I have been volunteering for the past few weeks at a program downtown called “Our World In Pictures,” where I have been mentoring young children from low-income families. At the program, we teach the children how to express themselves through photography. Today’s lesson was on portraits, and these are two of my favorites that I snapped while teaching.

Un hombre de cuarenta años ha matado con una catana a su vecino tras una discusión por el alto volumen de ruido de una fiesta en un piso del barrio valenciano de Nazaret, según han informado a EFE fuentes de la Jefatura Superior de Policía de Valencia.

La muerte del hombre se produjo sobre las dos de la madrugada en un piso situado en la calle Mayor de Nazaret.

La agresión se inició cuando un vecino llamó a la puerta de la víctima quejándose de los ruidos y del alto volumen de la música, ya que había organizado una fiesta.

Se produjo entonces un cruce de palabras y un forcejeó entre los dos hombres.

Fue entonces cuando el presunto agresor regresó a su vivienda situada en la misma finca, empuñó una catana, volvió a subir al piso y atacó al vecino, hiriéndole mortalmente en el corazón, según estas mismas fuentes.

Al producirse la lesión mortal, la mujer del hombre agredido salió a la calle para solicitar auxilio, y al llegar los efectivos policiales el herido ya había fallecido.

La policía detuvo al presunto homicida que no puso resistencia, y lo trasladó a la Jefatura Superior de Policía de Valencia, donde se encuentra retenido en espera de pasar a disposición judicial.

The french catamaran builder CATANA has just launched its new website and introduces the largest CATANA yet the CATANA 92.

I just finished writting the newsletter you just received. Can you believe it took me all day to write & design that letter?

My little fingers hurt… yes, panapen and aguacates are coming soon. I’m still to write those Ads but will as soon as I get some rest.  Quenepas season = lots of work.

Ziarul care se vrea ”pilonul mediatic” al statalității moldovenești, atât din punct de vedere al politicii editoriale, cât și prin prisma denumirii, a publicat un articol al cărui mesaj se lasă diluat de vorbe goale care își au acoperire numai în capul schizofrenicilor și trădătorilor (am încercat să mă exprim delicat).

Să vedeți culmea prostiei! Dorin Chirtoacă este acuzat de pro-românism. Nu mai spune, Catană! Oare e vreun păcat să fii pro-ceea ce ești? Cât de inconștient trebuie să fii pentru a ieși la atac cu asemenea ”argumente”? Dacă vreți să vă luați de primar, făceți-o prin prisma a ceea ce s-a întâmplat până acum, nu prin speculații și acuze mărunte cum că am avea un primar care este conștient de cine este, ce reprezintă și ce poate face. Normal că ar înfăptui Unirea în următoarea secundă, normal că își cultivă relații bune cu actualul stat român, că doar nu a fost și el zombat sau plătit să ducă de râpă RM. Alții au fost mumiile care și-au bătut joc de bucățica asta de pământ românesc, alții au fost cei care au furat ce și cât au putut până și după prăbușirea URSS. Dorin Chirtoacă nu a primit acea (ne)educație sovietică celebră prin inconștiența victimelor acesteia, iar experiența și trecutul său nu i-ar permite să-ți bată joc de propria muncă de dragul a câțiva sfanți. Pur și simplu nu ar avea de ce. E mult mai cu-minte să urmezi calea cinstită dacă ești sigur că ”ai cu ce”, or dacă ești prost și corupt, faci uz de metodele corespunzătoare – furtul, înșelăciunea, intrigile, manipularea populației și multe altele atât de ”la modă acum”. De ce ar avea Dorin Chirtoacă intenții dăunătoare față de populație dacă s-a sprijinit și se sprijină anume pe aceasta? Se știe că de la conducere nu a primit niciodată susținere (vezi cazul când nu a fost felicitat de Voronin pentru victoria de la Primărie, așa cum era cazul, conflictul referitor la sistarea finanțărilor, cazul Termocom, etc.). Este normal ca în astfel de condiții, o persoană responsabilă să se re-orienteze spre altceva, mai ales că nu duce lipsă de susținere din partea UE (inclusiv din partea statului român, desigur).

A fost acuzat că gestul de a oferi pământ basarabean președintelui român, adică a unui ”stat străin” a fost unul populist, ba chiar trădător. Ei bine, adevărul istoric și moralitatea nu cunoaște granițe, mai ales când acestea din urmă sunt impuse într-un mod artificial și înscenat.

