In 1975, British singer-songwriter and international superstar Cat Stevens experienced a near death experience that led him to an unforeseen journey towards Islam. This interesting video reveals the reasons behind Cat’s diappearance from stardom and his spiritual journey towards faith and Islam. It shows how and why Islam appealed to and inspired Cat and made him rethink life.

While he garnered some attention in his native England, he found virtually no audience in the U.S. and, out of frustration, considered ending his efforts. But he had a backlog of decent material, and so decided to give it one more shot. His fourth album, Tea For Tillerman, rang the bell upon its release on November 23, 1970, reaching #8 in the U.S., #11 in Canada, #20 in the U.K. and, eventually #206 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 500 albums.

Tea For Tillerman’s push up the charts benefited from the big single “Wild World,” which was issued in advance of the album and created the buzz Stevens needed to break into the U.S. market. But the album carried its own weight beyond the single. Four songs in particular, “Father And Son,” “Longer Boats,” “Where Do The Children Play?” and “Hard Headed Woman” have become timeless favorites for Cat’s devotees and casual fans alike.

Tea For Tillerman was the first of five straight U.S. Top 10 albums for Stevens. It’s available as a CD from Amazon (click here) and as downloadable tracks from iTunes (click here).

A Day of Rest

As I sit blogging this morning the house is quiet, the wind is gently blowing the wind chimes and the antique clock is rhythmically setting the pace for the day.

I am reminded of a picture that hangs in my Mom’s living room. I remember this print well. It is an English countryside and in the distance is a beautiful Catherdal church with “folks” dressed in their Sunday “best” strolling in the early morning light of the day on their way to church.

Along the way are reminders of the importance of this day in that community. The sheep are resting, the plow stocks are resting, the cattle are grazing…..everywhere you look there is a reminder of this pictures namesake….”A Day of Rest”

Today is that day for me. This day was created to allow us time to rest. Cat Stevens sings about it in “Morning HAs Broken” as he sings about re-create….it is time for me to rest and re-create. It is my prayer for you today that you can rest and re-create.

Senator Joe Lieberman has begun hearings on the Fort Hood tragedy. When asked what was the purpose of the hearings, Lieberman said it was to determine how this “terrorist” act took place and what role Government agencies played (or as Lieberman has signaled, did not play). How can a US Senator start out an investigation with the conclusions already in mind?

“This is how rationing begins. This is the little toe in the edge of the water,” said Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) at a press conference on Capitol Hill. Ms. Blackburn is one of many Republican politicians who jumped on the announcement that yearly mammograms for woman under 50 were statistically unjustified (unless indicated by the woman’s medical history). How can the Country discuss health care reform when a large number of people reject science?

In response to the announcement that, finally after 7 years, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind and planner of 9/11 would be tried in civil court in New York City, some sad and discouraging words were utter by voices reputed to be Senate Republican leaders. Senator Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., challenged Attorney General Eric Holder to say how a civilian trial could be the best idea, since Mohammed had previously sought to plead guilty before a military commission. South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham called the decision “a perversion of justice” by putting wartime enemies into the civilian criminal justice system. “We’re making history, and we’re making bad history,” Graham said. Republicans have also voiced strong beliefs in the “strict constructionists” principle where current law should be governed by the “intent” the founding fathers had. What are these people thinking? Our country was surely founded upon principles like “in all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed… (6th Amendment).

These public statements sadden me and dampen any hopes I might have had that common sense and Constitutional fairness might again rule the day. In the name of mob hysteria (that is premeditated public official’s use of fear to influence public opinion), Yusuf Islam, was denied entry to the US shortly after 9/11, and has been denied entry since. This seems a clear example of profiling because Yusef was guilty of no crime. He is a convert to Islam and has been critical of US foreign policy. But doesn’t the constitution speak of freedom of speech? Yusef Islam was born Steven Demetre Georgiou, son of a Greek-Cypriot. Most of us know Yusef as Cat Stevens and would like to have tea with the tillerman again. Doesn’t look like much chance.

Drink-fuelled pensioners rioted at Sunday night’s O2 concert by 70’s folk singer Yusuf I

Drink-fuelled pensioners rioted at Sunday night’s O2 concert by 70’s folk singer Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens. Furious fans felt cheated to realise that Yusuf was no longer a young man. “He looked just as old as us,” one disgusted fan claimed bitterly. “We didn’t pay to see some old guy sit and watch a musical.”

