like Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness Is The Move,” which was originally inspired by Wim Wenders’s Wings of Desire and includes a sample of “Bumpy’s Lament” in her version? What does it mean for Cat Power to adopt the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction” as a signature song and create several arrangements of it ranging from stripped-down folk to soulful rave-up? How does Tori Amos blow apart Eminem’s misogynistic murder fantasy in ”‘97 Bonnie and Clyde” by orienting herself as the dead wife in the trunk?

(Note: For further insight into the last song mentioned, I recommend reading Lori Burns and Alyssa Woods’s “Authenticity, Appropriation, Signification: Tori Amos on Gender, Race, and Violence in Covers of Billie Holiday and Eminem.” Also, I might need to get around to unpacking the cover art for Amos’s Strange Little Girls at some point.)

Continuing why I hope to be an on-going discussion, tonight I selected two songs originally recorded by James Brown and Sam Cooke. ”It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” has always seemed to me to be an ode to chauvinism. ”A Change Is Gonna Come,” however, is an anthem for social change that came to define the Civil Rights Movement. But think about what additional meanings these songs may have when performed by Christina Aguilera and Sharon Jones.

Well Iowa city, I have about three Radioloveless shows left before I leave the KRUI airways for good. Two shows will consist of my favorite tracks to hear, thus the title of my post. Kenneth lancou, em parceria com o coletivo frances Surface to Air, um livro da grife Loveless ha algum tempo atras, se voces conferirem esse trabalho hoje em dia vao ver como o projeto ainda e  atual, as tendencias usadas naquela epoca continuam ate hoje. Isso me faz concluir que ele aprendeu muito com Lachapelle e tem muito pela frente com seu imenso talento.

Bon, aujourd’hui, j’ai besoin de toi. Je vais avoir des vacances en décembre et je vais en profiter pour m’offrir 3 ou 4 jours à New York (après le 16). J’en ai marre de bouquiner des guides verts, des Routards, des sites internet de tourismes et tout, alors je te donne l’occasion de partager ici les bons plans que tu as déjà expérimenté là-bas, les choses à pas louper, les choses moins nécessaires… les endroits à ne pas manquer, les endroits à éviter. Grizzly Bear

The New Year’s Falls Music & Arts Festival, Pyramid Rock Festival, Field Day, Days Like This!, Big Day Out, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Good Vibrations and the list goes on. Nothing like summer festivals to get out there and check out some extraordinary bands. If you’re going to any of these, lucky you. If not, you might want to consider the odd sideshow or two. I am heading to Lorne Falls Festival again this year and can not wait to kick my boots off and lie in the sun. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Editors and Grizzly Bear are my festival favourits. All of them are doing sideshows in Sydney in early January. Yeah Yeah Yeahs will hit Hordern Pavilion, while Grizzly Bear have just announced the date for their third show at the Recital Hall, as part of Sydney Festival. Second time around, I’m quite keen to see Moby, also performing at Sydney Opera House, and the very fun live  Norweigan electro rockers Datarock. The Temper Trap, Sarah Blasko, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Dappled Cities and Yves Klein Blue are my local favorite picks. And as always, I can’t wait to hear bands I haven’t quite had the chance to hear yet like The View, The Phenomenal Handclap Band and White Rabbits. White Rabbits are doing a side gig at the Oxford Art Factory in the new year as well.

Cat Power

Now, Days Like This! is not necessarily my type of festival, but boy was I happy to see Cat Power on the performers’ bill. I’m a sucker for female singers with breathy voices, and hers is one of my favourites. I will see Cat Power backed by the Dirty Delta Blues (with Jim White from Dirty Three) perform at Waves in Towradgi as her only Sydney (or 60 km south of) side gig.

The Decemberists

I have never been to Big Day Out, but I have managed to catch a few sideshows in the past. This time around I’ll be seeing the Portland, Oregon-based rock band The Decemberists. It’s been a while since I started tracking their tour schedule expecting to see some dates for their, I believe, first ever down under tour. I can not wait to indulge in their theatrical indie folk extravaganza. They will not be doing the Hazards of Love show, which is completely understandable, but a bit sad since I have placed it to sit comfortably within my ‘top 10 albums of 2009′ list. The Decemberists will play at the Metro Theatre.

Procrastination has made its match in my dear friend, Doranne’s killer stare.. So here I am finally penning (typing) down my very very first entry!

As I patiently await with bated breath for all the awesome gigs that are coming to our shores (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Cat Power, The Killers!, Muse, Kings of Convenience, and Andrew Bird), I have been very vigilant to to ensure I am going to be at all the abovementioned.

As I steadily prepare for  my musical odyssey, from “Maps” to “Greatest”, I stop at Muse and ponder over the playlist. With my mood (very discouraged at the moment) dictating my choice, I decide that “Invincible” is beckoning to me.. to recoil and recall the sensory (orgasmic) experience my angel of music, Matt Bellamy, gave us back in 2007.

For all who has read this and dismiss it as ramblings of a crazed fan, you are absolutely right.

To Yun who witnessed with me the awesomeness that is Matt Bellamy, as I listen to “Invincible”, I can still remember how we screamed along to Matt’s beautiful and haunting vocals.

And for all of you, who just like me, is feeling very discouraged lately, let us all youtube “Invincible” to consult Matt for some advice…

Tonight we can truly say, together we’re invincible.

Salah satu coretan grafis favoritku. Setiap orang kan selalu memiliki cap tangan. Dan tidak pernah sama. Jadilah kekuatan, saat digunakan. Cat Power? Ada sebuah kisah tentang itu.

I’m stoked! Really excited. I bought tickets for Cat Power next year and tickets for The Killers come out soon. I love me some good music and good concerts! I know I’ve been to The Killers before but if Brandon Flowers is going to be in the same country as I am, how can I not be in the vicinity sharing the same air? You see the logic? Good.

Right now, I’m waiting for my T-Swizzle CD to be burnt. I am getting tired of the radio (although that ‘Fireflies’ song has really pretty lyrics and an awesome video to match) and Swifty’s music makes me happy. I know it’s a little bit silly to be so into her music but…(words of wisdom coming up, hang on to your seats) somewhere this year I realized that few things make me happy anymore. So when they do, I cling on to them. I think that’s okay. I like cheesy country-pop music by a blond-haired girl, for example! I like that my friends all wrote “LOVE” on their arms today because it’s International To Write Love On Her Arms Day.

I’ll be performing at the Malay Heritage Center over the weekend with shows at 5pm and 8pm on both days. It’s my first try at acting since graduating in 2005! I might possibly be the equivalent of Jessica Simpson on-screen, but that would be entertaining to watch, too, wouldn’t it? It’s also free. Which I think is great.

Holler if you want to watch The Killers on Jan. 24th! I’m making a list. I’ll probably check it more than twice.

My true love is north: I’ve been enjoying this Canadian band for months now. Join me. The Weather Station is fronted by singer Tamara Lindeman. Their latest album, “The Line,” is made up of dark folk elegies about personal loss, set to simple acoustic melodies meant to break your heart. A few reviewers are calling this album the female companion to Bon Iver’s “For Emma, Forever Ago.” Well, that’s not a bad description. Lindeman’s voice, which can sound a bit like Cat Power or Joni Mitchell, is a vehicle that transports listeners to where ever they want to go. One of my favorites is a song called “East.” Try out these gorgeous lyrics: “The ceiling lights have bruised your face / Your wings are tattered / Your feathers are disgrace / You are a bird that needs her space / But I want your heart … just in case.”