Tot din ură bolnăvicioasă față de românism, primarul este acuzat că i-ar impune pe potențialii membri ai echipei sale să cunoască geografia și istoria.

România este țara tuturor românilor, chiar și a unor rătăciți precum Catană, or anume siguranța în ceea ce reprezinți înseamnă să ai conștiință, să gândești singur și să te orientezi în direcția potrivită. Căci după cum a menționat și o colegă de a mea, ar trebui mai întâi să ne regăsim și numai apoi să construim ceva cu adevărat solid și viabil în fața structurilor europene care ”ne bat la ușă”, dar în primul rând, în fața noastră…

Dos jóvenes amenazan a un conductor con una catana tras tener un amago de colisión entre sus vehículos.

Los hechos se produjeron en el mediodía del pasado sábado en la calle Eduardo Pondal, cuando un conductor recriminó a otro conductor de una furgoneta que se había saltado una rotonda, lo que estuvo a punto de causar un accidente. Uno de los conductores salió de su automóvil y se dirigió al otro con una catana entre sus mano.

Tras esto el conductor amenazado fue a denunciar lo ocurrido. La policía después de identificar al autor de las amenazas, procedió a la detención de este junto con otro compañero. Los detenidos fueron dos jóvenes de 21 y 26 años vecinos de la ciudad. Además resultó que el detenido ya era conocido de la policía, ya que justo el día anterior había sido detenida como consecuencia de una orden llegada desde un juzgado de Vigo. Este no era su único problema con la justicia ya que también tenía pendiente otra denuncia en un juzgado de Ourense.

Al final el detenido fue puesto en libertad con cargos.

Nahema’s stand at the boote dusseldorf 2008

I just came back from the Dusseldorf Boote yesterday where I spent 11 days with NAHEMA’s team and had a great time. This was the best boat show I attended in the last 12 years.

Special thanks to Nicolas Daher, NAHEMA’s the executive director for trusting me, Malouréne Corbeille, sales assitant for her energy and patience, and Sonja-Dana Roelen, our clever hostess for laughting at my fith degree French jokes.

NAHEMA was the only one mega-catamaran builder and displayed two models the NAHEMA 120 and PHENOMEN by Nahema an amazing 150 footer. The largest catamarans exhibited at the boat show was the CATANA 50.

Boat shows are the occasions to meet very interesting people you exchanged only mails with. Amongst many others I was very happy to meet with :

- Ewa Stachurska, SUNREEF’s PR manager. She is a very very energetic, efficient young lady. We talked for a few minutes about the show and how we worked. It is always interesting to exchange point of view with a profesionnal doing the same job. I hope next time we will have more time. Ewa was in Dusseldorf to see if it was worth it for SUNREEF to be there next year. Since she came at the beginning I had a hard time answering her questions but now I can. Yes Ewa it is worth it and for many reasons. First, you have more than 280 000 visitors coming for all around Europe and even farther. So in terms of brand image being there is a great thing, you get your brand noticed. Second, I noticed the visitors really loved watersports and are very curious. Third, when you come in Dusseldorf in January you don’t come for the weather, you come for the show. Fourth, all the people in the superyacht hall 7 I talked to told me this was their best show as far as potential buyers, press and networking. Fifth, this is a long show and tiring, however people have more time. You get to talk with partners, press who are not in a rush and conversation have a lot more value. Sixth, average purchasing power is endeed pretty high. Finally, the public in this show litteraly love multihulls.

- Olivier Racoupeau, a successfull naval architect based in La Rochelle, who designed many monohulls for Beneteau, catamarans for Fountaine Pajot, Yacht Industries (Yapluka), and has actually three mega-catamarans in built, a record. I have the chance to go to Olivier Racoupeau offices in a couple of weeks so I will let you know more about his mega catamarans concepts. Check Olivier’s amazing monohull project of the EVOE in collaboration with Isabelle Ramirez and Couedel Hugon Design.

- Merijn de Waard, Superyachtimes’ (click on the link you will see pictures from the show) website founder and editor, who took the great picture of our team. Merijn has done things the right way, creating a website about the industry easy to surf and with interesting and well written content. Keep up the good work and you will get good results.