The trouble started when pensioners, many of whom have little concert experience, were allowed to go the bars during an interval during the show. They returned to their seats having downed several sherries in the short break and ready for trouble. Yusuf played right into their hands by sitting back and inviting ten actors on-stage to perform an extract from his new musical. Fans were outraged by this and appalled to realise that Yusuf had no answers to their problems and had actually nothing to say about the current economic recession.

“It’s completely unbelievable,” said Philomena, a grandmother of twelve. “We thought we were getting a a solution to all our problems tonight and instead he sings some crap songs that no one’s ever heard of and then makes us watch some poxy play about a hippy looking for the sun!”

Writing on his blog, Yusuf has reflected that, “One thing is clear: many of the fans didn’t realise that it was no longer 1972 – and some thought I was rubbish. That can easily be fixed with a free souvenir programme for the night and me personally informing the audience of what’s happened in the last 35 years.”

On a more sinister note, a senior Garda source noted that some of the elements responsible for last year’s medical card for pensioners riots were also present at this concert. This was, she remarked, “a worrying development and possible sign that disruptive elements were successfully infiltrating institutions such as Age Concern and bridge clubs across the country.”

The singer has, however, rejected suggestions that a fatwa be issued calling for the death by hanging of the unruly audience members. “Although, the Qur’an makes it clear – if someone defames the prophet, then he must die — it didn’t work with Salman Rushdie – we never got the bugger – and I’m not about to try that malarkey again. Besides, I’m not actually a prophet and it would further confuse fans who just getting used to my new cuddly image.”

I notice that all artists seem to be including canvas bags as part of their merch these days and I like it. At Marina and the Diamonds on Wednesday she was offering bags with the lyrics “I am not a robot” printed on them which I sadly did not buy. I still carry a bag I bought at Band of Horses ages ago all the time. They’re a cheaper and much more useful purchase than a t-shirt you’ll never wear. I know I never do anyway, mainly because I always buy ‘em too big or too small. The bag in question (rather apt, no?):

“You can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself” Ricky Nelson, ‘Th

“You can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself” Ricky Nelson, ‘The Garden Party’.

Last night I took my Dad – or rather he took me – to the O2 to see Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam. Billed as Cat’s (let’s call him that to ease confusion) first gig in Ireland the concert promised a trip down memory lane for the oldies in the crowd. Indeed, as we observed, the crowd was composed mainly of people in their 40s and older. Though it might be wrong to assume, there was definitely an air of expectation in the concert that this was a Greatest Hits tour, a chance for the paying Irish public to finally hear the songs that coloured their past, live.

Stevens, on stage © Ciara Norton

And from the outset it looked like this was what it would be. Cat began his set strolling onto the stage, guitar in hand. He was shortly joined by two more guitarists and together they entertained with the kind of folksy music Cat became famous for. There would be no dancing to this music but the crowd were happy, perhaps full of expectation that soon a Cat Stevens hit would make its voice known. After a few slow songs the stage opened to reveal keyboards, bass and drums and it was then that the show really got going. For about ten minutes, that is.

At this point Cat started talking about the “surprise” in store for the audience. I knew, as I had paid attention, that this meant a preview of Cat’s new musical Moonshadow. I presumed that as it had not been the opening act (a much better slot, no?) it would be little more than a few minutes of the second act, not close to the entirety.

Cat Stevens and Band, o2 Dublin, © Ciara Norton

The interval ended and the real fun began. Cat ambled on stage, sat on a box and with his guitar sang an unfamiliar song while two children played on stage. Their voices – the irritating sing-song kind – interrupted the song to talk about a land of no sun or too much sun or something like that and it was at this point that I began to grow nervous and the crowd started to shift their weight in the plastic seats.

This was as close to a full-blown musical as you could imagine in the middle of a concert. Plotlines developed, characters formed, children grew old and old people grew tired of the rebellious youth. It was hard to stomach, hard to watch a musical the majority of the crowd didn’t seem to know was coming when Cat Stevens was obviously wandering about backstage. Oh yes, he had left the stage after the first song and his cast took over the singing duties. This meant, in case my point is not clear, that the audience DID get to hear his hits, but these were the hits sang by cast members of a West End musical, their every syllable enunciated through grinning, gurning mouths.

Nobody in the audience paid to listen to an actor sing ‘Father and Son’, nobody wanted a female cast member to twist ‘Wild World’ into a lament for her lost son and nobody wanted to see ‘Matthew & Son’ turn into a dance routine. It was hard. I hate to see people on stage boo-ed, I understand that the cast members of Moonshadow were merely doing their job and I suppose they were doing it well, or as well as can be expected in the face of a hostile audience.

Then it was over. People were still walking out when Cat reappeared to tell us he’d be back in five minutes, that he hadn’t left us, that he hoped we hadn’t left him. So we stayed and hoped that a hit was somewhere in our future, a familiar song to heal the hurt of the unexpected musical. But it wasn’t coming. Cat introduced songs from recent albums, he thanked us for coming and spending “so much money”* and smiled his way through his second, shorter set. Even ‘Moonshadow’ was ruined by the addition of the lead from the musical returning on stage to falsetto his way through the classic. At this stage everyone was uneasy, Cat affirmed that he would not be playing some songs like ‘Hard Headed Woman’, presumably not in keeping with his current outlook on life. For his encore Cat began with a new song ‘All Kinds of Roses’ from Roadslinger. The crowd screamed blue murder and he replied “Now I know what Dylan felt like”. Not that this was comparable to Dylan’s electric moment, in any way.

I left during the second song of the encore, a reimagined version of ‘Lilywhite’. By then it was too late for me and I had to leave. Anyone know if he ended on a high note? EDIT: Apparently I missed Ronan Keating and Cat sing Father and Son together. That I can definitely live without.

To conclude, for I know I’ve rambled on long enough, I am usually in giving any performer the benefit of my doubt. I don’t like to boo (I didn’t last night) and I don’t like to hear others do so. I respect a performer’s right to play his recent songs, not concentrate on hits from 30 years ago. I do have issue with the promotion (POD and AEG in association with the Irish Times and 2fm were the promoters) of a concert that used Cat Steven’s hits to entice people into the O2. The preview of the musical was not billed as the major part of the show it was. I knew about it but I believe myself to be in the minority of people there who were aware it was part of the show. I respect Cat Stevens but I do not respect last night’s show or the promoters who allowed what happened to happen. As he might have learned last night “it’s hard to get by just upon a smile”.

*DISCLOSURE: my tickets were free, not that this prevents me from being angry on behalf on the thousands of others who paid €80 and upwards for the privilege.

EDIT: The Daily Telegraph’s reviewer had this to say about last night. I can’t say that I agree with calling the people in the crowd who registered their disapproval loudly “churlish and mean spirited”. Brian Boyd’s four star rating and my own differ widely, especially when it comes to Moonshadow.

Haha!

“Kathmandu and your strange bewildering time, I’ll soon be seeing you”- so wrote Cat Stevens- sorry, sorry- Yusuf Islam- us human rights lawyers must be PC you know…

Why the musical flourish to begin? Well in the first place if I hear this track again I will be bewildered- a pirate record shop near my hotel has it in it’s permanent playlist (thank goodness it is pirate; the thought that he might receive a royalty for this tripe is too much!)

Otherwise I only mention this to criticise- this song is a symptom of something which really annoys me- Kathmandu mythology. I’m not talking about genuine Nepali/Newari myths as to the founding of the city. What gets to me are the western hippys who swan about in turbans (I mean why?!) imagining that they are so chic. Don’t they realise that Nepalis find them bewildering? Don’t they know that they are in the wrong time- about 5 decades at least?

Well in my own way I’m delighted to be back, and far from bewildered, little has really changed to my eye and aside from my hotel room backing onto the nests of several hundred pigeons- very noisy sleepers- my dreams were haunted by sirens, cats, shouts and any other vaguely analogous sounds- I seem to have made a productive start.

Plus the Bandh (general strike) called by the Maoists has not materialised. Maybe everyone was just too bewildered by the time….

I gave myself an hour tonight. I had no place to be, no person to see, and school has already taken a backseat for the quarter. After coffee with a dear friend, I gave myself an hour. I headed south on hwy 1. It was around 18.45, and dark. I was able to forget where I was, and pretend that I was 375 mi north, on the same highway. Ignoring cruisers and streetlights, it actually felt like I was back. Turning onto the 133 sent a quiver down my spine. The same motions as the 152 headed to the foot of her greatness, I listened to a kitten’s “On The Road To Find Out.” Should I be driving a VW right now? I’m not, I’m driving a 1973 2002 BMW, with white leather interior and hub caps that match the gelb color of its body. I am conveniently wearing a scarf of fine craftsmanship, driving gloves to match. I hear the wind pass through the oak trees that line the rolling hills in the valley. Flashing lights ahead? There’s no metropolis in Salinas Valley. I fade back to reality, the 405 is in gridlock. I downshift, sigh, roll up my windows. I guess it’s time to switch to Autechre….