- Philippe Touet, Incidence Sail maker, the best sails maker in the world for multihulls. I have known Philippe for ten years now and he is always a great guy with such an amazing knowledge about sail making and multihulls. He has designed and made the sails for Francis Joyon’s IDEC and so many other multihulls and mega-yachts. Philippe, who is an experienced sailor, a member of the Banque Populaire team since 2007, teamed up with Groupama from 1999 to 2007 and took part to the America’s Cup in 87-92-95. Check his records,amazing. He is a also a fun guy to be around for partying with his collegue and friend Huges Destremau another experienced sailor. If you need sails for your catamaran call Incidence.

Getting around Dusseldorf : a few advice if you plan to visit or exhibit at the show next year.

• Book a hotel close to the city center and Königs allee, this way you will not be far away from the altstadt where most of the fun goes on at night, from the harbour with its Frank Gehry architecture (one of my favorite architect) and trendy night life, from shopping, and most important from the subway line U78 which takes you in 20 minutes right inside the show.
• Book your restaurants ahead of times, most of the brewery are booked during the complete duration of the show. Some great tables : Café Madrid - real spanish Tapas, Okra - cheap and very good Ethipian food, Lido - quite expensive but an amazing restaurant made of glass and wood above the Rhine in the Franck Gehry district with a view on the water and modern buildings, Rosie modern german and international food with good music, Bandido-the best mexican restaurant I have ever been too, Sila – Thai a real treat book and ask to be in the backroom, seated on the ground if you don’t mind taking you shoes of and order a Mai Tai and a degustation menu, Schlüssel a real brewery with traditional alt beer and good food.

The light in the hotel was fantastic for a few portraits.

The view from the bride’s bedroom was stunning. I took two versions of this photo, one with the background in focus and one with her silhouette in focus. I like this one better.

This photo is an almost, I think. It’s too dark. I wanted to capture the hands and the feet in the black, but I think it needs a touch more light. Perhaps toning could help.

This was my first attempt to use flash. It took a bit to get used to.

This was a fun idea. We took the bride to a bar, and yelled for everyone to toast to her. I’m disappointed that this came out so dark, but I think toning might help.

These shots were my idea. When we came out after the wedding, I saw a firetruck and an ambulance right across the street, lights flashing. I grabbed Christina and we threw Nick and Casey between them.

And then, of course, there is the cake.

h 22.00. Cinque uomini in una stanza, pizza che tarda ad arrivare e stok. Un colpo interrompe le conversazioni, un colpo che ricorda vagamente quello di una staccionata divelta che viene usata per sfondare finestrini o vetri anteriori di quattordici macchine infila sotto casa.

Usciamo incuriositi in terrazza e scopriamo con orrore (e vago compiacimento) che avevamo individuato perfettamente quel suono. Un tizio che definirò “straniero” per non esser accusato di razzismo aveva effettivamente divelto la staccionata e stava berciando e spaccando macchine. Dalle finestre la gente grida, sbeffeggia lui ed il suo membro che compensa con quella buffa spranga d’ebano*, c’è chi tira uova e c’è chi chiama la polizia. Nel giro di pochi minuti il tizio sarà pancia sul cofano di un auto con due tizi che lo tengono fermo e poi due macchine della polizia e tutti a casa.

Quello che mi rasserena è che il tizio si sia mostrato sobrio e fosse senza alcuna giustificazione per il suo gesto. Insomma un creativo! Qui la notizia per dimostrare che qualcosa di vero in questa storia c’è (se non vi fosse bastata la foto scattata questa mattina nell’ auto di mia madre).

Contemporaneamente dall’altra parte di Bologna scontri tra bande con molotov e sequestro di katana…

Ma anche le vostre città hanno un degrado così creativo?

Sappiatemi dire!

ps La ballerina del post prima miete vittime e ci porta a dedurre che chi frequenta questo blog è un creativo che ruota in senso orario.

I found this video of the building of the largest CATANA up to date the CATANA 87- “ORION“. It show how the hulls are built using female moulds and state of the art technology. ORION belongs to the custom range of CATANA catamarans. This shipyard has been famous for building safe and seaworthy catamarans from 43 to 65 foot. One of their customer rounded the world with a 58 and asked for a larger easy to sail catamaran. Designed by Christophe Barreau the CATANA are fast and reliable blue water catamarans.
